I was wondering when 25 December became associated with the reputed birth of Jesus. The date was, of course, the traditional time to celebrate the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. The Roman festival of Saturnalia, and similar festivals from the eastern Mediterranean, were held at that time. In the late third century, the Emperor Aurelian added the cult of Sol Invictus to the Roman pantheon on 25 December.
The Christian adoption of the festival as a celebration of their founder’s birth seems to date to the early fourth century. The earliest Christian writers do not mention it. Some decades later, Saint Augustine explained why this was a fitting day to celebrate Christ’s nativity: “Hence it is that He was born on the day which is the shortest in our earthly reckoning and from which subsequent days begin to increase in length. He, therefore, who bent low and lifted us up chose the shortest day, yet the one whence light begins to increase.”

  Maybe it is someone who thinks “Christmas” is a cultural sectarian colonisation imperialism thing and offensive to all non-Christians?
  I said “Merry Christmas” to an acquaintance yesterday, who replied “I don’t do Merry Christmas, I only do Happy Holidays”.
  So Merry Christmas to all who wish to have one, and Happy Holidays to those who prefer that.

There are several attitudes towards Christmas,
Some of which we may disregard:
The social, the torpid, the patently commercial,
The rowdy (the pubs being open till midnight),
And the childish – which is not that of the child
For whom the candle is a star, and the gilded angel

Is not only a decoration, but an angel.

The child wonders at the Christmas Tree:
Let him continue in the spirit of wonder

(Each one with its peculiar and exciting smell),
The expectation of the goose or turkey

Merry Christmas all. My wife, son and I spent five hours today helping out at City Mission Wanganui’s annual Christmas Lunch, where 450 people got a great meal, gifts for the children, but most of all, company.

The BBQ is about to go on to cook dinner, once everyone rises from their afternoon nap. May the miracle of Christmas touch you all today, and may 2020 be a wonderful and prosperous year for you, in every way.
