Those of us who are Christian believe that people are created in the image of God and therefore deserve fair and equal treatment under the law.

However the labour government, along with the Greens, being far more enlightened than we mere Christians, is seeking to improve on that with a new public service bill. They promote the notion that there is a partnership between the Crown and Maori and according to Hobson’s choice promote the need for greater involvement of the Maori in the public sector. They appear to be creating a racial obligation on public sector employers and appears to put “those with a Maori ancestor” ahead of “best person for the job”.

They also have introduced the education and training bill which will give the school boards the obligation to make classroom instruction in Te Reo and to achieve equitable outcomes for Maori students.

These moves appear to place Maori people as a priority above people of other races. In the past we would have called this racist.

Isn’t it wonderful to see what our government is doing? They put Maori people above everyone else. If you are not a Maori person then you can expect to be disadvantaged by these pieces of legislation. Thinking they are enlightened this government is in fact returning us to the principles of tribalism based on race.

  Thanks. I had not caught up with that. Some of the provisions in the Education Bill are very alarming.
  
  Schools will be required to teach “local tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori, and te ao Māori”.
  
  Why is National not screaming about this? Or will it again be up to David Seymour to take a lone stand?

    Kids will revolt. Look at 1976 Soweto. Further most teachers have no clue about most of this, so it will get lip service and nothing else. Couple of posters on the wall with numbers and days of the week, and that’s it. Especially considering the large number of immigrant teaches flooding in to fill the gaps.

    The Bill was introduced last week and had its First Reading. It is a massive Bill, and it’s entirely possible that the first National MP’s saw of it was when it was tabled. There is plenty of time to go through it and identify areas of concern as it goes to select committee.

      We’ve just been to listen to Nikki Kaye speak, she is a very impressive woman – National have got a huge discussion document with great improvements for NZ education. National have a great team of MP’s and God willing they will be re-elected in 2020.

  It is wicked and insiduous.
  It is not just The Labour/Greens.
  National is gulty of it too.
  
  They campaigned on getting rid of the Maori seats and other racist laws.
  Then Key and co reneged on it.
  
  All New Zealand citizens should be treated the same.
  One Law for All.
  
  Only New Zealand citizens should be able to vote.
  Citizenship should trump everything.
  You don’t like it, become a citizen and commit to NZ.

  I am also concerned about Maori spirits being promoted.
  The Treaty payouts are looking more like a shakedown. Who are Maori now is very doubtful. Is there a single real Maori left? Many have no tribal affiliations or roots but sure can demand privilege and money. Who has benefited from the payments? Who is currently benefiting? I see this continuing if we let ourselves be fooled by a group which fosters trickery.
  
  What use use is an 1835 kumara planting lingo to to NZ? It’s mostly now free transliteration and poor grammar. Well past its use by date. The specialist reserved genealogies are only for a few.
  
  Nga Puhi is still waiting to proceed on their settlement as they want to be last and get the most while not being able to agree on which person can represent them.

        You cannot put the values and traditions of today onto history. Times have changed and only recently at that. Women did not take leadership roles in those days but Jesus’ close friend and someone he discussed things with was Mary Magdelene, He was doing his best within the constraints of the times.

    Nice try Nigel. Roman and Greek culture gave sod all legal rights to woman. The subsequent and pre-existing pagan cultures of Europe did similar. Slavery was accepted by all. And don’t try and tell us that Islam, viz a viz the “Andelusian dream” emancipated infidels, woman and gays. It wasn’t until the 12th and 13th centuries in Europe that all those groups got better treatment, save probably gays. All that arose with Christianity which freed them from their fixations on hadith and Ptolemy. All the “Enlightenment” gave us was dualism, Marxism, less legal rights for woman, the glorious Victorian and Hanover hypocrisies all alongside the wholesale slaughters of the French and Russian revolutions.

      Actually woman in pre-Norman Anglo-Saxon England we’re far more equitably treated than they were post the Conquest. Anglo-Saxon law, in keeping with its Scandinavian roots gave women inheritance rights for a start, and generalised equality under the law though there were still very different role expectations in the society.

    The Enlightenment originated in nations dominated by Christianity and not Islam, Confucianism, Buddhism or other belief systems. No matter what its faults and flaws, Christianity alone provided the fertile ground for Enlightenment values to take seed, grow and blossom. Many cultures and nations have existed or persisted for centuries if not millennia in the Indus Valley, Egypt, Sumeria, Persia, China etc. yet nothing like the Enlightenment occurred. And I say this as an atheist who is often sceptical of many Biblical and religious claims.

    Nigel – possibly a debating point? I’m not discounting the enlightenment contribution. I am just saying that Christianity was a key part of the idea of equality. That people are equal in the sight of God.
    We can see this clearly in the person of Jesus who broke many religious bonds of the time. For example his treatment of women was groundbreaking at the time and his outreach across ethnic barriers, particularly Jew and Samaritan.
    This enabled the church to proclaim Jesus across all barriers of race and class and sex. This led to the abolition of slavery in the fourth century and then again in the 19th century.
    
    But the key point is that everyone is equally valued in the sight of God.

    Yadayada – well that is quite a deep question? The Bible says that God is the creator and the author of the laws that govern the universe. He then gave us the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai. He then sent us the person of Jesus to show us what God is like and how we should live.
    
    Jesus said that the law and the Commandments can be summarised in two simple sentences –
    – love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength
    – and love your neighbour as yourself.
    
    Those laws are given by God to us. They are also expressions of God’s character. So God always acts justly for example because that is his character.
    
    God as shown to us in the Bible is therefore constrained by his character which is fair and just.
    
    By way of contrast the Muslim god Allah has no constraints and can do whatever he wills. That is one of the many differences between Christianity and Islam.

      Scoot, some people might find it difficult to believe your claim that ‘God always acts justly’ when they consider him:
      • ordering the death of the Amalekites and the guy who picked up sticks on the Sabbath
      •killing the guy who touched the Ark of the Covenant so it wouldn’t fall, and the guy who refused to impregnate his sister-in-law
      •killing all the men, women, and children in Sodom and Gomorrah
      And best not to mention the Flood…

        Mikey – not going to go through every example. But let’s just take the flood. The key verses in the Bible that explain why God sent the flood are these –
        Genesis 6:11-13
        (NIV 1984)
        11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.
        
        The destruction of the earth and the people on the earth was because they had all become corrupt. So God started again with the one righteous man – Noah and his family.
        
        The God who created us has the right to judge us. That’s the part you have to accept and get your head around.

  Crown’s relationships with Māori
  The role of the public service includes supporting the Crown in its relationships with Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi (te Tiriti o Waitangi).
  To that end, the Commissioner, public service chief executives, interdepartmental executive boards, and boards of interdepartmental ventures are responsible for—
  developing and maintaining the capability of the public service to engage with Māori and to understand Māori perspectives:
  in the employment area,—
  in the case of the Commissioner, recognising the matters listed in section 71(2)(d) in the development and implementation of the leadership strategy under section 59:
  in the case of chief executives and public service boards that employ staff, operate an employment policy that meets the requirements of section 71(2)(d).
  
  The referenced section amplifies the existing ‘good employer’ requirements by
  
  recognition of—
  the aims and aspirations of Māori; and
  the employment requirements of Māori; and
  the need for greater involvement of Māori in the public service

  I recently received an email from a gentleman high up in the ACT Party encouraging me to support ACT and giving as evidence of David Seymour’s skills and talents his ability in having steered his Death Bill through parliament. Sadly, the name David Seymour and the political party of which he is a member will forever be linked to their collective enthusiasm for euthanasia.

    I have a similar dilemma as I am essentially against the Kill Granny Bill. However, virtually every other party has signed up to it, and Act’s stance on Freedom of Speech, Climate Change and Guns probably balance out. However, I will wait until November next year to make a final judgement, but if the election was today, I’d be voting Act.

      So am I. If the New Conservatives are doing OK at election time, I’ll give them my party vote. Otherwise, I’ll hold my nose and vote ACT. National wil probably get my electorate vote, as they ahve a good candidate, and there has been a boundary change.

    I have no issue with your stand but you should consider that no party will ever agree with you 100%.
    
    I would ask that you look to the greater good that will result in removing the stain on our country called “ardern and the coalition”.
    
    Remember also that the legislation allows for a referendum and historically in NZ they haven’t gone too well with any government.

    David Seymour will win Epsom, so every party vote for ACT increases the chances of list MP’s to join him and the way that electoral arithmetic works, additional votes are more likely to help ACT go from 1 to 2, or 2 to 3 MP’s than National from 55 to 56.

      Think what you want but I would prefer a single party government from 2020 to avoid the cap in hand scenario we currently have.
      
      I realise you are enamoured with David Seymour currently but remember, he was so incensed about the firearms legislation he forgot to vote so maybe organisation isn’t his forte. Also bear in mind it is easy to sit on the sidelines and poke the borax from the opposition benches but governing has a little more effort required.

In its coverage today, the “NZ Herald” has – in the main – referred to the site of NZ’s volcano tragedy as WHITE ISLAND: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12293998 .

There are several references to Whaakaari/White Island in readers’ comments on the story (including one by PM Jacinda Ardern, of course) but its headline, photo caption and introduction have the good grace to accept that – to most of its NZ readers who seek to be informed by the newspaper – the geographic feature is and has been known as plain old White Island.

That’s the name by which the island is known by New Zealanders, and should not now be changed arbitrarily to meet expectations of do-gooders trying to push a Maori language agenda for this country.

Well done, “NZ Herald”.

    Myself and one of my employees travelled to New Plymouth last Friday, I commented on the beautiful view of Mt Egmont we might see from the aircraft window. My employee has been in NZ for around 15 years. He asked me what I called it? He mentioned, in 15 years he had not heard it called Mt Egmont only Mt Taranaki. I did not bother to avail him of the reason why, he guessed on his own and added an eye roll which seemed par for the course these days in that it is just accepted that is how things go…sadly.

Magic talk were playing something yesterday afternoon that was lamenting the lack of progress at the current client-change talk fest. It specifically called out the frustration at countries like Brazil and India who want more evidence that first world countries are doing their bit.

But all the while, farms in Zimbabwe are struggling with failed crops due to climate change. No mention at all of how the skilled farmers were all chased off their land by Mugabe.

  Zimbabwe now has over half its population on the brink of starvation and maybe a third of the population have left the country, so basically two thirds of the country is starving. The weather certainly has not helped, but the lack of commercial farming – and a screwed economy – are the biggest issues.
  
  Simultaneously, Zim has a health crisis (doctors on strike, lack of medicines…). Also a lack of fuel, stuffed infrastructure and 90% unemployment. Were those also caused by “climate change”?

A Magic Talk host absolutely condemns National’s proposal to fine cyclists for not using cycle lanes, but the main point of contention appears to be that cycle lanes are full of crap – smashed glass, staples, dead possums, many things that makes them quite dangerous.
The real question seems to be how valid are cycles lanes, and to what extent does a lack of maintenance render them useless.
How many new cycle paths will Grant Robertson announce next February to get his other roading project past the Greens?

    They’ve always been useless, roads are swept clean by car tyres, cycle ways are not – and they are usually impossible to sweep – hence you’d only ride one if you didn’t mind a tyre full of punctures, and car doors opened on you.

  Speaking as a former cyclist, the lanes are full of crap and need to be swept at least weekly. That’s what happens in these other countries that they talk about. But it is also true that the push to paint lines on roads with little actual analysis as to their use or safety means that many of them are not fit for purpose. Note also, most cyclists are also drivers – they get caught in the traffic jams caused by these poorly designed lanes too. It’s not competition between two factions but an example of ideology trumping common sense.
  
  They really want to boost cycling numbers? Remove the mandatory helmet laws and make it free choice like they do in Europe and most of the rest of the world. Participation rates dropped 30% when our laws came in. You won’t see that, of course, because again, ideology trumps the actual evidence.

Now, I maintain that going to White Island is generally safe, if you do an analysis of number of people killed versus visitors, it’s probably safer than the Tongariro Crossing, or many of the other adventure sports taking place in New Zealand. However, I think based on what I have seen of the Volcanic Tremor graph posted here https://watchers.news/2019/12/11/white-island-significantly-increased-volcanic-tremor-new-eruptions-likely-new-zealand/
GNS should have strongly advised that tours cease until the tremor reduced to back ground levels. They maintained it was too dangerous for rescue after the eruption when the tremor levels were the same as the previous week when it was deemed safe enough. You can’t have it both ways.

Yesterday, it actually came home to me just how pathetic and ineffective this Col goverment really is. Particularly as it applies to that most annoying and silly ban on Single-use Plastic Bags.
While poking around in my partners garage, I found he has already stored 37 pks x 500 ‘Lge Black Plastic Singlet-Bags’ that he’s obviously bought off Trademe. By my quick calculations, given we’d use say about 30 a week for rubbish and supermarket shopping, he has already accumulated enough for the next 12 years.

Just saying.

  I just buy the bin liner bags from the supermarket and take some in with me when I go in and shop. They have the same handles/size/shape as the old single use bags. I’ve even bought some while in the supermarket, broken open a pack and used it on the way out. Quite a reasonable price. Something like $2.50 for a roll of 30 (medium size)

NZ and UK can now get on with the FTA. It will be one of the first if not the first as Boris has already said. It has the potential to shift the dial away from too much reliance on dealing with the Chinese Communist Party to dealing with a country that we have ties to.

Forget 1973 when UK joined the then EEC. We should look forward to the fintech and other industries that we can do business with UK.

Lots of opportunities for our SMEs to do business.

A new courthouse to be built in Tauranga will do away with the “alienating and distressing environment” of traditional courthouses, says Justice Minister Andrew Little.

The Government has announced it’ll spend $100 million on the new design, which will “draw on Te Ao Māori values, and directly address victims’ safety needs in the court building”.

“It’s time to re-think the traditional courthouse design,” Little said.

  If he’s talking about the Court being less alienating to victims, he has a point. In many courts, there is no proper division between defendants and their supporters, victims and juries. To victims, that can be distressing. To jurors it can be intimidating. Courthouse design is one way to prevent injustice.

I wonder if Grant Robertson is still keen on the Auckland light rail.
I’d venture if you can’t get a few houses up on vacant land, what chance of a rail project on occupied land?

Sydney just got a light rail system.
It took nearly 60, yes almost sixty years from start to go.
The final price tag was $2.9 billion of which almost half was over-budget.
Along the way, construction company Acciona took the NSW State Government to court in a $1.5 billion compensation claim that ended with $576 million payout.
And more than 100 businesses and landlords have joined a class action for $400m compensation over the light rail project.

This light rail opened a day or two ago and there are reports that’s quicker to go by bus.

  This has been developed in partnership with a Maori Spectrum Working Group.
  
  “The short-term allocation of spectrum to Maori will act as a stepping-stone for Maori and the Crown to reach an enduring agreement which recognises Maori interests in radio spectrum,”Faafoi said.
  
  Further details of the short-term allocation will be released early next year.
  
  Faafoi said long-term rights to 3.5 GHz spectrum were still on track to begin in November 2022, and “details of this allocation will continue to be developed over the next two years”.

An interesting story was told the other day by a senior member of a government department who briefs Ardern. Excuse me for trying to not give enough detail for the trolls to work out who it is. But they were telling us that Ardern is a joke. No one their department likes to deal with her. That when you go to brief her she hugs you and keeps touching you, but they say nothing even though it is uncomfortable. They then said she waffles on and you really can’t make any sense of what she is saying, she has no idea on what she is talking about and they feel briefing her is a waste of their time. She is way out of her depth and doesn’t know what she is doing.

I believe he is wrong. While direct action can not be taken against the volcano or the people that took them there, ACC can certainly launch a prosecution against the operator if they were negligent in their duty of care.

I’m one of our resident legal eagles can put the correct terminology in there.
