Last night was really bad for Donald Trump. (Or, as I’m going to refer to him from now on, Orange Donny – Trump loves to give opponents nicknames, so it seems only fair he have one too).

Despite Orange Donny personally campaigning for him, Republican Gov. Matt Bevin has lost the Kentucky governors race (pending a possible recount) to Democrat Andy Beshear. This despite Kentucky being a deeply red state (Cook Partisan Index R+15, and Trump won it by 30% in 2016) and the advantage of incumbency. Even if the recount does result in a narrow victory for Bevin, the size of the swing against him would still make this a very bad sign for Orange Donny and Republicans.

They can’t blame voter apathy either; turnout was 40% higher than the last governors race. People were paying attention to this race, they cared enough to get out to vote. And they voted against Orange Donny’s anointed candidate.

I assume they’ll try to console themselves with the excuse that Bevin was an unpopular governor. Which is true, but trying to blame an upset this big entirely on that one factor seems pretty optimistic.

  Yesterday, was a pretty good day for the GOP in elections. Of course if you listen to the fake media it wasn’t. The GOP swept MS, they swept KY except for gov, they lost a couple state Senate and house seats in VA, Sanctuary City status was defeated in Tuscon, AZ.

  Bevin was a ‘Ryan’ Republican and was wanting to cut Education, Teachers Pensions and Taxes.
  Unpopular is an understatement. The Teachers mobilised against him big time.
  Before Trump campaigned for him he was 17 points behind and after Trump helped ended up only .3 behind.
  Beshear is also a ‘very’ moderate Dem. He used to be AG. The Republican who won the vacant AG slot won it by +15!

    Republicans can take some comfort in the five positions they won, sure. But Donny can’t. He tied his colors very firmly to Bevin’s campaign, endorsing him and directly asking people to vote for him.
    
    The Republicans who won didn’t get this Orange Donny seal of approval. Donny was the loser last night, big time.

      I think what distinguishes Trump and his nicknames, is that they are a) typically accurate; and b) very funny.

I would go further. Two or more years imprisonment is a bad example, we should know if they are found guilty of or plead guilty of a crime. Under this theory the labour youth camp rapist can become an mp because he got away with it. The teenager that raped a couple of girls and got a slap on the wrist because he was an future sports star could become an mp.

    In principle I’d want added to that list – whether they are going to take a leave of absence during their term, or anticipate not being able to complete the full term.
    
    Taking leave or planning on serving a part-term shouldn’t be disqualifying for a candidate. But voters absolutely have the right (or should have the right) to know whether they are going to get somebody in the role full-time and for the full term before they cast their vote. If a majority decide they’re happy with that, great.
    
    Not practical of course; once elected the MP will just claim the leave/retirement is the result of unexpected events or circumstances beyond their control (yeah, right) and there wouldn’t be much that could be done about it.

        Of course you should make allowances for unexpected illness etc, but things that are not acceptable are failing to disclose:
        1) Winning a position then resigning in a huff thus forcing a new election.
        2) When you’re pregnant or trying and are going to take time out for maternity leave/splitting responsibilities.
        3) When you have some serious condition (medical, mental etc) meaning you are likely to be unable to fulfill your duties.

Spare a thought for the people of Zimbabwe.

The comrade government have re-floated their currency leading to immediate triple-digit inflation. They are firing up the printing presses as soon as they can afford to buy paper and ink (seriously) which is going to increase inflation further.

Electricity is now only available for 5 or so hours per day.

The water supply system in Harare has failed and people are collecting drinking water from boreholes.

Unemployment is approx 90%.

A third of the population have fled. More fleeing now. Unfortunately the passport office has run out of paper and ink, so the passport processing is about 400,000 passports behind.

Public service doctors have been on strike for two months and many were fired in the last 24 hours leaving just a handful on duty. Not that it really matters since the hospitals lack medicines, electricity and running water. Doctors get paid approx $US50 per month – not even enough to pay bus fares.

Public service workers are also on strike for more pay. A teacher’s monthly pay will hardly fill a hand basket with groceries or half-fill a car’s petrol tank or buy two chickens.

Over half the people in Zimbabwe are starving as Zim only manages to produce about 20% of its needs this year. Sure floods and droughts have had a hand in this, but it is mostly due to incompetence and corruption.

Of Air Zimbabwe’s fleet of 6, only one plane is flying and the rest are grounded in extended “maintenance”.

But, hey, there’s a bright side: the government has just bought two new 777s and have also said Zimbabwe will be exporting diesel and electricity in a few years. And Emmerson Mnangagwa recently received the Pearl Of Africa award for outstanding leadership!

      Quite a lot of interesting You Tube doco’s about the white Farmers from Sth Africa going to work on Chinese owned farms in many places in Southern Africa. Many people would be surprised at the amount of land in Africa under Chinese government control. They would also be surprised at the number of Chinese citizens living in Africa. Like over a million.   Yes. Tax has to be paid on all imports. Of course you might fiddle the paperwork, but that’s illegal and can result in goods being confiscated, penalties etc.
  
  Depending on the state you might end up paying twice since Amazon charges state GST according to the state where your relative lives.

Winston’s court case. Media have recorded –
Boyle had consulted State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes, who in turn consulted Solicitor General Una Jagose, before Tolley and State Services Minister Paula Bennett were told.

But Bryce Edwards this morning says – It’s yet to be proven that the National politicians were in any way involved in the leak – even if it seems highly likely. But what is not in doubt is that the dirt on Mr Peters was passed on to his political opponents by public servants. Mr Peters is right to challenge this.

I look forward to the court case covering what advice Solicitor General Una Jagose gave, if any.
Did the Solicitor General agree it was correct to “pass on dirt”, as Bryce Edwards states?

I wonder what Edwards would have made of an item had one hypothetically said –

It has been confirmed that two Department Heads did officially know of super overpayments to Winston Peters, but did not pass that information on under the “no surprises” policy for fear of prejudicing post-Election coalition negotiations between Winston Peters and National, since they anticipated some journalists would consider National suspect of any possible leaks.

  Said by Tolley’s lawyer yesterday. One of the questions is what about ‘untrue facts’ that are embellishments of the allegedly true facts. If there had been no leak there would have been none of the defamatory comments made on message boards which have stretched the truth on this matter. No idea if Henry and Peters will see it that way but there’s plenty of evidence of it.

So, now senior officials in the immigration department are making policy on the hoof because the minister is asleep at the wheel. Ian Lees-Galloway and Phil Twyford appear to be engaged in a race to see who can be the most incompetent minister, which, in a party that includes the likes of Carmel Sepuloni and Kelvin Davis, is one hell of an accomplishment, although strangely enough, not one that the part time Prime Minister managed to squeeze in to her two and a bit minute propaganda video last week.

      What’s the fuss about arranged marriages? My Indian neighbours who had lived lived in NZ since they were children, sent their daughters back to family in India for holidays with extended family, and when they had finished their education went back to India to choose a husband who had already been selected as a suitable candidate. This person would come from the same caste, and the families would be known to each other. Romantic love didn’t enter the picture – good character, security and the ability to earn enough money to keep one’s family, and a good reputation were priorities. It was expected that love would follow, and indeed after 25 years, these NZ women are still happily married to their India-born husbands. The men are successful and law-abiding New Zealanders and they all value their Indian backgrounds.

        I have lived right next door to two Indian families with arranged marriages. All parties highly educated and a credit to New Zealand. One couple seemed happy. One definitely did not. Loud, bitter and regular arguments. I could hear every word even with the windows closed.

Deputy PM Winston Peters says the hard line taken by Dept of Immigration on Visa partnership rules was taken as a result of NZ First intervention.
PM Jacinda Ardern says Immigration took the decision off their own bat and not as a result of NZ First intervention.

What do we make of two proven inveterate liars contradicting each other? We could ask Peters for proof such as a letter or meeting details when the instruction was given, but we all know that would be a waste of time.
In the end Peters will bluster through this, Ardern will move on, the media will return to important things like Chris Luxon’s religion. Our faith in politicians having a skerrick of integrity will diminish a little more.

Winston and Shane Jones have got the reaction that they wanted from Jacinda and Labour over the Indian Immigration Visa problem, NZ First want to take the anti Immigration stance to the Election knowing it will improve there percentage of the vote and Jacinda can’t risk a Indian rejection in the vote at the next Election as it could result in the demise of about after one term.

On Tuesday Mike Hosking rabbited on about local body elections –
“If they can’t count the votes properly, why vote at all?”

He was especially referring to the Wellington Mayoralty election but I think he has his wires badly crossed. He seems to think that it is merely a counting error and if votes were more carefully counted there would not be a problem. He does not recognise the issue is not the counting itself but how voting papers which are incorrectly filled in, ambiguous etc are treated. If he had followed it more carefully he would have realised that – but hey! that would spoil a ‘good’ article. He would quickly be whistling a different tune if he was in the shoes of the returning officer and would realise that the issue is one of interpreting the ambiguous votes in the light of electoral law.

He also criticised winning candidates being drawn by lot in the event of a tie and considered it frivolous. He fails to realise that this is a requirement of electoral law and a returning officer is required to do this although the returning officer is left to choose the method which he or she would use in consultation with the tied candidates.

Cannot we have some real journalism, please.

  I think it is fair to speak of poor definitions of eligibility as a “counting problem” and does not invalidate what he is trying to say: why vote if they don’t know how to count the votes?
  
  When speaking, or writing, you can’t cover ever little detail and definition and broad language is often required to make the material. To do so makes the language very cumbersome.

    The Judge is likely to rule in the next few days whether a formal recount is to proceed. If the Judge upholds the Returning Officer’s decisions (ie interpretation of the law) then there is no ‘counting problem’.
    In particular the rules on what constitutes invalid votes are quite clear and Justin is effectively arguing against these rules. If the Judge upholds these rules , there is no mis-counting even with a very wide interpretation of what this means and hence the whole thrust of Mike’s article would fall flat on its face.
    Mike could have injected more precision into his article without making it unduly cumbersome. He is IMO either intellectually lazy or is relying on excessive licence to make the article hang together.

  If a toss of the coin is “frivolous”, then so, too, is any other method of breaking a tie (short of holding another, expensive, election with the candidates being those who were tied. If there were more than two tied candidates, single-vacancy STV might better be used).
  
  When the electoral system is FPP, I think electoral officers should make use of the random number service, at https://www.random.org/. This is an example of what they could do: First, a number could be derived by the True Random Number Generator (on the RHS of the screen), being a number between the ages of the (almost always) two tied candidates.
  
  The minimum number might be Jack 56 and the maximum number Jill 68. If the random number is 63, then Jill becomes ‘Heads’ and Jack ‘Tails’. If the random number is 62, simply repeat the process. (If the candidates are both the same age (say 53), then enter their age plus days, e.g., 53138 and 53279, instead.)
  
  Then, at Coin Flipper, here: https://www.random.org/coins/, the Australian $1 coin could be flipped 25 times. If ‘Heads’ comes up 14 times and ‘Tails’ 11 times, then Jill becomes Cr Jill, and Jack returns to his normal day job. In the context of FPP elections, what could be simpler, or fairer?
  
  Of course, this way of doing things would best be undertaken *after* it was agreed there would not be a recount, or, following a recount, the tied candidates were still tied.

  So far, all that has happened, is that there has been a preliminary count of the ordinary votes, as received by the electoral officer in Christchurch as at noon on polling day, 12 October; a second count (on 14 October?), that included the ordinary votes from council ballot boxes, received as at noon on polling day; and, finally, the official count (on 17 October?), that included special votes received by noon on polling day.
  
  Over those three perfectly normal counts, Foster’s majority went from 715, to 503, to 62. That was no doubt certainly alarming for Mr Foster, but all it does is simply reflect the fact that left-leaning voters scrambled to get their voting documents in on time; nothing more than that.

  Regarding the Lester recount application, things are looking up (see https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/117238538/ousted-wellington-mayor-justin-lesters-vote-recount-hopes-take-a-hit). It turns out most of the 193 votes pointing to Justin Lester would favour Andy Foster.
  
  Not that it matters, because, as I pointed out at General Debate last Friday morning, in my view, they cannot lawfully be included in any recount, in any event.
  
  Lester’s lawyer, Graeme Edgeler, is still pushing for a manual recount. “‘It was important a manual count took place to ensure all those votes were counted correctly by the computerised system’, he said.” As I pointed out at General Debate on Saturday morning (and gave my reasons why), this is utter nonsense. A manual recount will give no such assurance.

It may be an advantage, if left to us next year, in considering what further role Winston should play in New Zealand politics, to know –

• that Winston made not one, but several mistakes – wrong answers, as well as omissions of information in material he admits he did not fully read – on something as simple as an application form for superannuation, even with supervised assistance

• and that he can have such memory lapse as to who was with him at the time.

Later on Tuesday, Peters’ lawyer called Trotman as a witness. She said she did accompany Peters to the MSD office, and on arrival, “Winston went to the reception desk alone while I waited off to the side” …
Trotman said she left the meeting early to get the car ready for the pair to leave. She recalled a “long wait” while Peters met staff inside and had photos taken with them.

So James Shaw’s attacker got 9 months in prison. He would have got Home Detention if he had cooperated with the preparation of a probation officer’s report. However the judge seems to have left the way clear for a re-sentencing if he comes to his senses which he probably will after a few days in Rimutaka (John Burrett of kidnapping fame called the place ‘squalid’ – he spent 5 years there).
A surprising feature of the case was that he did not receive a ‘first strike’. That is because ‘injuring with intent to injure’ (max 5 years) is not a ‘strike’ crime.
Now, it seems strange that damaging someone’s face was not a ‘strike’ crime, whereas pinching a woman’s bottom (sexual assault) is a ‘strike’ crime.

We live in ironic times.

Amnesty International (NZ) are crying foul. It seems they are very upset that the government is allowing only 4 days for consideration submissions on the terrorism prisoner legislation being considered by parliament currently. Amongst other things they are claiming there needs to be proper consideration of the legislation to ensure “peoples’ rights” (we are talking captured terrorists here) are being protected.

Now you may all remember back in April a bill was rammed through Parliament in 7 days making once innocent people criminals and outlawing legal ownership of particular sports equipment. Mark 2 of this legislation is also before parliament at this time.

The irony comes at 2 levels, these being:
1. I didn’t hear Amnesty (or fir that matter any civil rights advocates) protesting that the ramming of the gun legislation through parliament in 7 days was denying people proper opportunity to consider, make submissions and be heard on the proposed bill; and
2. I do not recall Amnesty or any other civil liberties group advocating that was and is being done to previously law abiding citizens and their rights to engage in lawful pursuits is a breach of their human rights.

We do live in times of double standards and irony.

Personally, other than controlled public displays, I would like to see fireworks banned 🙁
Over the years i have either seen first hand, or read numerous reports of serious injury. Despite changes to the law in relation to the time and type of fireworks now available, this has done little to alleviate all the problems they can cause.
One of the girls i work with who lives in Epsom, was telling us last night close neighbors of theirs [Asians, who they have never actually met], appear to own a large Supermarket. This obviously gives them access to some sort of ‘commercial’ fireworks out of China. They always seem to have large noisy crackers available all year round, and often when your’e in bed late at night, the last thing you want or expect is to be woken up with a BANG!
She was saying that when she got back home yesterday morning from her shift, she found a huge Skyrocket embedded in the back lawn. She said the stick poking out would have been nearly a meter long, and the head of the actual rocket was of a similar size and shape to a standard nine-inch dildo. Now imagine if that had actually hit somebody?
Her husband has packaged it up and intends taking it into Customs and making a formal complaint, in the hope they might investigate further.

  Methane is measured in Parts per Billion. To get an idea if we took rice analogy, a grain is about 1mm wide, and we took a billion rice grains it would stretch 1000kms. So the contribution of Methane on that scale would be the first 1,800mm or about 2 metres. CO2 on that scale would be the first 400 metres or so. And this is a crisis?

Well so says the NZ Herald. But the New York Times front page today has a column about the phrase, and it doesn’t mention Chloe or her quip! Doesn’t mention NZ!

The reporter, one Farhad Manjoo, says this of the expression:

” …I’m not really O.K. with “ok boomer,” the latest rallying cry in the permanent war between the Young and the Old. As Taylor Lorenz reported in The Times last week, “ok boomer” is a meme started by teenagers to shred older people who express a broad range of antiquated ideas about the world. (The grammar snoot in me — and my copy editor — would prefer the meme rendered as “O.K., boomer,” with periods and a comma, but of course that’s not how teenagers write.)

Manjoo adds:

    Thanks. So “Subscriptions to International Organisations” has us shelling out $12m for “United Nations Subscription”, and a whopping $29m for “United Nations Peacekeeping Operations”. That figure is more than 50% of the whole appropriation.

      I have tried in past to quantify this. Hidden over multiple ministries and other government organisations, creative accounting (eg includes possible contingency liabilities for credits from memory).

There was a Health Select Committee meeting the other day where a terminal prostate cancer sufferer submitted a petition to mandate GP’s discussing the option of a PSA test for all NZ men over 40, which, if it had been done for him, would have possibly caught his cancer early enough to save his life.

The Ministry of Health sent three so called ‘experts’ to the meeting where the topic of discussion was prostate cancer.

All three were female, only one was a medical professional, and she was not a urologist!

Could you imagine that level of arrogance in a select committee meeting about breast cancer or cervical cancer?

All three so called ‘experts’ then proceeded to derail the discussion from the mandatory discussion of PSA testing to the surgical risks of prostate cancer surgery.

Oh for a few ‘stale pale males’ to provide some balance.

(Disclosure – I was diagnosed with grade 3 prostate cancer 5 years ago this month!)

  Mine was about 10 years ago. PSA trend -> biopsy -> surgery. PSA testing does throw a fair number of false positives and miss some as well. Lots of old fellas die with it rather than of it.
  
  Not a lot of 40’s men – tends to show up in older guys. Medical opinion is divided on the cost/benefit of population screening.

  Pretty good, after three years of androgen deprivation therapy and 7 weeks of radiation, went in to remission at the end of 2017, got some blood test results back today, all my numbers are still good. Back at work full time (never stopped actually) and being a full and active member of society, paying a shitload of tax and generally being an all round good egg!

The ad displaying three types of Streets ice creams — Paddle Pop, Magnum and Splice — was located on the outside wall of the Tui Crescent Foodmarket in Whangarei.

    About 5 years ago our then neighbor, [not a serial killer, lol], was sentenced to 18 months HD and handed down a huge fine for his part in a $67 mil fraud.
    Lucky for him, he was granted ‘Permanent Name Suppression’. At least that meant i could still drop his kids to Kings Prep every morning along with my boy. Otherwise, i doubt i could have afforded to be seen associating with them.
    
    So it does work, particularly when it’s only a white collar crime.

  Privacy is a relatively recent concept. It was practice in NZ for government to publish salaries and position of many state employees, such as police, railways etc.
  I have seen newspaper articles about intimate matrimonial relations eg husband denied divorce because wife wanted him to wear a condom, or when not enough sex, who “other party” was in adultery cases.
  Other news included who was on holiday, how they travelled etc.

Are we going from measles to mumps?

* The Medical Officer of Health has confirmed 12 cases of mumps, three being Waikato University students and nearly all probably exposed at the same location on Hood Street, Hamilton on Saturday 12 October.

“These are significant numbers,” says Dr Richard Hoskins. “11 of the cases got sick within one week of one-another, almost all were at the same location during the time they would have been exposed.

“If you get symptoms that might be measles or mumps – please don’t spread it, no one wants these serious diseases in the run up to Christmas.*

In light of zero-carbon act passed today, where do you rate various groups (political parties, generations, XR, etc) according to Mental Defectives Act 1911? Also, where do Labour / Greens think normal people are on scale?

MENTAL DEFECTIVES ACT 1911.
” Mentally defective person ” means a person who, owing to his mental condition, requires oversight, care, or control for his own good or in the public interest, and who according to the nature of his mental defect and to the degree of oversight, care, or control deemed to be necessary is included in one of the following classes :-
Class I-” Persons of unsound mind “-that is, persons who, owing to disorder of the mind, are incapable of managing themselves or their affairs
Class II-” Persons mentally infirm”-that is, persons who, through mental infirmity arising from age or the decay of their faculties, are incapable of managing themselves or their affairs:
Class III-” Idiots “-that is, persons so deficient in mind from birth or from an early age that they are unable to guard themselves against common physical dangers, and therefore require the oversight, care, or control required to be exercised in the case of young children:
Class IV-” Imbeciles”–that is, persons who though capable of guarding themselves against common physical dangers are incapable, or if of school-age will presumably when older be incapable, of earning their own living by reason of mental deficiency existing from birth or from an early age :
Class V-‘ Feeble-minded “-that is, persons who may be capable of earning a living under favourable circumstances, but are incapable from mental deficiency existing from birth or from an early age of competing on equal terms with their normal fellows, or of managing themselves and their affairs with ordinary prudence.

Not in Act, but “Sane” is option for you to use as well.

  Remember Bridges said there are 7 items he wants changed if he gets into government , the rye grass reducing emissions by 30% science based is huge , perhaps we should just wait and see how he sells this , because its not a matter of caving to the gweens , because Nats had already got many things dumped , if he sells this as business and farmer friendly he may well win on this , if not , the voters head to ACT and NC , so maybe it wont matter , I am worried working in agri but if they do the rye grass thing , im on board
