  Seems like Labour parties world wide are sharing policy and just changing the figures based on the country size.
  
  I don’t know but 2 billion EXTRA trees on a relatively small Island with a large population seems a bit of a push. I assume farming would have to be reduced to accomodate that goal, if it is even possible to plant 270,000 trees a day !

        Thankfully the Romans colonised us and put us on a good trajectory. This is something we should cherish forever.

        From memory, the Romans left a surprisingly small cultural legacy in Britain. They came, they saw, they conquered, they built a few things, and they buggered off. They didn’t “mix”, and their linguistic and genetic footprint, for example, was rather small. The Angles/Saxons and Normans (and perhaps even the Vikings) did far more to shape the trajectory of Britain, I think.

  Names of their Rulers (Kings, Emperors?)
  
  Their Capital city?
  
  Their Generals (since ‘Palestine’ has always been fought over?)
  
  Their language?
  
  IF (and ONLY if) you can do that, I might consider solidarity, but until you do, no chance.

The Part Time Prime Minister felt moved to make an apology for an air disaster forty years later that happened before she was born in a shameless attempt to garner another photo/news opportunity.

Perhaps reinstate some health targets, say immunisation rates for all that just might have a mitigation effect on Samoa’s current measles disaster.

There is something that could actually be within her gambit deserving of an apology for her policy.

      Tony, I disagree. History is littered with tragedy and failure but you don’t see other Governments apologising in this way. Adern was not even born when Erebus happened which is why the apology is so hollow.
      
      Imagine if all the post-war Governments in Europe were to apologise for what happened during World War II. There would be no room in the newspapers for any other stories.
      
      If she really wants to apologise, she could apolgise to the women that her Labour Party colleagues have been sexually assaulting.

      Seemed Morrie Davis then Air NZ’s CEO was a buddy of Rob Muldoon and Rob seemed more involved with matters than was wise. Cannot quite remember but it seemed the Mahon report was not tabled in Parliament at the time but was only tabled years later when Helen Clark was PM.
      Remember too when NAC (the domestic airline ran on some Aeroflot principles) was merged with air NZ when Air NZ hit a spot of bother. It has to be admitted that in various countries (eg United Kingdom: BEA + BOAC -> BA and Australia: TAA+Qantas -> Qantas ) pairs of domestic and international airlines were merged some decades ago.

      At the time neither the owners nor AirNZ accepted responsibility for the crash, preferring to put the blame on the pilot Jim Collins.
      They also attacked Justice Mahon’s report in the courts and won.
      If AirNZ had been found responsible the resultant legal claims may have sunk the airline.
      Mahon’s unfortunate phrase ‘litany of lies’, which may well have been correct, went beyond his terms of reference and saved their skin.
      Now forty years have passed and the government and the company have pretty much admitted the obvious – from a safe distance.

        This blurs the concept of incorporation, of companies as independent entities responsible for themselves. The Government was only a shareholder, as it still is.
        
        Jacinderella can apologise for inquiries, and reactions to their findings, but in her apology has she crossed the line of limited liability, the basis of scores of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of NZ companies?
        
        Air New Zealand was incorporated under its earlier name, Tasman Empire Airways, in April 1940. The Government was and is a shareholder.
        
        Here’s what the Companies Act says:
        
        Except where the constitution of a company provides that the liability of the shareholders of the company is unlimited, a shareholder is not liable for an obligation of the company by reason only of being a shareholder.

        There’s no doubt that Collins though bears some responsibility. Not withstanding the tacit acceptance of the low level flying by the Airline, to descend to a dangerous level without positively establishing the aircraft’s location in white-out conditions was an error. He did have the erroneous IGS that led him astray for which the Airline is clearly responsible for, but in the circumstances I believe it is not wrong to say that it was an error of judgement to descend as he did.

      Tony, an apology at some stage was probably appropriate. However yesterday’s apologies by Ardern and the Chairman were crass and played to the media and a public (who in many instances do not even know about Erebus and the aftermath).
      
      It was bad enough that Ardern was apologising for an event that occured before she was born, but the Chairman’s was appalling in its disrespect for the members of the Executive (and their families) of Air NZ. They were her predecessors. Painting them as unfeeling, unsympathetic corporates who did not care was reprehensible. She neither knew them nor knew what they went through in the aftermath.
      
      For my part, I have known the daughter of the late Morrie Davis, for nearly 40 years. What was said yesterday, was insulting to the memories/reputations of Morrie Davis, his fellow executives, and their respective families. Yesterday trampled their reputations for a gratuitous publicity stunt.

        hullkiwi, while you may know the daughter of Morrie Davis, this is irrelevant. The only reason that the Mahon report was overturned was that he used straightforward language. The Erebus disaster was caused PRIMARILY because the crew were led to believe they were in a different place to where they actually were by the change in the track put into the DC10’s system without telling the pilots.
        
        Air NZ DID cover up and the fact that Morrie Davis ordered every piece of paper he could find bought to him and destroyed was symptomatic of the way in which Air NZ acted. Their reputations are defined by how they acted.
        
        I feel far more for the victims and families of the 257 on the plane than I will ever feel for those Air NZ Executives who, to protect their many failings, lied and tried to blame the pilots.
        
        As an aside, I was at a dinner once with one of the face rescue members who recovered bodies and who had been given a titanium iceaxe by either McDonnel Douglas or the makers of the engines. The axes were freighted to Auckland by Air NZ from the States and Air NZ refused to release the axes until the guys paid for the freight. The guys never received one word of appreciation for the work they did from Air NZ.

        Clyde, your posted comment contains a number errors and a libelous slur that Morrie Davis order criminal destruction of documents (not even Mahon claimed that). Can you back up what you wrote or are you repeating hearsay?
        
        As for Air NZ & its behaviour, I cannot comment. However, the crash site and recovery of the site was not and never was the responsibility of Air NZ. It was under control of Civil Aviation, the insurance companies and the NZ Govt. Air NZ had no authority. So expecting thanks from Air NZ is somewhat misplaced.

        hullkiwi, the fact is that Davies did order the gathering and destruction of as much documentation that he could find. Was quoted in Paul Holmes book as “Holmes told the Weekend Herald he believed the cover-up – which involved Air NZ shredding boxes of “surplus” documents connected with the crash on the orders of chief executive Morrie Davis – was “as crooked as anything I can think of in our history”.
        
        The same thing was printed in Mahon’s own book. Both books been out there for some years now and no-one has bought a libel case. What a shame your personal connections with the Davie’s family seem to be removing your objectivity. It was a complex situation not helped at all by the Muldoon/Davies close connection and what Muldoon saw as a huge liability on Air NZ and the Government. I also note the burglaries of both pilot’s homes which were never solved – I wonder why that was?

  the problem in Samoa was that two nurses some time ago mixed up the vaccine, killing I think it was two children. That lead to the government suspending vaccines while investigating and then people being too scared to vaccinate their children.

        Chaos though brings up an important point, the death rate from the error (deaths per person affected) was probably higher than this current epidemic – problems like that do undermine public confidence.
        
        The local authorities would need to have a special program with exceptional openness around testing/confirmation of the vaccine procedure to overcome an understandable fear.

Jacinda Ardern said she did not know that former Manus Island detainee Behrouz Boochani was coming to New Zealand before his arrival, saying she was disappointed she was not given a “heads up” by her immigration minister.
Speaking in Wellington on Monday, Ardern said she would have “preferred” it if the minister, Iain Lees-Galloway, had told her in advance about Boochani’s arrival.

Many have said that Ardern should have stood Lees-Galloway down for not doing his job particularly well and it really seems it is due to Ardern’s inaction then, that Lees-Galloway remains in his job not doing it particularly well. QED.

The upside is that in any friction this matter may arouse with Australia, Ardern may claim her ignorance and her Minister’s incompetence as her defence.

    ILG cannot be as stupid or incompetent as Ardern tries to make us believe. Any one that incompetent would have been sacked a long time ago.
    With the Karel Sourbek decision he made the decision he was told to make and has taken all the negative media attention over it. Ardern has not sacked him as he did exactly what she told him to do, in fact, she owes him for taking all the flak.

We went and had a drink with my partners mum last night She was telling us one of the ‘old-boys’ shes friendly with at the village [a prominent National MP during the 70’s] was telling her, “There’s no doubt we will see Chris Luxton as National Party Leader and eventually Prime Minister, and word on the street is that Labor might also have a high profile businessman lined up for its top position. Someone by the name of Sam Stubbs is rumored to be considering a political future, maybe on the benches opposite to those that Chris occupies”

    Sam Stubbs won’t say whether Warehouse founder, Stephen Tindall, would soon stump up fresh capital for Simplicity as rumored last month.
    
    But Simplicity will no doubt need a cash injection to fund the group’s empire-expanding ambitions this year.
    
    “We’ve got an aggressive plan to move into other financial services markets now we have economies of scale in our core products,” Stubbs said.
    
    Initially funded by two interest-free loans from Stubbs during the 2016/17 fiscal year amounting to $900,000, the rapidly-growing Simplicity has been “cash-flow positive for the last five months”, he said.
    
    Nonetheless, Simplicity burned through about $430,000 in equity since launch in 2016 through to the end of March last year after generating about $1.4 million in fees during the two-year period.
    
    And with a $300,000 loan repayment to Stubbs due at the end of March some Tindall money might come in handy. Although the most recent Simplicity accounts indicate the loan deadline would likely be extended.
    
    “The 31 March 2018 financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis, based on confirmation received from Arthur James Kay [Sam] Stubbs that the $300k loan facility will be renewed on the same terms and conditions as the existing facility, and that in addition, he will provide additional financial support to the Company should it be unable to fulfil it’s [sic] liabilities as they fall due through until 31 July 2019 (at a minimum),” the Simplicity annual report says.

The Court of Appeal has rejected an appeal by Philip Neville Arps, the Christchurch tradie well known in the city for his racist views, against his 21-month prison sentence for distributing video of the mosques massacre.

The court said that the sentence was not manifestly excessive. It was imposed by Judge Stephen O’Driscoll, who also imposed the supervised sentence, which led to golf lessons, on a young Muslim who planned a massacre by knife and car in Christchurch.

  As ugly as it is, the difference between 21 months for distributing the (widely internationally displayed) video and pretty much every other crime that receives a 21month custodial sentence (typically only after many many previous light sentences have been tried on the (normally) recidivist crim) makes it manifestly excessive.

  Irving is wrong, and one reason is that Hitler was not a “details” person in general though he would interfere with very low level detail on military matters. Hitler ran Germany like a crime syndicate – he gave people spheres of influence that deliberately overlapped to a degree so that all his senior underlings would be obsessed with defending their “patch” and trying to encroach on other people’s “patches”. That way they were too busy to challenge him.
  
  So allocating railway space was something he left to the competing underlings who could assert dominance by obtaining more use of a scarce resource. Efficiency didn’t come into it.
  
  Only under the pressure of the late war lack of equipment did Hitler modify this stance and allow Speer to have an oversight and coordination role in order to make use of what by then had become survival threatening shortages of resources.
  
  So the economics of the genocide was never really a factor, it was, as many have pointed out, indeed economically foolish and undermined the war effort by diverting resources – but in following it that allowed Himmler and others to assert their personal predominance in the competition to be important after Hitler. So it was pursued with vigour regardless of the real impact.

Climate scientists are starting to push back against exaggerations by activists, journalists, and other scientists.

“While many species are threatened with extinction,” said Stanford’s Ken Caldeira, “climate change does not threaten human extinction… I would not like to see us motivating people to do the right thing by making them believe something that is false.”

I asked the Australian climate scientist Tom Wigley what he thought of the claim that climate change threatens civilization. “It really does bother me because it’s wrong,” he said. “All these young people have been misinformed. And partly it’s Greta Thunberg’s fault. Not deliberately. But she’s wrong.”

  In principle I have no objection to people having the opinion that climate change is driven by CO2 and is man-made. It is their right to have their own opinion. Diversity of opinion is important.
  
  What I don’t like are:
  – Wild exaggerations and fear-mongering
  – Attempts to hide/destroy raw data
  – Refusal to divulge methods use to “correct” the raw data
  – E-mails indicating intent to conspire against “non-believers”
  – The use of emotive terms such as “denier”
  – The quasi-religious and faith-based nature of the belief in AGW
  – A lack of discussion of the applications and usefulness of AGW as a tool to affect certain political objectives, for example, weath redistribution

Both New Zealand and Australia plan to play the overseas purchasing strategy again, although this time hopefully with more integrity. However, there is not much virtue signalling or salving of consciences by these actions. It cannot be the main game.

See, climate change campaigners, this is exactly why you simply aren’t credible.

Overseas purchasing, done properly (and of course it has to be done properly, no strategy will work if it isn’t) is actually a very effective way of making a meaningful contribution towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. If you really believed that we have to reduce such emissions to the greatest extent, and as quickly as, possible – which I do actually agree with – you wouldn’t be worrying about “virtue signalling” and “conscience salving”, just as you’d ditch your irrational, anti-science attitude to nuclear energy and genetic engineering. You’d just do it, for according to your own statements the need to tackle climate change is more important than any of that.

What’s happened instead, however, is that you’ve been quite happy to demand that others, including many far less fortunate than you, sacrifice ideals, behaviours and goods that are important to them, while not being willing to sacrifice anything that’s important to you.

How very fucking dare you.

While I am aware the pilot was given incorrect co-ordinates what I would like to know is why was he flying so low? I mean he knew there was a mountain in the vicinity, even though he couldn’t see it. Would it not have been prudent for him not to descend in altitude below the height of that mountain until he knew exactly where it was?

  Basic rule of Flying VFR – if he was flying IFS then relying on given coordinates is a partial excuse but the Pilot is in command and should always be cautious and flying higher than highest mountain will result in no crashing, no look at mountain for passengers but I bet they would have preferred no look to a very close and final look at Erebus.

  He was given the wrong flight path, he dbelieved he was somewhere else (over McMurdo Sound from memory). The white-out effect confirmed that to the crew, although a few seconds before impact they realised something was wrong.
  The Antarctic flights always flew ‘low’ – they were expected to provide a sightseeing experience.

      Rangitoto – the kind of “whiteout” that you’re thinking of is very different to the clear air “sector whiteout” that Flight 901 encountered on that fateful day. I don’t have the space to go into any detail about this weird ocular phenomenon which occurs only in polar latitudes but Mahon discusses it extensively in his report.
      
      As photos taken by the passengers within seconds of impact showed, Flight 901 was flying in clear air when it crashed. There was clear visibility for at least 20 miles.

  Michael – the Captain was flying that low because he was authorised to descend to that altitude by McMurdo air traffic control. Although there were stipulated minimum safe altitudes of 16,000 and 6,000 feet, Air NZ briefed its Antarctica pilots to descend to whatever altitude McMurdo authorised.
  
  The low altitudes were necessary so that sightseeing passengers could get a good look at the views they paid to see.

There is some sloppy journalism here – he was stated to be charged with indecent assault and sexual assault, but there is no such crime as ‘sexual assault’, it must have been something else and more serious than groping etc. Hence Labou Party membership would have been irrelevant.
  In the Labour Camp episode the accused’s lawyer had the charge downgraded to ordinary assault thus avoiding his client being read a ‘first strike’.
  I find this irksome but then any defence lawyer worth his salt needs to argue for the downgrade of any ‘strike’ charge to a ‘non-strike’ charge where possible.

      I should have been clearer here.
      In the very first ‘second strike’ murder case the accused faced LWOP. The ‘first strike’ was a very minor indecent assault, so minor the Judge cited that as one of the reasons to invoke ‘manifestly unjust’. This illustrated the importance of a defence lawyer negotiating a charge downgrade to avoid a ‘strike’ where possible.

The EU has banned inefficient vacuum cleaners to save the planet.

Yes folks: over 900W. Banned.

According to EU wonks, this law will save 20TWh per year. Really?

20TWh per year – that is the output of 8 filthy coal-burning power stations!

I hope Greta likes it dirty.

So let’s have a look:

The population of Europe is approx 750 million. Call that 250 million households.
If every household in Europe used a 1200W vacuum and now switches to a 900W vacuum, then they need to vacuum for 300 hours per year to make the numbers work. That’s 6 hours of vacuuming per week.

Now I have never been to Europe. I know Europeans like it clean, but 300 hours of vacuuming-per-year clean? I don’t think so!

Far more likely is the following:
1) Only 50% of households have high power vacs and the average house vac is probably around 1000W – so a 100W saving.
2) Average vacuum time per household is half an hour per week. 25 hours per year.

Crank the handle and that give 500GWh per year – EU numbers are inflated by a factor of 40.

People were slowly switching to more efficient models anyway. There was no need to legislate. But, hey, gotta keep bums on seats in Brussels!

All those hundreds of thousands of busy bodies traveling to Brussels and NY from across Europe and the world and needing second homes and accommodation etc etc has an obscene environmental impact.

  2200W? Remember to keep your mouth shut so that it doesn’t rip your fillings out.
  
  But you do make a good point: If you reduce the vacuum power you need to vacuum harder and longer. Any benefits of using a low power machine are lost by having people then vacuum for longer (or not doing as good a job): save 10% on vacuum power but then twice as long vacuuming.
  
  Again, this is the law of unintended consequences.
  
  Vacuum manufacturers don’t just go high power for fun – it makes the products more expensive and heavier. People want the lightest machine that works quickly and does a good job.
  
  It is telling that Dyson, who really made this into a science, found a sweet spot at about 1100W.
  
  Since most European houses are smaller (100sqm average) and carpet is not very common (much more hard flooring), I would think that my 25 hours vacuuming a year (half hour a week) is pretty generous.

Was excited at the prospect of watching “The Irishman” released on Netflix yesterday. Best lineup of “mafia” type characters that you could want to see in a movie about the teamsters, Jimmy Hoffa and the goings on at the time. De Niro, Pesci, Keitel, Pacino and even our own Anna Paquin to name a few.
What a complete let down. 2 out of 5 starts from me. I’m a huge fan of that style of movie. I have no idea what Netflix paid for the star studded lineup but it what ever it was it was way too much. Utter rubbish and not worth the very lengthy 3 hours. Very disappointing.

    Perhaps I was expecting too much. As a long time fan of that type of movie I was expecting something along the lines of Good Guys or Casino. I will say one thing, the 2 stars I gave it were for the possible but not probable, versions of events surrounding the Kennedy assassination and what actually happened to Hoffa. The politics of the unions was particularly interesting. That said, the lack of the remaining 3 stars I put directly down to the lack of action and mafia style bungled hit jobs. The standout characters IMHO were, Pesci and Patrick Gallo aka Tony Pro. De Niro’s character seemed weak and contrived. The fake blue eyes were off putting and unnecessary.

The real story is why people like this fall for the Chrisco scam. She would find the hamper contains around 50% ovalue of what she paid, mostly rubbish she would never buy.
If she had $60/week spare, ask the bank to automatically put that into a savings account to mature December.
I have more sympathy for the poor bugger who opens the hamper to find a collection of rubbish retailers couldn’t move off their shelves.

Ed Snack – my apologies – pressed report in error.

What I meant to reply was that: I recall the cockpit voice recorder revealing someone (presumably the Captain) saying something along the lines of “I don’t like the look of this, let’s get out of here; go ‘round power please”, followed within seconds by the obvious noise of the collision.
This points to flight crew doubt about the location of the aircraft at which point, had the Captain observed the fundamental “unless certain, never descend below Minimum Safe Altitude”, the aircraft would not have collided with rising ground!!!
MSA is sacrosanct to any seasoned pilot.

Building consents for stand-alone houses have made a comeback over the past year after falling slightly during the previous two years, Stats NZ said today.

Over 22,000 new stand-alone houses were consented to be built in the year ended October – up 5.4 percent, contributing to a total of nearly 37,000 new homes consented.

“While high-density homes such as flats and apartments are growing at a faster rate, traditional stand-alone houses still account for about 60 percent of all homes consented,” construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said.

Of course not.

The whole thing is a knee-jerk lot of rubbish.

One other point: I bet that 90% of New Zealanders haven’t a clue about the Crusades: when they occurred, who was involved and why they occurred.
