Subscribed to Disney+ last week. So far I’m very happy with it – it’s not quite as polished as Netflix in some ways (this could be in part it doesn’t have enough history yet to suggest shows for me), but that’s more than made up for by the vast amount of content.

But one thing I did notice was how much of that content was previously on Netflix. Which made be wonder how much of a shake-up this will be to the streaming market. There’s quite a few streaming services around now; too many IMO. I wonder how many (and which ones) will survive. If all the big studios pull their IP onto their own services, could Netflix produce enough original content to compete?

One factor will be how many services people are willing to subscribe to simultaneously. For myself I’ve decided on a policy of subscribing to two services at a time (currently that is Disney+ and Netflix), but review which services to have every couple of months.

  I also signed up to Disney+. The most annoying thing about the app is it battles to handle you not binge watching a series (i.e it’s hard to get back to the episode you were on). I am enjoying introducing my girls to the cartoons of my childhood (Gummi Bears, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Tailspin, Rescue Rangers).
  
  However as more of the big names are trying to get into streaming, we’re ending up with it almost being worse than cable TV in the US, or having multiple sky packages here.
  
  No one provider has all the content my family wants to watch, and some content is only available to people in the US (no way to watch it here) which is going lead people back to The Pirate Bay.
  
  Oh, and Netflix has removed Doctor Who, any idea who has the rights for it now?

  I read an article saying that some are going back to torrenting because there are too many services people need to subscribe to, to watch all the shows they want. Mandalorian is on Disney, Stranger Things is on Netflix, Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime, Cobra Kai is on YouTube Premium etc…

The democrats have to impeach Trump. Otherwise he will win the election in 2020. How do we know this?

Well the democrats rely on identity politics to win election. They want white women, they want Blacks, they want gays to vote for them based largely on identity politics.
But here’s the thing. The identity politics, the intersectionality is breaking down.

White women voted for Trump in 2016 over Hillary. Blacks are swinging towards Trump based on jobs and rising wages, and the popularity of Kanye West who is a vocal Trump supporter. If Kayne likes Trump then Trump becomes cool.

And gay candidate Pete Buttigieg who runs onto the stage followed by young men in little shorts, he has zero support in the black community. Here’s the thing that the mainstream media won’t tell you – Blacks don’t like gays. What an intersectionality dilemma?!

There are two polls out that has Trump support at 34 % among black voters. That is historic and cataclysmic for Democrat chances. If Trump gets anywhere close to 34% black support in the 2020 election then the democrats are done.

That’s why they need to impeach Trump for any reason. Otherwise he might win reelection. The democrats simply will not accept the will of the American people.

  Trump won’t be impeached. If a trial might reveal anything too damaging (e.g., from testimony of those currently protected by executive privilege), then it is more likely he will resign on some pretext (bone spurs, or suchlike). Otherwise, the Republican-majority Senate will acquit him.
  
  Trump’s re-election depends on the Democrats offering a viable alternative. It is still too early to tell what’s going to happen there. At this stage during the last election, Trump still looked like an unlikely GOP candidate.

      That is a possibility, I suppose – and if the Democrats have been so stupid as not to assess this risk, then they deserve it.
      
      Just one FYI – the Senate would be more of a “trial” than a “hearing”, so it would be somewhat constrained in its terms of reference to matters relating directly to the articles of impeachment (whatever they might be)

        I think the Republicans can argue that a President looking into historical corruption of a former VP is reasonable so any line of questioning aimed at proving a reasonable belief that the Bidens were potentially dodgy would be allowable. The fact that Biden is a potential political opponent of Trump’s is irrelevant if there was a legitimate reason to look into him. Once this line is opened they can go to town on the Bidens. I think this is what scares the Democrats.

        Except that it has been well documented that the president was not looking into historical corruption of a former VP, he was seeking an announcement by a foreign government of an investigation.
        Note, he was not seeking an investigation, just the announcement. Even more telling, he ignored the obvious steps of asking the FBI or DoJ to investigate.

      It seems unlikely that any witnesses would actually be called in the senate trial. All relevant testimony will have been given before the house committees. although in theory, the senate could call new evidence, it didn’t for the Clinton trial, and should not be necessary this time.
      Tactically, McConnell seem more likely to push for a very limited trial and a quick vote along party lines.

There is also a significant belief that the Republicans can do a lot of reputational damage to a number of Democrats by calling them to the stand. It is very unlikely they will pass this up.

        I remember seeing some of Morrison talking about Vindman (and Hill discussing Vindman too). It didn’t seem overly destructive? Perhaps you mean another part of Morrison’s testimony that I missed.
        
        What I can’t figure out is why the Republicans chose Morrison and Volker as their witnesses. If I remember correctly, you were saying that there were others who would have exonerated Trump completely?

  It is very likely that the Dems will control both the House and the Senate.

  A family member’s GP kept insisting that her chest complaint was asthma and/or allergies. She said she knew what those felt like and this was different. After a couple of months or so of this, she put her foot down and insisted on a chest x-ray. He begrudgingly complied. Lung cancer.

    A patient came in one night, to the small country hospital I was relieving at. She was 47, and very ill. She died the next day – PM showed lung cancer.
    The sad thing was that her daughter told me that she had had a cough and pneumonia off and on for about a year. The GP kept prescribing antibiotics, and various other meds, but did not order one chest X-ray. Not one.

  Yes, I know NZ is a small place and everybody knows everybody so the likelihood of random defendant knowing random judge is high, but NZ isn’t THAT small.
  
  What gobsmacks me though is that this case is supposed to be clearing the air. Everything involved should be squeaky clean and above board. Instead we’ve had:
  
  1) Labour apparently trying to subvert justice by treating a criminal matter as an in-house matter. This is, in itself, a criminal offense.
  2) Labour supplying booze to minors.
  3) Having friendly judges etc.
  4) Labour not learning from the exercise and rinse and repeat behaviour elsewhere in the organisation.

  According to your linked article the Judge has strong links to the Labour party. Surely the prosecution (police?) would raise this as an issue. If they do not this seems very suspect. Very dodgy indeed, as is the lack of media coverage of these Labour cases (Summer camp and sexual harrasment / rape case).

    It is not up to the prosecution to do a DNA check on the judiciary.
    
    The judges themselves should be recusing themselves if they want to keep their lofty moral high-ground.
    
    Like all conflict of interests, they need to be declared even if there is just the possibility of a perception of conflict of interest. Without that all confidence in judiciary slides.

  Reading the Stuff report it appears he was discharged without conviction and permanent name suppression – a kangaroo court with a corrupt judge with clear close connections to Labour who should have recused himself. Perhaps the prosecution will appeal the decision and sentence.   Strike Force Raptor is a very successful anti-gang initiative in New South Wales that National has studied and will adopt. It’s a bit like the “Broken Windows” policy used to clean up New York, where gang members committing even minor offences will be targeted.
  
  Personally, I think it’s a great idea. Gangs are a cancer on society, and National taking a tough line against them is in stark contrast to the government’s attitude.

I have been puzzling over the Herald article, which seems to lack a lot of basic information.

“Police yesterday defended Sunday afternoon’s raid, when they stormed a house in the suburb of Bellevue and shot dead the man holding two children, aged 4 and 6, hostage.”

So this guy is holding two children hostage. Where was the children’s mother? Was the guy the children’s father? The mother’s new boyfriend?
How would a guy just walk into a house where there were two young children (alone?). Did the mother flee the scene to get help (abandoning her children?).

It just doesn’t make any sense. The journalists should have attempted to clarrify the relationship (if any) between the guy and the children.

Later, there’s a photo of the grieving extended family of the shot man, making the usual statements one does when a truly violent and nasty male relative is involved:
– He was turning his life around
– He was a good boy
– etc. (You get the picture.)

      Read the Stuff article supplied above. All the indecent assault charges were dropped, and he pleaded guilty to two charges of assault simpliciter. For a young man with presumably no previous convictions, had he been charged with those two offences initially he would almost certainly have got diversion, so a discharge and name suppression would not be out of the ordinary at all. And the continued description on this site of him as a “perv” sexual offender etc. is a classic illustration of why his name would have been suppressed.

Anyone recall the flyby nighter PBJ83 the other day? PBJ83 resorted to calling Kiwibloggers who weren’t in support of giving prisoners the vote, Fascists.

I challenged them to acknowledge whether they supported the ‘progressive’ aims of P.A.P.A.

There was no response. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

It was rather revealing to check out a prominent Green Party member’s Twitter feed yesterday to see that they had been retweeting P.A.P.A’s Tweets.

So today we are remembering St Alypius the Stylite.
Alypius yearned to be a hermit, but his bishop would not give him permissiono do so. Alypius built a church, erected a pillar beside the church, and lived atop it for the majority of his adult life. After standing upright for fifty-three years, Alypius found his feet no longer able to support him, but instead of descending from his pillar lay down on his side and spent the remaining fourteen years of his life in that position. Alypius died in 640, at the claimed age of 118.
He is a patron saint of fertility in women – perhaps an association with standing on a large phallic symbol for so many years.

Carbon emissions trading threatens to turn New Zealand into a sea of radiata pine plantations. These will swallow up swathes of our export-earning pasture lands.

Perhaps we’ll have so much of the lowish-grade pine timber, that we’ll pay foreigners to take it away.

If you are one of the many who get hay fever from pine pollen (sometimes in cities near plantations you can see it yellow on puddles), you might be wise to consider healthier places.

    Yes. Wood doesn’t last forever. It can last a long time if you treat it and use it for building but eventually it will be discarded and burn or rot, releasing all that CO2 straight back into the atmosphere. Climate is a long term problem, and in the long term trees don’t reduce CO2 unless you grow them and then launch them into outer space.

How do you define a gang patch?

Leave it to broad and it’s laughable – the police logo could be classified as one.

Narrow it down and you open up a can of worms on who determines something is a gang?

  I don’t think it is hard to define at all. Anything which a reasonable, familiar/informed person
  (eg police) would interpret as being insignia that identifies the wearer as having an association with a gang. Could be patch, could be a coloured bandana, could be a specific brand of shoes or jacket, jewelery or even a particular brand or type of motorbike. Establish a process for confiscation that can be challenged in front of judge or other neutral arbiter as a balance.
  
  The power of the patch or other insignia is in its intimidatory impact – the implied threat of reprisal by a horde should the individual call for it. Take that tool away and you remove a lot of their power as a criminal organisation, and a lot of their ability to recruit.
  
  Harder to figure out what to do about gang tattoos – maybe incarcerate until removed?

Wonderfully refreshing to hear Lisa Owen interview Mark Mitchell on RNZ this evening re the National Party’s proposed law & order policy. Her fawning, eye-rolling, liberal, sarcastic condescension was palpable. She’s just so much more intelligent and intellectual than any of those red necks at the coal face…
Then again, I guess Lisa’s comfortable in the knowledge that she’s hardly going to encounter those icky lumpenproletariat types that the Police have to deal with, in her daily life.

On this episode, listeners chose their favorite songs, and host Kirsten Johnstone had a brief chat with them before playing each one. Duncan Allan of Wellington chose a poignant song about a man being released from prison on the Fourth of July. Sadly, and infuriatingly, Kirsten Johnstone entirely missed the humanity and beauty of the song, instead choosing to make a shallow and crass speculation about the moral standing of the prisoner, thereby staking out her moral superiority over these unfortunates.

Back in June, listeners were inflicted with a similar casual, patrician disdain for the untermenschen from another one of RNZ National’s pop music pontificators.* These people clearly think of themselves as “woke”, but in fact are little different from the most intolerant and judgmental right wing boors.
