So Trumpistas, what’s the latest weak excuse to try and dismiss the ever growing mountain of proof that Orange Donny’s blatantly abuse the power of the presidency for his own personal benefit?

Sondland is clearly a weasel who is now desperately trying to save his own skin. If his was the only testimony he wouldn’t be a particularly strong witness. But he’s not the only witness – his testimony (plus the emails and texts) is just the latest corroborating evidence. All completely consistent. And all very clearly showing that Trump’s Ukraine policy was focused not on what was best for the US, but what was best for Trump personally.

Seriously, at this point you’re only embarrassing yourselves. Just be honest and admit you don’t care if Donny abused the power of the presidency, provided he keeps delivering your precious conservative agenda.

      huh? Sondland is wealthy businessman, not a career diplomat. He is founder and former chairman of Provenance Hotels and co-founder of the merchant bank Aspen Capital. He donated heavily to Trump’s campaign (which in part led to his ambassadorship – nothing particularly unusual about that, btw).

    What a difference it was to hear Sondland speak. For months there has been talk of the way he brought himself in foreign affairs – even hints that he was corrupt.
    I’d gained the impression that he was a kind of fan boy of Trump with too much money. But when he spoke he was clear and unambiguous no ‘wiggle words.’ It was a relief, a straight talking American, not abusive, clear from the Republican side where others have been evasive and singing from the Trump song sheet that changes everyday. He showed that his leader if a f wit that got drained out of his own swamp. Republicans don’t need Trump, America doesn’t need Trump, nor does the world.

  Than – just crazy stuff from you. Let’s sum up. The aid was not in fact withheld. It was delayed till the diplomats concluded that Ukraine was serious about cleaning up corruption. Trump was trying to find out about corruption on the phone call. That’s why he talked about crowd strike which is a firm involved in the corruption in the 2016 election. Trump did mention the Bidens and want them investigated.
  The bidens do appear to be corrupt eg hunter Biden got millions of dollars from a Ukrainian energy company while his father was point man for Ukraine.
  No investigation of the Bidens actually occurred.
  The Ukrainians felt no pressure.
  The aid came even though no investigation of the Bidens actually happened.

    Why were the Bidens specifically mentioned, when Giuliani and his cronies were able to oust a career diplomat with impunity? The genuineness of Trumps concern about corruption can be judged by who he wanted investigated. Crowdstrike, by the way, is a myth.

      Fern glas – crowd strike is not a myth. It is the firm that investigated the DNC server that was supposed to be hacked. The server was supposed to be in Ukraine. Note that the DNC server to this day has still not been investigated by the FBI.
      
      But the facts regarding Ukraine are still the same. The aid was held up while senior government officials investigated corruption in the Ukraine. Pres Trump who is not a fan of foreign aid in general, waited until his officials had investigated that the aid would be used correctly and not in a corrupt manner.

    The aid was withheld until the whistleblower rumour went public, then it was released. This was just a few days before Zelensky was due to go on CNN and announce the requested investigations.
    
    Trump directly talked about Biden and the Dems on that call, and linked corruption investigations to those two things.
    
    There’s no illegality in Hunter Bidens role. Is it a bad look? Heck yes.
    
    No investigation occurred because this story blew up before it was announced, see above.
    
    The Ukrainians were directly pressured by Giuliani and co, as well as the President. Of course he would say otherwise publicly because for the moment Trump is still President and Ukraine needs that aid more than anything else.
    
    The crimes are : bribery, abuse of power, seeking foreign interference in a domestic election, endangering the national security.

      Red herring – there doesn’t have to be one for an impeachment (it’s not a criminal court). It can be for things such as misuse/abuse of power or using the position for personal gain (and for criminal activity, of course),
      To take an extreme case (and probably an unfair one from what I’ve read), the first person to be impeached, tried, and removed was a Federal Judge – his “crime” was being such a drunk that he couldn’t administer the law properly.
      Two of the articles of impeachment for President Andrew Johnson were
      – Making three speeches with intent to “attempt to bring into disgrace, ridicule, hatred, contempt and reproach, the Congress of the United States”.
      – Bringing disgrace and ridicule to the presidency by his aforementioned words and actions.
      
      Irrespective of what deeds Trump might done or not, impeachment articles don’t require “high crimes”.

        To answer your question the circumstances are important. In this case the circumstances are that one side has just not accepted the result of the 2016 election and are determined to drive the duly elected president of the United States out of office.
        
        So the Ukrainian investigations are done in bad faith. They are not there to investigate the truth. They are simply there to provide an excuse to impeach the president, something the Democrats have wanted to do since day one.
        
        So in my opinion it is all bad faith by the Democrats and therefore your question is moot. They don’t care about the truth of the “investigations”. They just want to get rid of Pres Trump. That’s my answer.

    There are other possibilities, m&m. For example, Guiliani has abused his position as Trump’s personal lawyer. He has, in effect, conducted his own personal “foreign policy” by conspiring to use aid to the Ukraine and a trip to the White House to pressure the Ukrainian government into announcing an investigation into the Bidens. He has done all this due to some misunderstanding or misplaced loyalty to the President.

    There is still no connection to military aid whatsoever and nothing explicitly implicating Trump.
    
    Vindman and Sondland have both expressed that the quid pro quo was a White House meeting in return for the investigations. A White House meeting… That’s not even close to impeachable, and Sondland says it was Guiliani’s doing anyway. Vindman says it was implied in the call, even though Trump had already invited Zelensky to the WH in a previous call. The best bet is that Vindman is retroactively applying Guiliani’s quid pro quo to the call.

    I’m interested in where the inflection point is in their beliefs. I was previously a Trump supporter and saw him more as a ethically flawed circus clown rather than a politician and that maybe he could do some good breaking the corporate grip on Washington. Objectively the cons substantially outweighed the cons and the benefit of the doubt I gave him dissipated once it became apparent that he was simply a con artist. I didn’t have anything emotionally invested in supporting him and didn’t see Trump as an extension of my ego which I suspect many do here so it was a relatively easy process. This is why Kiwiblog Trumpistas are not going to give up on him; because it would be to admit they were wrong and were taken in. They’ve become fanatics, unable to distinguish between right and wrong.

  This should show anyone of sound mind, including our blog host, that the dems are pursuing impeachment of Trump for any reason.

  The hearings go something like this – most witnesses never talked to Trump or actually heard the phone call in question and their testimony is 3rd or 4th hand. Many, like Yovanovitch, have an axe to grind, and their testimony is based on their opinions and feelings.

Another go round in the Kiwibuild fiasco – Housing NZ won’t buy some leftover homes as they don’t meet their design standards.

Mr Twyford was quite sure there would be massive Kiwibuild demand, based on the huge numbers who signed up for the newsletter. He also said several times that independent expert input on locations and other demand factors had been sought and received and was used in making decisions.

So there was panic to get homes built really really fast. Some experts eh, and some planning of the top flagship policy while 9 years in opposition.

Let us not forget there are about 10,000 additional Kiwibuild homes under construction or contracted. Apparently. Contracted numbers seem to have disappeared from revamped Kiwibuild reporting. Which reporting is very pretty but with almost no Kiwibuild information,

    The Housing New Zealand web site is still up, but with the message:” On 1 October, Housing New Zealand joined HLC and KiwiBuild to form Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities.”
    
    It then sends you to the kaingaora.gov.nz web site. There cannot be macrons in web site addresses.
    
    But the title that appears on the site you view is “Kainga Ora,” complete with macron, followed by a much smaller English subtitle, “Homes and communities”.
    
    All the information is in English. It’s only the title the Woken have changed. They know the information needs to be in English.
    
    Meanwhile, the Met Service has added a secondary, Maori name, “Te ratonga rangi”. A bigger problem is the re-jig of the site, with all the info a pilot might need to bring in an international jumbo jet, but far too much for the average quick look to see whether it’s going to rain today. There’s high resolution, and tutorials to help you use it.

Driving daily through the suburb of Tawa close to Wellington and under the auspices of the Wellington City Council and some of its Councillors and even boasts a Community Board.
Sadly the once proud suburb of Tawa when it was a Borough has lost its shine and looks very scruffy.
One would think that with Two Councillors Jill Day and Malcolm Sparrow and Six Members of the Community Board in “charge” things could and should reflect Tawa as it was before the Wellington City Council got its fingerprints all over it .
An obvious case in point . Duncan Street is a bloody disgrace especially in the Tawa College Area with huge uncut lawns berms and loads of unpicked up rubbish.
Makes one wonder what the mentioned groups get paid for maybe for doing nothing hope not, especially a just announced 11% wage increase makes it look even worse, perception is everything .
Message for the free loading elected officials get off your arses and do something useful do your job. We won’t hold our breath.

I noticed that numerous outlets are saying Sondland implicates Trump in their headline, but when I read further, it’s not there. The best I got was this:

“As I testified previously, Mr. Giuliani’s requests were a quid pro quo for arranging a White House visit for President Zelensky. Mr. Giuliani demanded that Ukraine make a public statement announcing investigations of the 2016 election/DNC server and Burisma. Mr. Giuliani was expressing the desires of the President of the United States, and we knew that these investigations were important to the President.”

But that is Guiliani’s quid pro quo, and has to do with a White House meeting, not releasing aid. We already know Trump wanted the investigations too.

So far, two people have said the quid pro quo was a White House meeting in return for the investigation. Still not a single connection to the aid.

A week ago Chippie released a modified version of his Schools reform package. Many on the right cheered, but I stayed silent because some of his original proposals did attempt to address some weaknesses in the current system. However, the solution offered was not a solution, but centralized control. The problem is that “one size fits all” style for the administration of schools doesn’t work for all schools.

Within the current regime urban schools close to major centers and large populations do well, while rural and isolated schools struggle.

First in terms of getting appropriately qualified and experienced people elected to the respective school boards. This is not helped when representatives of the Schools Trustees Assoc saying to constituent groups “you don’t need people from the professions elected on to your boards” (I kid you not, that is what we were told at a meeting in May). Hence the suggestion of centralized control. In itself not a solution. In electing a board it must be remembered the board must:
1. Hire the school principal when necessary;
2. Manage the principal;
3. Ensure governance of school finance, maintenance of assets, and policies.

Not tasks for the inexperienced or unqualified.

Rural schools often don’t have the talent pools for Board membership and hence do need support from the centre.

This lack of experienced Board membership then is shown up in the hiring of a principal for the school.
First rural schools often do not attract the best candidates because of isolation, small schools, low remuneration etc. Result is the employment of a person not best suited for the school – there have been examples including one where the principal was stealing from the school and the board was oblivious.

The other area where the system fails rural schools is the allocation of resources. Rural schools are often high decile (a decile is based on the socio economic status of the residents of an area, not the socio economic status of parents/guardians of the school’s pupils), and rural schools have smaller roles. Both factors serve to reduce the amounts rural schools receive when compared to urban schools.

To overcome the need for more money and teaching resource, I am aware of anecdotol examples of schools gaming the system. This is done by getting parents of pupils with any hint of dysfunction diagnosed by the medical fraternity with any number of different syndromes. With an appropriate diagnosis from a doctor, audiologist ophthalmologist, or physio-therapist the school can get the child labelled special needs.

If a diagnosis is made the child is often then prescribed with drugs or requires special and in some cases expensive equipment. With one current diagnosis there is significant scepticism as to whether the condition exists and whether the equipment/solution does anything for the child.

Because of this gaming of the system, it is not unknown for up to 10% of children on a school’s role to be diagnosed with special needs and indeed ivd heard of a number as high 20% or 1 in 5. All this because schools are inadequately resourced.

This not a Labour or National issue (because both are responsible for this situation), but it is an issue that National as a potential government would be well advised to get a proper understanding of and identify solutions for. Because regardless rural schools will remain a reality.

  Leaving aside your delusion that Donny would beat any of these candidates, I think you’re underestimating Buttigieg compared with the other potential Democrats.
  
  He recently topped a state poll in Iowa, and demographically Wisconsin is very similar to Iowa (with the addition of the very liberal cities of Madison and Milwaukee).
  
  The Iowa poll is also a good sign that Buttigieg’s homosexuality isn’t a major electoral problem. Iowa isn’t as ultra-conservative as some of the southern states, but it’s still pretty conservative. If he can win in Iowa he should be able to win any state that is realistically in play.

    Wisconsin is the Southland of the US. Madison might be a bit liberal because of UW in a relatively small population. But there’s nothing liberal about Green Bay, Manitowoc, Sturgeon Bay, Sheboygan, Eau Claire and Milwaukee for that matter. Buttigieg won’t resonate with the folk living in those places. He’s unlikely win Iowa for the same reason.

I’m fascinated by the election in 21 days time in the UK. The FPP nature of the contest means that only the marginal seats will make the difference either way. Turnout will be crucial as will weather on Dec 12th. They do not have advance voting like us and they do have very limited postal voting. In a marginal Labour held seat will traditional Labour voters vote for a member of a Marxist Communist Ant-Semetic government, they might vote Conservative(unlikely) or Brexit (possible) or choose not to vote at all. (very likely) I predict that Labour will lose a lot of seats.

  I am proud to say that I have been “banned” twice on stuff and have had way more that my fair share of “reasonable” posts deleted on this forum because my words offended some mod or other.
