More for the school-children who will demonstrate against climate in-action

We aim to plant one billion trees by 2028 – 150 million are already in the ground.
– Ardern, Opening address to United Nations Climate Action Summit

Ardern’s claim can cover only two years of Government.

In that time seedling nursery data suggest forestry planting to be 57,000 hectares (2018) and one assumes roughly the same for the other year.
So 114,000 hectares at 1004 seedlings a hectare gives 114.456 million seedlings or close 114.5 million trees.

Meanwhile, elsewhere forestry has harvested an estimated 47,900 hectares each of two years, removing 96.18 million trees. (47,900 hectares x 1004 trees per hectare x 2 years)

Leaving a net number of trees being about 18.32 million trees.

This does assume 2019 plantings to be the same as 2018, but, even if they were twice that number, it would come nowhere near Ardern’s total.

Someone is not telling the truth – well, not the whole truth

So the Winston-selected Government hasn’t really being building houses as they promised, they’re still deciding where, how and why Auckland needs an airport rail link, farmers were always going to get a 95% discount (Coalition Agreement) in any ETS regardless of what any figures suggest, and – here – they aren’t really planting trees as they promised.

As indicated above, these figures may not be wildly accurate, but anyone who can supply better and authenticate them would be most welcome to do so.
The question is very simple–
In the time Ardern claims the Government has planted 150 million trees, how many trees has commercial Forestry harvested?
Since of course only those trees left standing are absorbing CO2, rather than releasing it.

  There is an official MPI tracker at the below link. It includes the (relatively small) number directly funded by the government, which indicates the rest were private sector plantings. Like happening anyway. Doesn’t report ‘net’ plantings, funnily enough. This government doesn’t like ‘net’.

    The amount of carbon soaked up is pretty much proportional to the amount of mass increase. More than half the mass in a 30 year old tree is put on in the last 5 years.
    
    From 0 to about 10 years tree planting emits CO2 with all the transport, planting, disruption of top soil etc etc.

  The Labour tree planting plan has not gone well – I agree. But to be honest, cutting down a full grown tree does not mean that all the CO2 it’s absorbed and stored up gets released. Only if the tree is burned. If it’s turned into building material the CO2 will be retained in the wood.

      In a bank (that which isn’t invested in some way). Islamic banks differ in terms of how they arrange finances to sort of skirt prohibitions against usury. Christianity used to have similar rules against usury as well (as all here who had to study “The Merchant of Venice” at high school will remember).

We watched the ‘Harry and Meghan’ doco out of Africa last night.
Even though my partners mum still has a Commemrative Teaspoon from the ’53 Royal Tour, it’s fair to say none of us are big fans.
To watch Hazza & Megs being interviewed by some fawning prat from the BBC, with the pair of them continually lamenting “…how tough it is being part of the Royal Family”, all the while with a group of under-nourished black kids in the background smiling, singing, and bouncing around on one limb, was nothing short of cringe-making 🙁

As my partner said, “Phil the Greek would be spinning in his grave”

      If you are insinuating that I “loath” Megan Markle, MCos, you are wrong.
      I just have more admiration for the effort and commitment put in by HM Queen Elizabeth who in 2018 at age 92 completed a total of 283 official engagements.
      Princess Anne, aged 68, attended 447 engagements in the UK in 2018 and 71 overseas.
      Ms Markle is/was a Hollywood celebrity who was able to pick and choose what she attended – including “wandering round” at her leisure.
      Both she and Prince Harry knew full well the “hardships” Royal life entails. These have to be balanced along with all the “perks”.
      If they don’t want to do it, maybe they should retire from the rigours of public life.

      Until now they’ve been a bit tentative about (a) whether they have enough solid facts to carry a Senate vote, and (b) whether they have public support. I suspect this floor vote is a signal that they now feel confident of both those things.

        There is quite a range of arguably impeachable offences in play already, from obstruction of justice, sexual assault, profiting from his office, collusion with foreign powers, inciting violence against political opponents, breaking campaign financelaws, etc, etc.
        But you know all this.
        The clearest case, however, is one of the latest: his attempt to persuade a foreign government to investigate his political opponents.

  Not clear what the cancellation means at this stage, at least that’s IMHO. Certainly the recent revelations about the chicanery by the FBI/DOJ have been stunning and Flynn would appear to exonerated by prosecutorial misconduct. But the Judge might yet rule that all that aside, Flynn pleaded guilty in a plea deal and that has to go forward as a procedural matter.

mike, you may be right re Trump’s ‘unpopularity’ but I’d like to see the methodology used by the pollsters (who didn’t exactly, you will remember, cover themselves with glory in 2016!).

The US voting system doesn’t care much for the popular vote.

Every single person in big ‘Blue’ population areas like California and New York (with 84 Electoral College votes between them) could vote No to Trump in 2020 and Trump would still win comfortably simply by all the ‘little’ ‘Red’ states, as in 2016, bucking the way they are told to vote by the liberal press.

Much will be made of the fact that Trump was booed at the World Series game in Washington D.C. yesterday.

I’m only surprised that anyone thought anything else might have happened. In 2016, 90.86% of the popular vote went to Clinton/Kaine and only 4.09% to Trump/Pence.

Washington D.C., however, was ‘worth’ just 3 Electoral College votes.

Trump won 304 votes to 227.

This map is very illuminating – and shows exactly why Trump probably won’t even bother seriously campaigning in Liberalsland, the western and the north-eastern seaboards:

  You are correct – the constitution baked in a gerrymander in favour of smaller, rural states. Partly this was to appease the small states considering the union in 1787 and partly to protect the instrests of the largely patrician founders against too much democracy.
  So Trump’s widespread and historic unpopularity with the electorate at large will not necessarily result in his defeat in the race for electoral college votes. But even in the key swing states that he won in 2016 – Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, etc – Trump’s numbers don’t look good at this stage.

I have spoken to many people who have been obliged to sit through these courses and they almost to a person have been anti Maori at the end of it.   The actual truth is that Britain signed an agreement to colonise the country with the local Maori chiefs. They gave away sovereignty to the then Queen Victoria. In return they got the use of their land unless or until they sold it to the crown. They also got all the rights and protections of British subjects.

Maybe it’s my European heritage, but I don’t understand the outrage here. Two 15 year old boys had a few shags. They were not forced. Sure the tart used some emotional blackmail at various stages. But you show me many 15 year old boys that are not dying to get a bit of leg over. There are far worse crimes than a 30yr old shagging a willing 15 yr old.

    Agree Mikenmild.
    I have a 16 year old Son and he would be Totally messed up by this kind of thing.
    While they have deep voices, look like young men etc, they were just little boys a few years back. She deserves contempt and time inside

i’d be pissed off as hell. But I don’t think I’d be involving the cops. A bit younger, definitely and if there was no consent, definitely. However, its a fact that young guys have a far more relaxed attitude to shagging than young girls, and a huge number of teenagers are sexually active from about year 9… I am not saying that what this woman did is right, but I can’t see it as a criminal act.
