    But is such moral superiority and entitlement a good thing to have? I think not.

  I was in England in 1995. In the build up to the 1995 semi final, you would have had to have been living on another planet if you believed that the ABs stood any chance against England in 1995. None of the hype was ever with any foundation.
  
  Reading the English press this week, the hype has been no different. However, I mindful of what Stephen Jones (of all people) wrote about English efforts after the first week of this year’s tournament, “if England continue to play the same way through the tournament (and they have, except against Aust), they will not stand a chance against the All Blacks.

      I like Cornwell…. kind of. I used to read his books but he seems kind of anti-religious and would always take a swipe in every book. Having a priest or other religious do something bad. I mean, one of his books told the story about Alfred the Great (who was very great), but in the book all Alfred’s accomplishments are due to a rouge viking winning all his battles. Cornwell seems to want to have it both ways – tell history, but warp it i his own way to change the heroes…

        You do understand the concept of “artistic licence” and the difference between a non-fiction history and a novel don’t you?
        
        One of the things I like most about Cornwell is the way he puts a historical note at the end of his books and points out where he has made changes, or in the case of the Saxon books, filled in historical unknowns for the purposes of making a good story.
        
        Sharpe is forever taking the credit for real soldiers and manages to turn up at every major battle in the Pensisular, despite the 95th not actually being there – all of which Cornwell explains for the reader.

        Cornwell’s hero in that series is actually a Saxon, but raised by Danes and an enthusiastic adherent of the Old Norse religion – not a fan of the Christians’ “nailed god”.

        Cornwell digs in in his work, and takes the mick out of all sides of the story: pagan vikings and christian and puritans and sacarens and jewish. His take on the “nailed god” is a mix of insult and respect. It also brings out that christ was indeed tortured and nailed to a piece of wood, like a criminal. The saturation of our culture with Christian iconography has taken the blood out of the cross. One of his newest books [Fools and Mortal] he writes of Shakespeare & his brother, and brings to light Will’s hidden Catholicness in a world of persecuting puritans. The puritans were definitely the bad guys, and the Catholics the good guys. But everyone gets the piss taken out to a satisfying level of entertainment.

The indictment, returned by a grand jury on January 16, details Huawei’s efforts to steal trade secrets from Bellevue, Washington based T-Mobile USA and then obstruct justice when T-Mobile threatened to sue Huawei in U.S. District Court in Seattle.

    I like Ryan Bridges. He can be good fun while being serious. I’m surprised at the number of people who think gayness is something to be remarked upon. And I have no problem with ‘man-buns’. apart from the fact that some people don’t suit them – like some middle-aged women who continue to wear their hair long as if they were still a teenager – perhaps they don’t see that it gives them a witch-on-a-broomstick look –
    I can get along with the afternoon host (whose name has escaped me – senior moment) too especially when he is having fun baiting people.

Many critics, including the owner of this blog, were happy that at last we have got Donald Trump! Amb Taylor was clear that there was a quid pro quo! Orange man bad! He’s definitely going to be impeached!

But here is a rule of thumb on all of these anti-Trump charges. Take it as your default position that they are all bull shit. We were told for two years that Trump is a Russian lapdog and a traitor to his country. It was all bull shit. Now we are told that Trump blackmailed the Ukrainians to get dirt on Joe Biden.   What amuses me is that he is being accused of using leverage to force a probably corrupt government to reveal details of corruption by a senior member of the US government.
  
  Now leaving all the silliness aside that it involves Trump so must be bad, why can’t a sitting government pressure another government to assist them to pursue corruption within their own country?
  
  Could there be any parallel with a sitting labour mp in one country digging up “secrets” about a senior politician in another country with a view to affecting that country’s parliament?

They take to heart policies that have little immediate bearing on NZ (e.g., Trump will get Mexico to pay for a wall between the two countries – actually I can’t even remember where that has got to).       The problem comes partly from the hospital being based since the beginning on a corner of Christchurch’s central park.
      
      The piece of land beside it that held the big Nurses “home” (hostel), was also carved out of the park. This went to Ngai Tahu under the tribe’s sweetheart settlement giving it first option to buy South Island state assets being sold.
      
      If the hospital moves, no doubt the site will end up as the site of a huge hotel, fully or partly owned by the tribe, but leased to an international chain.

        The cost of doing so would be huge, more than any Government would front up with.
        On top of that, where would it move to ?

        The only answer for parking has to be over the road in Hagley Park, but we know the fight that would be.

We all pay insurance levies to the Fire Service. Their income from levies is huge. Along with lots of UK import Fire Service management.
Two out of three appliances available, maybe, but one out of three is just incompetent.
Private enterprise would not allow that to happen.
Imagine the crane operators on these high rise jobs saying, “sorry only one of the three cranes is going”.
Don’t think so.

    Adding to this if you read the article the second heavy appliance was undergoing maintenance on the day and arrived there in the afternoon after being fixed. So including the one from Hamilton they had three. But it does appear even the fleet in Wellington are rundown.

There was an issue a few years ago that big firms were getting their insurance overseas and avoiding the Fire Service levy. Don’t know if this is still the case but would certainly hope that Fletchers and Sky City had been contributing to the Fire services that they took advantage of.

The Three Waters Review is a cross-agency initiative led by the Minister of Local Government. Other involved agencies and portfolios include: Health, Environment, Finance, Business Innovation and Employment, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Primary Industries, Climate Change, Infrastructure, Civil Defence and Emergency Management, Housing and Urban Development, Transport, Conservation, and Rural Communities.

That looks like a who’s-who of Wellington public servants. And, collectively, their big idea was a new standalone crown entity? Oh well, at least they didn’t conclude that another working group was required.

An Establishment Unit is being created within the Department of Internal Affairs, with support from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry for the Environment, to design and operationalise the new regulator.

  I saw this coming a while back. It’s probably fair enough that town/city dwellers can expect potable water. After all they pay through the nose for it.
  
  But this little power grab is going to include all water…..reticulated & well water, however small the scheme, be it rural or urban.
  
  The costs to many already impoverished rural communities will be horrendous.

  First case was sentencing so its normal for name supression to be lifted at this point.
  
  The other two have just been arrested and charged and given there is a teenager involved there will be name supression for that.
  
  Take a deep breath and drop the soft-racism.

    I note there is also a charge of rape included with the teenager raping a female over 16. Name suppression if given would also be possible to protect the victim of that crime.
