  Agreed OS, the Nobel Prize should be for PEACE! not for people who grab the headlines (besides, what ‘peace’ has Greta accomplished?) The Nobel Committee have changed, for the better, after the big mistake of awarding it to Obama for no other reason than being black and talking a good game when becoming POTUS, where he then increased drone strikes/stopped no war/entered US into more wars.
  I haven’t heard of this new winner, but isn’t that the point….not always the headlines grabbers but ones who strive for, and achieve, peace anywhere in the world.

        Good one, RP. After I had heard Greta Thunberg’s “How dare you!” signature line three times, I felt that she had been schooled by an adult who knew very little about the psychological subtleties of changing anyone’s views and gaining their agreement or support, probably on any subject.
        
        Since Thunberg delivered ‘her’ speech to the world (a speech which I do not believe, personally, that she wrote alone) I’ve reflected on how many other people in her so-called worldwide audience may have found her “How dare you!” challenge as distasteful and as alienating as I did. I have no idea, but I suspect that I was not in a tiny minority.

      You should also treat with a very large grain of salt that the fact that someone has been nominated means anything at all.
      Any current member of the New Zealand Parliament is eligible to nominate someone. If you think that some unknown Labour Backbencher would fail to carry out Ms Ardern’s wish that she should be nominated I have a large bridge I am sure you would like to buy.

        Yes, very brief occupation and ended when British forces threw the Italians out early in WW2. The invasion and conquest was the final straw that destroyed the League of Nations.
        
        Interestingly enough there is one enduring and positive legacy for the Italian occupation – the most important water source still for the capital Addis Ababa is a dam constructed (and paid for) by the Italians. Before that there was a far less reliable and less secure set of small water sources and there was a chronic shortage of water. A lot of Ethiopia is dry even though the Blue Nile has its source in the North East sector of the country.

So the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 has now been awarded. There doesn’t appear to be a mention in international media of PM Ardern as being a possible winner, despite a local build-up of hopes and expectations in NZ media and on blog sites.

Most people are unaware that there were 301 nominations for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize (223 individuals and 78 organizations). So our PM’s nomination (if indeed there was one; there is confidentiality imposed for 50 years on the names of nominees ) was a long shot at best.

  But… January 31st. It’s all nonsense. Greta supposedly being nominated in March was at least a month after the deadline. Direct copy/paste from the Nobel website: “Nomination deadline is 31 January at 12 midnight CET.”
  
  Cindy and little Greta might be considered for next year’s prize (other considerations aside), if nominated after the deadline. And if anybody still cares about them by then.

      He does not have a point really. The Sharp was commenting on the statistical mechanisms for handling the predictions, (which he is better qualified on than the climate scientists, as that is a core part of his discipline, while statistics is a tool in studying climate rather than the subject of it ), and the way the results are presented.

    Yes, marketing science. He even makes that point in his (very well thought out and well articulated) article. You should actually read it.
    
    The principle behind cross disciplinary evaluation and commenting is a well established one in science. The article even addresses that (again, suggest you read it).
    
    He highlights problems surrounding predictive statistics (something that is an area of expertise he does have), and his concerns around the failure of climate scientists to use the best practice tools and techniques that are used across pretty much every other scientific discipline.
    
    The other thing you missed is that he was in no way arguing against the base science, only the way the data is handled to then make predictions .
    
    By the way. How well qualified is Greta to comment?

  Yes. I just fail to be convinced that 410 ppm of Co2 in the atmosphere the gas that allows all that vegetation such as crops and trees that allow ecosystem to prosper is going to result in uncontrollable heating that will turn the Earth into another Venus or maybe another Mars as has been predicted. Dumpling Republic. Rock Enrol targets uni students to vote with free dumpling meals stuffing both the students and the ballot box with voters from their favourite demographic. Treating? If not close to it.

Furthermore, putting ballot boxes at only those workplaces who have requested them is biased. So uni’s, councils and unions will have all organised them. Especially when the voting papers come to your house, do you bring your voting papers in from home? Surely it’s easier to fill them out at home where you received them.

For example, Waipareira Trust has been doing heavy facebook advertising of Tamihere. And then they had a Whanau Vote Day and one image showed an open table with a dozen-ish people, no separation, and looking at each others voting papers. As well as what appeared to be a sign in sheet. How does that work when your boss is running for office and there’s a sign in sheet to see who has voted?

It’s not democratic. We would be better off having a normal voting office at the local schools if this is the new way things are being done. Where everyone has an equal opportunity to vote and the campaigns to vote are to the public in general not free food for those voters in certain demographics.,

  We need help from our accountancy professional posters here. The Treasury reports are full of bloody graphs and other bumph. For me, the easiest place to start was to go to the audited accounts (second link below) and work my way through as through a company’s accounts – income statement, cash flows and balance sheet (statement of financial position).

Today listening the 9-Noon programme on dogs the thought struck me that the way we all want more money is one of the problems with today’s world …. My wife who now lives in a pensioners’ flat would like a dog but Council says NO …. but the reason why my wife doesn’t have cat [Council permitted] is as a responsible person the possible likelihood of vet bills puts her off as she lives on a pension. I think this is rather sad.

Councils spent nearly $250,000 on these trips with Mayors, Chinese businesses and Governments covering the rest of the costs. Global Air Freight Decline Now Worst Since 2008 Financial Crisis … Zerohedge

The escalating trade war between the US and China has accelerated the synchronized global downturn. Global exports continue to collapse, and the global Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) remains under 50, stuck in contraction territory. All of these ominous signals indicate a global trade recession could be imminent in 2020.

New data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows global air freight volumes, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), plunged 3.9% in August YoY, and this was the tenth consecutive month of contraction and the most extended decline since the 2008 financial crisis.
