        2. It is not compulsory to read any post I place here on KB, or to visit the links I post.
        
        3. You have failed to provide a reason as to why the GWPF shouldn’t give a commentary on an interview (in a very obscure Finnish Magazine) by the SG of the WMO.
        
        4. Are you willing to provide us with some insight about your ability to critique sources?
        
        5. My history is fairly well known….but some years working as a science editor, as a Consultant editor for Dictionary of NZ English, as a Science writer and fact-checker for an Online Encyclopedia, and as a consultant reviewer for Book manuscripts has meant that I can usually sort out spin from substance.

  Thanks Maggy, very interesting, so much in there but I noted the last line:

  Considering Stuff has closed off all debate, the likes of TVNZ and Radio NZ generally cover only one side of the debate (and downplay the other side of the debate), I feel NZ MSM need to self-reflect and re-examine their stance. Do they want to be seen as propagandists (for the CC extremists) and alarmists (hurting children’s health and well-being)?
  
  The only MSM outlet in NZ that is challenging the CC extremist narrative are the hosts of MagicTalk talkback radio – a lone beacon of hope in an increasingly alarmist and one-sided debate.

Biggest mistake of Kiwibuild is the idea that first home buyers can afford a brand new house. Almost always entry level houses for first home buyers are in cheaper areas and older houses.

  First home buyers can afford a new house. Not a 280M2 4 bed 2 bath job tho.
  A modest 3 bed one a tight section is very possible. Build cost is less than $300K but the land component kills it and its the land that Kiwibuild should have focused on.

    Historically high interest rates meant you could move ‘up the ladder’ a few years after buying first home. Inflation rapidly reduced mortgages. Now low interest rates, high house prices 30 year mortgages and huge agent fees (1 year disposable income) make it unaffordable to trade up. Quite sensible for FHB to try and skip small house, they will have families to house in a few years

      I am glad you are not my investment advisor.
      Its cheaper to buy than rent and the capital gain made on even a modest home will pay off agents fees (if you use one) many times over.
      
      Why cant a FHB live in a 3 bed 120M2 home for 10 years while the kids are small?
      
      The real trade up should be in location and less travel time as that is what affects quality of life as your kids are more demanding.

      A large part of moving up the ladder was to buy a rather decrepit old home and put in a lot of effort and a bit of money to do it up, thereby increasing its value. This option is obviously not available to first time new home buyers

    To my mind, at least 20% of the people need HNZ with a flat pack factory near Hamilton building 2-3 bed room units for the regions.
    
    The present Labour lot can’t do it, they are useless.

  Yep, a small footprint plot and 2-3 bedroom house.
  $300k max.
  In UK in 70’s starter homes had 2 floors with only the Bathroom upstairs finished.
  Downstairs the Lounge/dining room, Kitchen and sep Bedroom (study) finished.
  Owners could do the upstairs as they could afford it.
  or do it themselves. (wired but just framed).

  The single most insurmountable problem with building low-cost houses is that there are very few places to build them. Every subdivision these days has covenants designed to protect the new home building owners from cheap affordable housing be built or transported on the sections in the subdivision.
  If any govt. no matter what colour or inclination wants to build low cost as we did in the ’70s then they have to either outlaw covenants of that kind, (not going to happen as the subdividers and new owners have property rights, so without them doing this then its a no) or the govt. has to develop the subdivision with the appropriate rules.
  There is nothing wrong with building a subdivision, leasing the ground for 100 years or more at a small annual rental and allowing the new owners to build, move on a new build, low-cost house or even an older house to refurbish. They don’t need flash garages as part of a house, they can come later. Just paths, clothesline, fences and grass.
  
  We did that back then. Still have a number of houses like that, including one I did a few years back on a back section.
  
  If we want to fix housing then that is what needs doing.
  Twyford knew that but failed to get the subdivisions going and past the councils.
  
  Bob the Builder wanted to do that in Tauranga BUT, the council frustrated him and stopped him. He has since sold the area to another company who want start for another 4-5 years and their houses will be not affordable like they are now.
  
  We can guess who pressured the councillors not to allow Bob to get this done.

A very good article from American greatness about the Trump agenda and its pushback against globalisation. America is pushing back against China which has been the big globalisation winner and is supporting the workers of America who made things and has been the big loser. Trump’s support for the forgotten men and women of America is praiseworthy and thoroughly Christian.

Here in NZ we have had the same phenomenon. Tariffs were cut, good local companies went to the wall and many people lost their jobs and their prosperity and have never found them again. We used to manufacture things in NZ. Now we send our raw material like untreated logs on a boat to China.

This is an issue for all NZers. Do we want to be a nation of globalist consumers waiting for our next cheap package from Amazon? Or are we going to recover our nation and our self respect and start making things again?

    Its about personal preferences. I would love to live in a log cabin – in fact I intend to as my next property. It will of course have have wood-fired central heating, and immense thermal mass. Paid for by me working as an expert professional!
    
    The reason for this is not that I’ve become a tinfoil hat wearing prepper. It’s simply that on the evidence, I do not trust successive governments to focus on their core functions.
    
    At the moment it doesn’t matter because I have skills and a good income.
    
    But, when I move to a fixed income, this will matter an awful lot. Ask any pensioner how they are enjoying power and supermarket prices when their savings are delivering less than 2%!
    
    Massive over-reach on “climate”, immigration and open-borders and all the other causes held dear by the right thinking people, have propelled NZ into a low wage economy with higher food, energy, housing and land prices, with worse infrastructure than almost any of our equivalent countries.
    
    top half of the OECD, Pah! at the rate we are going, we’ll be expelled in a decade for making the charts look bad.

    Is it a zero sum game as some people suggest? At the moment we do not have trade that is free or fair. China rips off America, that is well documented. Is it fair to assume that China is ripping us off too? That China is dumping cheap goods on the market to destroy local businesses? I think that’s very possible.
    Do we want to be reliant on China? I think we in NZ are very capable of making things of good quality and at a reasonable price. But since the 80’s our local businesses haven’t had a chance. Because of china’s many unfair trading practices.
    We will only become prosperous when we add value to our excellent raw products. But we need an even playing field.

  Years ago companies in NZ used to manufacture/assemble things like cars and tvs protected by regulations prohibiting their importation.
  Effectively this meant that the general population paid far too much for this stuff so that a few thousand workers had jobs in those industries.

    New Zealand can and does compete in several fields, even excel. That is where our effort should be going, not in trying to bring bulk socks and underwear manufacturing back here.
    
    I guess we could set up Sock City Aotearoa, powered by wind and paying the living wage. Eketahuna would be a good location.

  But we have always sent our raw logs overseas.
  We cannot make them into anything useful here.
  So why would companies overseas buy our products.
  
  Eg we used to make furniture here in NZ.
  Now its all flat pack crap.

What price MMP. Just think about this one. here we have a Labour List MP. The same wee man is what is known as a three time Electoral seat loser. Yes the NZ voters refused to elect David Parker to win an electoral seat. Yet here he is as a List MP allegedly putting the boot in to farmers on so called water quality,when infact they are way ahead of what Parker and his cohorts have chosen to ignore. As well as scaring the life out of West Coast of South Island hard working residents ,when all they wanted was a chance to increase employment with their special project.
Parker vetoed it against all common sense requirements.

Jacinda’s and David Clark’s Pork Barrel Politics are about to come back to bite them on the arse. It seems the $60 million given to Pharmac to fight cancer with new and better drugs is not quite true as it is also for other illnesses. Then Pharmac releases a statement that they won’t be making a decision on what new drug they will purchase to April 2020 leading to statements from those involved to say 200 lives have been lost already to this disease with 100 more through this decision also likely. Is there anything that this Health Minster has a say in is the truth as the Menagcocle vaccines bulls up ,the Measles epidemic with not enough vaccines and the lies in there cancer plan.

My youngest daughter is getting married this afternoon at St Michael & all Angels Church in Christchurch.
She will be 18 later this month and despite chronic pain sings like an angel herself and is marvelously mulit-talented.
She is marrying a young Maori bloke training in IT, also very creative.
I was only 18 when I started out on that journey–the genes will not be denied.
An exciting future awaits.
