Hydrogen, an element described as “odourless, tasteless and colourless”, is being hailed as a promising solution to the world’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Or put more accurately, hydrogen is the latest desperate clutching at straws by wind/solar power advocates, who really, really want some form of practical large-scale energy storage to overcome the inherent limitations of their beloved Gaia-approved energy sources.

Hydrogen is not exactly something new. Hydrogen powered cars have been around for decades, hydrogen fuel-cells powered the Apollo command modules, and there have even been prototype hydrogen powered aircraft. For various reasons it hasn’t been practical for most applications and hasn’t been widely adopted. There’s no particular reason to think anything has changed.

  “Thanks to New Zealand’s abundant renewable energy, Woods said New Zealand could produce some of the cleanest green hydrogen in the world.”
  
  This implies that we have considerable surplus renewable generation capacity? Do we? I thought we had next to none. And producing hydrogen requires lots and lots and lots of electricity.
  
  Something does not stack up. It would be good to hear from an energy market expert on whether this is a viable game.
  
  Also what are the economics of transporting large volumes of pressurised hydrogen by ship? If I recall my chemistry, it is difficult and expensive to contain the gas. It is also frightenly volatile.

      A hydrogen ion is a proton. This makes it relatively easy for hydrogen to “sneak” through solids, especially metals.

      Wikipedia doesn’t seem to agree with you. According to this article on Hydrogen storage it can have a very low permeation. Doesn’t that mean it won’t go through the walls of the container?

In Australia for example there is a company already looking to play a significant role across three multi-billion dollar global markets. HAZER® is also looking to provide high quality synthetic graphite for energy storage and other large global graphite applications.
    The HAZER® Process takes two ubiquitous and cheap feedstocks (natural gas and iron ore), and uses these to generate two high value, high demand products (hydrogen & synthetic graphite) with global market applications. The core of their technology is the use of iron-ore as a low-cost catalyst for the gas decomposition reaction, which gives them a strong commercial advantage for accessing both hydrogen and high-quality graphite markets.

    Hydrogen Production Process Technologies
    
    Today, 95% of hydrogen is produced either from wood or from fossil fuels, such as natural gas and oil. Three types of production process are currently in use:
    
    The most common hydrogen production process is natural gas reforming — sometimes called steam methane reforming because it uses high-temperature steam. When exposed to steam and heat, the carbon (C) atoms of methane (CH4) separate. After two successive reactions, they reform separately to produce hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide (co₂)). This operation therefore requires natural gas.
    Another process is charcoal gasification1. Charcoal consists mainly of carbon and water. Burned in a reactor at a very high temperature of between 1,200 and 1,500 °C, the charcoal releases gas that separates and reforms to produce hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO).
    Hydrogen can also be produced using electricity, through electrolysis of water. An electric current is used to split water (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2). This method is not as cost-effective as using fossil fuels. Hydrogen produced by steam methane reforming costs around €1.5 per kilogram at the plant gate (excluding distribution costs), triple the cost of natural gas. Hydrogen produced using electrolysis is currently around four times more expensive, even before the cost of the electricity required is factored in.
    Begs a couple of questions
    1.Is it cost effective to make Hydrogen as a fuel, when you are using a fuel source to make it? (electric, hydrocarbon, wood etc.)
    2. Is it really cleaner? or Is the waste just hidden? When you get bi product from the manufacture.

  Hydrogen is not a fuel per se. You cannot mine it. Hydrogen has to be made – mainly in one of two ways:
  1) Take methane or other hydrocarbon (hydrogen and carbon) and react it to take out the carbon, leaving the hydrogen. Hugely wasteful and expensive process.
  2) Electrolysis: use electricity to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen. Again, very wasteful.
  
  Thus hydrogen is not an energy source. It is, at best, an energy transfer mechanism and a poor one at that.
  
  The whole “hydrogen economy” is a scam.

        Yup rangi, steam + methane => hydrogen + CO2.
        Scrub the CO2 and dump it into the atmosphere (or do other things with it) and you have pure, CO2-free hydrogen.
        
        So the process of burning this hydrogen still generates CO2, just not at the tailpipe.
        
        It’s a bit like driving an EV and forgetting that your tailpipe is really at Huntley.

        Coal gas is usually steam plus hydrocarbons gives a mix of CO, H2, and other products. The CO and H2 burn, with the CO being the “bad” part that made the old coal gas an effective way to commit suicide (head in the oven – lots of old stories that use this as a plot device etc). With methane that doesn’t work.
        
        The process Abarak refers to above is supposed to extract the H2 from methane and to extract the C as graphite so there’s no immediate CO2 release. If economic it is a great idea.
        
        Hydrogen however is far from an ideal fuel for practical reasons. It is difficult to store especially long term, and it can at certain concentrations form spontaneously flammable mixtures in air.
        
        It might well be worth exploring options to create hydrocarbons from atmospheric CO2 and water and to burn those. That would be carbon neutral and could take advantage of the extensive network of existing HC distribution hardware. So far an economical way of doing this hasn’t really emerged, but if we have plentiful renewable electricity it can be done.
        
        About time NZ invested in a couple of large nuclear installations to provide baseload power and then we can use our surplus of “renewables” to start creating such a process.

        I vote we devote our entire wind and solar generation to hydrogen production schemes.
        
        Since this power is free (so we’re told) it should go a long way to improving the economics of the scheme.
        
        Removing the those sources from the national grid will also have the benefit of keeping domestic power prices down.

  Just a thought didn’t Japan spend billions to get where they are today on Hydrogen, I could be wrong but if that is the case how is Taranaki going to be the hub for NZ Hydrogen eith only 38 million invested by the Coalition.

      In the Financial Times report on hydrogen as fuel: “It starts with brown coal in Australia, which will be gasified to produce low-cost hydrogen, with the carbon pumped back underground.”
      
      We have a vast reserve of brown coal (lignite) in Southland and east Otago.
      
      Hydrogen exports? That would help NZ’s long-standing balance-of-payments deficits.

        You are right stephie. You could manufacture hydrogen via electrolysis using a diesel powered generator. No coal required. Those smart Aussie’s are already ahead of you, using diesel generators to charge electric car batteries.

  I heard it blew up and they stopped making it, a long time ago.
  Q: Where would they plan to “make” the Hydrogen and what do ya think will happen to property value near it?

  Toyota & Honda are both producing albeit limited numbers of Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars and neither company is known for being financially stupid so perhaps they know something that we don’t just yet. Technology changes and improves over time and it not beyond reason that hydrogen may become an economical & practical vehicle fuel, I note that when current batteries are replaced a fuel cell replacement will do the same job effectively recycling the car.

    Most vehicle fuel cells use a hydrocarbon source for the H2, not pure H2. Experimental ones can use H2 because they don’t typically need a distribution system with all the challenges that introduces.

  She is just as bad on RNZ. It was funny listening to her comment her way (she doesn’t give answers) to Dann’s questions about the measles outbreak (it’s only an outbreak in Auckland – not a national one).
  Anyhow, she was being asked why the CoL had got rid of the previous targets, while not setting new targets. This despite saying they needed to achieve a “target” of 95% of target children immunized, when we’ve only achieved 91%. So, there is a target to achieve, but we don’t have a target or a plan to achieve.
  
  Why? Because it is too bureaucratic!

    His trial started on Monday at the Auckland District Court in front of Judge Russell Collins and a jury.
    
    He was arrested in June 2018 after allegations arose of a man sexually assaulting four teenagers, aged 16 to 18, during the Waihi camp in February.
    
    The “Stuff” article does not provide Judge Collins’ rationale for his suppression of the defendant’s name. Be that as it may, the suppression order seems to me to imply a novel procedure that could be applied conceivably in any criminal trial:
    
    a) Charge a defendant in Court with the alleged criminal offence(s), but automatically suppress his / her name; at least until the trial verdict becomes known.
    
    b) If the defendant is found guilty, then – and only then – is his / her name permitted to be published.
    
    c) If the defendant is found not guilty, that person’s name becomes suppressed permanently.
    
    Is this the way Judge Collins’ mind is leading in respect of all criminal charges, or has he a particular, undeclared reason or justification for name suppression in this case?

Winston, “It’s my job to know”
Yesterday, with a Newshub item headlined “Paula Bennett tells Winston Peters to ‘lighten up’ and ‘get a sense of humour’ “, a video showed Winston Peters in a 2017 interview, commenting on the initial breaking of the superannuation overpayment issue, which stemmed from questions asked by Newshub’s Lloyd Burr.

Winston says [3m.30secs in] “… Lloyd wasn’t the only person privacy [sic] to this information, which by the way he said was a leak from Inland Revenue – now, that’s a crime – and frankly I was on alert when he called me, and I decided I would find out who his source was; he blurted out “IRD” – that’s criminal.” [1]

So it would seem Lloyd Burr publicly broke the story on a Saturday, and within 48 hours Winston made a statement, in which he gave fuller “private details” on the matter than any other source, at any time, appears to have done.

And as Winston states that Burr said his source was an IRD leak, one wonders why Winston currently is still suing others for that indiscretion – non IRD people – in particular Paula Bennett, and that the defence of some of those people reportedly involves taxpayer finance.

  We need a bit of both, Poppa. There are plenty of adults of all ages playing sport in social or semi-social grades or for work teams. They play to win, but it’s not the main reason for being there.
  
  I’ve coached or helped coach kid teams in a number of sports, and I always stressed the try your hardest, give it “heaps”, get stuck in, and have fun. So long as they were doing that, I didn’t care overly about the final result (but we always liked to win, that was a goal, and they were always competetive).

    As a Christian, I find it embarrassing when people come out saying Harry Potter is evil, or corrupting our young people, or whatever. It’s the same as people who complain about Enid Blyton books. These people are reading far too much into these books, and looking at them from a far too literal perspective.
    
    I rather suspect that the vast majority of children who read them actually understand the concepts of fiction and fantasy far better than these adults give them credit for. The kids KNOW that it’s made up, fictional fantasy, and a harmless bit of escapism.
    
    Adults that decry these books need to rediscover their own imagination.

  Even Corin Dann appeared to be exasperated at times when interviewing Ardern on Morning Report (although unlike when interviewing Simon Bridges he barely interrupted her and let her get away with long waffling answers).
  
  Was pleased though that Corin had done some research on the subject matter beforehand – he landed a beauty on Ardern when he said something like in the US there are around 1000 people infected with measles but their population was 200-300 million whereas NZ also has around 1000 measles cases but our population was only 4-5 million in comparison.
  
  Cue a long blah blah blah reply from Ardern to skirt around the topic but unfortunately Corin let her waffle instead of pulling her up!

    Dann, landed 3 good ones on her:
    1. About what is a target and what is not a target and why the CoL scrapped them and then put nothing in place;
    2. About the measles outbreak in the US and there being only 1000 cases there; and then as Maggy has pointed out the question as to whether there should be compulsory vaccinations for children as in Vic and SA. Instead she resorted to misinformation (using statistics incorrectly or as Tall Man would put it – lied).
    
    Every week, she reminds us:
    1. How lacking in talent the Labour caucus is and why you shouldn’t vote Labour;
    2. Why you shouldn’t believe or trust the Toxic Gnome and should not vote NZF; and

Our new Race Relations Commissioner, Meng Foon, in an interview on Stuff today says:

” … the right to actually voice your opinion is still very important, as long as it’s not detrimental to individuals and organisations.

So Meng Foon plans to widen his role from investigating and ruling on complaints of racial discrimination, to being the arbiter on what New Zealanders say and post.

“Detrimental to individuals and organisations?” – that’s Draconian.

With a Corbynist from the UK installed as Human Rights Commissioner and Foon’s boss, we can expect some controversial rulings.

Foon also has views on revising teaching of history in NZ.

But on freedom of speech alone, Foon is buying a fight.

IMHO Greta Thunberg is being exploited and abused. It appears she suffers from several issues. She is being used as a shield by the Climate Change trolley cases knowing that she wont be challenged or ridiculed due to her being a child who suffers from said issues.
She is a pawn in their game and I believe will ultimately pay a price from being abused.

Her backers will then blame we who are Climate Change questioners so seek to make capital out of a situation they caused.

  Pharmac do a good job rationing out scarce resources. They know what works and what is unproven.
  I suspect the delays concerning cancer is not drugs, although there is always a miracle cure being promoted. The delays are probably in diagnosis and the initial clinical stages. That is a matter for the overall health budget as DHB’s administer that and on balance do a reasonable job among all the competition for dollars.
  These delays have affected me but by comparison NZ has excellent public health services and I couldn’t expect more. If everyone can jump the queue who can afford to fund that? I sense that clinicians are very conscious of doing the best they can.

The spam phone calls continue, purporting to come from Spark and threatening imminent cutting off of broadband.

For some time they have used an automated calling system, with a Western accent, as most people are now wised up to Asian-accent “Spark” calls.

Surely Spark could have nailed these pricks by now. Perhaps offering a reward would help, or some help to the police in the foreign land that the calls come from. Either that, or hire a triad.

It seems to me that the grievance industry has got the mainstream media by the short and curlies – it’s taking over the discourse.

Lincoln University has become the first tertiary provider in New Zealand to back this month’s nationwide strike against climate change.

Young people across the country will once again stay away from school on Friday, September 27 as part of the NZ Strike for Climate.

It will be the third time school students have taken to the streets this year – following demonstrations in March and May – but this time campaigners hope universities will join the action.

Acting vice-chancellor professor Bruce McKenzie said although lectures will continue, Lincoln staff and students can strike without needing to take time off or explain their non-attendance.

Call me old-fashioned, but I thought a university was first and foremost about education and research. Ye good olde Wikipedia (which probably has as much authority these days as some of the more ‘woke’ universities and other seats of learning) tells me that “the word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means “community of teachers and scholars”.

Bruce McKenzie says that lectures will continue, but in the same breath states that “Lincoln staff and students can strike without needing to take time off or explain their non-attendance.” If the STAFF can “strike” – and I presume this includes lecturers – how do they intend to deliver the lectures? Haul in some drunk off the street, pay him $200 and tell him to stand up the front and waffle on about biochemistry or whatever the class happens to be studying?

Hell, if I was a student at this university I’d be furious.

I would have thought that the 80th anniversary of such a thing would be worth at least a **passing mention**…….
