      And, The King can further relax, comfortable in the knowledge that there are still tens of thousands of eventual National-voting actual migrants – with Permanent Residency visas – flooding into the country from places like South Africa, the UK and China, to greatly offset the effect that those migrants that *he* disapproves of might have on the outcome of future elections.

        I would welcome business people from Taiwan into a New Zealand centre-right party, but would be suspicious of the “entrepreneurs” from the People’s Republic of China.
        
        Keith Holyoake and Rob Muldoon would spin in their coffins if they knew former members of the Chinese Communist Party now had influence in the Auckland National Party.
        
        Many of the successful business people in China, and nearly all of China’s billionaires, are members of “the party”.

        Just to be clear, my original response was to rockape, not to The King.
        
        It is indeed The King who did not read the article (at least carefully). The two ‘Work to Residence’ restrictions he refers to, in response to rockape, are two of the six restrictions that the new ‘Temporary Work Visas’ are replacing.

      Yes, the push to lower the voting age is as dangerous as it is specious. It’s also a fairly blatant attempt to move the voting distribution to the left. However, while I personally don’t want to see that happen, it doesn’t constitute a principled argument against the idea.
      
      The correct argument is that everyone is an idiot when they’re 16. I sure was. It wasn’t my fault any more than it’s the fault of those who are presently 16. It just comes with the territory of being 16. Giving 16-year-olds the vote is equivalent in wisdom to giving Bowie knives to toddlers. I’d prefer to raise the voting age to about 28.

      Real simple approach would be to give everyone the vote, with each person’s vote being weighted in proportion to how much income tax they pay (IRD has records). Ideally include businesses and corporates. If you try to shift the tax burden on to others then you lose power.

  If that reflects the general calibre of Verity Johnson’s ‘columns’ then yeah, nah I’ll skip them from now on.
  
  The only further interest I now have is what Verity will think of this column in 25-30 years time (struggling under the daily grind, with her and her partner still paying off their mortgage, perhaps kids still at home, taxation north of 50-60%, realising how much there is still to do to get ready for retirement etc etc etc) and being assailed daily by young knowitalls who think they, alone, have all the answers to all the world’s problems (and which I guarantee will involve more govt spending and more taxation) and saying that Verity should be ashamed of the state she and her generation have left the world in.
  
  Perhaps it might then occur to Verity how vacuous, threadbare and ill-lettered her column today is.

    A statesman thinks about the next generation, a politician thinks about the next election. Ideas about reducing the voting age, putting election booths in K-Mart and prisons, and increasing handouts is all about buying votes for the next election.
    
    The plastic bag ban was decided by her whipping up support in vulnerable children and getting them to sign a petition. 2 use plastic bags have their place, and NZ does not actually have a problem with plastic bags. India and China do, so saying that NZ is the problem by banning plastic bags here, could be compared with blaming blacks or Jews for crimes committed by white people.
    
    The real problem with pollution and converting land to dairying etc is caused by population growth.
    
    Jacinda is all about sustainability, and I must have missed the news article where she said she wanted to set an example on sustainability and over population by having her tubes tied and/or Clarke having his boys snipped, so that they don’t have another million dollar baby courtesy of the taxpayer.

The $4.5 million commercial property negotiation took several attempts, but the Category One Heritage listing will now be a base for teaching and research through a partnership with the University of Canterbury.

• Is Megan Woods being purposely provocative to use the word ‘taonga’ in this case,
where it seems Ihuāmatao should be examined to see if it has similar worth to the nation?

• Fletchers purchased Ihuāmatao for $19 million (property records).
Various commentators are discussing should the Government need to buy it for $40 million?
“We won’t be spending 40-million on buying that land.” – Phil Goff [1]

If it is purchased as heritage land, Fletchers should add a reasonable margin to recover their expenses so far, but surely the potential to build houses on it, is what determines the Auckland Council land value at $35.7 million.

Is this comment for or against Government purchasing Ihuāmatao?
Neither.
It just questions if Kate Sheppard’s home means more to Ardern, Woods and Labour, and the UN.
It just hopes, if purchased, the argument doesn’t obscure what the land is actually worth.
And if Fletchers can’t build houses on it, should anyone else do the same?

Notably: the Maori King, Tūheitia Pōtatau, said: “Mana whenua agree they want their land returned, so they can make decisions about its future.[2]
“So they can decide …” is a Treaty Settlement in principle, and they may build houses on it, rather than it be a specific historic park or working archelogical farm or reserve of interest to the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, as is Otuataua Stonefields, which already is reserved.

So any Ministry for Culture and Heritage consideration of purchase needs to establish the proposed use of the land, its national importance and also establish if the land’s previous status has been taken into account in any Treaty Settlement and already compensated for.

      My sources are same ones who argued Trump had a fighting chance in 2016 and they were able to give very detailed reasons as to why. This was mainly due to feedback from grassroots level in the “Blue Wall” states that indicated a massive swing to Trump that was not being picked up in polls or media.
      
      In the election aftermath the autopsy revealed local “door knocker” Democrat campaigners tried desperately to get the message to Hillary Clinton about this trend but were blocked by party apparatchiks.

  All on red – some very good points. The Elizabeth Warren candidacy is problematic in that she, as you correctly allude to, is not very popular amongst black voters. She of course has claimed Indian status but was found to have about 1000th of a percent of Native American genetics!
  
  Presumably women will vote for her? I can’t see how anyone would as she comes across to me as the hectoring aunt that you try and avoid at family gatherings. But maybe that’s just me and well educated white women find her irresistible?
  
  Whether she gets millennial’s or not is also a question? You would not know it through the mainstream media but Donald J Trump is very popular among some young people. You just have to go on Instagram and look for “students for Trump” and there are a lot of young smiling faces!
  
  Trump is continuing to pack out stadiums with a big overflow of people who can’t get in. The claims of Elizabeth Warren attracting 20,000 people appear to be way overblown. Unfortunately we can’t get a total handle on this because the mainstream media accept the figures given to them by the Warren campaign. I have seen drone shots of the campaign in New York where she was supposed to have had a crowd of 20,000 in a park that only holds 10,000 and which was not even full.
  
  But Elizabeth Warren is a serious contender to get the primary vote. The other thing to take into account is that the United States has never elected a woman for Pres. One can only hope they won’t make an exception in Elizabeth Warren’s particular case.

Operation Burnham – note: some repetitive material
The hearings were suspended after a register of classified documents was presented to the inquiry team.
After a Native Affairs documentary in 2014, the bundle was found in the safe. Then-Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman was furious and contacted former defence chief Tim Keating.
Dr Coleman corrected the public record but Tim Keating did not.
The report, from the International Security Assistance Force, said civilian casualties may have occurred, contradicting public statements by the Defence Force that deaths were unlikely. [1]

On Wednesday morning a post here on kiwiblog asked –
Should the first absolute fact not be the establishment of who exactly was killed?
– and pointed out from the Speech notes for Press Conference on Operation Burnham, the then-Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General Tim Keating said –
“Let me turn now to the ISAF-Afghan Government inquiry. 
Some days after the operation, the Provincial Governor of Baghlan Province, Governor Mojid, received a delegation of villagers who claimed that “a very big operation had occurred with helicopters…that some landed and the operation was firing at civilians and left. The locals claimed that six civilians were killed, 4 adult males, 1 adult female and one child aged six. Additionally there were two adult females being treated in a local hospital for wounds” [2]
That is 4 adult males, 1 adult female and one child aged six

– opposed to “Hit& Run” book Jon Stephenson and Nicky Hager assertion –
5 adult males and one girl child aged three, named ‘Fatima’ [3]

As can be seen above, unless there is a mistake, it appears Lieutenant General Tim Keating is quoting from the Report from the International Security Assistance Force, Monday, 27 March 2017
The report, or its crucial portion, which supposedly has just halted the Operation Burnham Inquiry, has been publicly available for about two and a half years.

Perhaps now someone will yet notice the discrepancy between that report and the Stephenson/Hager book regarding who was actually killed.

  Compensation would surely be the end point of any investigation into casualty deaths.
  And moronic as it may sound, it would be best to compensate the right people.
  Apart from other moral considerations, it would be important to compensate actual family members dependent on those who died, or condolence payments for loss of quality of life – loosing a child.
  
  WASHINGTON (Reuters) – In March 2014, the U.S. military paid an Afghan man just over $1,000 to compensate for killing his civilian son in an operation near the border with Iran, according to U.S. military records released to Reuters. Six months later, another Afghan father was given $10,000 by the U.S. military after his child, also a civilian, was killed in an American-led military operation in the same province. [1]
  
  A point may be that, if the casualties could be truly identified and those appropriate to compensation properly determined, it could be morally more correct to actually compensate those entitled, than hold the Inquiry –
  Cost of Operation Burnham inquiry blows out to $7m after first day of public hearings [2]
  
  Of course the irony is that paying 6 victims families perhaps even twice the US value of compensation
  [US$120,000 total, NZ$188775.00] would have left the Inquiry NZ$ 6.81 million (about 36 times the compensation) to try and work out who to pay the compensation to.
  
  But – Afghan villagers pull out of Operation Burnham inquiry.
  The Afghan villagers involved with the inquiry into Operation Burnham say they have lost faith in the process and will no longer take part.
  The statement pointed out that the withdrawal came shortly after the inquiry proposed a process to travel to Afghanistan and hear evidence directly from the villagers. [3]
  
  So, if the villagers are not longer part of the investigation, can if ever be successfully concluded?

The numbers are heading down. There’s only 5 years data shown but being able to fit a straight line across the 4 peaks suggest very strongly that this decline will continue. A declining GDP seems baked in.

Have we exceeded our capacity to grow? I don’t believe it is directly political–the present incompetents could change nothing anyway and this predates them. I’m not attributing fault. Whats is going on? Any ideas?

I have done a lot of this type of analytical work so have good reason to be concerned.

  When it comes to GM, it is the green left who are anti-science. In both cases right prefer less regulation and tax and the left prefer more. That’s what the real difference is.

I would prefer a stronger focus on passing exams, becoming professional, learning various technical subjects, learning useful languages, mathematics & sciences etc.

Police have admitted they did not follow best practice after three inmates overpowered a guard and escaped from Levin court. Police say only two officers were guarding four inmates, which is not enough. The offenders are still on the run
There was another incident which saw a long hunt for an offender who rammed a police car before stealing a patrol car and two guns.

DPF deleted the comment, and Stephieboy (as the snivelling coward we’ve come to know) denied making the comment. But Maggy and others, including Sooty himself, saw it.
      
      Stephieboy has a long history of making poor-taste comments. If DPF/moderators delete a comment, he denies making the comment. If DPF/moderators don’t delete a comment, he claims that it’s been taken out of context. He also repeatedly plays the victim card and says everyone is really mean to him.
      
      I don’t know what more evidence the Kiwiblog moderation team thinks it needs. I’m happy to assist Maggy, and I suspect others are too, to use real-life options to make Stephieboy accountable for his online behaviour.

    Well I’ve given my rationale plenty of times before and this was a comment to an opinion with no rationale either.
    
    But…
    
    Okay then, what issues do you think will either motivate Labour voters to switch allegiance or to mobilise non-voters to to go to the polls and vote against Labour?
    
    Nothing that gets people on this blog excited is going to make the slightest difference to the above. They don’t care about sexual shenanigans and Czech drug dealers. Hell they don’t even care about the disaster that is Kiwibuild or disappearing health and education targets. They like the money being splashed around for teachers and nurses and right now the economy is doing ok.
    
    Labour are riding high, their voters still love them at a time when the floating voters don’t find National appealing.
    
    Labour has also played a blinder with the weed-referendum, anyone that doesn’t ordinarily vote but that turns out to vote yes for that is 2 ticks red, those opposed already turn up to vote Nat so no gains to be made there.
    
    They’ve got it in the bag and the polling shows that, there’s also SFA that National can do about it, it’s absolutely Labour’s to lose.

    Homeless – moved on, nothing in the papers so don’t exist
    Child poverty – likewise but also “they’re trying”
    GDP – “you what?” seriously they haven’t been affected yet, that’s a problem for rich business owners, Also the “wellness” indicators are up
    Confidence – see above
    Land claim – urban Labour voters want it returned
    
    Nothing there to change minds or mobilise the floaters

      FFS, 36% voted for ardern. Not 50% and with the voters deserting watermelons and “what’s in it for wynston” faster than a fart leaks out of your undies there isn’t a hope in hell the idiot and her cohorts will be back.
      
      A bunch of people wanting to give her the tick during the term is completely irrelevant come tick the ballot time.

        National hasn’t polled anywhere near 50% since they lost the election and as ACT ain’t going to get them over the line they are screwed. You do realise that Labour voters hold National responsible for the current problems don’t you?
        
        So, 2 years in, disasters aplenty and they’re still outpolling the Nats. As long as JA is there, they’re a shoe-in for 2020.

    Curriculum – “about time, and we’re getting NZ history”
    Kiwibuild – “at least they tried, National did nothing for 9 years”
    Light rail – “fewer cars, less pollution that’s a good thing”
    Homeless – “that was National”
    Child poverty – “they can’t undo the damage in 3 years”
    GDP – “growth isn’t everything, we need to move to a more sustainable model and I got a new iPhone”
    Business confidence – “not my problem, I got a pay rise”
    Ihumatao – “white colonists stole it so it should be given back” (nb I refer you to comments yesterday where maori elders are giving tacit approval to their young people to not accept full & final.
