    In the news tomorrow: ‘In a purely coincidental and unfortunate incident, all the written & video testimonies of his accusers, plus all the evidence collected at Epstein’s island were mixed up with boxes of scrap paper and sent to a document destruction company.
    Also Ghislaine Maxwell,Epstein’s alleged madam died while traveling aboard the airplane owned by Epstein while travelling to NY to be deposed by investigators. Maxwell choked to death on an English muffin she was having for breakfast, just before the plane crashed and burned.
    In a further development, the prison warden who ordered Epstein to be taken off suicide watch, an unnamed prison guard and the A/V tech in charge of the surveillance cameras, shoot each other to death in an apparent gay love triangle murder suicide pact.’

      Yup, the moment I read a royal was possibly implicted, I thought the “firm” would ensure the problem goes away. Between the Clintons and the Royals, this guy had no chance. Of course, it could just have been suicide. Epstein would have been looking at years of “Hide the sausage with Bubba”, and quiet frankly I think I’d top myself if faced with the same future.     Epstein was on suicide watch, he was removed from the list and apparently the mandatory paperwork for such a removal has not been filed; the also mandatory 30 minute checks done 24×7 were not carried out that night on Epstein; the video feeds to his cell also became defective and remained so overnight.
    
    If you were to assemble a list of actions and circumstances that would absolutely scream conspiracy to murder, could wouldn’t really need to add any more, would you ?
    
    And to be clear, this wouldn’t be the Trump people as in the very recent release of documents relating to Epstein’s earlier conviction, Trump is completely exonerated by that witness anyway.
    
    At least Bill Barr has come out with a statement highly critical of the circumstances and announcing a high level investigation into the same. I for one would be checking on the whereabouts of Sid Blumenthal and Cody Shearer for a start.

    At the risk of being morbid – remove article of clothing and loop around bars in door, put head in loop and sit down. As long as your arse doesn’t get to the floor you will be able to pass out and die if not cut free. Or be rendered unconscious and put in that position as Epstein seems to have been last week.
    
    A 15 minute check is usually instituted to prevent such, and some special cells have no points to use to create the noose or loop.
    
    But possible it is, if you don’t monitor frequently and preferably use special cells and special soft weak clothing.

So some lawyers are lining up to take a complaint about conditions in NZ prisons to the United Nations. And UN members who run the crappiest prisons will no doubt be quick off the mark to condemn NZ. Perhaps UN should look at nearby prisons such as the Fed run Metropolitan Correctional Centre, the nearby NY city run ‘Tombs’ and Sing Sing up the river. I suspect these are a bit worse than NZ prisons.

Epstein dead, almost all reports insert Trump connection as he had a trip on his ‘lolita express’ plane and Clinton (Bill) had 26! And yet no differentiation between when both names mentioned in any Epstein article….I dunno, it seems if Trump wins next year’s election the Democrats will have a serious meltdown!

    Scott – a sad bunch true, but even more importantly, the MSM have permanently destroyed their own credibility in their obsessive drive to undermine and bring down President Trump. And that credibility is gone forever, the traditional modes of MSM delivery are all dead or dying – and they have nobody but themselves to blame. The internet has enabled the public to be better informed than ever, and the transparency of the media bias is now so blatantly obvious to us all. Life is too busy for the citizens to waste their time being force-fed hamfisted media propaganda, where all the traditional basic tenets of honest journalism have been abandoned. The vanity and naivety of the (often young, immature) “journalists” assuming we can’t see past them would be hilarious were it not so catastrophic for the survival of the once vital and great fourth estate.

I wonder if Trump’s greatest legacy will be his use of twitter to bypass the traditional media filters and communicate directly to the people – and the hysterical sensationalism and dishonesty of the media reaction leading to their own irrelevancy and demise. The neutered wannabe and ex-“journalists” have resorted to delivering more and more of the fake news that Trump has labeled and exposed…proof positive for us all to see. The dismantling of all the traditional structures of western society appears to be the goal of all young woke “progressives” increasingly calling the shots – but the inadvertent dismantling of the traditional media models may be the one they live to regret.

      The flight Trump took was back to Newark NY from Florida with Mark Epstein(Jeffrey’s brother) and a few others.
      Basically they gave him a lift. Iirc it was on Epsteins smaller plane. Not the Lolita Express.
      Trump withdrew his ‘nice guy’ comment when he helped Epsteins victims back in 2009 and had already banned Epstein from Mar a Lago some years previously.

  It is worse, the only trip that it can be established that Trump took on an aircraft owned by Epstein is in the 1990’s when he “hitched a ride” from Florida back to New York on a small twin engine plane, not the 727 notoriously known as the “Lolita Express” and not to any of Epstein’s properties.

See London had big power cuts because one of the major windfarms fell off. Just after they boasted about maximum wind generation. They are trying to muddy the waters by claiming two stations fell off, one conventional, but that GT station was on planned shutdown because the grid load was falling so its generation wasn’t needed.
It was all so predictable (think South Australia) and the unreliability is the shape of things to come.

        I’m happy to explain in my own words, but as I am not a Power/National Grid engineer, I suggest you read the links to try and figure out yourself what is useful information and what is spin.
        
        But in brief: Stephieboy has posted a link that basically says… we are not sure as to why 2 power stations (a gas-fired plant and an offshore wind-farm failed at approximately the same time).
        
        I provided a link that discusses the events that were occurring at the time that the 2 power plants failed.
        1. The Hornsea Offshore Windfarm had been running at maximum output a half-hr before the shut-down.
        Because of the terms of its contract, The gas-fired plant had lowered its output (In the UK 1st preference is given to renewable energy).
        
        2. A major storm was blowing up the coast…at the same time that Hornsea shut down.
        
        It took some time to bring Hornsea back on stream.
        
        A blackout occurred as other connections on the grid disconnect to ensure that they don’t carry too much load.
        
        So I referenced a link that discusses possible reasons for the failure….. stephieboy says they are making things up.

        As I mention down post, you talk shit and even the stuff you post is shit.
        In your “evidence” the paper says :

        Dispatch shows Little Barford was at 0MW at 16:55:37. This was as per dispatch instructions and they would have been ramping down for 15 minutes before this.
        Hornsea said they went to 0MW at 17:00:00 – this was posted 20 minutes after it happened – yeah right. They had a WTF moment and had to sort their shit out before they went to Dispatch.
        The underfrequency with the big load loss happened about 16:53 so the papers were wrong on those counts as well
        The more telling thing is Little Barfoot was back generating 25 minutes later. Hornslea had to stay out a lot longer and still seems to be on reduced output.
        Now go back to fiddling with goats where your talents are better served

        If you read the article I linked to.. you will see that it contains details about events occurring at or around the time of the blackout…. Details that weren’t available in the Newspaper articles.
        
        Now as far as I can see… no-one is stating that they know exactly what happened.
        
        But stephieboy is confident that they are making stuff up… until he identifies exactly what stuff is made up..I can’t help you any further.

  Regarding the GT station, doing the shutdown was in retrospect an operational misjudgment due to human or automation error. Power dispatching in UK is a very tricky issue – for example operators have to keep tabs on popular TV channels and ensure there is spare running generation in the run-up to ad breaks when people switch their kettles on. An underlying issue would be that they have a much smaller portion of hydro (including pumped storage) generation compared with NZ. Wind and solar generation needs to be supported by significant ‘spinning reserve’ and/or battery capacity. NZ is lucky as it has extensive hydro generation which complements and supports wind power at little cost.
  In UK providing appropriate ‘spinning reserve’ for wind farms would be very expensive. It would mean having to run near ‘end of life’ or other low capital cost plant at low output levels which is inefficient or expensive. Alternatively UK will have to bite the bullet and build ‘pumped storage’ schemes or install a vast amount of battery capacity.

    Peter, the GT was dispatched to 0MW because the load was dropping and wind has priority. Similar things happen here with thermal plant. There the windfarm lost 850MW. They had Dinorwig which is a massive pumped storage at 300MW, which came up to nearly 1GW after the drop. They have to be dispatched though.

      There is always a ‘slack’ generator where the prime energy (water, steam, etc) is controlled by system frequency. Its output is not dispatched but other output must be dispatched up or down if the ‘slack’ generator is near limits. Other generators are run to dispatched output but with field current adjusted to meet the target voltage by the production or absorption of ‘wattless’ current. If the GT was running on zero output then it had obviously been ‘dispatched’ as spinning reserve and is available for immediate dispatch if immediately. Seems that the need to dispatch was overlooked or there was a failure in the dispatch process. Could have been human error, dispatcher ‘overload’ or automation failures.
      I have not been in the game for a while but presumably with more automation and improved communications between power stations and grid control much of the dispatching can be automated.

        You can’t run a GT as spinning reserve. It has to have load on. – minimum load maybe 30% of rating. Too many problems maintaining the burner flames and blade cooling otherwise.
        In NZ, they run some hydros with tailrace depression as spinning reserve, but that now seems rare nowadays. More likely to be a hydro on frequency control or one of the thermal partially loaded. They sometimes don’t do that but have partially loaded units on short dispatch.

    Britain doesn’t have a lot of sites for pumped storage, and pumped storage is pretty inefficient as well though better than nothing. Batteries are (at present) a joke, there isn’t a faintly realistic chance that a battery installation could do anything to mitigate failures of this nature. Even the vaunted South Australian battery array is absolutely feeble though it has uses as a smoother of the poor quality feed that SA now has.
    
    Spinning reserve of course has the major problem that it generates significant GHG’s, and is expensive.
    
    Boris Johnston has the right approach but it is probably rather too late. He favours a significant investment in baseload nuclear, but that is probably a 20 year project at best.

        There is enough existing hydro capacity to support a significant increase in wind/ solar capacity but this is not limitless.
        A ‘climate emergency’ should require a re-assessment of hydro resources both for new projects and to enhance capacity of existing projects (eg raise Lake Manapouri). This would include prioritising sites in order of environmental significance and then sacrificing some of them in the interests of addressing the ‘climate emergency’. This would of course get an adverse reception.

      This shows the limited value of solar and wind power, since is needs very expensive storage capacity to support it. I am not sure that ‘off grid’ arrangements are really economic, they might be if the only other option is having to pay for several hundred metres or more of 11,ooovolt line and a transformer. I went to Great Barrier several years ago and the place was littered with discarded lead acid batteries from solar schemes.

    There are not rally many suitable sites in UK for pumped storage.
    
    A pumped storage scheme needs something akin to a cliff with an area for a lake at the top. They need a good hydraulic head (difference between top and bottom to work.
    
    For example, one I am slightly familiar with is the Drakensberg scheme in South Africa.

    The Drakensberg scheme has a head of 460 metres. It can go from standstill to almost full generation in a couple of minutes.
    
    UK is pretty flat. There are few opportunities for pumped storage. The biggest, I believe, is only 360MW – around half the output of a single coal generator. The Drakensberg scheme is 1000MW.
    
    Utilities do not like using GT because it is expensive. Diesel-fired GT can cost far more to produce than they sell the electricity for. In an ideologically driven country they get pinged for CO2 emissions.
    
    Moral of the story: If UK wants green leccy they must accept load shedding.

      A utility has to do its sums on this. If there is say 20% chance that lakes are low, or some other generation suddenly becomes unavailable, then a utility will need low capital cost last resort generation and GT meets this need. Running costs are rather immaterial in the circumstances except it will drive the spot price up for the periods in question. Huntly has effectively taken on this role after Genesis put pressure on the rest of the industry to ensure it was not going to be stiffed by the Electricity Authority again.
      Of cource you only run this last resort generation when you really need to.

While Joe Biden is in the lead in the polls to become the presidential nominee for the democrats he is struggling in the campaign. After being asked about, how many genders are there? He replies, three. Then he comes back and grabs the young questioners arm and gives more of an answer.

The young questioner is a republican so there is some bias in her approach. However Biden just can’t stop himself touching people in way that can be misinterpreted. He has the cover of the mainstream media because we know if a republican Trump affiliated person did this there would be howls of outrage.

But I’m finding it difficult to see Biden lasting through a long campaign. He makes a lot of gaffes as in this case.

To me the field is still wide open for someone to come through on the moderate “hope and change” lane to unify the people. Most of the rest of the current field is way too left wing to appeal to the moderate voter.

        When Countdown offers me a paper bag I tell them I cannot support cutting down trees and neither should they. They usually say nothing to that, but when they say paper can be recycled I reply that so can plastic – in fact several Countdown stores have a “park bench” for customers use which are made out of recycled Countdown plastic bags.
        
        Also agree with taking fruit & vege plastic bags for meat products and esp chicken, before putting them in my reusable bag that I apparently have to use every week for 107 years to offset the environmental cost of producing it.

  Depending on contractural terms, etc the subs belong to the liquidator and some could be deemed to belong to the subscribers. theBFD is honouring subs paid by existing subscribers which means it is taking a financial hit in this regard since theBFD has no basis to claim these residual subs from the liquidator.
  There was much discussion here concerning the ‘ownership’ of the Whaleoil subscription list and for that matter the Disqus list (note that the controlling login’s and associated passwords for the Disqus account is ‘property’).
  Ownership matters will be ‘tested’ in the coming weeks by Matt, Felix and the liquidator.
  As I mentioned earlier I was recently banned from commenting by theBFD. That banning was a arguably a criminal act on behalf of theBFD since its people unlawfully accessed a computer system (to wit the Disqus system) using a login that was not their property to ban me in the Disqus system. Only the liquidator or his/her assignee had the lawful authority to ban me in the relevant account in the Disqus system. I will let Felix know about this tomorrow.

An issue mentioned yesterday by some kiwiblog contributors –

If two-month-old baby girl Sapphire died with an alcohol level more than six times the legal blood alcohol limit for an adult driver, and the cross-over via breastfeeding is about 5 to 6 percent of the amount of alcohol in the mother’s bloodstream, would the mother’s alcohol level therefore be 20 times Sapphie’s 5% portion, so the baby being six times the legal limit, would suggest the mother’s level was 120 times the legal limit – if that is physically possible – or should the mother be dead too?

Or is that calculation wrong, are the cross-over via breastfeeding facts wrong, or there is some other explanation?

  There is something here that does not make sense. I know that Babies contract HIV from breastmilk, but this is the first time a baby has supposedly died of alcohol poisoning from breast milk that I have seen reported. With the way some ferrel scum drink, there should be lot more dead babies.

  The baby may have been fed alcohol directly. Blood levels in mum approximate milk levels. Meaning of the TOTAL dose ingested by Mum, 5-6% gets to baby. However, alcohol metabolism in neonates in 50% or less than that of adults, so toxic accumulation in the neonate is also likely.

    If the baby was fed alcohol directly some hours before its death, alcohol would not be in stomach contents… but would have already entered bloodstream and the excess not yet metabolised was appearing in organ tissues (heart and liver ).

      here are some back of the envelope calculations:
      
      If the mother was drinking RTD bourbon and coke at 7% alcohol thats 7% X 250 mL = 17.5 ml alcohol per drink. Using the conversion 1 g = 1 ml (which is water, alcohol is actually slightly lighter, as its organic but I will use this conversion to be conservative) that would be 17.5 g alcohol per drink.
      
      17.5 X 18 drinks = 315 g (mL) alcohol.
      
      315 * 6% (0.06) = 18.6 g (mL) alcohol.
      
      Now, its not that simple because the minute one starts to ingest, one also starts to eliminate (that’s what peeing a pooing is). Also, those grams of alcohol will be ingested, and distributed round the body diluting the absolute concentration (biodistribution) and then again by elimination.
      
      Here’s where it gets really problematic … the enzymes that biotranform and eliminate alcohol in the human body (alcohol dehydrogenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase and CYP2e1) are primarily int he liver and lesser so in the kidney and they are low capacity, even in adults… so they saturate quickly and then instead of first order elimination (i.e. the alcohol is removed proportionate to dose), then zero orders elimination occurs (i.e. alcohol is removed at a constant rate, that may be far less than the ingested dose) … from your biochemistry days first order is Michaelis-Menten Kinetics, Zero Order is exponential/non-linear kinetics.
      
      The little one, with only 50% or less of adult enzymes, will hit zero order exponentially faster (not an accident of words) than the mum. And so…
      
      Hope than answers your Q.

Don’t mention the rugby. The AB’s pack didn’t front up against the boks, at least in the first half and continued to struggle with the rushing defence in the 2nd. The Aussies played out of their skins last night and were close to bullying the AB pack. Next week will be a beauty. No excuses but thinking about the send off, if you put a right shoulder into an opponent your left arm does not move. Need to slow down the video but I think Barrett may have slipped as the player came forward against him and to Barrett’s left, but clearly in the video last night Barrett’s left arm was coming up in commitment to a tackle, not a shoulder charge where only the shoulder connecting with the player is driven forward. Come on Tony tell me I am wrong.
Our attack looked a notch or 2 better with the 1st five fullback changes settling, bit of a worry over the midfield injuries but the stand in centre proved once again why he is an All Black. Dane Coles looks back to his best, but that pack has to lift and leave the stupid penalties out. Although we didn’t seen Ensor last night, he, Bridges and the new Fijian winger are top wild cards on attack and shag will no doubt develop that.

  I am always nervous with French referees. I don’t think the excitable Latin temperament is always conducive to sound decision-making, and it worries me a little that the All Blacks’ first three matches at RWC 2019 will have Frenchmen on the whistle.
  
  Coles was my All Black player of the match, with Read, ALB and Savea also having massive games, although Savea blotted his copybook with the stupid push on Hooper late in the first half. We really missed Retallick last night, and I don’t quite know how the All Blacks will cover his absence this week. The other big concern is the lack of form of Reiko Ioane, and I would be tempted to play Ennor and Reese next weekend on the wings, Smith back to #15, and Barrett starting at #10.

Note that Ioane was looking for work and the backline is not settled yet. That’s the big question for the week, will the backs revert or will shag keep to his plan – hard to answer because he’s the boss and he doesn’t panic. We didn’t win up front and you can’t water that down, and we have to this week whoever is playing. “The racist abuse of police at Ihumatao has been disgraceful. Having interfered a couple weeks back, the PM needs to show leadership, back our Police & tell protestors to go home so some houses can get built.”

Electoral implications.
Those who support Ihumatao Nimbys likely to be Labour or Green voters anyway. If Ardern supports Fletchers and Iwi then some of these voters may swing to Greens (as they back protesters). Marginal Labour seat MPs and those low on list may be concerned, although voters will still be left-voting. Bear in mind that the number of voters concerned enough to swap parties on this issue are quite small I would imagine. Other voters, with no skin in game, will ignore Ihumatao as to deciding who to vote for (status quo situation to them).

If Ardern backs, or is perceived to back, protestors then she will lose some votes to Greens (as she was late to party), but not as many as above. However, she may lose a lot more voters to ACT, Nats and NZF as these voters may be concerned about (their) private land rights being possibly infringed, as well as wasting $36m on non-usable land (instead of, say, cancer drugs). In addition, businesses will be less inclined to buy and develop land as risk of another Ihumatao, i.e. jobs may be affected, housing delayed. NZF and ACT will be playing these concerns up.

By this reasoning, Ardern needs to back Fletchers and rule of law, and now it looks like Bridges forced her to do it.

Below is a message from the weekly newsletter of the principal of our son’s school.

The school is Martin’s Rodney area.

Most of you will know that I am not a politically focused principal. I wear my heart on my sleeve and work relentlessly to ensure that our students have the quality teaching that they deserve. A lot of hard work as a team has been done to ensure that we have quality teachers, quality environments, and currently I am working with the Ministry to ensure that we also have quality Learning Spaces.

I was saddened and angered this week at the announcement from Tracey Martin regarding the new “Learning Support Coordinators” that have been rolled out to select schools. Yes, as you can guess, we are not one of the schools who were allocated any resource towards supporting our precious students.

The Learning Support Coordinators are, in my opinion, a political spin to look good in the face of the voters, but the reality is that the introduction of these positions will have little to no effect for our students – even if we had been lucky enough to get one. The learning support coordinators are an extra layer of bureaucracy that cost this government $216 million over 4 years. They will be hands-off people that shuffle bits of paper and “upskill” our teachers.

We, as a teaching profession, have been crying out for more resourcing at ground level to support our students better. The reality is that this sum of money could have given each school in New Zealand a full time Learning Support Assistant (TA) for the 4 year period. We do not need more upper level workers, we need hands in our classrooms.

Our school Board recognises the importance of contact time, and allocates a significant part of the budget – supported by you and the rest of our community – to support our students, both neurotypical and neuro diverse. This funding however is still not enough, and we spend hours searching and fighting for more funding for our students of need. I often am faced with the statement – “You really are a fierce advocate for your students”, well, yes, I am and we can collectively see the benefits of that. We have happy, engaged, students who are learning new and exciting things.

I had a meeting with the Ministry last week, and the person I had the meeting with told me that the Ministry had yet again cut the hours they would fund to support some of our students. The total funding they are currently supplying is 12 hours a week for 3 students, so in essence 45 minutes of support per student per day. Their suggestion was gobsmacking – if I was unable to provide adequate “babysitting” to ensure the students were safe, I should (a) pool the funding and allocate it to the single most needy, and (b) get our senior students to look after the highest need during class time, because at least with 12 hours I had all of morning tea and lunch covered. Needless to say, the fierce advocate came out and we have been allocated a meagre 25 hours more.

So, I guess, why I am rabbiting on today is really to say this – your kids are in good hands, our teachers are awesome, our Learning Support Assistants are amazing, and everyone is working tirelessly to ensure our students have good educational outcomes. I am disillusioned about the promises that we are made regarding our schools, and endlessly gobsmacked by the ability of the media and government to pull the wool over the eyes of everyday kiwis.
