  According to my energy bill, this is the warmest winter to date. Our last months power bill was $380, last years for the same month was up around $650 (dear architect:underfloor heating is NOT efficient!).
  
  Last night, I used the air-conditioning in our movie room as the heat from the projector over heated the room.

    Yes will be interesting to see the data for July. We have had no brutal cold snaps and the one on the way is pretty moderate.
    
    I recently moved into a new townhouse. Top insulation and double glazing and a heat pump. My power bill is about $5 per day.

      Hi Dad I have bought the family over to celebrate my birthday with you. It only took a RNZAF Jet, Helicopter and and a Frigate. Shame most of the Tokelau people are living in NZ and there only just over a 1000 people to great me. Well must get back to NZ and tell everyone that they must get rid of their petrol cars haha

    Electric underfloor heating is effecive but not efficient although nigh rate power helps. Hot water underfloor heating powered by a heat pump is efficient – Day rate say 30c heat pump delivers 4-1 so effective price is 7.5c and night rate at 12c effective 3c and the concrete floor acts as storage battery.

        Terrible economics. Diesel costs about $0.16 per kWh of heat at the moment. But diesel heaters are at best about 90% efficient. Call it $0.018/kWh for heating. Barely beats electric resistance heating.
        
        Heat pumps will do about 1/3 to 1/5 of electricity cost, so between about $0.04 and $0.1/kWh depending on what you pay and how cold it is.
        
        Natural gas is good too, about $0.07/kWh if you have it reticulated to your home.
        
        Propane is even more expensive than diesel.

Apparently the cost of answering a Parliamentary Written Question is $100. According to Minister Tracey Martin. Ms Collins has asked in WQ 28126 how this was calculated. Specifically the exact mathematical equation. (Good luck with that.)

    Too true. I recall a minister (Bradford?) trying this in the 1990s.
    Of course it takes resources to answer PQs, OIAs, letters to ministers, etc. But any cost per item can only be notional and the underlying, insulting, message is “your questions are not worth answering”.

A judge says he expects a public backlash after releasing a violent offender on intensive supervision for trying to kidnap a woman who was jogging in the street.

“No doubt there will be letters to the editor demanding my resignation,” Christchurch District Court Judge Raoul Neave said at Tuesday’s sentencing. “It won’t be the first time and it won’t be the last.”

  So the judge’s options were to had out a sentence and watch him walk free with no monitoring or what he handed down.

    Christchurch justice is so nutty that citizens would be far safer if they could legally carry pistols.
    
    The Geros hand-tap comes after a Muslim teenager was sentenced to supervision – which led to golf lessons – after he was caught in advanced in planning for a knife and car massacre of Christchurch citizens in February last year.
    
    That was a similar sentence to that imposed today on a man (I think Maori) who, wearing a Trump t-shirt yelled offensive anti-Muslim messages outside a Christchurch mosque a month after the shootings.
    
    The judge said in sentencing the yeller today that he was confident the “Muslim community will accept a supervision sentence imposed on a man with psychological issues.”

  Robertson, that is B******t. It is because she is absent from the house on a regular basis. Is more keen on glib media appearances than front footing issues as the Prime Minister. And for the benefit of the Labour troll, Robertson, Labour spinmeisters and Corrin Dann – what Bridges accused Jacinda of being, she has been since she took office, it pre-dates her pregnancy and the birth of Neve, so it is not new. You just have to read KB to see how many times this exact point has been made.

      She works part time and we are flexible as she is a great person and a very competent woman.
      
      I think ardern has probably never worked full time her whole life and is literally incapable of sustained effort.

The problem is that these directives will cost money. Hospitals generally use fleets of small cars to run around town to collect blood samples etc. Switching to electric vehicles will not be cost effective (otherwise they would do it without being told). That will mean less money for other things, like elective surgeries.

  No Robbo, apart from your self-projection and BS, Simon Bridges has a valid point which is Parliament just had a 3 week recess and Jacinda then takes off overseas.
  
  And Robbo is wrong yet again, there is absolutely no need for the Prime Minister to be visiting Tokelau at this point in time for a one-off visit when there are more pressing issues at home (and Jacinda already visited a number of Pacific Islands earlier in the year).
  
  The fact that she skipped most of the other Islands suggest this was not major trip, in fact Jacinda didn’t need to go, the trip could have been handled by the Deputy Labour Leader (Kelvin Davis) or the Deputy PM/Foreign Minister Winston Peters.
  
  Talking about Kelvin Davis, isn’t it interesting that he never gets to represent NZ at anything! Isn’t it also interesting that he generally never is in charge when Jacinda and Winston are away … for some reason the Finance and Sport Minister Grant Robertson is always in charge.
  
  Why is that, are Labour “racist” for never allowing Kelvin Davis to be in charge? Or is Robbo simply enforcing his “white privilege” over the “token Maori” Labour Deputy Leader? Not a good look Robbo and Labour!

On Monday, I was blessed by two letters from the IRD (oh bloody hell thinks me). Anyhow some of you may be aware the IRD are now doing end of year assessments on all PAYE taxpayers, and in my case they have written to me 3 times.

Anyhow my assessment came on Monday, and what a glorious surprise, I am getting a refund of $1.86. Letter no 2 received on Monday confirmed my refund and then asked me to complete a form so they could deposit the refund into a bank account. Speaking with colleagues I am not alone, with refunds ranging from $0.85 up to mine of $1.86.

Now to say I’m not grateful for a refund would be wrong, but WTF? Do these people not care how they spend taxpayers money? The amount of effort and cost for me to collect $1.86 is ridiculous. Why do they not save the taxpayers some money and put all refunds under $50 against a person’s future year’s account and cancel collecting all amounts owing under $50.

I have no idea how many taxpayers would have received such letters recently, but the administrative cost in this exercise must dwarf the amounts being collected and refunded.

  I have all my business with IRD online, so my refund was calculated and the $1.80 or so paid with no fuss.
  IRD’s services have got steadily better. Whether that’s a good return for the $2 billion spend on new systems, I can’t say.

  In my case the IRD wrote to me a couple of weeks after I lodged my return reminding me that it was due on the 8th (it was given to them on the 5th), followed up by another letter five days later confirming that I was getting a refund. Yesterday Mrs T got her reminder letter, which means that her refund should be through in a few days. How much is IRD wasting by these letters when if they kept better records they would know they had received the returns in good time.

  It’s not all refunds. IRD have gone a little enthusiastic with tapayer communications. A new system is also dragging up amounts they claim are payable too for very distant past years –possibly statute barred.
  
  Assessments and client accounting have previously been separate. The new “bills” are suggesting hunger as provisional tax is being included in the amount payable, as if immediately, and scaring clients.
  
  Everything is also being at least charged interest if the computer determines the allocated payment and date is a whisker late.
  
  This officiousness may be badly visited on the COL. It has happened previously.

    IRD were more circumspect previously. I suspect computer programmers have been a bit literal in implementing the new system.
    
    Now, for example, the system is remembering small amounts that were previously written off. Those that hadn’t got to that internal processing stage before the changeover are now being deducted or included.
    
    Amateur govt. again. The Minister had power to enable a blanket writeoff for the prior small leftovers. It could have been slipped in the annual tax Bill if considered necessary.
    
    An IRD that annoys taxpayers causes annoyance to the present govt.

It’s all very well declaring Climate Change emergencies (what a woke this to do), but what is the rational response to potential climate change?

1. Will our attempts to change the climate yield results? Are they defined and measurable?
2. What is the cost of trying to change the climate?
3. What is the cost of mitigating climate change effects?

Prevention vs mitigation?

If we attempt prevention and it fails, will we still have the resources to mitigate?

It would appear to me that there are huge unknowns as regards prevention, and the money would be better spent on preparing for mitigation.

Using the money today to make the most vulnerable less vulnerable tomorrow.

Making energy choices today that are actually going to work under a variety of climate changed conditions.

In the 1970’s Jerry Pournelle wrote a collection of essays addressing the perceived problems of the age which included famine, pollution, and energy.
He proposed that the vast majority of our problems can be addressed by securing energy supply (remember these were written when Oil supply was an issue). He called his approach “Survival with Style”. (Essays were collected as https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2362018.A_Step_Farther_Out)

The premise is simple, humanity should survive without throwing away our lifestyles and the way to do it is with energy.

Cheap reliable energy can provide heat in the artic, water in the desert, it can clean up pollution and provide transport, housing, heating and entertainment. Cheap energy leads to better lifestyles and healthier outcomes.

So lets be rational about power.

Cheaper reliable power facilitates better economic and social outcomes.

Cheap power needs to be balanced against the cost of mitigating pollution costs.

Trying to go straight to enforcing lower birth rates on poor people while it remains the case that a large family is their only hope of support in their old age isn’t going to work.

3. In addition the company has agreed to build 40 homes for the legal owners.

4. There is a chronic housing shortage amognst the prote

I say all non Maori owned land is now at risk of occupation and appropriation.
Unless the Government moves the protesters on using whatever means necessary the non Maori citizens cannot be guaranteed full title to their legal property.

Fletchers have done a deal with the original iwi owners to massage their hurty feelings even though they accepted a “settlement” some years ago. Last week i was notified that my Twitter account had been suspended due to a complaint about a tweet i’d made. Unbelievable!!
All i’d done was send a tweet and a pic about the gay ‘Fisting Festival’ (KiwiFist) that ATEED had sponsored using ratepayrs money last year. Twitter investigated and found i had not violated any rules and immediately unsuspended my account. Obviously I must of upset some loser that follows me 🙁

Having set the precedent with Ihumatao in stating no building will take place until the issue raised by protestors is resolved, why does Ardern not proclaim a halt to City Rail Link construction – in the interests of those now, and next in line, for disruption of their livelihoods – until the issue is resolved?

(And I believe she would be acting more legitimately to halt City Rail Link than Fletchers at Ihumatao)

School principals want to use our kids as activists to protest for better principal pay with a wear green to school day. This is so wrong! They are in a position of authority over the kids and parents while they are at school, so which kids are not going to be seen to support better pay for the principal?. If they want kids and parents to support their protest it must be freely given support and done outside of school hours. EG. Wear green on Saturday to support teachers pay.

His tweets to Cummings did not mention race at all. And when CNN brings up a twerp (Victor Blackwell) who says referring to rat infestation is somehow a racial slur, *who is the real racist*?

Trump’s plan is clear: make the Dems look like absolute idiots for calling ‘waaaaycist’ even when Trump simply states facts that have nothing do to with race. Baltimore and similar declining cities have been run by Libs for decades and Trump asks where all the money has gone. Clearly not into cleaning the places up.

And he has placed AOC and other extreme Dem socialists in the limelight. The Dems will lose moderate voters though this strategy.

    Part of the problem here in NZ is that CNN is still held out to be the font of all knowledge about the US. Not helped by it being the only US new channel available via Freeview. The hatred CNN, NSMBC and to an extent ABC have towards Trump is legend. Most of the print media also has an openly negative bias.
    It is astonishing how well many Kiwis profess to know what is going on in the US and how they claim to know that Trump is ‘bad’. I bet their opinions come from CNN etc as repeated unquestioning by our media. Yes, the man may have flaws – but who doesn’t.   Put on the AC, the mileage drops away significantly. Hours to “refuel”, means they’re limited to being town cars. When they run out of juice, you have to put them on a truck as you can’t even tow them. Not cheap to charge from home. Let’s not get started on the cost of replacing batteries.
  
  Talk to the rental agencies who lease out these all-electric cars. Some interesting stories about how the hype doesn’t match the reality.

  Yeah coroners frequently make stupid assertions like this without consideration of the bad consequences of their recommendations.
  
  Number of younger kids who walk or bike to school = 10’s of thousands, number who die each year as a result is probably (mostly) zero. If every kid had to be chaperoned by an adult then the net cost to the country in worsened traffic (and more traffic accidents) and another hour or two of unproductive time for the adults is probably $10’s to 100’s of millions per year. Then there is the educational and health benefits of kids getting more exercise, and learning to be more sensible and responsible at a younger age (not infantalising them as much), and likely a lot more besides.
  
  This was bad luck, the universe is shit like that and the coroner is just making a prick of himself.

  Yes the earth is warming, but relatively slowly (land at .012-.013°C per year in last 40 years, global ocean at tiny .0015°C per year), with minimal extra cost or danger to >99% of worlds population, and in fact huge benefit to those in higher latitudes and those surviving due to increased agricultural output created by higher CO2. The slow global sea level rise of 1-2mm/yr affects a tiny proportion, and can be adapted to over the many decades of time that it takes for it to have any significant cumulative effect.
  
  Meanwhile technology development means that we are starting economic transition to PV battery for most of our energy needs – which will quickly reduce fossil fuel use over next 2-3 decades. Gonna need to find a new scare

Maori seem out to block Whhhhanganui refugee resettlement.

The city was chosen as a settlement destination in February and Radio NZ reports it could expect 30 refugees in 2020 and about 150 every year thereafter.

But local Maori leader Ken Mair says Immigration NZ and the district council failed to consult properly with Maori.

      I got taught a lesson in the 1980s as a young buck.
      
      I was in a conversation with a farmer I knew well in Wainuioru and we were talking about his family’s history farming in the Te Wharau area, east of Gladstone – as they had done since the late 1800s.
      
      I thought I was being all culturally sensitive and cool pronouncing it with an ‘F’ as in Te Farau and did so a few times.
      
      Long story short, he finally asked me what I was doing, and did I know that the locals pronounced it with a ‘W’, no ‘F’ involved.
      
      Funnily enough we were in the Gladstone pub not long after and yarning with one of the local elders (Wi someone, forget his last name) and sure enough there was no ‘F’ sound.
      
      I guess it’s the spelling that doesn’t help. If it was spelt Te Warau, less people would get it wrong.

        While ago I watched a doco on James K Baxter and his commune, it was interesting to hear how the local Maori pronounced Wanganui back then in the 60s and 70s. Not a Wh is to be heard.
        Tho` growing up in Whenuapai in the early 60s, it was always pronounced Fehnuapai by honkey and maori alike. ?

      I’ve listened to the Tariana Turia pronunciation as linked to by Maggy Wassilieff in her 3.16 post.
      
      I’ve repeated it, and slowed it down, and the sound contains a “lightly aspirated H” as described by Maggy. However, this seems to come before the “W” sound.
      
      So perhaps the river and city should be called Hwanganui to comply with traditional North Island West Coast Maori pronunciation.

        but I’ve heard her pronounce Whanganui with an even lighter aspiration.
        
        (I’m W(h)anganui born & bred and never heard pronunciations such as Fonganui/kofai/fanau/fare

NEW ZEALAND: The bursting housing bubble …

New Zealand’s serious long – term ( and politically can – kicked ) housing multiple stretch problem is coming to an end.

By definition, all bubbles are unsustainable.
