Just over twenty years ago the mainstream media starting embedding the environmental catastrophe narrative into the public conscience . And it was exactly twenty years ago today that George Monbiot, one of their leading ~~voices~~ shills, started his Guardian article thus:

Global warming means that flying across the Atlantic is now as unacceptable as child abuse

The global meltdown has begun. Long predicted and long denied, the effects of climate change are arriving faster than even the gloomiest prophets expected.

This week we learnt that the Arctic ecosystem is collapsing. The ice is melting, wiping out the feeding grounds of whales and walruses. Polar bear and seal populations appear to have halved. Three weeks ago, marine biologists reported that almost all the world’s coral reefs could be dead by the end of the coming century. Last year scientists found that between 70 and 90 per cent of the reefs they surveyed in the Indian Ocean had already expired, largely as a result of increasing water temperatures.

One month ago, the Red Cross reported that natural disasters uprooted more people in 1998 than all the wars and conflicts on earth combined. Climate change, it warned, is about to precipitate a series of “super-disasters”, a “new scale of catastrophe”. The demographer Dr Norman Myers calculates
that 25 million people have already been displaced by environmental change, and this will rise to 200 million within 50 years. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine reports that nine of the ten most dangerous diseases carried by insects and other vectors are likely to spread as a result of global warming. The British Government’s chief scientist has warned that climate change could cause the Gulf Stream to grind to a halt.

Climate change is perhaps the gravest calamity our species has ever encountered. Its impact dwarfs that of any war, any plague, any famine we have confronted so far. It makes genocide and ethnic cleansing look like sideshows at the circus of human suffering. A car is now more dangerous than a gun.

The US Vice-President Al Gore, once a robust advocate of drastic action, has been laughed and bullied into servile ineptitude. [kk: I laughed out loud at that one]

In the twenty years since, every single one of his claims has been
proved wrong ❌.
✔ Polar bear and walrus populations have increased.
✔ Arctic sea ice has remained stable since 2007.
✔ Coral reefs have not disappeared from the Indian Ocean.
✔ Super disasters have not occurred.
✔ Hundreds of millions have not been displaced.
✔ Tropical diseases are not spreading because of global warming.
✔ The Gulf Stream has not ground to a halt.

As laughable as this is, it’s actually very sinister. A whole generation has grown up in a state of fear for their existence, fear whipped up by nothing more than lies, extremist fabrication, and outright deceit. The origins of Global Warming alarmism can be linked directly to the UNs multidecade program to assume the role of an unelected global government. That is worthy of our fear, and of our unrelenting resistance.

Sadly few politicians stand up to this nonsense, being either inept and wimpy, of themselves longing for ascension to that altogether more luxurious trough that is the UN. New need a new breed of political leader, because the current lot – of any colour save perhaps ACT – are driving us towards increased servitude. To them first, and a global government in waiting second.

    Monster cruise ships will be able to berth in Auckland if plans by authorities get the go-ahead.
    
    A resource consent for a mooring structure at the end of Queen’s Wharf is due to be lodged later this month.
    
    The “mooring dolphin” is sunk into the sea floor off the end of a wharf. It provides another mooring point for long ships without spending much more money on extending a wharf.
    
    Auckland Council organisations Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Panuku Development Auckland, Auckland Transport and Ports of Auckland are involved in the plan.

  We have also been warned at one time that ‘papists’ were angling for world domination; then rampant Communism, the spectre of which is still used to try and scare the shit out of people.
  A lot of the people that claim global warming is a Marxist hoax warn us with their next breathe that within a short time NZ will be labouring under Sharia Law & there’ll be stonings of rape victims or whatever . . . . .

  As a politician with executive reponsibilities to stick your head in the sand and act on UN reports without critique is a breach of duty to the electors.
  
  The UNIPCC plainly stated in it’s Third Asseement Report that a chaotic system like weather was not possible to forecast. Their subsequent “models” have proven severly faulty compared to actual observations. One third of the “data” points on their enormous grid is itself computed. They have failed to explain why there has been no observable measurable warming over the past 20+ years. The Sun is ignored despite indirectly producing clouds, themselves ignored and now the sun has gone into a minimum-none sunspot phase. Previously that was seen when there was ice skating on the Thames.
  
  Calls for expensive drastic remedies have to be backed up. The greater the cost of action the higher the quality of evidential justication needed. When the Hadley Research station, the UK’s premier weather people emailed friends that data would have to be changed as they couldn’t find global warming alarm bells ahould have wrung.
  Engineers dont’t act on such flimsy design evidence. They expect when they do the maths that their structures are fit for purpose and not some thing from Dr Seuss.
  
  Sure we have weather, we always will have and flooding will occur in a sesonal storm. Those on the coast may have to deal with tidal surges. Some tropical islands no higher than a tall fence may have the sea regularly pass over them with the tides. This is not abnormal: adaptation is required. What is abormal is to propose a universal fix–kill off the world’s number one source of energy and all will be magiclly well. Meanwhile the Carbon Credit Traders will game with their new tax.
  
  Care is neeed lest the “forecasts” be wrong. Should it turn cold unexpectedly food and warmth may be scarce. Engineers do not design to that level of risk. They reject solutions that have a high downside cost with even low probability. They also reject solutions where the computations are not proveable or the solution is not computable.
  
  Time out on the collective climate madness is required. Cui bono?

    I don’t find the millenialist catastrophist claims at all credible, but there has certainly been warming of the world in the last 20 years. Argo buoy network is high accuracy and shows about 0.003°C per year warming of 0-2000m ocean (about hlaf of total volume) per year over 15 years that it has been active, and satellite temperatures (UAH, RSS) both show about .013°C per year warming over last 40 years, a trend that hasn’t stopped: http://www.woodfortrees.org/plot/uah6/plot/rss
    
    Pretending there is no warming is not a sensible or defensible stance. It is the claims regarding attribution and predicted acceleration both of temperature and sea level rise that are where the true scientific battle needs to be fought.

      And there will be cooling. Analysis of the last 100 years show warming periods followed by cooling. This is not unusual nor dramatic. And CO2 is not the driver of these changes.

        Yes the ~60 year period Pacific Decadal Oscillation does overwhelm any underlying change, but previous peak was in 1940’s and we are now 80 years beyond that so where there was previously a decline from 1940’s-1970’s we are seeing a rise so far in 2000-2020 period suggestive (but not definitively so) of an increased underlying warming trend.
        
        However the rate of warming is not a problem – for NZ it is about 0.8°C per century, equivalent to moving 100km north or 130m lower altitude. Either of which would be considered a pleasant change by almost everyone. Asn sea level rise is a nothing as well – about 1-2mm per year for last 100 years.

      There is a difference between weather and climate.
      
      From my recall of the definition of “climate”, you need at least 30 years of data to say what the climate is. Anything less than that is “changes in the weather”.
      
      Thus you need at least approx 60 years (ie two “climate periods”) of data gathered the same way to say there has been a “climate change”.
      
      If we are going to try to sound scientific by refering to Argos and satellites, we need to wait until we have 60 or so years.
      
      That is the problem with all sensors. They can only show you what’s there now. They don’t give all the history.
      
      On top of that, it has to be a like-for-like measurement. Many sensors on the land have been moved or their surrounds have changed.
      
      For example historically many sensors have been located at airports (temperature etc are needed to calculate max take-off weight etc). However in the last 50 years airports have changed from grass runways to many acres of concrete and asphalt with air-conditioners blasting out extra heat.
      
      Anything based on those measurements is not really “science”.

      The Argos Buoys are accurate. The problem is there’s not many of them.
      They’ve got 3800 of them covering 361,000,000 sq kms of Ocean. There’s no way they can provide adequate coverage for measurement.
      Yet on those pretty Graphs ALL of the Ocean is coloured in.
      The other thing is they are only scratching the surface in understanding the cycles of Ocean currents and how cold and hot water is moved around.

Here is a article from Phil Smith Editor of the House on Simon Bridges repeat questions in Question Time in Parliament but it turns out it’s more about Jacindas work ethic and ability to answer them. “The jab and duck” Jacinda is good at answering questions her response can turn defence into offence, a strong reason for this is strong preperation.

  I think you’ll find that Savage, Fraser & Nash and probably a lot of the other early PMs were away from parliament a lot more than Ardern.
  Back in those days they could be out of the country for months at a time; a lot of it spent relaxing on ocean liners.
  M J Savage was badly ill for years before he died in office, which probably effected his attendance.

    It is a bit creepy to have a politician’s photo hanging in your house. It is a very cult-like thing to do. People do that for leaders like Hitler, Stalin and Castro. If you go to a country and there are pictures of the leader hanging everywhere then you probably want to get out as fast as possible.

  BREAKING NEWS: NZ PM aka the “Princess” emergency visit to Tokelau, during a visit to the beach early this morning by the PM she used the official climate change ruler to measure how high the water was.. six hour later the wondrous PM went back to the same beach just to double check her figures and the water measured WAY higher than earlier.. the PM has issued a climate emergency on Tokelau’s behalf and stated that due to her scientific and very accurate measuring the island would be completely submerged with in 30 days!..     The good news, is the Tax revenue raised can be given to people to do research that proves that raising taxes and giving that money to to researchers is indisputable evidence of climate change.

    As overseas and local investors (really just speculators) are fleeing in droves, I’m amazed with the numbers of first home buyers in particular coming in to the housing market … mainly the new housing market, with little interest in the speculators tired old rubbish.

Starting to see what National are putting together for its next term as government.

One thing that impressed me under the last National government was a line by line examination of budgets along with the data driven social investment approach. Because the focus was towards outcomes rather inputs, some initiatives were quietly scaled back or dropped. OK sometimes noisily. Some of these were in the broad health sector – people forget that a lot of health and social support related funding goes to third parties. Non performing contracts were dropped or reduced.

OTOH some initiatives and outcome measures were introduced or planned – young parent payment, charter schools, removing school decile ratings in favour of targeted funding….

Thing is, it is much easier to start up something than it is to drop it. We see with the current government that vote catching regularly trumps outcomes. In order to drop something, data and evaluation is needed. Entrenched expectations, staffing, contracts and infrastructure need to be managed out.

I hope National is looking at Labour policies it would cancel. Unfortunately some will be hard to opt out of. For example – years of Kiwibuild forward contracts, a huge and growing social housing list. Others have long ranging effects on our stability as an investment destination, such as oil and gas and Maori activism.

After the previous Labour government, National were stuck with some very expensive policies, and I think we can be sure that is the current government’s intention as well. There was some tweaking by National – for example Working for Families taking trust income into account, student allowances applying some age restrictions. But minor.

Interested to hear what others think should or could be cancelled.

One hopes Pita Turei explains all this and more to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern before she makes any more “captain’s calls” and ends up with her legacy being the total re-litigation of nearly all Treaty Settlements.
It’s not that silly that it couldn’t happen.

But Professor of Māori studies Margaret Mutu – a veteran of the Bastion Point protest in the 1970s – said solving the land dispute at Ihumātao was actually quite simple.
“You just need to get sensible. This is a wāhi tapu for heavens sake. If you violate this wāhi tapu, particularly by building on it, people will get hurt. And that’s what mana whenua understand,” Ms Mutu said.

So let protest leader Pania Newton and iwi advocate Pita Turei each explain what land exactly has been wheat fields and each relate that to land Fletcher own and do intend to build on.

  It’s not according to the Iwi’s leadership. The tape on the land is out of respect to the past elders who sought the return of the confiscated land.
  
  But even better in this mess is:
  1. Fletchers bought the land from the iwi for the devlopment;
  2. The protesters and Hone (John) Harawera want the crown to do a land deal with Fletchers to give up the land for a land swap (at taxpayer expense). So, the land parcel will be returned to the Iwi.
  
  Harawera says, he doesn’t want this to be an example of unpacking ToW settlements.
  
  Well,
  1. He can get the Fu*k out of this dispute, as it has nothing to do with him and the rest of the rent a mob.
  2. The Rent a mob Professor should be told to p**s off, because her grasp of facts are not what they should be. Which brings in to question her academic knowledge, but I could imagine she has the level of understanding of Rangi Walker and Claudia Orange (late 20th Century historical revisionists).
  3. Sofia, you are correct about the Greens, but it is not only the Greens, it is every other tin pot lay about and member of rent a mob.
  4. When is someone in the media and the leadership going to say, there is nothing in this situation and enough is enough?
  
  This situation needs the CoL to show leadership, but will they?
  
  This situation need Maori to sort out what they want and who speaks for them. They got a treaty settlement, they are going to get housing, but that seems not to be good enough.
  
  Finally if the media ignored this group of prats, this situation would resolve itself.

      Yes, I do, but his given name is John. I saw the stoush from TVNZ’s Marae programme played on the news. Harawera has not changed his name by deed poll, he has Maorised his name for his purposes. This is much in the same way as Muldoon use to call out Tipene O’Reagan as Stephen.
      
      On the matter of insults, do you not think it is insulting to me and my family, to be expected as taxpayers to have to continue to support Harawera and his rent a mob who are playing politics with a post Treaty settlement at taxpayer expense for their benefit?

        ‘Mum gave us Māori names, but none of our Māori mates had Māori names. They were all Greg, Jill, Mark, John, Mary, Sandra — those sort of names. And here’s Kahi Takimoana, Hinewhare Turikatuku Ruiha, Hone Pani Tāmati Wāka Nene, and Tari Tapua. That was a political statement in itself. I found out later that my Māori mates had Māori names, but it was their middle name, and their parents made them all use their Pākehā names.
        
        I remember asking Mum about that once: “Mum, how come all my mates have got Pākehā names but I’ve got a Māori name?” She said to me: “Son, it’s because they’re not quite sure who they are yet.” It was a lovely way of saying it. But I’ll always remember that. I must’ve been only about nine or 10.’

      I am not making birther comments, but it must be noted that, it is Harawira himself who is denying his Pakeha lineage and has made other comments about Pakehas.
      
      I am not setting myself up as a judge on Mairi matters. But I have a real problem when:
      
      1. Some girl within an iwi is feeling disposed, her and her friends have lost in the Maori Land Courts, they have lost at the UN, but through the use of social and traditional media they make such a noise they get traction for their cause;
      2. With the help of rent a mob lay abouts from all over the country these same group of nobodies have suddenly managed to create a modern day Bastion Point in Mangere.
      3. Then you get one of those (Harawira) who are using events to recruit followers, going on RNZ National this morning telling listeners what he thinks should happen (in short the crown should do a deal with Fletchers, if Fletchers give up the land).
      
      Now who the hell does Harawira think he is? This is not his dispute, he is not of the iwi and he has no connection to the land in question. Yet he is asking the Crown to shell out to do a deal with Fletchers.
      
      As for the issue with the names, it was Harawira himself who made the issue of English versus Maorisation of names yesterday after a heated debate on TVNZ’s marae programme. It was Harawira who admitted his given name was John, but it is insulting not to call him Hone.
      
      As far as I am concerned, there are other names for Harawira and none of them are polite.

  Muslim leaders have come to pray with the people of Ihumātao, sharing the pain of having their sacred spaces attacked.

[kaikorero (speaker) Terata Hikairo said during the pōwhiri.] “They should be still be mourning in their homes and yet, on the call of Ihumātao, on the call of the desecration of sacred land right here in South Auckland, we have … people of West Africa [here] leading local Muslims from Aotearoa, who should be still be mourning.
  
  West African scholar and author Fode Drame told the crowd his people had also had their land confiscated. “The knowledge and the land – that was the centre of their tradition and when the French came, they took away slowly, slowly, the land from the people.”
  
  So the Muslims empathise, having suffered a recent atrocity on sacred ground and some being deprived of homeland.
  
  But at the same time, like Sofia asks above regarding “protest leader Pania Newton and iwi advocate Pita Turei”, do the Muslims know exactly what was Ihumātao wheat fields, what portion is burial grounds, what is archeologically important, and what has actually been purchased by Fletchers?
  
  And as the headline: Muslims at Ihumātao: “They can always rely on us” may indicate a reciprocation of the feelings the nation displayed, standing in thousands acknowledging the Muslim loss in March, how have they decided to side with some of those people, the protesters, and not Jacinda Ardern’s Government stance (so far), the iwi elders and others that suggest the protesters may this time be in error, despite their apparent numbers?
  
  And in that Muslim decision, what of their own beliefs?
  As mentioned above, New Zealanders stood in their thousands acknowledging the mosques massacre and while they did that the Muslim Call to Worship was broadcast nation-wide – in part, the very essence of Muslim belief …”Allah is Most Great. I bear witness that there is none worthy of being worshipped except Allah …”
  So how do Muslims not offend Allah in protesting the “desecration of sacred Maori land”, burial grounds, or what may in fact be wheat fields?

        Correct, but that is not at issue. Maori were active in farming and trading from 1840 odd to the 1860’s on when quite a lot of land was sold/confiscated/traded. They had a thriving trade supplying Sydney with food for a while.
        
        I’m not an expert in the area but one issue was that the tribal chiefs were basically able to use their tribe to work for a pittance and hence they were able to out-compete other potential suppliers. This, combined with some consideration for those forced to labour, lead to law changes that undermined the trade and the farming.
        
        So at Ihumatao the “wheat fields” refers to that period when the land was still in tribal ownership. That area of Auckland is one of the most fertile areas being relatively recent volcanic soils. Mangere in general used to have a lot of market gardens – mostly overtaken by housing these days.

    It was being farmed by Maori when it was confiscated, produce was sold to settlers. Rumours were started that Maori were going to attack the settlers who no doubt had their eyes of cultivated land and appreciated the backing of the British Troops.

        The indigenous people of Australia and the Andaman Islands are not Polynesian. And the author is probably referring to the Austronesian ancestors of people of “New Guinea” rather than to that island’s Melanesian links.
        
        Either way, this does not suggest Polynesians “discovered” America before Siberians moved there.

  I went to a restaurant in Chiangmai that looked out on a tiger park. People paid to walk around amongst these once fearsome beast, pulling their fucking tails and such like.
  As we looked out over this depressing travesty I hoped that one of these lords of the jungle would fight back and rip a few of these tourists apart and lead the pack in a dash for freedom.
  The people I was with told me to STFU before we were dragged away.

        I have spoken with a number of chaps (all seppos) who have shot stags that they had paid for, ranging from guys that have done the graft and taken their chances to a guy that shot a 28 pointer freak by resting his gun on the wire of a fence. ($25K to pull the trigger)

    I believe today is about all tigers, but you might wish to especially support efforts to conserve the most endangered subspecies, the Sumatran tiger. This is the closest Tiger population to New Zealand, and conservation efforts in Indonesia are also supported by our zoos.

No body does hypocrisy better than the left. Last night watching a bit of mind numbing television we were watching the TVNZ production Funny As, a history of NZ Conedy.

The first thing that sticks you is that apparently, comedy in NZ began in 1973, with John Clarke and “Fred Dagg”?

But the other point of note was that all being interviewed were left wing, woke comedians who wore their hypocrisy front and centre.

I say this, because they gave a run down on NZ stand up, and all proudly boasted how they happily freeloader on the circuit, “.never having to pay for a beer all paid for by the breweries”.

Five minutes later, they spoke about the nature of the comedy not being “PC” and how today they are ashamed of themselves, with Mike King breaking down about it (good for the cameras).

Five minutes later they in the contemporary period and Tom Sainsbury is being interviewed and is talking about using new technology. Discussions include his parodying of Paula Bennett & the spoof he put out about Bennett killing the first cat in her car. And then you get some lefty comedienne saying it was on the edge but she could see the joke.

Hang on there, five minutes earlier, you were all telling us how bad it was to not be PC in your story telling, which is it?

And of course my mind then moves to the Greens and their advert last week that was pulled. And in that steaming mess, whose voice was it that was parodying Simon Bridges? None other than Tom Sainsbury.

Which all goes to prove no group does hypocrisy better than the woke left! It’s ok for them to talk about Rich Pricks and the Nats, but if the Nats used the same level of humor against the left and called it satire, wouldn’t we hear the snowflakes crying?

  He comes across as very intelligent, and able to do higher level comedy as well as the low level stuff.
  
  He was a bit before my time, funny guy.

  (Ellis didn’t start work there until late 1986).

one day I would appreciate some questions about the PM saying during the election campaign “climate change is her nuclear free moment “. I simply look at those words and the PMs actions and can’t believe she believes them. I base this on the following actions and my opinion of them.
1. Fly to meeting and return same day due to not willing to risk her young baby. I’ve worked and raised children and sometimes had to use a breast pump to accomodate all needs. Let’s face it if Ardern took climate change seriously she would have either done that or not gone. Otherwise I wish to know the criteria for situations it’s permissible to fly and who gets to use it. Can CEO’s or maybe opposition MPs fly with this reasoning. This should be important in this climate change emergency
2. Fly for a social media talkfest. I hope this wasn’t a waste of time and is just a contribution towards emissions. Because Ardern said not attending the D-Day anniversary was partly because of climate change but this talkfest was important
3.rarotonga holiday. I’m sure the PM could have holidayed in this country and saved the emissions.
All I’m saying is how can the PM say these things about climate change with these actions. I can’t take her seriously

  The UK experience of a dedicated fund for cancer drugs has not worked well.
  I don’t think a specialised agency, or ring-fenced resources, are an effective way of addressing one of very many health issues.
  Should we have similar agencies, and funds, for diabetes, renal disorders, auto-immune conditions, dementia, etc, etc?

    Possibly but I thought one of the main points was to actually concentrate this groups focus on cancer as it is a rapidly evolving side of medicine and some advances are being missed completely.
    
    The current system means that each DHB has a differing approach which in turn makes the job of Pharmac more complex than it needs to be.

      Disagree Tallman, Pharmac does (IMHO) stay fairly well abreast of developments. However at present a lot of the developments are “edge cases” – extremely expensive treatments that work for a very small number of atypical cases.
      
      One example is for Melanoma and the development of individually specific treatment using immune cells grown in culture and re-infused. At long last this sort of treatment is showing real efficacy – but only for some and it is extremely expensive. But for some it is a genuine cure from a stage of that cancer where they typically have 6-12 months to live.
      
      There’s a lot of development going on as we slowly begin to understand what a fiendishly complex mechanism the immune system is.
      
      The overall issue is that there is a limited pool of money for drugs and treatments and there probably always will be. The trick is to use that money so as to benefit the greatest number in the most effective way. And that ain’t easy and is a balancing act that someone, somewhere, will always disagree with.

        Cancer isn’t really a “type of disease”, it’s a broad spectrum of conditions. Difficult to categorise easily.
        
        This issue is displaying the problems one gets when you try to satisfy those with the loudest voice using emotional blackmail as currency.
        
        That’s one reason I disagree with National’s “Cancer Fund” policy and think that it is wrong headed and foolish.

I have been reading that lots of warmists like to point out the fact the the concentration of CO2 is now at 400ppm which is supposedly the highest in history. Won’t you won’t read is that it is because the information presented by the IPCC is based on selective data of papers by Callendar and Keeling – which works in with the ideological narrative the IPCC wants to present.

Science of the 1850s does not agree. Over 90,000 measurements of the day, done with methods that we still use, show that CO2 ran over 400 ppm in the 1800’s and reached highs of 440 ppm and above. Some of the creators of these measurements even won Nobel prizes for their work. Today, alarmists ignore 100% of their measurements. Measurements by Lundgardh, Duerst, Kreutz, Misra, Scholander etc.

The real levels of CO2 fluctuate much more between the 1800s and today.

The last post on Stuffs’ live blog on the Ihumatao protest was at 9.39 on Saturday. The biggest Maori land protest in at least 15 years and this media outlet decide to stop reporting on it.

Nothing must disrupt the narrative from the woke. This must really be the best evidence of how agitprop the media are and really are there to push narrative from the left.

  If they are noticing times are quite they need to look no further that their charge out rates, as that is where the problems lay.
  
  I doubt it has anything at all to do with the Government.
  
  As for new cars, well they have only ever been purchased by the buyers with the means to pay, either by cash or buy now and pay later.

advised the public that the last Cancer Action Plan had finished at the end of last year and that they were in the process of creating a new plan.

Not “implementing a new plan” because the old one was finished.

Not “About to implement a new plan.” because the old one was finished

“Creating a new plan”

Why was the new plan not created, ready to implement, prior to the completion of the old plan?

Do cancer sufferers have to sit in limbo, forced to create petitions for this government to do their job?

What was Labour doing for nine years in opposition, clearly it wasn’t policy development?

Can we get our money back.
