… In China, banks sold a net NZ$28 bln of foreign exchange in June, the biggest one-month net sale in two years, as pressure from the trade war builds, in turn adding to pressure on the Chinese currency.

And yet another in a growing list of companies in the Middle Kingdom is having trouble meeting its debt obligations as they fall due.

China is now actively working to keep foreign companies from leaving the country, dangling special benefits so that the advantages of staying outweigh the heavy tariffs imposed by the Americans. More than 50 global companies have announced or are considering plans to move production out of China. And not just foreign companies. Chinese manufacturers as well are part of the planned exodus.

And to reinforce the point, it turns out that Vietnam’s port throughput now exceeds that for Hong Kong, a major China trade gateway. Vietnam is a major winner from the trade war.

      You are correct on the Zerohedge front Mike … where considerable culling is required.

      Zerohedge is just a platform for many different informed views. Too often contrary views are dismissed in a fit of hubris. People don’t like the presentation of bad news and economists typically forecast after the events.
      Hugh is just picking up the flags that a serious downturn is lurking. I don’t see how we can have that and the former Twyford housing ambitions come to pass. If the international recession continues deepening NZ will have an interesting time ahead.

        The media conveniently forget that Epsom likes ACT, and particularly liked Hide and Seymour. Probably less so Banks but he was better than expected until the Dotcom rubbish. Epsom is highly educated, wealthy and has a huge number of self employed or business owners. Many of them admire ACT because it rejects the sops to the left and populism which National often make in government.
        
        I recall Jim Anderton didn’t face the same level of scrutiny in his electorate.

      I reluctantly agree. He’s not the Winston he once was and I suspect his fitness to serve. His announcement rejecting capitalism was an indicator that his judgment was unsound. He may have some form of mid dementia or alcoholic disorder.

    Chuck, my gut feeling is that National would not “do the deal” that “what’s in it for wynston” wanted but rather than acknowledge that he was able to “con” a sweet deal from the idiot ardern.

  Winston’s track record was well & truly established by the time results were declared after the last election.
  The Nats would still undoubtedly have formed a coalition with NZF if they could reach an agreement. At no point before the election did they rule out supping with the devil & the next time it’ll be just the same.
  I doubt if Labour are particularly enthusiastic about the current situation, but on balance they decided that governing with one arm tied behind their back is better than complete powerlessness – again.

    Hitler & Stalin.
    Hone & Dotcom.
    Winston & the Greens.
    May & the DUP
    Trump & all sorts of people who previously traded insults.
    The Māori Party and the Nats, to the detriment of both eventually.
    
    About the only one who’s survived, and with a grin on his face, is Winston, which is unusual in NZ because small parties that form part of coalition governments in NZ usually take a big hit.

This is not helping fix poverty, homelessness or other names you need to call our welfare problems, all this is doing is encouraging more people to give up paying rent in the dwellings the were in and moving on to something the Government is giving for free. This is Labour everytime it obtains power create problem like they did with housing and just keep throwing money at it without any hope of fixing it and continue to blame the last Government the problem.

I see Goff and some-one who missed the koha are pissed that a large cosmetic shop opened in Auckland with all the razzamataz and used paper confetti.
Shock horror Spitting Phil is going crazy because its going to get into the waste water system and end up in the harbour.
Along with the sewerage that pollutes all the inner harbour beaches there will be paper confetti.
Be great if he got the sewer leakages solved instead

      Newspaper is also biodegradable. However you wouldn’t hose it down the nearest sewer as a matter of course. Even if it bio degraded in a few days, it could easily block the stormwater system if there was enough of it. Should have been swept up and disposed of responsibly.

        Can’t work out why saying don’t wash paper waste down the stormwater drain is deserving of a down tick. If you know anything about silt control and drainage you’d realise it’s stupid. Take a look outside any building site and you’ll see silt mats fitted to adjacent drainage grates. It’s a consent requirement.

Interesting news on the University of Canterbury gender-neutral toilet front! The two gender-neutral toilet facilities in the expensive brand-spanking new facility have now been designated one as male (no urinals, of course!) and one a female. Golly gee. Meanwhile portaloos are being installed outside the building: one a set of gender-neutral loos to cater for all the transgenders that are flooding in to study at UC and the other a set of much-needed urinals for the lads. These new arrangements have all been announced alongside a plea for the lads to discontinue their habit of peeing in frustration on the grass outside the building.

And none of this extra cost and inconvenience and shenanigans would have been necessary had they followed the traditional pattern of a Ladies and a Gents. Pandering to extremes of ‘diversity’ has its costs and unintended consequences.

    The sanitary aspect (dribbling urine) may be a surprise to unisex-toilet advocates who have had limited or no experience of sharing facilities with males.

That was the chant 11 years ago when we used to demonstrate in Kensington High Street adjoining Palace Green where the Israeli Embassy is located. The police also had German Shepherd dogs in tow.

I have just read this about yesterday’s demonstrations on the Gaza ‘border’.

67th Friday of Demonstrations in Gaza: 122 Wounded, including 45 Children, Four Women, Three Paramedics, and Three Journalists

On 19 July 2019, the sixty-seventh Friday of the Great March of Return (GMR), Israeli forces continued to use live fire, amounting to excessive force, in policing unarmed protests. 122 people were injured, including 45 children, four women, three paramedics, and three journalists. Of the injured, 57 sustained wounds from live fire, while 13 were hit directly by tear gas canisters. According to medical sources, five of the injured, including three children, are in critical condition.’

The “palestinians” who moved in voted in the terrorist Hamas govt and started lobbing missiles into Israel. They also smashed the many glasshouses that Israel left there for them to help kick off their economy.
  
  So yeh – a great encouragement to Israel to move toward a two-state solution – NOT.

I see the Prime Minister had her say on the young Girl who Ann Tolley reduced to tears in the young MP’s debate in Parliament last week. I am not saying the Speaker was right or wrong but would Question Jacinda’s motive after her dismal failure at the Young Labour Summer Camp episode and the hidden facts about the sexual assaults that took place. This case still hasn’t seen the Supreme Court yet and has had name suppression , but hopefully without any more Political interference that happened when the offence occurred the young people that were assaulted will get long overdue justice.

      [If I lived in Auckland I would be lining up to attend the case on 2 SEPT at the AUCK DISTRICT COURT!!]
      The obvious procrastination [perhaps the result of some devious “special arrangement,”] would appear to indicate they hope that the case will be forgotten and will quietly happen unnoticed.
      Of course this approach tends to suggest BIG concern from Labour about the result of the court case.
      With 43 days before the Court Case – the result could add to the ongoing dissatisfaction with Labour, and about 12 months before the election in 2020.

I was having thoughts about next year’s election. We need to emasculate the “Jacinda Affect”. Suppose 4 months out from the election Nikki Kaye gets the nod. My reasons are such: Can’t accuse her of bullying a lady. She has no Judith “baggage”. She has beaten Jacinda twice in the usually red seat of Auckland central. She speaks well, is intelligent, works hard, and cares strongly about the issues that face her electorate. Thoughts?

    I’d be happy with someone who looks reasonable, can string a few sentences together without a lot of

    But mostly, I want to see a party with policy points of difference, a plan and a vision that actually stands for their core values.

  There are a number of reasons why this explosion could have happened. The fact that there was a service agent present the day before may well be a contributing factor, but it could well be a faulty product in the first place, which is why you might call a gas fitter.

After listening to the RNZ report on uplifting babies this morning, it seems that this happens mainly because the male near the mother might harm the mother or child. It was asked if there were safe facilities available for mother and baby as an alternative, the answer of course no.
Would this solve the problem?
Answer yes.
So mother Jacinda has done zip nada to organise this. The unspeakable grief these women experience could be reversed immediately with safe housing.

  The price differential is artificial and should not be permitted to affect things, Gas is a good thing to have for when weather etc causes power cuts and I have that but not as a replacement.
  For those who can I suggest my policy of personal heating rather than trying to warm the whole home or even a room. Electric blankets protected by at least two coverings used to warm but not continuosly.

  Given both the large size and poor quality of New Zealand homes by world standards, retrofitted gas fired central heating is the most sensible way to raise the average temperature of them in winter. My observation is that Kiwis would rather spend $20k on a flash deck than a good boiler and radiator system, though. A heat pump system just doesn’t cut it in many parts of NZ, particularly in older homes which are difficult to effectively insulate.
  
  Expect the average winter temperature inside NZ homes to now stagnate or even decrease as fewer people install such systems thanks to the uncertainty created by the oil and gas captain’s call.

  But Slack who is not a serious writer should think about the deep waters he is swimming in. Does every country have to invite in foreigners who may have absolutely no intention of assimilating? Do we have to give up our ways and customs to placate every new person who wants to live here?
  
  And is it racist to criticise Omar and wish her to go back to Somalia if she hates America? I don’t think it is.
  
  I actually think the same about James Cameron who now lives in the Wairarapa amd wants us all to eliminate meat from our diet and get rid of our cows. Is it racist for me to say to an American billionaire – love it or leave it?

She compared ICE agents to Nazi concentration camp guards, refused to condemn an Antifa terrorist attack on an ICE facility, infamously said that the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack by al-Qaeda was merely “some people did something.” She also support terrorists such as Gehad Khaled and her husband. She has also lobbied for the release of The Muslim Brotherhood Leader, Hoda Abdelmonem, and other ISIS members.
      
      Most recently, she claimed the US is responsible for the situation in Venezuela. Ilhan Omar’s response to Venezuela’s murderous dictator? 1) Refuse to support global coalition backing Guaido 2) Back the socialist regime 3) Demonize US aid.
      
      She says she is “unapologetically Muslim,” but what she is is anti-American. Everything she says and does shows it. And let’s not get started on her antisemitism (as are the other women in her “squad”).

It appears that the last week has been probably one of our Princesses worse days of her reign.
Is she really losing it – looks like it.
Her trip to Melbourne, the home of the Australian Labor movement, was full of disasters.
Firstly her speech about Good Governance to the selected 2,000 Labor Party members and her sycophants was a closed meeting. It was that which she was to have given when she thought that Labor would win the election, which middle Australia thwarted.
She failed then to give any media briefing and question time to the Australian media, but did to the New Zealand contingent which she took with her.
See today what the Australian media thought of her.
She then openly insulted Australia by calling our relationship toxic by calling out the fact that New Zealand Criminals are being deported from Australia. This is very heavily supported by both country’s people.
Lastly her private plane broke down again.
She and her inner staff caught an Air NZ plane as she had to get back to feed baby.
How many passengers were bumped to get her etc on the first flight.
When her sycophantic supporters asked how were they going to get home and who was going to pay they were given two fingers and told to get on their bikes. That went down like a brick.
Not a good week – looks as though she is losing it big time – not surprising.

Trump is afraid of her, and his mouth-breathing “base” thinks it hates her, but they’re just stupid, ignorant people without a clue. People that know her—-her constituents—-just love her.

With Omar under attack, supporters within her district, which she won with a stunning 78% of the vote in 2018, are rallying behind her.

“What’s happening right now is so horrifying that standing with her in solidarity is so important,” said Rita Farmer, a fifth-district resident from north-east Minneapolis. “Not only to send a message to her that we support her, but to the rest of the world that we stand by her.

“That support isn’t going away. If anything, these recent attacks on her just strengthen it.”

Omar grew up in Minneapolis, which has a large Somalian and East African community. Her district includes Little Mogadishu, the base of the Somali community in Minneapolis, and previously elected Keith Ellison, the first Muslim to serve in Congress who is now state attorney general.

To Farmer, “appalling” attacks from Trump need to be called out. But the fact that Omar has continued to focus on her agenda, including support for Medicare for all, which she touted in a town hall on Thursday evening in Minneapolis, has made Farmer “that much prouder to stand by her”.

“People aren’t just standing by her for symbolic reasons,” Farmer said. “She’s got the policy proposals. She’s got the bold ideas to back it up. That’s what really excites people and keeps them coming back.”

Erica Mauter was heartened that the community rallied round. But the president’s attacks chilled her, raising concerns about the congresswoman’s safety – and her own.
