  No argument there mikenmild. IIRC it was a Monday afternoon, and we sat in our 3rd form maths class with the radio going, listening as history was made.
  
  Also worthy of note is that the moon landing happened on Sir Edmund Hilary’s 50th birthday, and that he would have turned 100 today.

    Tony we were the same. I was Standard 2, we were all sat their just listening to the broadcast. Thd room was dead silent while we listened to that radio broadcast and afterwards I room the cheers going up when the broadcast was over.

    WangasF- it was playing over the loud speaker system at my school also as I was taking a message from one building to another.
    As I crossed the large concreted area between buildings (no others outside as all in class ) to the sounds of the moon landing it was an eerie feeling – have never forgotten it.

  Touchdown was actually on the 21st of July New Zealand time, at 8.17am. I missed the school bus to listen to it on the radio. Later that day Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon’s surface in the Sea of Tranquility at 2.56pm. We listened to the momentous event on the radio over the intercom in our high school classes . That eveing we crowded around our black and white tv to watch the astronauts on video tape that had been flown over from Australia for the NZBC. No live TV broadcast then. Apollo 11 left a huge sense of wonder and admiration imprinted on many of us that stays with me today.

The law of unintended consequences is playing out at the brand spanking new University of Canterbury Students’ Association building which has, fashionably, installed gender-neutral toilets, meaning only cubicles and no urinals. Seems that, given the differing length of time the genders take to use the facilities, frustrated queues are forming and the boys in particular are finding the situation particularly troublesome. A quick duck-in to the loo to have a quick slash at a urinal is no longer an option for the lads and they aren’t taking the situation sitting down! Not happy chappies at all.

But it’s ok. All those transgenders at UC will be feeling that much more comfy, and that, after all, is what it’s all about.

  While I don’t agree with gender neutral toilets on principal, welcome to the women’s world of queuing for toilets since forever!! Plus I imagine the cleaners will find there is a lot more work to do than with a urinal after the boys have all had a few beers.

    To be fair, most workplaces have always had unisex toilets (usually because there is only one or two 🙂 ). It’s only ever been a issue when you are dealing with larger numbers of people. I’m not a fan because urinals are such an efficient use of space and time.

On the one hand, they claim that there is no such thing as objective and biologically determined gender – it is merely a ‘social construct.’ On the other hand, we see transgenders cutting their cocks off to thereby become a ‘woman.’ As a corollary, this confused stance also places the very notion of ‘homosexuality’ on very shaky ground indeed. If there are no genders, then how can someone claim to be attracted to the ‘same’ gender.

  I worked in a university and my experience is that the girl’s toilets are much cleaner and they are safe spaces for the girls to chat and cry when the boyfriend talked to another girl. Guess that won’t be happening in the toilets now. No one wins.

      With the unisex cubicles, to make people feel more comfortable, the walls and door go right to the floor and there is a handbasin in each. Which has resulted in a lot more adults seemingly more comfortable doing their #2’s at work…. and yep, toilet brush doesn’t seem to be used much.

Also, worth keeping a record of large, ash-producing volcanic events. From a cursory non-scientific glance, there seems to be an increase in larger eruptive events, or changes in the type of eruptions, eg Stromboli. If the link between galactic muons and silica-rich volcanoes is true, we should see an increase in these types of eruptions, which will cool the atmosphere, no matter what the alarmists claim. I would also be looking very carefully at any anomalies around Taupo, ( not that I am currently aware of any).

  A small but important detail FWIW: The RNZAF withdrew its Canberra’s from service many years ago and currently (Thanks to Helun) has no ‘bomber’ / combat- type machines in its inventory. Such films as would have arrived here would gave probably come in on a commercial flight.

    I would dispute that we have no “bomber’ / combat type aircraft capability.
    
    Notwithstanding their imminent replacement:
    Orion: This is supposed to be a seek and destroy aircraft as well as a search and rescue aircraft. It is supposed to be able to deliver a range of missile inventory so while neither bomber nor fighter specifically, this aircraft could easily deliver Exocet-type or other air-to-surface attack capability.
    Hercules: This has many variants, including gunship. I know that the gunship variant and transport variant are nominally different models, but I really don’t understand why a roll-in roll-out module can’t be developed that allows any given Hercules to be operated in either transport or gunship configurations. Sure it wouldn’t be a 10-minute switcherooney but be a bloody sight cheaper and more useful if our fleet could do both.

      The US offered NZ the order placed by Pakistan which the US cancelled of 21 F16 A and B’s for USD $100 mio- which was ridiculously cheap as they had just had all the electronics upgraded and they were essentially brand new.
      We then had a change of Govt and Clark didn’t take up the offer.

  Do you recall how terrible the quality of those first moon landing videos were – really grainy and
  poorly defined. Turns out that was because at the time only the Australians were receiving the signals and the equipment they had available was very primitive (relatively speaking) and they had no way to directly capture the video stream. So they used a camera to capture the TV screen that they were using to display the feed directly- hence the quality issues.
  
  I think I can remember being late to school because of staying to listen to the touchdown, then the whole school had the first step broadcast. Mesmerising stuff

      LPG is a cu*t of a gas. Heavier than air so it sits around and waits for you if there is a leak.

  The explosion and consequent damage was a civil event, a gas contractor was working on the house the previous day. Interesting for me was the statement that this suburb has piped gas, I thought the South Island had to use bottled LPG.
  
  Anyway the damage should be covered by insurance. The medical needs of the people will be covered by our Health sysem. So it comes then down to anything else.
  
  I had a motorcycle crash several years ago, had 14 rib breaks, a collapsed lung, fractured shoulder and ankle. I remember waking up not being able to breathe and thinking that this was it, I was going to die. I recall the first responders asking (crazy, huh?) if it was OK to cut off my riding gear, and a vague recollection of them piercing my chest to insert the tube to reinflate my lung. I’m told some 700ml of blood poured out that tube.
  
  I had 11 days in ICU, over 3 weeks in hospital, 3 months off work coughing up blood, and probably a year of slowly getting back to normal. I remember my first visit to the bathroom after a week in ICU. It was a 15 metre walk. I had to sit down twice because of fainting risk. It’s a long road back after something like that. What I’m trying to give is a sense of how much of a hole you have to dig yourself out of when a serious event happens.
  
  ACC came to the party with income support and medical needs but mentally and emotionally it was all down to me. The ACC case manager was all about getting me back to work and off their books. But not in a bad way, I don’t think. That should be everyone’s goal, in my opinion.
  
  You have to make a personal decision. Decide that you’re going to get up, that you’re going to make that 100m walk even though it leaves you breathless afterwards. Then 150m. Then farther. And farther. Then back to the gym. Light exercise under load. Then more, and more and more. Because what’s the alternative? Be sorry for yourself the rest of your life?
  
  I still ride that bike every day. I’m doing heavy lifting at the gym which I started because I couldn’t handle anything aerobic. I trekked to Everest Base Camp 18 months ago for the specific purpose of throwing any “too risky” monkeys off my back. That wasn’t ACC. That was me.
  
  I know this phrase gets many people excited because it’s not very “caring” or “understanding”, but in many ways, “harden the fuck up” isn’t a negative strategy. You just box that shit up, put it in a hole, and move on.

    In terms of VIP use, basically only the PM uses it, or the royals. The rest of the time they’re staff transport and freight to resupply out various overseas postings etc.
    
    The logic is that you can take a full delegation, including media and officials etc, and it makes the entire operation easier from a logistics point of view for both sides of the visit.
    
    The aircraft have scheduled flying hours per year so if they weren’t flying to Australia they’d be doing training flights around NZ anyway. Obviously flying them costs $$$ but it’s dollars we’re spending anyway.

    I disagree. You can’t run immigration and border control policies based on the nationality someone “feels” they are. Your nationality is on your passport. These people are New Zealanders. As such, New Zealand is the only country that must let them enter and reside. All other countries can refuse.

        Only if they went there after 26 Feb 2001. If they were there on that day they have a permanent residence visa which allows them to apply for citizenship.
        That is the thing I never forgave Helen Clark for. She had no way of preventing the new visa being introduced. She did however lie to the people of New Zealand when she said, on her return to New Zealand that it would mean that there were no changes as far as New Zealanders moving there were concerned.

      Huge difference in Australian taking NZ citizenship, they lose their Australian passport. Cannot be a dual passport holder if born in Australia, can if you are born in a country that allows it.

        I should have put they “could” lose their Australian Passport, once you take a second passport, you are subject to exactly the same laws as the rest. The only way you can be 100% sure is have an Australian Passport. You cannot be deported stateless.
        Not sure if NZ law is the same.
        You can hold two valid Australian passports at the same time, did this for over a decade.
        Any child born in Australia and resides there until ten, is entitled to an Australian Passport.
        My sister born 1948 was treated differently to me born 1951 as far as nationality.

      Gas is heavier than air and in a well-sealed house it would have settled near the floor. I guess it wouldn’t be smelt unless one lay down on the floor. As the level built up it found the ignition source which could have been the heater itself or maybe the motor in the fridge.
      Either way, that repairman has some explaining to do.

    Which is pretty close to the New Zealand price. Our local station is charging, if I worked it out correctly around $5.50 USD/US gallon.
    Now what sort of gallon are you using? If it is the Imperial one petrol here is much more expensive.
    And then to see what it really means tell us what the median income is in each of those countries when compared to New Zealand. I’m pretty sure that they are much higher overseas.

It makes very sobering reading and highlights the close parallels between Canada’s experience – indeed, mishandling – of indigenous poverty and child abuse. Giesbrecht’s experiences are frighteningly familiar, and show how misplaced the socialist path being adopted in NZ is.

  As I said earlier, I know little about the New Zealand situation. I simply don’t know if there are similarities between Canada’s Indigenous situation and the Maori situation in New Zealand. But if I am allowed to give just one word of advice on the subject of child welfare, it is this: “A child is a child. Keep racial politics out of it, and just see to that child’s best interests.”

They’re probably safe from a nuclear attack in the Persian Gulf. The hostiles all are too close to each other. Any one could obliterate all.
The US has a naval base in Bahrain and its CENTCOM Command in Qatar. Qatar shares a large gas field with Iran. The Sunni/Shia war rages throughout the whole region. The Turks seem fluid on a daily basis between Islam/Nato/USA/Russia and they too have a base in Qatar. All those bases are close to each other in the Gulf!

The risk of a rash act though by a rogue player is high. We cannot have a world government with military power–that would morph into a world dictatorship. The current situation needs our earnest prayer.

    With Canterbury’s population about 624,000 and 440 monthly average consents annualized to 5,280 … this suggests residential consenting is running at about 8.5 units per 1000 population per annum ( a standard industry measure ).
    
    The major reason for this is the growing ‘affordability gap’ of Greater Christchurch (for both residential and commercial … refer recent JLL Report) … attracting young people and entrepreneurial business.     Had a couple of long term mates in for dinner tonight plus a mate’s son and partner. Both were young keen public servants who did not trust or respect ardern. They did not trust or believe the “science” as fed out by the government and media on climate change and while they have just bought a house together they are now looking at options that give them more lifestyle than just a career.
    
    So, 5 – 1 against ardern and co. My old mate is just a stirrer but I did detect a couple of negatives towards ardern… time will tell.
    
    We’re both born and bred Northlanders so are well acquainted with maori conservation and child abuse.

More than 50 global companies have announced or are considering plans to move production out of China. And not just foreign companies. Chinese manufacturers as well are part of the planned exodus.
  
  And to reinforce the point, it turns out that Vietnam’s port throughput now exceeds that for Hong Kong, a major China trade gateway. Vietnam is a major winner from the trade war.
