Yet another fatal crash on that dreadful piece of road between Whangarei and Ruakaka. Yes, a road that National had in their plans for four-laning until it was cancelled by the CoL.
Twyford and Genter, I presume you’re going to the funeral to explain to the relatives why you have blood on your hands.

    When I say “fine,” I mean that this stretch of road has unobstructed views, it is level, there are no sharp corners or decreasing-radius curves and off-camber corners. The road surface is not pot-holed or lumpy.

  that stretch from the caltex servo through to WEI has had a terrible record.
  
  in the last year or so theyve put plastic sticks down the centreline as a cheap attempted fix to the problem.
  
  personally – at least during dark hours – i feel theyve made it more tricky to drive as they tend to confuse your peripheral vision.
  
  the answer of course – and its desperately needed as everyone who drives it knows – is a four lane highway.
  
  when they finish the section from puhoi to warkworth – just get the roading gangs to keep building north…

    No no. Once the current pipeline of projects is finished, I would be surprised if you see any new divided roads being built. IIRC the Minister is interested in safety improvements to current roads, but these are about fixing black spots, specifc dangerous bends etc.
    
    Unfortunately if you live in provincial or rural areas, the best you can hope for is marginal improvements to existing roading, not new roading.
    
    When I lived in Wellington I used public transport to go to work but that was purely driven by the cost of parking in the city. Now that I live in Christchurch I would not even contemplate public transport.
    
    Unusually I learned to drive relatively late in life. So I did spend a long time relying on public transport and cycling. When I learned to drive, it dramatically changed my life for the better. So I am now a self confessed “car Nazi” ?

      Apparently this is how it was historically done, and they changed it for this series. I agree they should have stuck with the wicket count as the first option, then a super over, then boundaries.

    Why would you go back to the 50+50 overs part of the contest that had been left behind for the “Super Over” to decide the outcome?
    
    If the match was still tied after the Super Over, why would a second Super Over not be played? After all, that Super Over format had been chosen as the mechanism for resolving a deadlock in the 50+50 overs game. When it failed to do so first time, what was preventing its use a second time? Five minutes of TV time?

Opinion piece in Stuff today by Mr Thomas Pippos, who would be one of New Zealand’s top tax experts. Look out you rich pricks earning over $70k pa, the government is probably coming for you.

Again. It’s only fair. Right?

…using projected 2020 figures, 12 per cent of the population pay 48 per cent of all personal taxation. The top 3 per cent of the population pay 24 per cent. Flipping it around, 48 per cent of the population only contribute 8 per cent of all personal taxation. And these metrics are more pronounced when initiatives like Working for Families are factored in.

  Calculating tax rates without factoring in WFF is pretty much fraud.
  
  I don’t think they can just hike the current tax rate because that will hit too many people. NZ has an extremely low top threshold.
  
  Instead they will likely introduce an extra band (eg. 50% for over $120k).

    50% for $120k plus, puts NZ back in the dim old days of 1970s up to 1986 and the introduction of GST and the resetting if tax rates by Roger Douglas.
    
    A rate of 50% means people will be discouraged from working (as most of the money goes to the govt and some to pensions or savings). NZ’s productivity per capita will decline further.
    
    Do these people never learn from history? Dismantling WFF is an imperative to get people into work, raising productivity, raising wages and increasing the tax take! Hammering those at the top end only encourages tax avoidance more!

      Dismantling WFF is just going to complicate the tax administration. Everyone with dependents expects tax relief for them. Previously employers had to deal with that through different tax codes.
      WFF acts as an embedded refund or negative income tax.

        Kev, why do you want a complex tax system? We have a regime that penalizes work and encourages low productivity.
        
        Rather than pay levels being set commensurate with input and output, we have employers being encouraged to pay low because the employee receives a subsidized benefit paid by the taxpayer. With an associated level of bureaucratic complexity. Why to whose benefit?
        
        Much easier to set a higher minimum tax threshold, get rid of WFF and encourage employers and employees to achieve higher productivity and earnings. This then flows to the government tax take. However, bureaucrats and politicians alike can’t resist creating welfare dependency.

      WFF might make some sense if it was aligned to the lowest tax rate.
      
      Right now we have people paying the highest tax rate and being on WFF. Something is clearly broken.
      
      But that’s socialism for you. Try fix a problem caused by penalties and subsidies by adding yet another layer of penalties and subsidies.

      Hard Cheese, with this lot, I don’t share your optimism. Under Muldoon NZ had a 60% rate and as a newly qualified accountant in the 1980s my top marginal rate of tax was 50%.

      It’s not just those on jobseeker benefits to be taken into account. There’s the 48% paying 8% of income tax, not counting Working for Families and other income based taxpayer transfers. For example Accommodation Supplement and income related rent.

  No tax under $20K pa. Thereafter flat tax rate of 20%. Scrap GST. Scrap WFF. The decrease in rates will be offset by less tax avoidance (why would you bother?) and the massive increase in economic activity overall (i.e. growing the pie). If they cannot run the government on that, they should either become more efficient, or commit mass harikari. Unemployable multi-generational beneficiaries shall be placed into large inflatable dinghies with a compass, some star charts and some cold KFC, and set adrift in the Pacific. Thank you.

    That comment is also an argument in support of pay disparities. A top band/actor/sportsperson should of course be paid more than a less talented or interchangeable individual/group, because the best in the business command higher remuneration as they provide more value and comprise a tiny percentage of total participants.

    A rule change for this year’s tournament. The SuperOver was a contrived ending for TV.
    
    The Stokes issue will lead to a change of the rules, but in fairness what happened was a fluke and put the pressure back on NZ.
    
    My question is though how did Stokes face the last ball in the 50th over? With the penultimate ball Stokes and partner ran 1 successfully, but on the second there was a run out. It was always my understanding was that even though the players had crossed, Stokes should have returned to the end he came from, as the run was not completed. Was this an oversight or have the rules changed?

      No, your understanding is wonky. The batsmen have swapped ends when they cross over – the one closest to the end where the stumps are put down is the one that’s out. A run hasn’t been scored because both batsmen haven’t made their ground but Stokes stays where he is.
      
      It’s the same with any other wicket – if the batsmen cross while the ball is in the air before being caught, then the new batsman goes to the non-striker’s end.

  All rules are fair if they apply equally to all.
  
  They are only “stupid” rules because they went against the Black Caps this time. They would have been Ok if the Black Caps had one.
  
  It is very common in all sports to have tie breaker rules.

    The tie-breaker rule is perfectly fair and was just unlucky for us.
    
    A couple of other areas could be changed and made fairer, e.g. the ball should be dead if it strikes a batsman while he is running, there should not be run-outs by deflection – only when the impetus of the ball comes from the fielding side.

  That’s the rule – many years ago Andrew Symonds hit a ball straight back the way it came, only to hit the non-strikers bat on the full and have it lolly up for an easy catch at mid on.
  
  This time it went in favour of the batting team, if it had richocheted onto the stumps for a run out would you be complaining? It’s all part of the game.
  
  I do think the boundary countback is stupid – the scores being level should mean either a replay or a joint champion.

    There has always been a convention that overthrows are not attempted under such circumstances, even though they’re allowed.
    Sort of thing happens all the time; except last night’s occurance whereby the ball carries on over the boundary is rare & the umpire has no choice, but awars four runs.
    The alternative would be for the rule to change so that the ball is declared ‘dead’.
    Won’t happen.

$433,000 agreed in compensation on the first of 258 events.
The same agreement for each event would see $111,714,000 spent of the budgeted $200,000,000.
The $ 433,000 agreed Saturday was less than one quarter of one percent (0.0021%) of that $200 million budgeted.

But Council of Licenced Firearms Owners spokesperson Nicole McKee says the figures are underwhelming – there were 900 registered for the event, but only 169 showed up on Saturday.

As the exercise progresses, and budgeted money remains unused, will any change be made in compensation to attract those known “to still be out there”, and will that not greatly piss off the most conscientious owners who have already handed in their weapons?

Should there not be a “Ngai Tahu” payment, if later agreements are more than those agreed to now, so that those who have been conscientious are “topped up” to any higher rate?

(So there is not a repeat of the recent Government dishonesty in exam fees – cancelling those outstanding, but not refunding those who had paid – after some children had got jobs and paid the $76 fee themselves – nice ‘lesson’ they learnt)

    The Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Act came into effect on 20 June 2019. The new regulations allow for the buy-back of newly prohibited firearms and parts from owners within a six month amnesty period (by 20 December 2019).
    To receive compensation for prohibited firearms you are required to have a valid firearms licence. If you are handing in parts and accessories included in the prohibited list, you do not require a firearms licence to receive compensation.

I see yet another article over the weekend continuing the recent trend of changing the spelling of local place names.

This is usually driven by a “look-at-me” types (not always Maori), who suddenly realise we should be using an A instead of an E, or vice versa.

Surely the same energy should be put into people names and stop the madness of mis-spelling perfectly good names through some misguided belief that if their little darling has a unique name, it will somehow make them rich and famous.

    The prewar Japanese name for NZ was 新西蘭 (literally “New” “West Holland”). The Chinese still use something similar.
    Nowadays, katakana rule for foreign names, so it’s the familiar ニュージーランド (Nyūjīrando).
    
    If Maori wants to survive, it will need to transliterate like crazy and follow the example of Japanese. Having a central Wellington committee to officially synthesize new words is a death sentence for Te Reo.

      Te Reo implicitly denotes its an oral language. Fossilised about 1835. It’s got some serious use on the Marae for cultural and legal purposes as tribal land rights are included. That is a reserved use.
      
      Elsewhere Te Reo has little purpose. Who wants hu’s and koti’s? Even to use it that way is to bastardise it by not recognising its grammar. With too few root words what is the point in developing a new language. Transliteration would only likely be bad English spelling–imagine tying to teach English in that context.

      Given that English is a Germanic language, “Zealand” is close enough to Dutch “Nieuw Zeeland” or “sealand” or German “Neuseeland”.
      
      “New Sea Land” isn’t a bad description for this remote archipelago that was separate from the rest of the world until a thousand years or so ago.
      
      If you wanted to complicate things with diacritical marks (as Maori has been with macrons), we could adopt the spelling from the English language’s closest relative, Frisian: “Nij Seelân”.
      
      According to Google, the Chinese name for New Zealand sounds like “Xīn xīlán” “shin -shee-land”. This sounds to be a phonic approximation of “New Zealand”, and I have heard this is also close to the Chinese term for a type of jade. Perhaps a Chinese speaker can help us with this.

      The English won the war, but the English language does not seem to be able to keep its placenames in this country.
      Could you imagine the uproar if Japanese placenames in Hokkaido were to be renamed in the Ainu language. (Actually, many Hokkaido placenames sound exotic to mainland Japanese because they are derived from the Ainu language. Names like Oshamambe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshamambe,_Hokkaido (sounds like a town in some African country).

  At the time of the the 2013 census almost fifteen hundred same sex couples had kids in NZ.
  Personally I’m not particularly interested in watching a TV programme about anybody’s kids, but the surrogate mother process for couples who can’t have kids was fairly interesting.

  That was a really good column. Exactly the same in the small town I live in. It’s 17kms to the nearest bus stop. Sheep don’t fit in a Leaf well (well the ponsonby green voting ones might), the old flat-deckm, or double cab ute or the tradie van are the vehicles of choice out here. Everybody tows.

    One of these crooks has been sentenced to home detention. They have endangered perhaps thousands of people with their fraudulent licences.
    
    Our shamefully weak Immigration and Protection Tribunal will probably let them stay in the country.
    
    Meanwhile, in Christchurch, a boy aged 16 spent months in custody on charges related to the mosque massacre video.
    
    Finally on bail, he has been charged with having possession of the terror video, as well as another charge of breaching a remand order by smoking cannabis.
    
    An interesting aspect of his bail conditions were that he was barred from contact with a paint-ball group.
    
    Being held in prison was a tougher fate than that imposed on the Muslim lad who planned a car and knife massacre of Christchurch citizens.

Is it just me, or does it seem more and more clear that Cameron Slater is posting on WOBH under the SB handle?

Looking at the writing style and terms used, it looks that way to me. There’s post about Banksy having another tilt at the Auckland mayoralty that refers to Boag “poo fingering” campaigns. Well that term has Cameron written all over it, and Boag is clearly one of his hobbyhorse topics.

Just waiting now for SB to post about deer hunting or utes.

Bob Brown , former Aussie Greens leader, lead a caravan up the East Coast to Queensland during their last election to protest the Adarne (sp?) coal mine development.
Now he is protesting the development of a very large wind farm on an island off Tasmania –visually not good, will kill birds etc.
