DPF sick :-(

Fairly sick so don’t expect any posts until my fever drops away. Off to raid the Pharmac budget this morning!

      Get some Vick Vapodrops (the originals in the blue pack, not those feeble honey ones) if you start a cough. Tuck one into your cheek and let it dissolve slowly.
      They work very well. Very well. If it turns out to be a severe cold, as soon as you feel a bit better, wrap up warmly – scarf around neck, beanie – and go for a walk. Fresh air does wonders.

      Sorry to hear it, DPF. Hope you get well soon. Apparently the flu shots don’t stop you getting it but you are not supposed to get it so bad. However there are a lot of strains around so maybe it’s hard for the shot to cover new strains. Take plenty of fluids and it will run its course.

    Having just recovered from the same thing I’d like to put in a recommendation for my hot toddy recipe. Into a large mug goes:
    50% scotch
    50% hot water
    1 tablespoon maple syrup
    about 1/4 teaspoon of of mixed spice if you have it
    
    Drink while watching hikok45 videos on YouTube. Not sure if it works or not, but after a few of these you won’t care anyway.

  Most people who say they have the ‘flu’ have nothing more a cold. Of course severe colds can be miserable things. However if you really do get influenza, you will know the difference.

    Exactly. The flu is pretty rare. I take Kyolic garlic tablets daily which, when combined with being reasonably fit for a chap of a my years, limits my colds to one every 2-3 years.
    
    I’ve not had a cold since 2016, however as it happens I’ve had a cold for the the last week.
    
    Bloody awful, and I avoid drugs where possible. This time I folded and went and got some Sudafed PE Day+Night – essentially Phenylephrine + Paracetamol.
    
    I can confirm that this is absolutely useless for congestion, coughing, sleeping. In fact the only thing it relieved me of was quite a few dollars.
    
    Also, something I learned this week is that a 1000mg vitamin C tablet has 1600% of the RDI of vitamin C!

      I swear by antihistamines for when you need to stop the running nose. They let you breathe when you sleep. Just don’t make the mistake I made a few years ago and think decongestant cough medicine means that it stops the runny nose etc.

      Pharmacies make most of their money by pushing dubious remedies. If you have a cold, you can take paracetemol and drink water and stay in bed for a couple of days. What cures a cold is time.
      
      Influenza is something else entirely. In 2014 a colleague died of influenza. Mid forties and fit. It is a phenomena called a cytokine storm. It is this phenomena that was present in the 1918 flu epidemic. The deaths were disproportionately in healthy adults between the ages of 20 and 40.

    I thought I was dying once (literally), nausea, numbness in hands and feet and overwhelming weakness.
    The GP pointed out it was no biggy, the flu does that sometimes….. W…. T….. F….. !!!
    
    Sure enough a couple of days later all was good again.

  Agreed. I was talking about that very thing the other day as my workplace is hit by the heavy colds going around. Ah the good old days when you didn’t need to show your drivers licence to the chemist to pick up pain killers for your migraine and the cold and flu left you humming (but still functional) when you doubled the dose cause you just couldn’t be off work. Stupid stoners spoil it for the rest of us.

  John Key bought into two falsehoods.
  
  First that the ban on those cold tablets would reduce crystal meth production. Ha ha.
  
  Second that there was an alternative ingredient called phenylephrine that is nearly as effective at reducing nasal congestion. Well it is not. Just spend 10 minutes browsing the studies that have been done. Taken orally for nasal congestion it is useless.
  
  It was a stupid decision that should be reversed. Of course that won’t happen.

This old Gypsy recipe:
Juice of 3 large lemons
4 garlic cloves juiced
Honey to sweeten
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp powdered ginger
Mix with 500mls hot water.
In my case I sweated the flu virus away overnight, but haven’t needed it for years.

Get well cobber. My daughter had the flu jab, then got the flu bug about 6 weeks later. She reckoned that she was dying then after a week only half dying. Said she was very glad that she had the jab otherwise she would’ve ended up being a very sick woman and most likely ICU material.

Straight rum and green ginger wine for what ails you. Lots of it. You might end up speaking in cursive like a sailor but then you’ll have advanced in the world. 🙂
