  The sun is happily to be seen in Christchurch after a few days leave. I’ll be able to turn the lights off at last.
  
  For those of you caught by Seasonal Affective Disorder the warm led house lights give a sufficient red output to be most usefu. For several seasons, since using them, I have escaped that nuisance of going dormant during autumn/winter.

      No. Simply swap the existing bulbs for leds with the same socket connections. The 9-10 watt bulbs for downlight replacements work well. Very cheap to run.

        They just don’t seem bright enough.
        
        I’ve replaced 4 100w downlights for 4 9 watt leds and it just seem a little duller than before.
        
        May have to add a couple or go for 12-15 watts.

    State houses are mushrooming up all over the country.
    This work was started during the term of the National government but you can be assured Twyford will be looking for the kudos. Many HNZ units were originally build on the kiwi quarter acre which are now infilled with another house on the back.
    The old two story units that needed major refurbishment have been demolished to make way for new high density housing.
    You may not have noticed them because your town won’t have had a new suburb pop up, but they’re there sprinkled in among existing homes.

      When I fly over Glen Innes, I can really see the hectare-sized lots laid bare, waiting for utilities and development.

  Note that that is the true government borrowings, including stuff hidden ‘off the books’ in SOEs and amounts to currently 37% of GDP, to go up to about 40% of GDP in 2023 (assuming 2% inflation +2% GDP growth per year) fiscally responsible my arse.

  They remove the subsidies for cochlear implants for needy kids and give millions to ‘gender re-assignment’ surgery – bloody unbelievable.
  To take away the opportunity for kids to enhance their learning is not the behaviour of a ‘caring government’; but like urgency to increase the fuel levy, it will not be challenged by our MSM.

If last week’s Budget is a new “wellbeing” initiative, what was the Labour Coalition Budget last year?
What in last year’s Budget was not there for the “wellbeing” of New Zealanders?
Don’t confuse any of it with delivery since – just name one item that wasn’t to progress the economy and so benefit the nation, or change people’s circumstances for the better.

Last year’s Budget announced over $5.3 billion to lift children out of poverty.
Wasn’t that “wellbeing”, and isn’t this year’s Budget just a continuing allocation of that total announced a year ago?
And have 384,000 families yet received the equivalent of $75 a week announced last year, or is that still to fully kick in this year or next?

Branson said on Twitter: “New Zealand has announced a ‘wellbeing’ budget, promising to provide billions to care for the country’s most vulnerable people.
“A brilliant blueprint for the rest of the world.”
Mental health was the big winner in the 2019 Budget, with the Government allocating $1.5 billion for mental health and addictions services over four years.

Obviously mental health was well due attention: catering for 325,000 people with “mild to moderate” mental health and addiction needs by 2023-24.
It’s a “wellbeing” initiative? No, it’s an “about fucking time something was done!” issue, especially if you are one of the 325,000 and you turn is not going to be until sometime later in 2024.

        Jack 5: Yes indeed…prior to my initial breakdown more than 40 years ago I had been smoking dope all day every day for months…Back then, the guy who became my long term shrink didn’t think dope had played any significant part…ten or twelve years later, he changed his mind, and as time went on, he became more and more certain of his change of heart…sadly that was too late for me to benefit.
        
        Now, the link between mental illness and dak, especially in the young, is pretty well accepted by everyone in the field. I have told my kids this, and warned them off it…Will they listen? Who knows…I sure hope so.

        Ross 12: Ah, No…the shit we smoked in the US in 1978 was perhaps five times as potent as the stuff we smoked here at that time…I am told – but have no way of knowing – that what is available in NZ now is TEN times as strong as what it was in 1978…I dunno…I haven’t smoked it since maybe 1981…somewhere around there…when I finally “got” that it was not a good drug for me.

        I drove Overlands London Kathmandu in the seventies, I will always remember one of the punters cooked up a bunch of hash cookies at the Withies in Kathmandu and served them up. People that had never encountered hash, did for first time. One of them freely walked into a very hot fire, I guess thinking they were invincible or not thinking at all. Was badly burnt on bare feet.

      Ghandi: so let’s be clear here…Do you think someone who has just had a joint is not a hazard on the road? (Yes, I do understand the distinction between impaired by cannabis vs. cannabinoids in the blood)
      
      During my drug fueled drive across the US 100 years ago I would often have a smoke before I had to navigate a series of interstate exits and on ramps…I would frequently “lose” 30 -60 minutes of time…when I looked on the map – no GPS in 1978 – I would see that I had navigated four or five changes, but have no memory of having done so…Do you think I wasn’t a hazard during that “lost” time?

        1. Your Hunter S. Thompsonesque anecdote elevates you in my estimation.
        
        2. I don’t claim that there is NO impairment when driving under the influence of cannabis, merely that its role in accidents is often conflated with and presented as being commensurate to that of alcohol. They are not equivalent. From my experience, I speculate that driving while sleep deprived or with low blood sugar is far more likely to end badly, compared with cannabis consumption.
        
        I have some empirical experience of driving under the influence of both alcohol and cannabis, and I’m damn sure that I would rather have stoned drivers on the road than drunk drivers. NEITHER is ideal, but false equivalencies should be avoided.

    Having spent a small fortune already in bottled water for drinking, the ultimate insult is the Council getting snotty about how I put out my plastic bottles for recycling in a manner convenient for them, when if they did their job properly I wouldn’t have to buy plastic bottles in the first place.

  Remember the last time teachers received a pay rise was in 2017 ( as per the June 16- June 18 collective agreement). So when our minister of Ed tells you that the teachers are being offered 9.3% over 3 years , it does not take into account the nil rise the year before . So if you were honest minister it is 9.3% from 2018-2022 = 4 years. Great way to save money for a govt. delay pay talks and you save a years increase, not sure how that works in a growing healthy economy

Who folaued up whom –

When Tasmania’s Parliament passed legislation allowing people aged 16 and over to legally change their gender on their birth certificate, Israel Folau felt that represented an affront to God, who created man and woman purposefully, and any change to this design is therefore the work of Satan.
So, despite not having posted on Twitter since November 25, 2018, Folau tweeted the Tasmania headlines and summed up his feelings with an abbreviated artwork of Corinthians 6: 9-10, followed by verses from Galatians, 5:19 – 21 and a comment of his own.
And all hell sort of broke loose.

Apparently Israel Folau had saved his father, Eni, from a heart attack at home – bringing them closer together, with Israel a constant support as Eni battled through kidney disease in recent years, forced to use a dialysis machine at home.
Meanwhile a dispute with a Hillsong church leader led Eni to start his own church in Kenthurst, called Truth Of Jesus Christ Church, and Israel Folau took on a leadership role in that church and began to preach, echoing the strong beliefs of his father.

So when events with Tweets and Rugby Australia reached a crisis point and Israel and Maria mulled over his potential moves after being strongly advised to take down the offending post, Israel phoned his father, who told his son he would be destined for hell if he shunned God’s own words, and that sealed Israel’s stance.

Of considerable note, I think, is that neither the Corinthians or Galatians quotes say “Hell awaits you” but in fact “… those that do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God”
Apparently the one to say “Hell may await you” was father Eni to his son, Israel.

Interesting, perhaps – compared to the hash the Rugby Australia and Rainbow reaction have made of the entire issue, and in particular the eagerly meddlesome bloody media.

This morning on ZB a Councillor was interviewed re the threat of new Freedom Camping bylaw allowing carte-blanche living in vehicles in the streets. He claimed it all comes back to a central govt law change in 2011 in prep for the Rugby World Cup, which means Councils have to specify prohibited areas, based on evidence, and can’t just prohibit all residential streets.

Does anyone know the details of all this? This article is about the threatened bylaw, but a central govt law wasn’t mentioned. The last two paragraphs here imply that Auckland Council *could* place a general prohibition on camping on streets, but chose not to: ” the regulatory committee’s chairwoman, Linda Cooper, said: “The regulatory committee weighed up the advantages and disadvantages of including a general rule recommendation in the public consultation material.

“The committee decided against including the general rule due to concerns about potential impacts on homeless or vulnerable people living in cars. Final recommendations will be made by the hearings panel in April.”

The more obvious solution would be to have properly managed camping sites for these people to stay in while more housing is built, not to just have open slather in our streets!

  People need to stop calling it freedom camping as this glamorises it, call it illegal camping. There are already camp grounds in existence that have toilet and shower facilities. It is not the council and ratepayers duty to provide free camping areas for these bludgers. Have a nationwide ban on camping in public reserves and roadside.

OK folks, I have to say this: whaleoil is now a more interesting site.

I had given up on whaleoil for a while because my harmless comments were being removed, but they seem to have stopped doing that. Now they come up with important topics that I care about (freedom of speech for one), and I’m giving it another go.

Here things have become slow due to the rather limited number of articles and the unnecessary moderation. Even anon. posters who have never created a problem should now be allowed back ‘into the fold’.

Come on folks, we desperately need several busy, interesting sites that allow posters to take a different perspective from the MSM and this dreadful government!

  My two cents for what it’s worth……
  Prior to the introduction of moderation/vetted named posters, I thought some of the comments on the posts on Kiwiblog were, to be honest, getting quite nasty and puerile and was ruining what I think is NZ premier right wing blog. Some of the comments were no better than the majority of those you would find on The Standard. I’m all for robust debate, and a bit of banter thrown in for good measure, but to be honest, things were getting out of hand with petty name calling and the like.
  Unfortunately because of the events in Christchurch David was forced to change things to the way they are now. A lot of you didn’t like this for various reasons. This has slowed the debate considerably for some, but it gives them the opportunity to engage brain before speaking, so we had a lot less name calling, etc.
  However, we are now slowly falling back into the tribalism that taints other lefty blogs, especially when the trolls start with their idiotic comments. Just ignore them………

  Maggie Pie – a good question and one that I can shed a little light on.
  
  I was very close to this issue a few years ago and can say that, as a big generalisation, food safety management is linked to the background and culture of the owners and managers.
  
  If people have been brought up and trained in a culture of good practices that generally shows through in their management of food premises – conversely, if people have been brought up and trained in a culture of bad practices (or what we would consider as poor) that generally shows through in their management as well.
  
  It is (contrary to Stiffy’s incorrect assumption) also the reason why we do tend to see ‘Indian’ and ‘Chinese’ food premises featuring more prominently (again as a big generalisation) in the poor food grade publicity by councils. It’s quite common for immigrants, especially Indiand and Chinese, to open food premises once in NZ as a relatively low cost way in to business and can, at times, bring poor food management practices with them – until either they fold, or lift their game.
  
  NZ has among the best food safety practices and management, and regulatory environment, in the world. Others aren’t quite so used to such practices.

The slow moderation does not allow a conversation to flow as there are usually similar comments and points raised that are in the nether world.

The abuse never bothered me as a getter and a giver when needed.

You say ignore the trolls, I say ignore the insults.

Having honest comments about ardern and co edited or deleted is childish in my opinion. After watching “the duck” uttering his foul and insulting comments, I see no reason to not respond when it is appropriate and having a bunch of low intellect trolls infesting this site with comments that promulgate absolute lies I see no reason to restrain myself.

    When does a person become defined as a liar? Is after 1 lie, 2 – 3 or 100?
    
    When did Ivan get the name “Ivan The Terrible”. Was after he did a couple of “terrible” things or was it because he was terrible all the time? Was he “terrible” to his wife and children, his friends, his dog or his horse?
    
    Last week we had, the the famous words of Judge Mahon, ” an orchestrated litany of lies” from ardern all the way down to the lefty interns posting on here.
    
    We also have had the biggest lie foisted on New Zealand by labeling the budget “The Wellbeing Budget” . That lie was so big that nobody actually believed it. Was that lie ardern’s, robertson’s or the coalition’s?
    
    The week before we had the “rape” allegation then when back pedaling both ardern and the duck said we don’t want trial by media. That is a lie, of course they do but only when the narrative is biased their way.
    
    The slow moderation does have a major impact on the flow of the discussion and that is also a fact, not just my opinion. Now if that is the only way that this blog can remain untouched then shouldn’t David, yourself and all members of this blog be outraged that our country has been allowed to descent this far so quickly?

So, what is the issue with Government moving to secure its tax base? Dodging GST by buying offshore is akin to doing ‘cash jobs’ to dodge PAYE. Granted Amazon US has a wider range offered compared with Amazon Aust, but much of the former is from vendors other than Amazon, and they should not be selling outside US unless they play the tax game. Is all part of the international Tax Authorities cooperation to combat evasion through eCommerce.

You are correct in some way but… the cost of collecting this tax in many instances exceeds the tax itself yet we still have to pay the whole amount.

The previous level of $400 was ok but in some instances the “tax” plus “fees” exceeded 15% by a large amount. Is that fair?

I favour the higher limit being retained or even raised a tad. In the past, I have had separate orders held and amalgamated with the GST applied over the whole total. I did not have a problem with that approach but I do object to having the GST applied to the freight cost that I paid to an overseas provider who will be paying their own variant of GST/VAT on the shipping costs.

  And as far as Amazon are concerned, they already collect state sales tax in the US. I think they even do it for out-of-state sales. So collecting GST for stuff going to NZ would be no big deal for their IT systems. I dunno why they went through all the drama of a .au site when they could have just done this.
  
  The current setup here involves a $50-odd straight up fee plus a biosecurity fee plus a Customs entry fee. It’s hard to find myself agreeing with you (you would probably say the same) but this is just bonkers.
  
  If Amazon collected and remitted GST and parcels from them were tagged in some way that would make heaps more sense. I doubt that they would get into the under-invoicing that goes with Aliexpress stuff.

    Food for thought…. Is there a state in the US that has a population of a similar size to NZ that has a different tax structure than elsewhere in the US?
    
    Sales tax in the US is heaps lower

So I see that the Auckland Pride committee has decided that LGBTIP+ are not allowed to talk or meet with Xtians, or else face the DCM. Forget the cynical politics etc., it could have been a positive thing. But no.

This is a good display of compassion, tolerance and above all maturity…..sure it is.

Why on earth any self respecting LGBTIP+ identifying individual would want to associate with Auckland Pride is beyond me.

Finally National have made a complaint to Parliamentary Services to have a enquiry into who knew before Grant Robertson made his statement about the hacking of the budget details.

  1. Her request is to the State Services Commission, not to the Parliamentary Service.
  2. The State Services Commission will not be able to investigate ministerial conduct.
  3. Paula Bennett is right to suspect ministerial dirty dealing though; she is no stranger to that herself.
