    Well, at least I’d like to thing they do.
    
    They likened the technology to sending a nuclear reactor to the 1800’s. The people of the time could see energy being produced , but as soon as they tinkered with it they’d all be killed.

    It’s hard to call it a minority though. In numerous Muslim majority countries, over 50% of Muslims believe radical things. 60-70% of Palestinians believe suicide bombing civilians to defend Islam can be justified. In Pakistan, Nigeria, Jordan, and Egypt, a majority of muslims believe those who leave the religion should get the death penalty.
    
    89% of Pakistanis believe stoning women for adultery is justified. That isn’t even just a majority, that is a super-majority. It’s also above 80% for Afghanistan and Egypt.
    
    Only a minority may actually have the fortitude to act out their beliefs, but that doesn’t change the fact they have a lot of people who agree with them.

Why is it that our Government is more interested in spending taxpayers money all round the Pacific when people have help fund the tax the Government gets can’t be helped for illnesses like cancer. Then after hearing of a couple of mothers having to give birth in their cars because the Government didn’t think it was their Maternity Hospital was needed, so then we have another story hitting the headlines that of two other mothers that gave birth in another Maternity Hospital that they deemed not fit for service. I and properly many other can’t see why taxpayers money is being given to other Countries when people are dying in NZ because we can’t find enough money to pay our nurses and doctors,make our hospitals fit to use and fund drugs to give some a better life. It looks like our Prime Minister and her Deputy are more interested in themselves and how many photo shoots they can get than fund people that have paid tax to see their children grow up.

  There is a genuine problem with the Pacific nations. The Peoples Republic of China is courting them like mad. For example there are AFAIK four embassies in Samoa – NZ, Australia, USA and China.
  So efforts are needed to limit Chinese influence which means giving aid etc. Cannot leave it all to the Mormons to try and keep China at bay.

    Apart from aid, NZ has a diplomatic weapon in immigration.
    
    It could use permanent and temporary immigration quotas as levers on the the Pacific mini-states. Can’t imagine too many Polynesians and Melanesians would prefer to migrate to Shanghai.

Ive not been round much here the last few months; life got busy, the new moderation policy etc etc.

I wanted to impart the news that a month ago my beautiful blond and I tied the knot. With collective kids by our sides, on a beach in Fiji, she made me the happiest man alive. The party was, to say the least, memorable 🙂

There is another life beyond what might seem a crushing blow, when all light seems to have gone from the world. I found I was able to be happy again, and then she walked into my life and we have never looked back.

As for me now, mid 50’s, Im heading for semi-retirement, no more than 30 hours a week, more time for me, the blond, the kids. Im lucky, but then hard work creates its own luck right? Im about to head out the door and ride Rotorua trails for a few hours, kids and the blond with me. After that, lunch at Good Eastern.

Life is pretty damned good. Happy trails people.

  An example could be the people on tv last night whingeing about how damp their homes were.
  I couldnt help thinking of how smoky and uncomfortable their homes apparently were prior to the dreaded “colonization”.

    1) show a screaming baby or toddler driving caregiver to distraction
    2) show caregiver placing baby/toddler in cot and LEAVING room.
    3) show caregiver going to furthest room in house and carefully closing doors in between
    4) show caregiver switching on tv, and relaxing for an hour.
    5) show baby/ toddler fast asleep in cot, having cried him/herself to sleep, but unharmed.

I’d say they are as powerful as ever because when the socially conscious left attempt to introduce forward thinking fairness, it is immediately crushed by the loud right wing dominated media, and business interested in wealth consolidation.

Martin imagines the existence of an “indisputably left wing media”. But anyone listening to 1ZB and its sister ship the NZ Herald could not possibly make that claim with a straight face.

Nearly 10 am and no kiwiblog action. That nut Tarrant really did change things for the worse.

The thing is in the days after the tragedy I was all in favour of restricting firearms. That’s what shock does. But it is not a state conducive to sound public affairs.

Three months on I think the best response, apart from providing the best care for the victims, would have been to change nothing at all. No hate speech laws. No blaming Facebook. No billion dollar gun buy back. No changes to moderation on blogs. Just throw Tarrant into an isolated cell for the next 50 years.

  Agreed. It was panicked ill thought through and ill conceived policy to try and placate people who somehow felt guilty about one foreign individual committing a heinous crime. The best thing to do would have been take a deep breath, write down a few issues and ideas at the time, then look at what you wrote down three months later to see if you still feel about them the same way, and inact those changes accordingly.     Yes, it might be time. I’ve been resisting migrating over there as I know DPF from high school days (that was a while ago!) and I’ve been commenting here since 2006’ish.
    
    Perhaps voluntary migration is his goal? Running a blog like this must be amazingly time-consuming, and having people leave of their own volition rather than closing it down might be a kinder strategy.

      Blogging is hard work. Anyone can do it for a few months, but running a blog over an extended period is a challenge. Keeping Stock lasted seven years, but it took a tool on me.
      
      Quite how DPF has lasted for 14 years now is a mystery. Good luck to Holysheet trying to emulate DPF, but I don’t fancy his long-term prospects.

Fantastic Super Rugby semi-final last night, between arguably the two best teams in the competition. The Crusaders had to pull out all stops, including a dubious knockdown by Sam Whitelock with time almost up, to subdue the Hurricanes.

TJ Perenara was absolutely superb, and both first fives had terrific games. But for me the physical work done by Kieran Read and Dane Coles showed that both are getting back to their best form after injuries, and that bodes well for RWC 2019.

      Sounds to me Auckland rugby’s headed for a fairly quick death. From TV reports, Auckland high school kids prefer basketball to rugby.
      
      A problem for white and Asian boys in Auckland is that Polynesian kids are not only bigger and more muscular, but they mature earlier, which brings an associated growth spurt. By the time the physical gap is less, the white and Asian boys have rejected rugby.

There is no point in bringing in speed limits that people treat with contempt. Long straight Canterbury roads are perfectly safe at speeds in excess of 100. What kills people on those roads are drivers going through stop signs on the minor side roads. So a good defensive driver slows down to 90 as she approaches those intersections, and down to 70 if she spots a vehicle on a potential collision course, watching the driver like a hawke. Then she puts her foot down again. You can’t legislate against stupidity.

  In the case of the Christchurch CBD, the 30 kmh limit is ignored. people drive at 50.
  
  The irony is that if the authorities announced tomorrow that they had got it wrong, and said they would increase it to 40, and could people please comply, I think a lot of drivers would say “fair enough” and you would get a reduction in the average speed in the city.
  
  The problem with lefty council folk is that when they get it wrong they NEVER concede an error. They just double down on the stupidity.

It’s deadline for plastic bags tomorrow, July 1, and Radio NZ reports that the Government is helping shoppers to rat on retailers who keep giving out the bags:

“People would be able to report retailers who continued to hand out plastic bags, but Ms Sage [Eugenie Sage, the Green Associate Environment Minister] said the Ministry [for the Environment] would try to educate shop owners before penalising them.

The Ministry has set up an online form to help shoppers rat on retailers (link below).

From tomorrow, it will be illegal for retailers to hand out lightweight plastic carry bags, including thicker department store bags as well as the biodegradable and compostable options. These include supermarket carry bags and bags for takeaway food and other retail checkouts.

Supermarket produce bags, bin liners and dog-crap bags will still be allowed.

The media are all celebrating the fact that the plastic bag ban goes into effect tomorrow. FFS, what a pointless, virtue signaling exercise. The so-called “single use” plastic bag was a marvelous scientific invention. Strong, thin and, yes, reusable and recyclable. You can’t reuse a paper bag once you’ve got it home – not really. It’s less than useless.

All it does is inconvenience the shopper for no good reason at all. STUPID.
