      I’m afraid not. Tax freedom day was never this late when Clark was PM. Under Key there was a small income tax cut, an increase in GST and numerous other taxes, plus the failure to inflation adjust. Of course the current government will be worse, but we should never have been in this position.

  Kerry McDonald’s last two gigs in private sector directorships have been as the chairman of Opus from listing in 2009 which was a complete failure until shareholders were taken out of their misery by a very generous Canadian company in 2017 and as chairman of Powerhouse Ventures.
  Any one that went on the Powerhouse board had to be completely stupid, or jut greedy for the fees. This shitty little investment company had a ridiculous management cost ratio of over 20% and kidded itself that it needed 6 independent directors even though it had a supposed $20m portfolio (never worth even that in reality). As chairman McDonald has to take responsibility for launching this terrible thing onto the Aussie stockmarket that has seen investors lose 95% of their money in 4 years. I rate him the second worst professional director in NZ.

    Remember the bath Cindy took from the left about her failure to deliver a CGT. That was Thursday prior to Easter. The following Tuesday it was like it never existed and all the media was talking about was her leadership around the CHCH Call.

  Web security is cumbersome and slow. Browsers deal with plain text files–the security comes from keeping them in a locker, similar to credit card info.
  
  Google has to be seen as the arch hacker. Others started out by sending out their “bots”, hacking programs, to surreptitiously collect web site data and that was aggregated into search engines for commercial gain. Now all the data collected is passed on for advertising as well.
  
  The browser is a poor second, it just reads a text file, interprets its instructions and shows those on your screen. A developer can mark an item to be ignored but it is up to the troll bot or its masters what they do with it.
  
  My guess is the new web pages were not on a separate secured server during the helter skelter of the budgetary processes. One phone call and open sesame. Offices throughout NZ would have been excited.

  Lee C- I have worked in various forms of “the media” for the past 45 years and I have never before seen anything like what’s going on now.
  The covering up of negative outcomes relating to Ms Ardern and her troupe of incompetents is a phenomenon of political spin that should be of concern to advertisers and subscribers who are funding it.
  But it isn’t so “journalists” are on a free rein with few checks and balances on their activities.

    When I first saw the article I thought the Molesworth bit might be a subtle likening of Robertson to the character Nigel Molesworth, but too subtle, just the street name after all.

This was also flagged when the Statement Of Proposal went to the Governing Body for approval before it was publicly notified.
    
    “Although the proposal does not prohibit freedom camping in residential streets, the bylaw framework does enable streets where there are problems associated with freedom camping occurring to become prohibited. Indeed, there are some streets where prohibitions have been recommended through the proposal.”
    
    So if it hasn’t been specifically prohibited, people will be sleeping outside your house in any vehicle, without inbuilt facilities and behaving any way they like. Then good luck collecting plenty of evidence of defecation/noise/disturbance etc so that finally some prohibition might be placed. Meanwhile expect possibly dangerous conflict while you collect the evidence.
    
    So this is the Council’s way of dealing with homelessness. Don’t build housing. Don’t at least get people into properly run camping grounds where the owners control behaviour. Just let people sleep in their cars in any street they like, shitting in the gutter.
    
    Yes, that’s the majority opinion in our Council now.

Just left supermarket and Dad, 50 or so,with kids wearing Labour Tee emptied his trolley into car and couldnt be bothered pushing said Trolley 15 mtrs to store it ,leaving it in middle of driveway.

The launch this week of the book Whale Oil understandably put Cameron Slater and his dirty blogging at the centre of attention. But he has been in some cases paid and aided, abetted and used by a number of accomplices.

Someone who has been closely associated with Slater in his sustained attacks on Matt Blomfield is an ex-business associate of Blomfield’s, Marc Spring. If anything he has done more for longer than Slater.

One way Spring has kept attacks going against Blomfield) is his use of many identities in his online activities.

How many identities? That’s hard to quantify, but it’s many. my guess is well over a hundred identities, if not many more.

I identified over 40 in an eight month period just one blog.

There have probably been some here.

Use of multiple pseudonyms is deceptive, and is bad for the many people who legitimately and reasonably use a pseudonym, as id discredits the use of pseudonyms generally.

    Matt Blomfield decided to do something about it after over a hundred posts on Whale Oil over several months. It took him over 6 years, and the attacks continued relentlessly during much of that period) in the courts, but he has done many people a big favour.
    
    If you say people should just ignore them then you have no idea how bad they have been and how many people they have hurt.

        Yes. That sort of thing shouldn’t be ignored, but it can be difficult to stop from happening when abusers are persistent. It can be like whack-a-mole
        
        What happened to you wasn’t acceptable, an accumulation of attacks across blogs, and shouldn’t happen again, but persistent abusers become practiced at beating the system. I understand what it was like for you, I’ve been on the receiving end often enough (too often).
        
        It can be difficult for moderators getting the right balance of allowing reasonably free speech while protecting from abuse. If everyone who someone else didn’t want commenting was banned there would be few left.

  But abuse of pseudonyms should be of wider interest here. It’s presumably one of the reasons why DPF has put more moderation in place.
  
  Use of multiple pseudonyms to try to manipulate discussions and opinion and to try to shut up or drown out opposing views is a problem for most blog moderators.
  
  It’s funny to see exposure of examples of this labelled as hate speech, along with open attempts to abuse the tick system to try to shut down speech some don’t want. But there are far more click links to further details than click attempts to suppress.

  @-D surely you are aware of the origins of this fund? It is known as the Cullen Fund for a very good reason. A backup source of funding in the event they got through the 2008 election with borrowed funding for wannabe investors to “invest. Why do you suppose they were so upset when National suspended further borrowing to “invest” in it?
  Think of the famous Cossack Ad used by National to expose the then Labour Governments true intentions for their compulsory Superannuation Scheme. Complete State ownership being the ultimate objective whereas their continued fiscal failures have them so desperate they need the Cullen Fund to use as a backup.

Can Simon Bridges explain his unhappiness with the “leak” breaking the embargo on his expenses, but why he is crowing now over his breaking the Budget embargo?

Would it not be more useful to voters and the public if Simon could say something sensible about the figures rather than he managed to access them a day or two in advance of being told officially?

That stupidity should indeed, more than anything else, have alerted him to the fact it was not Jami-Lee Ross who spilt Simon’s expenses, but rather someone wishing to take out Ross. Simon still hasn’t figured that out.

But telling us Budget figures a day or two early, tells us fucking nothing we don’t know now officially – except if does reveal National has a certain lack of integrity when it comes to embargoes.
It is what the Budget detail means now it is confirmed that might benefit from some examination.

If anything the Budget shows Kiwibuild’s one great success so far – because the money not being spent on it is making the short term surplus bigger.

There’s a start Simon.

And to put things in perspective – that all this “Wellbeing” crap is actually a bullshit slogan, another one – what of the last Budget was not for the country’s “wellbeing” in comparison to items in this current budget that supposedly are?

  I agree with you. National made treasury look silly and annoyed the government. So what? Their job is to present an alternative budget. Has National committed to reversing any of the government’s decisions apart from the oil and gas exploration ban? Even that is futile. The damage is permanent.
  
  But a small thing. Whether Kiwibuild goes fast or goes slow has no impact on the crown’s operating balance. The 2 billion is capital expenditure.

  “Yesterday the Labour-led Government delivered Budget 2019, and behind all the hype and well-being spin, it’s the same old Labour Party.
  
  Tax, borrow, spend and hope. You just can’t trust them with your money.
  
  Don’t get me wrong, there are a few things in the Budget I can whole-heartedly support. Mental Health is an issue I care deeply about, and we need to get beyond the politics and deliver for the people that need it most. Housing First is also something I support – it was National that started it and good to see the program getting further investment.
  
  But what about the hardworking teachers, health services, housing reform, education and the economy – nothing but barely keeping the lights on. Hardly transformational.
  
  What Kiwis are now seeing is the stone-cold reality of a Labour-led Government, a party that used to represent the interests of those that work hard and want to get ahead, now representing those who don’t work at all.
  
  Let’s break their botched budget down:
  
  – Economic Growth – 4% to 2.6%
  – Debt up by $17 billion
  – Jobs – from +10,000 a month, to now -4,000 this year
  – 13,000 more beneficiaries
  – Hardship grants up $48m in a year
  – Emergency housing need has tripled – and KiwiBuild not mentioned even once
  – Rents up – $50 per week
  – Fuel up – 6 month high – now over $2.20 a litre
  – Electricity prices going up
  – Health funding not keeping up with demand – surgeries decreasing
  – No meaningful increase in funding for essential drugs to save lives – no cancer drugs
  
  Average Kiwis are being squeezed and let down by this Government. Glossy pictures and talk of wellbeing don’t pay the bills, and no amount of good intentions will fill your car up with gas.
  
  The Budget has shown the economy is sharply declining and the Government still has no plan to deliver the economic growth required to pay for their promises.
  
  A National Government that I lead would prioritise Health, Education, Infrastructure and let Kiwi families keep more of what they earn.
  
  New Zealand needs real leadership, everyday Kiwis need a champion, and the economy needs an actual plan.
  
  In less than 18 months there will be a General Election. I’m ambitious for New Zealand and we’ll be ready to go from day one.
  
  I’m counting on your support.

    What infrastructure will they fund and why? What are they going to do about local government fuckery?

    Same with Simon’s budget access – it really did little more than show that it can be done. And in this instance, as I doubt it will ever happen again.
    
    Bridges should have used his heads-up to better refute the Budget’s “wellbeing” crap – which apparently draws the admiration of Richard Brandson – when it is just another bloody ordinary budget like any other, including the last.
    
    So really nothing to do with an arsehole secretly recording a conversation with a friend and colleague and releasing excerpts to the media. He was not actually proven by the PriceWaterhouse Inquiry to have leaked the expenses information.

The word ‘after’ almost implies the death could have been from a different cause. Maybe the police caught him and killed him.. Perhaps a better example is the Herald favourite, driver killed after car crash. I always imagine its a road rage incident.   As of last year there were 79 folks wanting Male to Female reassignment …average cost of operation = $54,000.
  So….around $ 430,000 to cover that lot.

  Total cost for them = $5,720,000
  
  All up… $6,150,000.

  They do it because some landlords refuse to hand over receipts for rent.
  My sis rented a freezing flat in Sandringham yonks ago from an old biddy who did this.
  Legally the flat did not exist, while the owner rented it out for years at maximimum rates.
  Sis was on minimum wage so MSD said they would pay her accommodation supplement after she explained the landlady refused to provide receipts.
  Her power bill was very high and after she left, she realized she had been paying for the landlady’s electricity as well!

Perhaps a bit off topic, but i hope some of you took my advice a couple of months back and put a few ‘Hot X Buns’ in the freezer? Just got a couple out for our lunch, deep fried them in Ricebran oil, let cool, then cut in half and filled with raspberry jam and whipped cream – they taste just like crispy spicy fruit donuts. YUM! My partners absolute fave.

        Yum – pork belly is my fave! If you want the best crackling in the world, you need to get a ‘Pork Prick’ from one of the specialist Chinese shops (Wah Lee in Hobson St have them). Its a small wooden handle thingy with about 30 steel spikes in one end that you prick the pork skin all over with before rubbing the white vinegar and rock-salt on top. This government really does do “PR” like no other.

We’ve just had the “Well-being Budget”. I guess next year it’ll be the “Super-Duper Budget”.

The sad thing is – the budget simply keeps those on benefits locked-in as “welfare slaves” on the “welfare plantation”.
Unemployment has risen by over 11,000 in the past year, and the government’s token efforts won’t change that. They NEED lots of people on welfare. Lots of people **dependent** on them for handouts.

All she has to do is flash her goofy smile and every woman in the country will vote for her.
I’m just waiting for the inevitable announcement that she will have a baby due to be born a month or two before the election. More front-page-of-women’s-mag photo ops.

National are gutless and hopeless. Even if they dumped “Soy-man” Bridges tomorrow, they’re too far gone to be a realistic hope in 2020.

  You underrate our women. Jacinda has not performed as a capable manager which is her primary job.
  She’s very ill prepared to deal with any more economic slowdown which the rest of the world is signaling. They are spending like there’s no tomorrow, which is true for them, but tough on taxpayers who will be paying the bills. They can’t find money for teachers but Shane can buy what He wants.
  Women voters are very sensitive to the quality of housekeeping. Expect a landslide against the COL in 2020. Its happened before.

Am in Hobart. Three people so far have told me what a wonderful PM we have. All women. Each time I asked why they thought so. The answers were vague. One said she was kind. Two said she was young. One said she liked her smile.

Canadian politician reads accused Christchurch mosque shooter’s manifesto at public hearing.

Faisal Khan Suri, the president of the Alberta Muslim Public Affairs Council…explained how (Canadian mosque shooter) Bissonette, the accused Christchurch mosque shooter, and Robert Bowers, the man accused of killing 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018, all shared similarities in that they were influenced by hate from “alt-right online networks”.

He went on to say, “online hate is a key factor in enforcing hate in all forms, and there should be studies into online hate and the effects it has in the offline world”.

Canadian Conservative MP, Michael Cooper disagreed with Suri’s comments, saying: “I take great umbrage with your defamatory comments to try and link conservatism with violent extremist attacks. They have no foundation, they’re defamatory and they diminish your credibility as a witness. You should be ashamed.”

To further his response, Cooper read a passage from the Christchurch mosque shooter’s manifesto on the record.

Sorry Michael. Western conservatism and violent extremist attacks are inextricably linked. Just as Muslim conservatism and violent extremist attacks are inextricably linked.

It’s the conservatism which is the common denominator.

  Coppers outburst was extraordinary in that he chose to attack a witness presenting testimony to a committee hearing regarding online hate speech.
  By quoting a passage from Tarrants manifesto (sic), Cooper was publicly attempting to validate Tarrants ideaology which was his (Tarrant) motivation for murdering 51 people in Christchurch.

  Lol. Cooper was pointing out the hypocrisy of the Islamic speaker on hate speech, given the multitude and decades of radical Islamic hate speech and violence. Nothing else.
  
  And your point on conservatism is misplaced and wrong. It is the conservatives who usually suffer at the hands of deranged “progressive” radicals (Christchurch – a less radical mosque, synagogues, Xtians in Africa, Sri Lanka).

For many years, we have been told that agriculture contributes approximately half of New Zealand’s greenhouse gases. This supposed fact has been seared into the minds of every New Zealander who reads newspapers, listens to radio or watches television.

What very few people understand is that this supposedly simple fact is based on a dodgy assumption that the effects of methane can somehow be turned into equivalent units of carbon dioxide.

I liken it to the silly statement that if you have one carrot and one banana then you have three banana equivalents. The problem with such a nonsensical statement is that carrots have a totally different nutritional profile to bananas in terms of fat, starch, sugars, fibre and various micro nutrients.

Everyone can therefore quickly see that making a global assessment about how many carrots equals one banana is nonsense. It all depends on what nutritional component you are talking about.

  It is high time that NZ farmers fought back at all their critics.
  
  And they could do it really easily if they wanted.
  
  If they could only find a strong leader, and The Federated Farmers have many of good leaders within, and form a Farmers or Country Party and select maybe three or four key electorates and contest the next election, but they would need to get their skates on.
  
  For once MMP would be their friend, we don’t have far to look to see the tail wagging the dog in this Parliament.
  One Key electorate would be Kaikoura.
  A very strong farming based electorate, which is held by National, but currently with a very weak MP.
  
  Other electorates would be in the Mid Canterbury area, strong farming based areas and without a large urban area where the Green vote is minimal.
  
  I would think there would be electorates in the Manawatu and Hawkes Bay areas as well ripe for the picking.
  Get two or three members elected and sit on the cross benches and fight to be heard.
  
  But don’t align themselves to either of the two main parties.
