Donald Trump’s own internal polling has him trailing Joe Biden in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. As somebody currently living in the mid-west, that tracks with what I’m hearing when talking with people at work and socially.

Trump has a group of hardcore fans, but overall he is not popular here. He won these states in 2016 only because people disliked Hillary Clinton slightly more than they disliked him (and a lot of people have decided they were wrong about that). Joe Biden doesn’t have anywhere near the same degree of baggage that Clinton had. Barring some huge scandal coming out he (or basically any Democratic candidate) should win these states easily.

And in his typical classy fashion, Trump’s response to this bad news was to throw a tantrum, firing several polling companies and claiming black is white. “Whah, whah mummy, don’t like the nasty poll numbers. Fake news!”

    I didn’t say Biden had no baggage. I said he had much less than Hillary Clinton, and I stand by that claim.
    
    No question it’s very early, but even so this is not a good starting point for Trump. And one notable feature about Trump’s approval ratings is they’ve changed very little throughout his term. It seems most people have already firmly made up their mind whether they like or dislike Trump, with not many undecideds left. If that’s true, it will make it very difficult for Trump to pull his numbers up to an electable level.

      Do a little research on how Polling has stood historically in previous Elections at this time for those who went on to win.

        You realise the Polling and removing of Polling companies Than was referring to was in March?
        Before the Mueller report came out.
        Trump could certainly lose. He’s a loudmouth narcarcisstic buffoon who polarises people. It’s going to be a tight race. I’m realistic about that.
        But I don’t think Biden will even be the Candidate. His Dem competitors haven’t even started on him yet. No endorsement from Obama is a big question mark.

        Actually, yes I can deny that. Because it completely contradicts all the polling data I’ve seen. One of us is looking at incorrect information, and I’m comfortable with the credibility of my sources.
        
        As for the Mueller report giving Trump some sort of bump, you must be kidding, right? Yes it cleared him of collusion. But on the obstruction charge it all but flat out said he’s guilty, but its congresses role to hold the president to account, not a special prosecutor.
        
        But most of the polling I’ve seen on public reaction to the Mueller report was pretty mixed, and heavily split along partisan lines. Most people chose to focus on the parts of the report that supported what they already believed/wanted to believe. I doubt it changed many people’s mind.

        You’re also looking at Polling which is nationwide- which is IRRELEVANT, given its a State by State contest.
        I look at lots and lots of Polls.
        All agree support from Blacks and Hispanics and Independents has gone up. Job approval too.

      I doubt very much that Biden will be the Democrat’s candidate for President in 2020.
      
      Sure, he’s the front runner now. But historically the front runner at this early stage falls away (for example, at this stage in 2016 Jeb was the front rated Republican candidate and Trump was about 14th of 17).
      
      You have to wait for the field to winnow down to the last few, with the effect that the freed up votes re-allocate across the remaining candidates.
      
      Personally I think it’s time the old stagers like Sanders, Biden and Trump left the field.

      Sort of. There is nothing explicitly sexual – no grabbing butts or boobs, rubbing up again women, anything like that.
      
      But there are images and claims of him being “inappropriately familiar” (standing too close, putting his arm around shoulders or hand on forearms, that sort of thing) in ways that several women have said made them uncomfortable.
      
      Calling this behavior creepy is very much putting a worse-possible spin on it, but Republicans will no doubt try to frame it that way. It’s not clear how much of an electoral liability this will be, particularly given Trump is hardly a saint in his behavior towards women either.

I watch a lot of President Trump (that is his correct title, Than) Despite what you read in the media in this country, (usually sourced from the Washington Post) I have never seen the President throw a tantrum or behave in any manner associated with throwing a tantrum. In my experience he is controlled and eloquent, more so when you consider he doesn’t use an auto cue like Obama did. In fact in the face of provocation from the fake news media, (especially idiots like Jim Accosta) he is amazingly patient and courteous. All lot of readers are going to agree with me looking at the number of down-ticks your comment already has, 15 in 20 minutes.

        Um, shall we start with openly obstructing justice, in plain sight, right now?
        
        Let’s be incredibly generous and say the Mueller report completely exonerated Trump (It didn’t, but for the sake of argument). That would clear him of obstruction in relation to the Russia invesigation. But then since the report was released, Trump has taken multiple actions designed to obstruct congress from fully investigating matters arising from the report.
        
        He has ordered people not to testify before congress.
        
        He has order documents not to be released.
        
        If that is not blatant obstruction of justice, I don’t know what could ever be.
        
        Trump can keep claiming this is a witch-hunt, unjustified, politically driven all he likes. Well, newsflash, a suspect doesn’t get to decide whether they think an investigation on themselves is justified. The constitution says that congress has the lawful authority to oversee the president, and sanction them if appropriate. That doesn’t come with a condition “only if the president feels like it”.

  In principle I would like to see cannabis legalised. However what this article shows is that safe products would require the same regulatory effort that applies to alcohol. However the latter has been built over a century. When you buy liquor in New Zealand you know it won’t send you blind.
  
  So from being sure I was going to support legalisation, I am now leaning towards no. Voting yes would require confidence in the government to get the regulations, compliance, monitoring and enforcement right from day 1. What are the chances of that?

  As someone who lived in a farming community through those years there is no way I could vote for the Labour Party – ever.
  Not going to say what it was really like because I don’t want a storm of justification and derision rain down as is usually what happens when farming (aka export production) “subsidies” are mentioned.
  As for Mr Peters, he ran a very slick PR campaign prior to the last election. Week after week we received two or three media releases which sounded great.

Listening to PriNZess this morning in her interview with Ferguson would have been comical if the matters were not so serious.

The first issue was about Hiscox and his the ANZ Boatrd’s failure to monitor his remineration/expenses – Jacinda was out of her depth and no real clue what was appropriate to say.

There are 2 issues here, the first is the Reserve Bank and its light touch management/regulation of the banking sector – with ANZ being in the spot light twice over its failings and the RB is being lead footed in its handling of the situations as per Kerry MacDonald (former Chair of BNZ). It was clear Ardern doesn’t want to deal with financial matters and she is scared of the corporate sector, and so ducks answering questions about poor governance.

The second topic was “the stolen children”. She said boldly there are 2 problems, being the the number of children abused in NZ and the need to uplift so many children. Her only answers were more money for Oranga Tamariki & they are changing their procedures from 1 July. But…
It’s the same old staff at Oranga Tamariki, and it is the same people abusing children. What are her solutions to stop the abuse.

If people want to really solve the problems, people have got to stop the b*****it and deal with the realities of the situations.

1. It is not colonialism or racism that is abusing the children;
2. It is not colonialism or racism that is getting the perpetrators addicted to “weed”, booze, or “P”;
3. It is not colonialism or racism stopping whanau, iwi, or hapu intervening to stop the violence and abuse.

But….

It becomes colonialism and racism when the state steps in to protect the children, because they don’t deal with the whanau or hapu when children are taken into protection. Sorry, but where were the whanau or hapu in the first place. Because to come to the attention of the state, the situation is already out of control without intervention.

So, let’s stop the b*****it, put your hands back in your pockets (yet more free state funding is not the solution) look at what is happening in your communities and resolve it in a mature way. Because the current solutions will this problem never being resolved, because there is no ownership of the problem which is dysfunctional people having families they are not able to care for.

    It will not help though, in an add for Katheyn Ryan’s show on RNZ this morning, they previewed that she’ll be speaking to Rod Oram about “disappointing manufacturing numbers for the government and what they mean” (her words not mine).

    Double d, I agree with you. This morning Ardern’s message was:
    There are two problems….
    We are fixing it with:
    1. $1billion in the budget; and
    2. We have overhauled the legislation to change the procedures and this kicks in from 1 July.
    
    So, we still have the same organisation (same name & brand), staffed by the same people….who is expecting anything to change?
    
    Then you have the source of the issues, i.e. dysfunctional people who can’t look after themselves, let alone young children. What is really being done about resolving the problems at source, other than lots of words about whana, hapu & iwi?
    
    Until they stop talking b*****it, and really address the problems in Maori communities, the problems of violence suffered by children and families will not go away and we’ll be back here again in the future. And there will be more handouts.

It’s going to come, apparently, from reprioritising expenditure in the sector.

IE: we’re going to gut a few initiatives.

Thing is, what most people don’t realize is that they’ve already done this to pay for the free university. Any further cuts are likely to hurt those most at risk, but in the worst position to object.

    I am not happy about campaigners of any sort visiting schools. Kids are compelled to listen, and are not allowed to argue in an atmosphere of enforced conformity. Any such visit needs to have both sides of arguement being put forth.
    
    This is effectively Greens propagandising and indoctrinating kids on our dime, with forced attendance. Education is learning how to think (critically), not being told what to think by zealots.

    I replied to Mr Cox, who describes himself on his Twitter profile, among other things, as an “Educator”. He hasn’t replied, but someone did who suggested that independent medical evidence was unlikely, because doctors are on the payroll of pharmaceutical companies!
    
    Interestingly, when I did a Google search using the words “medical evidence cannabis harm”, this was the first result on the list, based on data collected from the Dunedin longditudinal study:

    The summary makes interesting reading:
    
    Using cannabis in adolescence increases the likelihood of experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia in adulthood. Our findings agree with those of the Swedish study1 and add three new pieces of evidence. Firstly, cannabis use is associated with an increased risk of experiencing schizophrenia symptoms, even after psychotic symptoms preceding the onset of cannabis use are controlled for, indicating that cannabis use is not secondary to a pre-existing psychosis. Secondly, early cannabis use (by age 15) confers greater risk for schizophrenia outcomes than later cannabis use (by age 18). The youngest cannabis users may be most at risk because their cannabis use becomes longstanding.5 Thirdly, risk was specific to cannabis use, as opposed to use of other drugs, and early cannabis use did not predict later depression. Our findings now require replication in large population studies with detailed measures of cannabis use and schizophrenia.
    
    Although most young people use cannabis in adolescence without harm, a vulnerable minority experience harmful outcomes. A tenth of the cannabis users by age 15 in our sample (3/29) developed schizophreniform disorder by age 26 compared with 3% of the remaining cohort (22/730). Our findings suggest that cannabis use among psychologically vulnerable adolescents should be strongly discouraged by parents, teachers, and health practitioners. Policy makers and law makers should concentrate on delaying onset of cannabis use.
    
    Given that the Greens are suggesting a legal age of 25 for access to cannabis, why is Chloe Swarbrick taking this message to 16-18-year-olds, and even more significantly, why are schools allowing it?

Is the German Government lying when it blames rising anti-Jewish attacks on the “Far Right”.

Hundreds march in the annual annual anti-Israel al-Quds Day demonstration in Berlin with frequent calls to kill Israelis.

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency says: “Some of the incidents documented at the Quds Day march in Berlin have been classified by authorities as forms of far-right anti-Semitism, independent watchdog groups have discovered.”

The JTA adds:

“…the new Muslim anti-Semitism is taboo, as addressing it would only strengthen opponents of immigration,” Krisztina Koenen, a journalist for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and der Welt, wrote in an analysis she published in March in the Hungarian-Jewish magazine Neokohn.

My son goes to a Decile 5 school with a role of about 700 kids.

They ask for donations of $300 per year. I don’t object to paying this. Now the government says that they will pay the school $150 if the school doesn’t ask for $300.

What a deal! We will give you $105000 but only if you forego $210000!

What numpty came up with that! It just goes to show that this government has no idea about the cost of education.

  If more than 50% of the parents pay $300 the school will no doubt choose to stay with the status quo.
  There are numerous schools who don’t currently ask for a donation, or maybe $50 or so, because the parents are struggling.

I am astounded. Most minor recidivist criminals get what? 5-10 ‘chances’ with home detention, fines, community service etc before being sent to jail. This sentence is higher than for most serious assaults, dishonesty offences etc where there are actual victims, vs this where people have been offended but no-one has been actually hurt or victimised. Judiciary is unhinged/virtue signalling on this one.

    The judge who sentenced Arps to 21 months prison was Judge Stephen O’Driscoll, who two years ago sentenced to supervision a youth who planned a Christchurch terrorist attack “for Allah” in February 2018. The youth planned to ram a car into a group of people and then stab them until the police killed him. He went through with a threatening and violent incident but “decided not to hurt anybody because he did not have the means to kill enough people”, the Crown reported when he pleaded guilty.
    
    The Muslim youth had monthly monitoring sessions with Judge O’Driscoll. Reports of these revealed he had been undertaking golf lessons and part-time study for NCEA. At one monitoring session, through his counsel, he invited Judge O’Driscoll to a barbecue.

The Provincial Growth Fund is wasting taxpayers’ money by supporting projects that would go ahead anyway.

The latest example is the new Kerikeri Airport terminal, which received $1.75 million from the Fund.

However, this was completely unnecessary, given the owner (Far North District Council) had already committed to the project before the Fund was launched.

The stand-off between the country’s big banks and the Reserve Bank governor, Adrian Orr, continues with Adrian Orr apparently unhappy about not being kept in the picture over the departure of the ANZ Bank’s New Zealand branch chief executive.

However, the core of the row remains the Reserve Bank’s plan for trading banks to lift their capital ratios in New Zealand.

Michael Reddell, at his blog, Croaking Cassandra, has been challenging Orr, and today Reddell looks at an article by ANZ researchers recommending what the Reserve Bank might do in the next recession.

As a layman, I find the possibility of negative interest rates to be “interesting” in the old Chinese philosophers’ sense.

Reddell laments:

” … there has been nothing done, no debate held, no analysis published, on dealing with fact that at present people can convert limitless amounts into hard currency, and will do so at some point once interest rates on other instruments (wholesale ones in particular) are substantially negative.”

The ANZ researchers’ article:

Minister of Health supports legalising weed, in spite of overwhelming research on the health issue related to the substance. That’s just great. Associate Minister of Transport supports weed despite having charge of road toll. Proposer of bill to legalise weed speaks to teenage children in schools about legalising weed. Not a good day for mature leadership from the government.

Judith Collins did a superb interview on Q & A last night. Dealt with the two tricky issues – National’s track record on housing, polls/leadership – with ease.
By the end of the interview she had Jack Tame eating out of her hand.

? Good post by the Point of Order blog’s team on the interview by Corinn Dann of David Seymour on Red Radio’s Morning Report.

Dann suggested ACT’s stand on free speech might attract fascists and Nazis to join the ACT Party.

Seymour said he was batting for the great number of New Zealanders who believe that free expression is important as a fundamental value of our society that the current government is not taking seriously enough.

“The price of a free society is that people will sometimes say rude and offensive things.”

  His stance on Freedom of Speech is the main reason I am thinking of voting for Act. Their policy on Guns and Climate are also persuasive. If that makes me a Nazi and a Fascist, so be it, however, I think it makes the left look desperate.
