Captain Mainwaring

Does anyone know how Julie-Anne Genter, Minister of Cycling, is getting on with her enquiry into petrol prices?
We did a weekend trip from Wellington to Rotorua and back. 91 is around $2.30.9 in Wellington, we filled up at Gull Levin on the way up for $1.98.9 and at Mobil Taihape on the way back for $1.95.9. (There is now a small Gull station in Taihape). We also noticed that BP Rotorua was $1.95.9.
It’s amazing how much flexibility they have when Gull comes to town.
So Julie, How much longer is it going to take you to get to the bottom of this, as I think I already did?

    There seems to have been a spike in multi fatality high speed crashes over the last year. Higher traffic volumes, including from tourism, and bad driving.
    
    Surely the police could blitz unlicensed drivers and unwarranted cars?

    The man at Mobil told me that Gull arrived in October and suddenly everyone else in town had to fall into line.
    Gull Taihape is even cheaper at $1.92.9 but I don’t get the 6c discount I get with my Mobil card.

      I have been using the Foxton Mobil for the last few years.
      I can go to Wellington, tootle about on that tank, then return to Foxton and fill up for the journey north.
      There is also a Waitomo in Foxton so that helps but more fiddly to use in self service.
      There is a proposed Waitomo for Tinakori Road, Wtn and also Upper Hutt.
      Waitomo is supplied by Mobil.
      
      I have used the Mobil Waharoa for 30 plus years.
      It is an easy stop right by the main Hgy 27 and current prices are excellent.
      I tend now to fuel up on the way back to tax-non-haven Auckland and fill a 10l can as well.
      I believe there is a Gull at Matamata that may affect price.
      
      Levin has a Gull plus an Allied to the South.
      When in Rotorua recently there is much competition.
      All good for the consumer.

        Gull on the Rotoiti road out of Rotorua is incredible value. $1.24 for diesel less a discount! Best I have seen. (mobil in Tokoroa also pretty good).

  Funny you should post this as I was just thinking the same.
  
  Just had a very pleasant week in New Plymouth. FWIW there’s a new brew bar there, Shining Peak, well worth a visit if any of you happen to be up that way.
  
  Anyhoo, fuel there is in the region of 25~30c cheaper than Karori in Wellington where I live.
  
  The pricing strategy of fuel companies seems to be, ‘what can we get away with?’, combined with watching each others like hawks on any price movement.
  
  The problem with petrol is that it’s a grudge purchase, and there is no differential between providers, no matter how they try and talk up their product, except price.
  
  I’ve never believed that there is a cartel as such, it’s essentially what can we gouge.

  You can bet the cannabis referendum will be tacked onto the 2020 general election at any cost for Greens and Labour, irrespective of how the question will be posed, as they will see it as a reason to vote for the 18-23yr olds who normally vote left. This referendum is about votes for the left as opposed to the outcome of cannabis smoking.

  The comments on Hosking’s post on drugs is filled with people citing the Portugal drug example. Legalising drugs is claimed to bring down the suicide rate. But my question is what impact did the $78 Billion dollar bailout to Portugal have on their suicide and drug use statistics. It turned their economy around and maybe bought optimism and hope and work and financial success. Suicide is not uncommon when their is businesses failing and no jobs. Maybe a stronger economy is what’s helping Portugal. And Second point is price and taxation, Portugal has really cheap cigarettes ($3.89 pounds) and pint of beer ($1.63 Pounds ), so maybe their young people are choosing these drugs when they are socialising instead of the harder stuff. In NZ where $25 dollars for a pack of cigarettes, and $9.50 for a beer at a bar how does that compare to cannabis, synthetics or Meth. So excessive taxation in NZ means their isn’t as much differential in cost between harder drugs and lesser drug.

Interesting doco on RT last night about the Japanese *Yakuza*. (What I didn’t know was that the word means……”good for nothing”)

The Japanese government and police have really stamped down on the *Yakuza* in recent years, denying them access to things like bank accounts, credit cards, their ability to rent an apartment, even putting pressure on schools not to accept their kids. They can be stopped by Police for any reason and held for interrogation as long as they deem necessary. No wonder gang numbers have fallen so dramatically in recent years.

Shame we can’t be as tough on the ‘good for nothings’ that create havoc in this country.

  Every “patch” is earnt by the wearer! by nefarious deeds!
  
  Patched members then can act as butter does not melt in their mouth, as now they have the future willing new members doing things, whatever it takes, to do the more illegal things, or even to take the rap for them.
  
  So removing the patch in some social situations, is just a pretence, of just how nice a guy they are. And we are expected to white wash and totally believe that, while the leopard regains his spots, the patch is slipped back on later.

  In a homogenous society where the majority have similar values, it’s easier for the State to “do the common-sense thing”.
  However, the trouble with knowing what your national identity is and how a “model citizen” should behave means that Japanese society can come down hard on people who don’t really fit in. (Think of NZ society in the 1950s.)
  It’s a double-edged sword.
  At least Japan wants to continue to be Japanese (good luck with the demographics, boys and girls…)

When are the people of NZ going to wake to this Labour Coalition especially over their lies and frauds that they used to get elected. DHBS are already millions in the black after National was blamed for nine years of neglect and getting worse by the day and instead of fixing it like they promised and eighteen months into this first term of Government we have continued strikes and the same excuses that it’s all Nationals fault without any ideas to fix it. Lie after lie from a Government that promised a Cannabis referendum that would bidding with leaked documents saying different. This Coalition was formed to get rid of Capitalism and we have found out it is all about inqiries and forums select to make better policy but instead has made a lot of those selected to make new policy richer as very few have been excepted. Time to make a slogan about a Government that is weak kneed,well out of the depth boardering on corrupt and blood hopeless but the promises keep getting wheeled out watered down and put away for 2020 to con those that vote for them again.

    Implementing a paywall leads to an immediate loss of advertising revenue for media providers as people like you and I completely stop visiting. Their hope is that potential new subscription revenue will surpass the certain ad revenue loss, thereby helping them back to profitability.
    
    Despite their claims of ‘Premium’ and ‘Quality’ journalism, the Herald will have spent the last ten years trying to avoid needing a paywall by reducing the cost of their journalists/staff, and doing so at the cost of reporting quality.
    
    Paywalling doesn’t seem to have worked elsewhere with readership generally declining, and many providers resorting to begging to viewers on every non-premium page. The Guardian is a great example of that.

Pike River: Finding cause of first explosion more important – widow
As the Police find a conveyor belt inside the mine did not cause the second explosion, Anna Osborne says “There would never have been a second explosion if the first one hadn’t happened. So for me, the most important thing at this stage is to figure out actually what happened in that first explosion.”
She’s urging anyone with evidence relating to the mine disaster to come forward – Newshub

Do you need evidence?
The Royal Commission Report says to me there was all sorts of negligence going on in terms of management and oversight of that mine. I would have thought this could have gone to court at any stage.
Bernie Monk – Oh very much so. We don’t have to go down the mine to get evidence. I’m wondering what more evidence they want. That mine was in an explosive range 48 times in the 7 weeks leading up to it.
They continuously let our men go in there to their death and we don’t need to go down that mine to get that evidence – it’s already in the Commission. – Newshub

Does the tone of each of these items suggest it is intended to still instigate legal proceedings over Pike River, which the public at present would seem to believe is a possibility only if new evidence is found in accessing and searching the drift, but not a definite intention otherwise.

What is the intention in this matter? Is a new Pike River court case anticipated or not?

  So where were the mine’s safety personnel? Why did they not demand a safe working environment? Where was the EPMU, the union representing many of the workers? Who was the head of the EPMU at the time, and why, after the explosion, did that person say there was nothing unusual about Pike River mine?

    Good questions, but I’m betting you wont see any answers from the MSM as they will be under instruction not t ask them.
    I note from recent comments from the ‘Family spokespeople, Andrew Little and the Pike CEO that they are preparing for no re-entry, but at least they tried not like the horrible National government.

    Extraction fan switches, switch cabinets etc
    Why was this mine passed as safe BEFORE it extracted it’s first Kg of Coal?
    as TS said where were the safety officers, where was their report to the manager about safe working conditions?
    Did the manager over ride the safety officers report? or did the safety officer not do his job?
    If the manager did over ride the safety office, why did the workers go anyway, surely they would have complained to the union re bullying?

      And who was in Government when they were instructed to build the only uphill mine in the world in order not to disturb the wildlife in the National Park, and then install only one ventilation shaft?
      It was a methane bomb from day one and the guilty parties are Helen Clark’s Government and the Greens.
      Then National were the bad guys when it blew up on their watch.

    Surely the mine’s Health and Safety Manager should be implicated of further action is taken ?
    He sadly lost one son and narrowly the second escaped. Surely, as he told the Royal Commission, that he thought the mine was not safe, or words to that effect, he still allowed his sons to go down the mine.

  The issue with Caster Semenya, is that we simply do not know her status, with regards to gender. Is she genetically male, with all the athletic advantages that this brings, or a genetic female who just happens to have high testosterone levels.
  
  She has undergone a gender test, and while the results are confidential, it has been reported that she is intersex, and if her Gender Status puts others at an unfair advantage, then the IAAF is in a no win situation. The rules in this situation as applied are only applicable to athletes with an XY chromosome, so we can conclude that Semenya is in that category, otherwise the rules she is disputing would not have been applied to her.
  
  Laurel Hubbard is in the same category, it’s just that while Hubbard’s situation is one of choice, Semenya is one of circumstance. The main issue is to do with fairness and to the integrity of Women’s Sport in particular. It should be noted that there are no cases (that I am aware of) of a female to male transgender athlete competing in a high level male environment.

    There’s a real dilemma and issue with Semeya, I believe it is correct that she is genetically male and suffers from AIS (Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome) but not from CAIS, CAIS adds “complete”.
    
    There is a spectrum of AIS disorders from very mild to CAIS. People who suffer from CAIS (and I’ve personally known one) are pretty much stereotypically female with some differences – very little body hair and taller than average as examples. They develop as female and look female, probably don’t have much if any advantage as they produce testosterone but cannot process it at all (that’s the C part).
    
    Those who are not CAIS but on the upper end of the spectrum though can develop as females but as they can process some testosterone they will tend to look and develop some more masculine attributes. Semenya is probably Stage 3/4 so presents as female but has definite muscular and skeletal development that si more typically male. As noted above the actual presentation of symptoms is rather variable – I believe there are several genetic defects that can interact in differing ways. So one can be apparently male but have a more typically female body type (talking generally) or apparently female but distinctly masculine and every combination in between.
    
    The real drawback is that we have a binary sports classification – Open and Female. And the restricted class exists because there are biological differences and if we only had one class women would never be able to compete, yet there exists natural crossover types – these AIS people being one of them. There aren’t enough to have a separate class and anyway as the spectrum is broad how would you classify, and yet they can outclass normal genetic females without being fully competitive with normal genetic males.
    
    There is possibly no simple answer that satisfies logic – unless ones intent is to destroy women’s sports altogether. The current compromise is awkward and sort of unfair, but is probably as good as we get.

    If Semenya is permitted to continue competing with testosterone levels well above normal female levels, then how can other female athletes compete fairly? You only need to observe Semenya’s muscle bulk to see the obvious advantage she is taking in comparison.
    
    What if IAAF decided that any female athlete could take testosterone supplements to equal the level that this fellow competitor wants to compete against them has in her system? At the moment they would be disqualified. So, no level playing field, testosterone bulking advantage allowed for one competitor only, others disqualified for measuring up.
    
    It seems to me that if the new rules are cancelled … end of womens’ Olympic contests.

Israel Folau apparently disagreed that Tasmania should allow citizens to declare on their birth certificates something other than the sex they were born, and tweeted his own comment – that “Those that are living in Sin will end up in Hell unless you repent. Jesus Christ loves you and is giving you time to turn away from your sin and come to him – and added a quote from the Bible and a “summary” graphic.

It was only the graphic that mentioned homosexuals, second in a list of eight “sins”, and it was the media that picked them out and gave it prominence. Not the variance, emulations, wrath, envyings or revelings, some of which rugby fans do display in abundance, but the homosexuals alone.

Is it slightly incredulous that Israel Folau now faces the issues he does, and Rugby Australia, basically because of the very selective reporting of the media.

And ‘Kids are killing themselves’: NRL’s first openly gay player Ian Roberts blasts Israel Folau, naming young people and vulnerable people, kids in the suburbs, who are dealing with their sexuality.
“[They’re] confused, not knowing how to deal with it, these type of remarks… can and do push [kids and] people over the edge.”
Largely too, are they not, the target of the media?

      It is unusual though, first KD winner to be disqualified and a pretty marginal call. Three year olds are pretty raw runners and tend to get a lot of leeway on shifting their ground when running. That said, they did move out and impede another runner even if that runner wasn’t in a close finish and it was some way from the post.

If white New Zealanders pointedly question being called “pakeha”, could they be guilty of “casual racism”?

That’s one conclusion that might be taken from an ethnic-Indian adviser’s comments to the Christchurch City Council.

First, the background:

Ekant Veer, is a lecturer in Canterbury University’s Department of Management, Marking, and Entrepreneurship. (Social sciences have invaded the academic business disciplines. Veer was given a medal as the university’s teaching medal for 2017 – perhaps that’s why the Christchurch Press hails him as a “prominent academic”).

Veer two years ago helped write for the Christchurch City Council a “multicultural strategy”.

Last Friday, Veer, in the words of the Press, made a “representation” after at a council hearing after a call from ethnic groups for $2 million of ratepayers’ money to fund a multicultural centre. Veer recommended the council translate summaries of its major decisions translated into other languages “to be more inclusive”.

The Press reports Veer also said: “I think you all know that we have got an an election coming up in council and that election rates and election turnout rates are not fantastic.”

He’s correct that the heavily squeezed ratepayers, mostly whites, tend to ignore council elections.

Second, the “Pakeha” comment:

After the council meeting, Veer tweeted that a woman who had been at the council hearing thanked him for his submission, but then accused him of being racist for using the word, “Pakeha”, alleging this was “offensive” and that she knew better than Veer about the word’s meaning because she was born in New Zealand (Veer was born in Britain and came to NZ at age 15).

In the newspaper printed report, Veer says the woman alleged that “Pakeha” meant “long white pig” and “fleas jumping off your back”. She told Veer he needed to recognise that his language offended her.

Veer said of the incident that it it was “an example of the sort of stuff that many people face on a regular basis.”

“She wasn’t being necessarily aggressive or angry, but it definitely was a sentiment of saying, ‘I was born here, you were not’. That’s a little bit of prejudice there.”

    The definition /usage/discussion runs for 3 pages (567-570)

    Maori in common with other Pacific people need a word to distinguish their ethnic kin from outsiders. Pakeha has come to fill that role in NZ. It origins are uncertain. It’s not intended as derogatory.
    
    In Samoa palagi or papalagi is applied to foreigners likewise. The name explained as from ‘burst from the sky’.

  It seems to me that the term pakeha, like many other ethnic descriptions, is generally a neutral one, but can be used pejoratively if that is the intent of the person using the word.
  But reading the intent of someone else can be difficult, as this woman demonstrated. Further, it seems she went even further by claiming to know that her interpretation of the word was superior becasue she was born in NZ.

      I’m guessing you’re not much of a rugby follower and might be a little too young to recall the furore around Paul Henderson in 1995. Here’s how it went:
      
      Henderson was an honest journeyman. The bridge of his nose would get cut all the time and he’d bleed a lot, he was one of those blokes who gave his all but would never have the star quality to be a regular AB.
      
      Because of his popularity he was the obvious choice for captain in the Dirt Tracker’s match against Japan at RWC, where Simon Culhane went crazy.
      
      Normally NZ rugby does not afford test status for matches against minnows, unfortunately IRB (now World Rugby) rules dictate that every RWC match has test status. Ergo, Paul Henderson is a legitimate All Black test captain off of a 145-17 drubbing by the Dirt Trackers, to the consternation of the NZ rugby public.

    The best info I’ve seen said that the aircraft suffered some sort of failure straight after take-off and returned. It aborted the first landing attempt and touched down very hard on the second – it was overweight for landing and possibly wasn’t able to go around again. It bounced hard twice, the main gear collapsed, and yes, that probably ruptured tanks that started the fire.
    
    There’s stories that it was supposedly on fire and/or was struck by lightening, but no proof of that. The initial go round strongly suggests no onboard fire. The initial reports that mention the lightening strike also first said that all the passengers escaped – and that was definitely not true so I would doubt the accuracy of that report.
    
    It is also said that a number of people couldn’t get out the two forward slides because people were trying to take their carry on luggage with them and this slowed the evacuation down.

Just a quik update on the ducks. Ive only just finished plucking the first one which i will cook for tonites dinner. My partner decided to hang all the others off the shed rafters for a few days. He reckons aging them will give the meat a lot more flavor and i wont need to dip them in hot water as the feathers should just fall out. Currently sorting out a really nice recipe – will update the group again tomorrow on how things went 🙂

Ducks arrived a couple of days ago on my garden pond.
Last year hubby decided to feed Daisy, Donald & Daisy’s rapist…

So we ended up with about 17 mallards that would fly in for breakfast (morning t, lunch, afternoon nibbles and dinner)….

Daisy & Donald began to be a bit put out and learnt to hang around late in the evening for their special feeding before departing for the night.

I have a feeling the ducks will be on a starvation regime down at our pond this year.

Leave was restricted to the question whether the proviso was properly applied, in other words whether the Court of Appeal was wrong in saying that the evidence, in the absence of the inadmissible mRNA, was enough to convict, or whether the fact that the mRNA was before the jury meant the trial was unfair.     IHC is a hoax but the defence got stuck with it. Purity of the alleged stain material is at the heart of the crown case now, so why was there an unidentified woman’s dna and skin flakes found embedded in allegedly pure CNS?
    Unidentified finger prints where the crown alleges Lundy staged the break in, unknown male dna and cloth fibers under all victim fingernails, show that it was someone else. The proviso was applied to handwave all this away, so all is under the microscope now. I don’t see why you don’t get the point, it was not Mark Lundy, and the killer should be arrested and tried.

  An extremely limited appeal NSF, limited to the CoA’s application of s 385(1) of the Crimes Act 1961. The appeal will not address the admissibility of the forensic evidence which twice convicted Lundy. There is no good reason for a man to have brain tissue from his murdered wife on his clothing.

      A fail for Lundy’s defence team. The Supreme Court has specifically declined to hear that aspect of the appeal:
      
      The applicant’s challenge to the reliability and admissibility of the IHC evidence was rejected by the Court of Appeal after detailed consideration of the matters raised by the applicant, which necessarily impugned the evidence given by the experts called by him at the trial. We do not see sufficient prospects of success in the argument that the applicant wishes to ventilate again in this Court to justify a further
      appeal on this issue.

Trade War On! Trump announces will increase tarriffs on 200Billion in goods from 10 to 25%, and will impose them on another 325Billion in goods soon on top of the 50billion in goods already attracting 25% tarriff. By my reckoning that is $625billion of imports affected. Chinese markets down strongly as a result.

Will be hard for Xi to back down.
