With two months to go before the recalibrated target 300 Kiwibuild homes to be delivered by end June, the official Kiwibuild site has been updated. The Kiwibuild Unit is going to be very busy next few weeks. Alternatively ‘recalibrated; will become ‘aspirational’.

Those of us concerned about the gravy train known as the Treaty of Waitangi could do no better than to read “One treaty, One nation” by Don Brash, Hugh Barr etc.

It notes that in 1984 the decision was made at a Hui in Ngaruawahia to investigate Treaty claims going back to 1840.

Deputy PM Geoffrey Palmer said with an astonishing lack of foresight that he “did some research on the outstanding greviances and it did not appear that looking into them would open a can of worms and the claims may take a decade to deal with, that it would cause some anguish but would be worth it in the end.”

Since then we have had transfer payments of over $3B to Maori interests including top up payments to Ngai Tahu and Tainui of over $400M. There is no end in sight with claims continuing to pile up including Maori claims to the new 5G network! Ngapuhi have not yet settled, which will probably be the biggest claim.

How long will you the NZ taxpayer put up with this? We have been one nation and one people for the best part of 200 years. When are we going to cry out enough?

Because here’s the thing. Unless we stop this, it will go on forever. Maori interests will have every incentive to go back to the Waitangi tribunal in perpetuity. This should be an election issue IMHO.

    No need to worry.
    The Maori Council has complained to the Human Rights Commission that Brash and co are inciting ‘hatred and violence’.
    But we can be assured the Commissioner will treat them fairly. After all the Commissioner will be steeped in NZ tradition and history and be prepared to accept different views, uh oh….

  Only last week a survey compiled by Massey Uni for secondary schools, as the first question, asked about my kids Ethnicity

  etc
  etc
  
  When there is no option to choose New Zealander you know the separatism, discrimination, racism and eventual segregation is well entrenched

  Scott: Quite so…Palmer is without question the biggest goose in the law in New Zealand – just as he was the biggest goose in parliament.
  
  Here are just two of his fuckups: 1) Section 9 of the SOE’s Act which says that “Nothing in this Act shall be inconsistent with the principles of the Treaty…” He told the Labour cabinet of the day that that section was “meaningless window dressing” and wouldn’t change anything. Instead it set off a train of litigation by Maori interests which shows no sign of ending; 2) He recommended release of the French “Rainbow Warrior” saboteurs to Hao Atoll to serve out the remainder of their 10 year sentences, saying he was confident the French would honour their undertakings to hold them there. The pricks were back in France within 18 months.

  The Waitangi tribunal has absolutely no incentive to bring the claims to an end. Too much money for the Judges and Lawyers who have probably been paid more than the 3B over the nearly 40 years.

  That was right and fair, because Maori invented radio. Right now Maori academics and sympathetic white anthropologists are scouring oral history for more proof of this, ready for a 5G heist.

Interesting that none other than Hone Harawira displays a rather more mature approach to Brian Tamaki’s Man-Up prison rehabilitation programme than others who simply resort to personal invective and tell Tamaki to ‘eff off’ or ‘eff up’! Harawira says that he has seen first hand that the Man Up programme can reduce violence in repeat prison offenders and calls for a study to analyse its effectiveness.

As someone who generally has no time for Harawira I admire the fact that in this case he hasn’t simply delivered a knee- jerk response, as others have done, but is prepared to give the programme a chance. Don’t shoot the message just because you dislike the messenger.

Good on Harawira, for once.

  I also thought he made a well reasoned argument but I cannot understand why tamaki is wanting funding from the government to fund his programmes. Surely he should be talking to the well heeled iwi group after all, he is working to improve maori outcomes and aren’t the cash settlements given to maori also meant to improve maori outcomes?

If it is true that Nationals internal polls say Winston and his party are on 1% according to Simon Bridges yesterday in Parliament while attacking the laziness of the NZ First Leader, could that be the reason Winston has agreed a deal with the Greens on climate change and dairy stock methane emissions. Does Winston believe he can take votes off Labour and the Greens to remain in Parliament or is this his last chance to create get revenge on National voters and farmers.

    The report from the ICCC on changing NZ to a 100% renewable energy supply will either have been reviewed/revised from what was published early last month or it will never see the light of day without very precise OI Requests. This is because the draft findings last month were telling Shaw that a 100% renewable energy supply for NZ by 2035 is unaffordable and will require significant price hikes in the cost of power to consumers and industry. Something that would be political suicide. So is James brave enough and going to be honest with New Zealanders?

        Hydro dams aren’t for ever. They silt up over time.
        
        The Clyde dam mistakes included overlooking it is on a fault line that made it susceptible to an earthquake collapsing river banks up-river and sending down a big wave that could sweep over the dam and perhaps wash away the power house below. This has been partly remedied by expensive work on the river banks.
        
        Another error was the dam’s lack of water storage. It’s mostly run of the river. Poor water storage is a feature of most of NZ’s hydro electric dams. The big, deep valleys that are a feature of a hyro-power country like Norway are scarce at suitable NZ dam sites. That’s why we need gas or coal-fired stations as back-up for our hydro storage (as well as to manage peak demands).

(she will probably spend the next 11 years protesting). What on earth is all this propaganda doing to the minds of these kids. How many will end up committing suicide – it is nothing but child abuse.     Greens are ill-informed nut-jobs, but as an expert on energy matters I am sure now that we are going to see vast uptake of PV/battery systems and electric vehicles for reasons of pure (lowest cost) economics over next 10-20 years.
    
    PV is already cheap enough, In US it is being sold at USD$0.03/kWh for new utility scale plants undercutting NZ’s wholesale electricity rate of ~$0.08/kWh.
    
    The last hurdle was batteries, but they have now hit $US100/kWh and will continue to drop (due to manufacturing learning curves), with industry leaders predicting $50/kWh by 2025. It will soon be cheaper to go off grid, and specialist finance/installation companies will rise to enable this. Also electric vehicles will become (for almost all users) cheaper than petrol within 6-7 years.
    
    So ignore enviro-nazis, and just let the market do its thing and we will end up almost entirely renewable in 20-30 years anyway.

        True. Or maybe the monopoly that is Vector/transpower magically discovers that it is possible to be more efficient and competitive, once they have competition.
        
        About 2/3 of household electricity price is distribution, and I suspect that batteries charged at substations and driven out to households (autonomous electric vehicles) will ultimately undercut the cost of that, making last-mile grid uneconomic. We might even end up trading between households (cheaper in $/kW to cover your whole roof in PV than just part of it)

My partners been staying down at his parents Waikato farmhouse in readiness for Opening Day. He called about an hour ago to say “the omens were really looking good”. When he got up earlier and pulled back the curtains he couldnt beleive his luck – there were 2 Parrys sitting on the swiming pool. Quietly grabbed his gun and gave them both barrels out the window. Only problem is theyre going to have to replace 2 or 3 of the terracotta coping stones.

I am interested to her the distress brought on people who are being asked to pay more Insurance Premiums.
Over 40 years ago household insurances charged what is called risk base where every house was rated and charged on a number of factors based upon what was know a tariff book – where every known factor was determined and a premium was built up.
Competition knocked this on the head. In 1980 there were 32 Fire & General Insurance providers trading in New Zealand. Open policies covering all sorts of add on risks were thrown into the mix to get market shares.
Following the tragic earthquakes those Insurers who were left found that their liabilities were far in excess of what they thought – eg AMI. Their wholesalers – Reinsurers, were astounded at the volume of collective claims they received far in excess of what they were advised. So back to risk assessment charging – ie those with the highest risk will have to either pay more or retain more of the risk – like San Francisco where earthquake cover is often not attainable or a high excess – 20% say.
But in recent years the threat of Global Warming has been thrust right into the front line – so an additional risk factor is now highlighted and has to be taken into more serious consideration.
Previously this was not really considered relevant.
Government taxes (GST, EQ Commission -no more Contents cover, and increasing Fire Service Levies) are also an important cost factor further adding to increase premiums.
So higher International wholesale costs for the world market -not just New Zealand, and the to diminishing local market which is now very small will unfortunately put up costs of cover.

  I do not know what Wellington’s left wing mayor is hoping to achieve with an insurance ‘forum’. There are suggestions all the time that the government should intervene in insurance to stop ‘discriminatory’ behaviour when setting premiums. The problem here is people who would pay lower premiums but for government intervention would simply insure offshore and no doubt companies and brokers would facilitate this.
  Seems the only other option is for the government to do a ‘Kiwibank’ (which replaced the former POSB) and set up ‘Kiwicover’ (in place of ‘Government Life’ and ‘State’ which were sold off). The government would need to decide whether to off-load the risk on to Swiss re-insurance gnomes or to carry the re-insurance risk itself. And then the problem with any government insurer intent on premium ‘equality’ is other companies will ‘cherry pick’ customers. This happened with Southern Cross Health Insurance where the young effectively subsidised the old in its initial years of operation, then competitors entering the business cherry-picked their young customers, forcing Southern Cross to increase premiums for its older customers resulting in much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

But some of the hyperbole and hysteria I see in news articles and social media posts on this topic is downright alarming.       Milankovitch cycles. Due to orbital precession the solar flux on northern latitudes increased above necessary threshold and led to melting of icesheets, same as for previous 20-30 cycles of glaciation.
      
      More interesting (and unknown) is what caused the temperature spikes of the Minoan, Roman, Medieval and now Modern Warm periods at ~1050 year intervals. Some large Natural cycle at play that is likely responsible for much of current warming.

  Regarding Ms O’Brien’s lack of objectivity … as it makes no sense I can only conclude that JLR “setup” Bridges in one of his secret recordings in which JLR said something about her (be it derogatory or sexist) and Bridges possibly didn’t give a “PC” response.
  
  I mean how would I know, I don’t know of course, but it’s the only thing that makes a little bit of sense because as we know as facts JLR was making secret recordings of Bridges and was passing them on to Tova O’Brien. From that point on the normally objective O’Brien has become incredibly partisan and personal in her attacks on Simon Bridges. Mind you perhaps either that or someone else in National is still feeding her anti-Bridges stories, which is also a possibility.

    Dr Hartwich of the NZ Initiative certainly praises Mr Twyford’s speech, as referred to by Mr Pavletich. Or was it his speechwriter, with Mr Twyford not exactly covering himself in glory — we assume —- when challenged by smart and experienced attendees. Wind the clock back about three years and this is exactly the same conclusion National came to.

  This was always going to be the likely outcome. Pike River mine is obviously still volatile and unstable, and God help the government if any person was injured or worse in a body recovery effort.
  
  The budget for the Pike River Re-entry Agency is around $35m; I guess today’s news will silence those who still bang on about John Key wasting $26m on the flag referendum, which incidentally, was also Labour Party policy in 2014.
  
  I suspect the delay will be lengthy now, and I predict there will come a time when Labour too accepts that Pike River will never be safe enough for human re-entry. Having raised the families’ expectations, Labour and NZF have made a rod for their own backs.

Footage of Queensland One Nation leader Steve Dickson during an alcohol-fuelled strip club romp, in which he groped a stripper and made offensive comments, has shocked Pauline Hanson. The One Nation boss told voters they deserve better after the video of Mr Dickson cavorting with dancers at a Washington DC strip club last year was aired by Nine Network. Senator Hanson said Mr Dickson’s language and behaviour had failed to live up to her expectations and those of voters. “I am both shocked and disappointed at the vision I forced myself to watch,” she told reporters yesterday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dickson said he was drunk that night and “deeply remorseful” for his actions. “I would like to sincerely apologise for my behaviour that was aired on television last night as a result of the Al Jazeera covert operation filmed in the United States in September 2018,” he said. “The footage shown does not reflect the person I am. It shows a person who was drunk and not in control of his actions and I take full responsibility for allowing that to happen.”
