    What’s your point? Those were actual threats at that time and there was good reason for concern. Action was taken to address them and the threat has been reduced.
    
    The fact that they’re not so much of a threat now isn’t as a result of earlier policymakers ignoring them and pretending they didn’t exist until they went away. It’s because they took action.

      That’s the great thing about fearmongering. When the predicted doomsday scenario doesn’t eventuate, you get to tell people how lucky they are that they listened to you and took action. And there is nearly always some action even if it had little effect on the alleged problem.
      
      Same applies to the Y2K bug, genetic modification, peak oil, and so on. Along with famine, nuclear war, acid rain etc, while some action was taken, the primary reason nothing bad happened is that the risk was vastly exaggerated in the first place.

        Large corporate I worked for at the time had some failures despite a massive remediation project. Team on standby to regression test, urgent fixes, public and media completely unaware.

      I was a student then too.
      We still have nukes.
      Acid rain was only local issues to heavy pollution areas, not global as they tried to scaremonger
      Ozone hole fixed itself and was later found to be more related to solar flares than CFC’s (considering CFC’s are heavier than air.)
      Famine, a local issue still exists and is much smaller now. Caused mostly by local geopolitical events than overall man made events.
      ie Actions in the USA, Europe etc had very little to do with Africa famine or Chinese famine.

    We even had ‘Drills” hiding under the desk and covering our eyes.
    
    It was a real threat.
    
    The so called global warming or whatever they are calling it this week is just a scare and terrify tactic against children.

  …and now Auckland has an apparent climate state of emergency. This reminds me of the the 1980s when every tin pot council in NZ was passing a motion to declare the borough/city nuclear free.
  
  However, what is dangerous about this politicised clamour to pass motions that a climate state of emergency exists is that it gives councillors and bureaucrats a licence to act, implement and incur costs to “mitigate” the effects of climate change. All this for the “benefit” of residents at the expense of ratepayers and taxpayers.

  I’m not sure I’m happy with taxpayer dollars funding student protests on highly controversial subjects that may or may not be true?

  Any despote that does this should be charged with child abuse. It is an absolute disgrace that teachers and parents condone this behaviour.
  If Mount Agung and the two other volcanoes in Indonesia keep spewing their dirty filthy poisoinous gases disrupting and inconveniencing the bogans of the world, boganville or Bali as some know it, is under threat, the decade is looking like half a decade if you follow their illogical beliefs.
  The great thing about the volanoes is they are limiting the flying, surely the greens see this as good for their cause.
  I have always had the opinion even if the temperature rose 1.5 degrees, some in the world would have huge wins out of it, some would lose.
  Farmers in cold areas would benefit, less rain and more warmth and more CO2 would be beneficial for growing grass.
  Grass to smoke, eat, but not feed animals would be in bountiful supply in our new green world.
  The other real downside is Cindy may only have a decade left to rule her socialist complying nation.
  Poor old Winston, may not even be there at the end in a decade, could be dribbling in his soup in aged care, with no idea of whats happening at all.
  If he sticks to under two standard drinks a day he maybe there to see the end………..

    1.5°C warming is about same as moving 180km towards equator. Much of the world (NZ especially), would jump at the chance to do so. Also note that tropics don’t get warmer due to the rapid increase in ocean evaporation at elevated temperatures – effectively clamps ocean surface temps to <30°C, more heat just leads to more heat dissipating rainfall there.

  Alloytoo, Arden is so used to soft puff pieces and tame leftie interviewers, when interviewed by a right leaning person she is immediately on the back foot and easier for her to say things like ‘I don’t have the numbers to answer that’ or ‘I will have to get back to you on that’ etc etc, so no real answers just fluff and bluster and an overall impression that she is being ‘bullied’ by even being asked pertinent political questions!

  On her very first day on the campaign trail after Little was rolled she was questioned about that days Reserve bank meeting re interest rates . She didn’t know it was happening. The media / commentariat gave her a free pass on that , had it been a pale stale male of the right I am certain the same lack of knowledge , detail ,ability to run this country would have been used incessantly to delegitimise that candidates run , instead we got the media annointed Mother Jacinda ………

  From what I can hear, yes. Look at her interview with Barry Soper and she Ums and Ahs her way through that. I don’t recall HC, JK or BE (that’s as far back as I go in NZ) or even a reasonable MP with such lazy speech patterns. For someone with a degree in communication I would have expected her to at least have learned to not use those “crutch words”. Even a stint with Toast Masters would help.
  Then she’s not learned to maintain either a neutral tone of voice or facial expressions. It doesn’t matter how exasperated she gets with the interview, as PM she should keep an interested, neutral face and tone. She should not be “wearing her emotions on her sleeve”.
  As part of my work I do public speaking presenting technical subjects, and I’ve trained myself, even when talking off the cuff to not use crutch words.

      For me, her habitual pronunciation of the letter “t” as a “d” is a constant irritant when she’s speaking. It suggests an inadequate level of education and / or an unwillingness on her part to take steps to overcome an obvious and embarrassing speech defect. Either way it does nothing to assist her in ‘communications’ which are claimed to be her forté.

        She has far more worth than Cindy in my eyes, keeps Rabbit, Mice, and Rat population under control, aptly named Killa. Earns her keep.
        Not unusual to a see a double bunny buffet on back mat when you wake up.
        Is yours a Japanese cat, try ahhhh soooo.

Kelburn neighbours calling students entitled for thinking they can gather in a public park doing what students do.

But but but the Wellington City Council made the Countdown Metro at the bottom of the cable car close down its alcohol shelves hours before the supermarket closes. Because students might buy beer and hop on the cable car.

There are not many near neighbours to Kelburn Park and sounds like students congregate by the fountain anyway – across the whole the park from almost all neighbours.

Like those who buy a home near a 50 year old mushroom farm, or build and complain about animals making animal noises – who are the entitled here?

  City-dwellers (frequently Aucklander’s it should be noted) full of their own self-importance, and flush with money, buy up lifestyle blocks because ‘It’s cool to live in the country, wif all the little animals, and the sheep and goats and (for young Melanie), a horse )and for Tarquin), a dog’ then complain bitterly when the wind shifts and they discover that the effluent pond 3 km away is somewhat high, the cowshed next door is noisy and that owls (and Pukeko’s) make noises at night.
  
  Their reaction is invariably legal in nature and as a result, in various rural areas, long-established farmi-based businesses have been forced to close. The farmers don’t have the resources to fight, they just want to farm. The ‘outliers’ DO have the resources and want to impose their ‘idealistic’ views on the area. Sadly, they tend to win; then wonder why they are not liked…

    We live in a rural area but not too far from the big smoke.
    
    We have a mix of farmers and ex townies, as we are, and we all get on fairly well.
    
    The only complainers so far have been the farmers or their workers, one about wedding fireworks (on a farmer’s land of course) and not being allowed to enter private property without having a chat first.
    
    Wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Rugby World Cup 2019 is just around the corner, so we want to make sure you know how to catch the big matches.

Unfortunately, your Spark broadband connection isn’t fast enough to stream the matches live on Spark Sport. The good news is you’ll be able to watch some of them on free-to-air TV with TVNZ.

I`m in Helensville and they cannot deliver Live on ADSL,VDSL or Wireless( the plan I am on).
Because of their reluctance to offer unlimited plans on wireless, I`m guessing because their system can`t cope with demand in this the age of technology.
I would be interested to get the NZRFUs opinion on this failure.
There is also a tacit admission that Fibre won`t be connected either before September even tho` Chorus have installed the cable to my gate?

  JibberJabber, in your post, you mention wireless internet. We live in Ahuroa, our internet/broadband is only ADSL copper phone line or microwave wireless. We have microwave/wireless and if I’m reading your post correctly I can get Netflix and other internet services on our TVs, but not the rugby world cup. Is this correct?

    A month ago my ADSL broadband degraded so badly that even when it was working I barely got the promised 5Mbps and would only work 4 days out of 7, it got so bad that the call centre flagged my phone number and refused to answer even though I was unfailingly polite at all times, so eventually had to travel into Westgate to the store where they got me onto wireless, imagine my glee as I now get up to 90Mbps.
    Netflix can play on 2 devices seemlessly now, to get the RWC you have to download the Spark App and pay 60 to 100 dollars for the RWC, but as my post shows they are telling me even if I have the App( a free download) and pay for the RWC coverage they cannot deliver and if I want to watch it`ll have to be delayed ( by 1 hour)coverage on TV1.

      Thanks JJ, i sympathize . Ee are with Stratnet who do a rural service out our way via microwave from towers to a dish on our roof. Like you we can get Nerflix to the TVs and devices. I haven’t got round to downloading the Spark app yet. I’ll give our provider a call and see what happens.

Does Israel Folau read stuff.co?
In Australia apparently section 772(1) of the Fair Work Act makes it unlawful for an employer to terminate an employee’s employment because of, or for reasons including an employee’s religion. And if an employee’s religion includes a person’s expression of their religious beliefs … then was Folau terminated for reasons including his religion, or not?

If an employee’s employment is terminated because of reasons which are statutorily unlawful under section 772(1), the employee has 21 days after the termination, to apply to the Fair Work Commission, asking it to deal with the matter. Once unlawful termination is alleged, it’s up to RA to prove the termination wasn’t anything to do with any unlawful reason, or for reasons including that unlawful reason.

And if RA can’t prove the termination had nothing to do with religion, then the Federal Court has the full jurisdiction to order that RA reinstate Folau; pay him full compensation; pay his (no doubt significant) legal bills; and pay a civil penalty of $A50,000 or more.

So I caught a bus this morning which is not frequent these days.

Mother at bus stop with approx 6 year old. Screeching at her son to “eat your breakfast”. Breakfast was a large sweet muffin with thick surgery icing.

Sure it is just a muffin, but it is a sure bet that the muffin and the tattoos and the screeching are markers of this kid’s life. He is disadvantaged no matter which school he goes to.

The episode also reminded me yet again of the downsides of public transport.

The man was investigated by Parliamentary Services, which found the claims were unsubstantiated.

Since independent external reviewer, Debbie Francis, has recorded an unsubstantiated case in her report, what credence does any other part of the report have?

If the information reported by in the media – that a man has been investigated and claims against him were found to be unsubstantiated, and he has apparently continued working, on what grounds has he now been stood down and what action is he now entitled to take against his employer?

Does the Report refer to the Jami-Lee Ross matters – like Peters taunting Bridges over not being able to determine who among his Members was as seriously mentally unwell as to threaten self-harm, and was indeed exposed at one point on railway tracks to such harm, or the Member of Parliament who reputedly indicated Ross should kill himself, or are these issues omitted because they are still being investigated, or under consideration?

If it includes material it should not, and omits issues it should contain, what use is the report?

Heard on Radio New Zealand news bulletin that Marine Le Pen’s National Rally Party, having done well in the EU elections, was a ‘far right’ party. Funnily enough, when referencing the Green and the Socialist Parties in the same bulletin neither was referred to as ‘far left’. Wonder why RNZ, committed as it is to balance and objectivity, wouldn’t be even-handed in their terminology.

  Well said, and definitely one of my pet annoyances of the moment. Even the Brexit party, which did so well in this week’s Euro elections, is described as ‘far right’ when pretty much its only policy is to deliver the result of the democratic referendum on British membership of the EU. Equally irritating is the constant use of the word ‘populist’ – apparently meaning popular with the peasant classes who know no better. If your on the left of politics around the world at the moment it’s only democracy if the left wins – otherwise people who are clearly too stupid to vote have made an error in democratically over-ruling there elitist, left-win betters!

Auckland Council magazine arrived yesterday, with Mayor Goff on page one standing next to a Labour red container with a giant number 1 on it. Shameless self promotion using council resources . And yesterday he’s also on the front page of the Herald sitting next to Jacinda in her hijab at the mosque. Last election he ran as an “independent” candidate with a blue billboard on fiscal responsibility. It looks like he’s back to being a Labour candidate again this election.

Oh dear. The coalition is leaking; again!

National can reveal key details from the Government’s so called ‘Wellbeing Budget’ ahead of its release on Thursday, Leader of the Opposition Simon Bridges says.

“The Government will announce a total of $1.3 billion for the purchase of assets in Vote Defence Force in 2019/2020, up from $641 million last year. This has nothing to do with the Government’s wellbeing priorities. It shows the Prime Minister has yet again had to throw her principles out the window to buy off Winston.

“Vote Forestry has doubled. There will be an extra $139 million, for a total of $277 million in the first year. Again, this doesn’t fit in with the Government’s five budget priorities of wellbeing.

“It makes a mockery of the Government’s inability to settle the teachers strike and refusal to fund more for dentistry – there’s money for tanks but not for teachers, there’s money for trees but not for teeth.

“In Vote Official Development Assistance, there will be $740 million for International Aid in 2019/2020. We can confirm that this is $47 million more than last year. Yet, the Government couldn’t find the $62 million to fully fund ambulance services.

“There will also be $744 million for DHBs. That will be barely enough to cover business as usual cost pressures including deficits, let alone new initiatives. This clearly won’t be enough to cover all of the promises made by the Government.

“Grant Robertson said we’d have to wait until Christmas Day to unwrap all of the presents but National has had a peek under the tree and it’s disappointing. It’s not the Wellbeing Budget – it’s the Winston Budget.

“The Wellbeing Budget was meant to be transformational but it’s all spin and no substance.”

The intimate details of budgets are usually a closely-guarded secret. Pre-Budget announcements are made, but the fine details remain concealed until Budget Day.

So, as with the Cabinet Paper on the Cannabis referendum, it seems that someone from within the coalition has leaked Budget information to National. Are relations between the coalition parties less cordial than we keep getting told they are?

Interestingly, Jacinda Ardern said there would be no inquiry into the source of the leak of the Cabinet paper. We found out at the end of last week that the PM wasn’t being completely open and transparent, as an investigation was underway. I suspect the Terms of Reference of that inquiry have just been widened.

    To be honest, I don’t have a problem with this. The military is often the first place cuts are made, but the first place politicians go to when the excrement hits the fan, as they did in Kaikoura, and Christchurch, as well as any disasters that befall our pacific neighbours.
    
    For decades now we have a situation where the military need to do more with less. Our Surveillance Aircraft were old when I served on the late 80s, as were the Transport Aircraft, and that was 30 years ago.
    
    That being said, industrial action is not an option for the NZDF, who have worked constructively with government to achieve results. Something that teachers could learn from. It doesn’t hurt that Ron Mark is pulling some strings in a government working hard to keep its coalition partners onside.

    But as you well know, it’s not the information leaked that is of significance here. The coalition parties baited Bridges for months over the leaking of his expenses. Now there have been two significant leaks from within the coalition, and we now know that there’s an inquiry underway to find the first leaker, despite the PM saying there wouldn’t be an investigation.   This is such a beat up. Running cars directly through cheap $10million/km tunnels is an excellent idea. It reduces equipment and development costs, lowers complexity and loading times, and increases versatility. Autonomous electric cars can be set up to merge from a large fan into a close packed computer controlled stream with short inter-car gaps allowing up to 20000 cars per hour per tunnel (can fit 2 lanes per Ø4.5m tunnel). That is the equivalent of 8 lanes of motorway travel for just $10million per km! A very affordable solution to fix city traffic issues forever. $10billion for 200km of tunnel and 120,000 electric commuter cars could totally fix Auckland’s traffic issues.

    Heard about drag? The problem with skinny tunnels is that the air has nowhere to go. You (and the other cars) are basically pushing a huge column of air along. That creates, essentially, a huge high pressure bow wave on each car that’s dragging on the side of the tunnel. Not very efficient.
    
    Heard about crashes? When some cute dickhead’s Tesla catches fire and you’re 5km deep in a skinny tunnel what are you going to do?

I see that Alfred Ngaro is staying with the Nats and not going to form a Christian party.

I’m pleased about this. I feel that there is a place for Christians in Mainstream Politics, but a faith based party in an MMP system is a recipe for disaster.

Imagine, for a moment, a faith based party wielding the sort of influence that Winston does.

BREAKING – Alfred Ngaro to stay with National.

MP Alfred Ngaro has decided not to leave the National Party to start his own Christian conservative party, saying National is his “home”.

“I have informed National Party Leader Simon Bridges and my caucus colleagues that I will continue as a member of the National Caucus,” he said in a statement today.

The Nexus Planning & Research survey of 1,008 people aged 18 and over shows 49% consider a backyard essential when buying a home, and another 42% think one would be nice to have.

“It’s interesting to see that people consider having a backyard much more important than living close to work, public transport, parks or schools,” says Westpac’s Robert Hill.

My partners mum just txt to say she heard them saying on ZB that National has leaked info about the ‘Wellbeing’ budget – and it sounded like Winston has allocated something like $1.3 billion to Defence!! She reckons if theres nothing in it for pensioners this time, she knows of at least 83 votes that Winnie can shove up his arse.

  It’s not a bad yarn Swifty but I’m still left with the impression that the writer is an A Grade poof.
  
  One thing he left out was the incredible money some of the long term freezing workers earned. Before Waingawa closed a good mate of mine worked in the fellmongery department. They started early, finished by 2pm & on a full week with Saturday overtime he could take home north of $900. They were robbing the place blind as well…..no one ‘in the know’ would have been thieving less than another $70 worth of prime meat to boot.
  
  They’d drop $50 each on bets & beer at the pisser on the way home.
  
  But one thing stands out in my memory. 95% of those big earners lived from payday to payday. Some owned their own homes, most had working wives but when the season ended or the union boss yelled “all oot” they were near enough destitute.
  
  Working on the No 1 chain to the dole was a hell of a drop.

      As you suggest most of those works were antiquated. There were two reasons…..1) The workers didn’t want change or updating as it could drop their money & staff levels…..2) the (normally British owned) works didn’t really give a stuff how inefficient things were. The equation was max. price of carcase in the UK, less costs, less their profit equalled the payout to the NZ cocky.
      
      The system was totally fucked. It took the Douglas reforms to restore sanity to the industry.

      The rewards for rocking the boat weren’t usually positive Swifty. I can recall how the “perking” by a outwards goods foreman & a greedy truck driver sent one well known Hutt Valley food company to the wall in the 80s.

The one-year State subsidy announced for print media – to cover costs of eight reporters – is just the start.

That’s what you might take from one of the opinion pieces rolled out in Stuff newspapers about the subsidy.

Veteran journalist Rick Neville, of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association, writes (in the Christchurch Press and Southland Times and doubtless in other Stuff newspapers):

“The $1 million of public money being tipped into a PILOT scheme to hire more reporters to cover local news, won’t save media as we have known it, but IT’S A START. “ [The capital letters are my emphasis]

This a is a notable political development. The Left-wing coalition government has not only boosted spending on State radio, it is taking first step to add print media subsidies to its spending on State radio and State TV.

It also signals a new field of expansion for Radio New Zealand. Could this herald Radio NZ expanding by taking a stake in Stuff media? The Australian owner seems to be finding it hard to find a buyer for Stuff.

The State’s $1 million will finance eight reporters, plus a project manager at Radio NZ.

Can State subsidies save independent print media, which are under heavy pressure from internet-based competition for advertising? A second question is whether a susidised can remain independent of the hand that feeds – the Government? At least half of NZ would likely judge Radio NZ to lean Left.

I find it a little ominous that State print-media subsidies are launched while free speech is under threat.
