Which describes Scott Morrison? None?

So is he going to give a billion to the dodgy Adani family to build the Carmichael mine for the Queensland hillbillies who put him in power?

Nah. Morrison is a salesman. He knows coal’s number’s up — buyers are dwindling; India is installing renewables.

Oh yeah, he might have taken a lump into Parliament, a royal wave for the punters. Morrison says he believes in miracles but he is a fundamental Christian not an alchemist. No gold here.

A few jobs and the loss of the Great Barrier Reef. And a lot of explaining to rational informed Australians.

The straw and dung Farrar feeds you mushrooms won’t do it.

Kiwibuild – The Prime Minister’s ‘big, useless elephant in the room’.

Duncan Garner tells it like it is.

Mr Twyford – ‘what went through the front door of his office during his years planning the birth of what’s turned out to be the shameful and embarrassing child the Government would prefer was hiding in the policy panic room?’

So what happened to the ‘housing crisis’? Looks like it is in the private rental sector –

– rents up, vacancies down
– social housing applicants up (a lot), and taxpayers fork out average of $275 a week for each household paying income related rent. (A pattern emerging?)
– bank lending to residential property investors down (a lot since mid 2016)
– Housing First for the homeless – unknown but reported in Blenheim not one private landlord has signed up.

Now what could be the reason for problems in the private rental sector? Mess with the market, the taxpayer pays the bill.

  Phill Twyford is a special kind of stupid. He is that dumb and stuffed kiwibuild that no one will take over. Cindy can not sack him because that means Labour big ticket item is stuffed. Cindy can not admit to that because she put him there.
  Phill will anouce that he is retiring at the next election. Who would ever give him a job again in NZ, unemployable even in a public trough. They certainly be running to him for public comment.

So it looks like people are taking no notice of Labours dangerous driving advertising on TV or their road safety barriers that they say will reduce fatal crashes need to be install on all roads as their were more deaths on our roads yesterday with two dead and more seriously injured in horror start to the weekend.

Is there a ‘forgotten electorate’ out there quietly ticking over and patiently awaiting the next general Election to express themselves via ballot against the current administration?

I ask this as the recent Australian results indicated a large number of ‘shy conservatives’ who like me, tend not to discuss their political views as vocally as some others might but who are quietly fuming at the way the current lot are trying to rig a cushy future for themselves.

    ACT should contest the West Coast. The incumbent doesn’t live there, is now shown to be useless and attached to Labour. The Nats are never going to take that seat. They may not win but they could pick up a lot of Party votes by being there.
    There is probably another couple of disaffected electorates like that where the Nats. wont get the nod but ACT could do very well. Farmers are pissed with bot main parties.

      Do you really think ACT is going to make a difference in WCT? Also remember National did take the seat in 2008. Its a close seat. In 2011 National lead Labour by 6262 votes. In 2014 it increased to7620 votes but 2017 we got hit hard with a majority of just over 1000. Acts vote over the time was 2011,278, 2014, 94 and 2017137. In simple terms , not a snowballs chance in hell!

    It’s like many on here said they wouldn’t vote for Winston in 2016 a year out from the 2017 election but they did all because they had a beef against Bill English and Maori. A lot of these same people don’t like Simon Bridges so they think Act is the better alternative this time, let’s face if it doesn’t work they will come back and blame everyone else for their stupidity as it could never be their fault.

  LeeC – here’s my take on it:
  At the risk of stating the obvious, NZ is only the size of a minor city even by Australian standards.
  Our population is small, our country is small.
  There is a great level of local knowledge and connectivity – especially regionally.
  Therefore I dont think there are any “ forgotten electorates”.
  What we do have is a skewed political system where the party the majority voted for last time were manoeuvred out of governance on the whim of a man for whom hardly anyone voted.
  Given that we are just a small city in global terms I think we have far too many self-serving activists,
  Councils, boards of various sorts and especially – politicians- all with their hands out for money and power.
  We have top heavy governance in NZ.

    “Majority” means over half. The word you are looking for is “plurality” – most votes but not a majority. The rule here is that the government is whatever group can assemble a majority ….

    That is hardly the case. Consider the following—
    
    New Zealand’s population is expected to hit 5 million in December 2019. In 1992, it was 3.5 million.
    
    Currently, we have 120 MPs (in December: 41,667 people per MP). In 1992, we had 97 (36,082 per MP).
    
    At the 2016 local elections, there were 1,574 elected positions (1992: 1,948), made up of—
    
    Regional Councils 120 (130)
    City Councils (including Auckland Council) 181 (247)
    District Councils 595 (705)
    Community Boards (including Auckland Local Boards) 678 (866).
    
    Compared to Australia, with their Senate, House of Representatives, state and territory lower houses, five states with upper houses, and comprehensive local government, we’re not doing too badly, in my view.

  I don’t think so. Plus Australia has a totally different voting system. For example the Greens got nearly 10 percent of the vote but one seat.
  
  I can’t see any result in 2020 other than a Labour Green government. The Greens are not going to fall below five percent. There is no prospect of National having a coalition partner other than David Seymour. Especially with the splintering of the Conservative religious votes. TOP will get 2 percent at best.

      Paulus, there are many who voted for Winston who will not vote for him again. When I went to the meeting at Te Awamutu where the firearm owners were very unhappy with National there was a woman who had been an NZF candidate who certainly would not be voting NZF again. She may vote ACT this time unless National deal fairly with legal firearm owners.

Yesterday DPF told us that 3 conservative parties means none has a chance. I’m not sure about that?
While a specifically Christian party may not make the 5% threshold there does seem to be room for a conservative populist type party who meets the needs and aspirations of many New Zealanders.

Issues include immigration where both major parties are committed to allowing thousands and thousands of foreigners to come in. National’s donors want the cheap labour while the Labour Party sees thousands of new voters for them. It seems that the race is on to bring in as many foreigners as possible without any concerns about assimilation and the pace of change which almost seems to have the goal of replacing the local population.

Other popular issues could include the economy where thousands of good manufacturing jobs have gone offshore in the name of globalisation. Here in NZ we used to make things. We used to make clothes and shoes and assemble cars and make stereos and TVs. We even used to make trains.

All that has gone and in its demise are thousands of disappointed workers and the exporting of our wonderful raw materials to China where they do make things.

Freedom of speech is a big issue and the many thousands of people of faith see the persecution of Israel Folau as a direct assault on their religion and their freedom of speech. The banning of Don Brash by Massey University zealots is another assault on the kiwi way of being able to speak your mind and have a say.

So I believe a good leader of one of these newly forming parties could start a movement. It’s about time in my opinion for the people of NZ to have a greater choice and more freedom to cast their votes. Right now the choice is between Labour and Labour lite. We deserve something better.

  Scott, the person who really stands out as a potential conservative leader is Elliot Ikilei. He is thoughtful, considered, intelligent and personable. I believe he personally and his social attitudes would resonate with the quiet New Zealanders. I would like to see him get greater exposure.

      I have read his logs and a couple of biographies.
      
      As time went on he became more erratic and was gripped by irrational fury. For example he once forced his crew to eat walrus meat. Which reportedly was not very appetising. He ordered an ear cut off a crew member who refused.
      
      He also behaved irrationally in Hawaii which ultimately led to his death.
      
      One theory is that he had round worms or liver flukes. He complained of severe stonache pains and constipation. Which perhaps accounts for his increasingly bad temper on his later voyages.

    For example King Arthur is well mythologised, but from what fragmentary knowledge we have, there probably was someone called “Arthur” (or Artorius as a possible Latin name) who existed and lead various British forces against invading Saxon tribes.

I read somewhere that while both communism and fascism are both forms of socialism, the latter is somehow more “honest and up-front” than the former, even if both inevitably lead to dystopian nightmares in their drive to mold society into the “ideal” form.

Perhaps the Fascists lay bare their machinery of State power (the police, the army, the uniforms, the polished leather boots, etc.) whereas the Communists keep it cloaked in secrecy (the unmarked state police cars, the knock on the door at 3:00 a.m., the disappearances and re-writing of history, etc.)

If the Fascist shows off his tools of oppression in public for all to see (and makes them as flashy and as in-your-face as possible), then the Communist keeps them hidden, using the fearful imagination of the population as an additional tool to control them.

  From what I’ve read, Communism and Fascism are both collectivist ideologies and therefore both Left wing.
  
  I am not claiming that Communism and Fascism are the same thing—they are not. They are, however, variations on the same theme—the theme of collectivism. That is, they both promote Big Government at the expense of individual freedom. As such, they both belong on the left side of the political spectrum.
  
  The media has long promulgated the myth of a political spectrum that looks something like this:
  
  Far-Left (Communists)—————-Moderates—————Far-Right (Fascists).
  
  What is wrong with that picture? What is wrong with it is that the true political spectrum looks like this: At the far left of the political spectrum we have collectivist ideologies such as Communism and Fascism, then moving to the right we find Socialism, then the Moderates. On the right side of the spectrum we move from the Moderates to Conservatives (who favor a Constitutional, or limited, form of government), and finally at the far right we find the true anarchists, who favor no government at all (not to be confused with faux-anarchists, who wish to tear down existing governments so that they can replace them with other forms of government).
  
  In short, the political spectrum moves from Big Government on the far left, to no government on the far right, with the size and influence of government decreasing as one moves to the right, and vice versa. Fascism belongs squarely on the left side of the spectrum.
  
  Benito Mussolini (who was raised on Marxist philosophy) essentially brought Fascism onto the world stage—so perhaps if I rephrase Mussolini’s quote from above it will make how Fascism views the role of government clearer:
  
  “Everything within the federal government, nothing outside the federal government, nothing against the federal government.”

  The main difference was that under Fascism the rich could retain ownership of the means of production (ie the wealth) while under Communism the state owned everything. That why the rich loved Hitler – they could keep their wealth, and influence the central planners who controlled the plebs. Many industrialists profited mightily during Nazi governance.

  The law allows people to organise their affairs to minimise the impact of taxes on them.

  The guidelines have two sections, depending on the stage of the application. So guidelines are much more restrictive when someone has filled in an application to rent a property but there is no decision yet if the person is the selected tenant.
  
  Once the preferred tenant has been selected, then more checks are permitted.
  
  Some of these bureaucrats need to pop into the real world time to time and see how things really work. How do they think someone progresses from applicant to selected tenant?
  
  But more fun to create a problem and attempt to resolve it.

If this government was serious about change, then they have the capability to do so, and do it quickly.

The fact is that they lack the political will, and are more interested in keeping their bums in the treasury benches.

The last government knew about the viability of borrowing to pay for infrastructure. This government could invest huge amounts in government infrastructure such as better schools and hospitals, but chooses to fund infrastructure through the current budgets, which is putting pressure on the day to day operations of these areas.

NZ currently has the 11th best debt to GDP ratio in the world, and the cost of borrowing has never been better. Our Debt to GDP ratio of 22% is fantastic. To put that into context, China is at 55%, the US is at 109%, and Japan is at an eye watering 234%.

Of course, if the Government was not so focussed on screwing up the economy…….

Were soldiers of the Maori Battalion really treated like second- class citizens when they returned from World War 2, as a headline in the Christchurch Press, and presumably in other Stuff newspapers, trumpets today?

A 1300 sq m memorial to the soldiers is being built at the Waitangi Treaty grounds.

The newspaper quotes Mori Rapana, “cultural manager” of the Treaty grounds, as saying of the treatment of the Maori soldiers on their return:

“They were treated like second-class citizens.

“When they left, they left with full ownership of land; when they returned those houses had been confiscated and their land sold.”

Do Kiwiblog readers know of details or documentation of these confiscations? Have they heard of them before?

Included in any different treatment of Maori and white veterans that I am aware of is that when thousands of soldiers were returned from North Africa on leave around 1944, Maori soldiers were exempt from return, while the forced return to the war of the white veterans caused a mutiny.

Today’s Press article also touches on the high casualty rate of Maori soldiers. This is accurate, but the rate was well under the death rate of the 6000 or so New Zealanders who volunteered as air crew with Bomber Command. More than 2000 were killed. I understand the over-all death rate of Bomber Command air crew was about 45 per cent.

  If someone is referring to Maori Land taken during WW2, then they must be referring to land acquired under the Public Works Act or Soil, Conservation & Rivers Control Act.
  
  Maori Land was taken around Lake Taupo in the 1940s, Land was taken around that time for Hydro works, Geothermal works (Waiareki), and for airports.

  I find that impossible to believe:
  
  1) That is the first time I’ve ever heard reference to such a thing & logic suggests it would have been shouted from the rooftops for the past 75 years.
  
  2) Land is either owned by Maori as individuals or tribally. The law makes no distinction over Maori or Pakeha ownership & confiscation just doesn’t happen. Which leads to:
  
  3) The claims are bullshit. or
  
  4) The land was taken & compensation paid under provision of the Public Works Act. or
  
  5) The tribal chiefs sold the land & told porkies afterwards.

    The Raglan (Whāingaroa) protest raged in the 1970s over the Raglan golf course. The government had taken the land from Māori during the Second World War to use as a military airfield. The land was not handed back at the end of the war to its former Māori owners – instead part of it became a public golf course. An occupation was led by Eva Rickard in 1978, and she and other protesters were arrested on the ninth hole of the course. The land was eventually returned.

      If it was taken during WW1 then it makes a lie of the claims that land was confiscated off Maori Battalion survivors. Very few Maori fought in WW1 & the Battalion was formed in 1940.
      
      Either way, the descendants of the Maori owners were justified in seeking return of the land.

        They weren’t confiscations (in the sense of the 19C. Land confiscations), but there were a number of acquisitions under the PWA or drainage/irrigation/roading developments that were badly handled.
        
        It’s one thing to relinquish land for use as a school, hospital, airfield, etc that is of benefit to the community….but when the unused land was hocked off to a developer or used for another purpose, then the original Maori owners have every reason to be aggrieved.

        I’d probably go along with part of that JB. An old mate of mine, long deceased, fought in Casino & up through Italy often alongside the Maori Battalion.
        
        Apparently the life expectancy of a new POW taken by the Mouldy weren’t very good. He also opined that the only reason the Axis lost was that the Maori had thieved all their gear.
        
        Sometimes the unofficial history recalled by those involved beats the shit out of the official version. 🙂

  Wow, I thought (being rather familiar with my maunga), he was probably one of those soldiers who got caught out on Ruapehu some years back….
  
  So, I queried this and he replied… “Na, got caught out when I took off from Waikune Prison one winter”.

I notice that JB Hi-Fi has a sign on the counter saying that they won’t be able to give out the bright yellow bags any more because of the law.

  I remember reading many years ago the memoirs of Sandy Thomas. He recounted when he led a few Pommie troops in Oman they all got told off by the OIC for calling the locals “Wogs’. Any repetition of the practice would be dealt with very severely.
