Yesterday we learned that the Brexit Party was polling ahead of the Conservatives in the UK general election. Today’s news is that the Brexit party has more support than Conservatives & Labour combined in the lead up to the 2019 European Parliamentary elections.

Teressa May’s disastrous, and some would say treacherous, attempts to keep the UK committed to the failing European Project seems to be generating quite a backlash, rather than the exhausted capitulation she was probably hoping for. Good news for democracy.

  I’ll repeat my opinion from a few weeks ago –National should take a look at this website and add something very similar to their communications strategy. Invite opinion pieces from a whole range of people, not just National MPS or party people. Keep most of them relatively short and to the point. eg. If they had one, they could get farmers/agriculture industry people giving their view on the methane issue in Shaw’s proposed bill.

But the big day is Wednesday – Thursday night in NZ – when she will meet tech leaders at a roundtable in the morning and then again for a formal meeting with other world leaders later in the day’

  The best way to combat these people is to start by KNOWING who they really are and what they really believe.

    That rant from Paddy this morning was very frightening especially as his interviewer asked him questions such as “how can we close them down”.
    Free speech in at stake when such lightweights have such woke views – it seemed from Paddy’s comments that their was an underground army of extremists holding right wing views that posed a danger to NZ – in my humble view it is a handful of f-wits that have fringe views and idiots like Gower give them too much credence.

I’m not sure it was a good idea to announce $27 mill for an un-needed clean energy facility in Taranaki, while launching a costly referendum on cannabis, and telling the teachers, ‘there’s no more money…’.

Meanwhile people are protesting about the upsurge of mental health issues, coupled with a down-surge of funding,.

Clark sacking DHB boards, abolishing accountability and the Herald is now running articles about poverty and homelessness.

The farmers are sold down the river by Wnston ‘keeping governments honest’ Peters in his sop to the Greens given so that he could feather his own nest with the waka-jumping Act.

The Greens get more dead-rat as their cannabis law change ‘bottom line’ negotiating chip is pissed on.

Meanwhile, teachers and doctors strike, NCEA results tumble and people still live in cars and garages.

But fear not!

The Empress Jacinda can cure ‘nine years of neglect’ with a hug.

Let them eat hash-cake, eh?

      It has been discussed lots here before. There are specific industrial uses of hydrogen such as the Haber process but using hydrogen as a fuel (except for some specialised cases such as rocketry) is dumb. The most economical way of producing hydrogen is via steam reforming of natural gas, so just use the natural gas and avoid the expensive and difficult technical issues of storing and transporting hydrogen.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reveals she inadvertently saw the Christchurch mosque shootings video – Herald

In an average length article however, there seems to be no mention of when the Prime Minister saw the video – hours or days after the event – in what context, on what platform [“I use Facebook, Instagram and occasionally Twitter”], how long she took to recognise what it was, and then how much of the 16 minutes 55 seconds she watched.

Given Ardern “inadvertently” saw this material, was it after the footage was banned by New Zealand’s chief censor four days after the shootings, on pain of a fine of up to $10,000 or up to 14 years in jail for sharing the clip, defined as “objectionable” material, and if so has she reported it to the Police, or had anyone determine who Forwarded or posted it to her, or placed it on a platform so she received it?

And, why is the fact that indeed she has seen it, released in the New York Times on the eve of her travel to France for this week’s international anti-terrorism tech summit in Paris?

Why do I feel New Zealand citizens finding out now that she has seen the video – having commented on it for weeks, but not mentioning herself actually viewing it – is itself a little “inadvertent”.

Private airline, first class everything, lovely Bubba and Nurses along for a week.
A pity nobody of importance in the affairs of this meeting I called is coming, but as long as the media see me that’s alright
A week to have photos taken by my adoring media alongside my special friend Macron.
I had a private session with the Sec Gen of the UN before I left and he praised me publically so a job cannot be far away.
Sorry New Zealand – it is all too much for me to be there as there are many affairs of my future at stake elsewhere.

  3. Used the stick he gave them to beat him with.
  
  Hipkins traded education union support at the election for a monopoly say in how education is run and how much WE have to pay for it.
  If National were still in.
  There would be more “charter schools” and the threat of more.
  Taking away the monopoly position of the unions.
  Tax cuts, putting more money in Teacher’s pockets too.
  Targets would be enforced after all schools are for the education of the pupils and enrichment of society
  NOT a social club for people called teachers to attend on a PART TIME basis and get paid.

  A good teacher deserves a pay rise. It is the teachers that help shape the students into good citizens. Get rid of the crap teachers, and increase their wage, they deserve it

    Get rid of the crap teachers. Same identification problems as for the “good” ones.
    
    I’m not saying it is impossible to do something about this, but it is hard. The profession are not agitating for it ….

      360 Degree performance appraisal is widely used now, though not universal. It would be a good start for teacher appraisal. Takes some setting up, but would be cost effective to establish given a standard approach and the numbers of teachers concerned.

Will we ever see the breakdown of spending for the $961 per person per week to house the homeless? Including how much is spending on support services rather than the actual roof. And the impact on the private rental market where these homes appear to be sourced.

Even more to the point, will we ever see a cost benefit analysis or a post implementation review?

        Good question – must be lots of empty homes around the place. According to the Housing First website –
        
        Private landlords, iwi, community housing providers and HNZ provide housing places.
        
        Note private landlords are first on the list, social housing providers and HNZ last . There were 63 state and social homes nationwide ready to let at 31 March though, which is a start.

    I would say a chunk of the Housing First budget will be for support services. Maybe rough sleepers would prefer to be warm and dry in their own place, certainly, but they will be encouraged to allow plenty of do gooders to help them. If they prefer to be independent, there is a good chance their accommodation will start to degrade quickly.

It is time to call out our stupid politicians, executives of NZ’s bureaucratic agencies, lobby groups and media. All of them are caught in the cult of feelz, and if we repeat a myth often enough it must be the truth. Repeating a myth is not the truth and not correct, it is still a myth. The notion I am referring to is this idea that Auckland needs to get more people on to public transport.

The first point is NO it doesn’t, and from it the obvious question is WHY?

Over the past 3 months there have a series of news items that reveal the groups I listed above don’t have a clue what they are doing except wanting public money to be spent needlessly.

First there was Uber reporting that Auckland is the most congested city in Australasia and how difficult it was to travel in the rush hour. By any properly measured international standard Auckland is not congested. It has peak period congestion. Without writing a dissertation the truth is, if you force a lot of people to travel down narrow corridors with arbitrary blockages, you’ll get congestion.

Second, there was Gen Zero with there publication recommending lower and capped fares to get more people on the buses. Why? Affordability and save the planet.

Then it was reported that Auckland Councillors had been looking at how to increase patronage further on the buses. Why? Same as the Gen Zero report. How? By lowering fares.

Then to cap it all, the PT sector now has to deal with the impact of the Employment Relation Amendment Act.

Now a little known fact was that prior to 6/05/19, NZ was short of over 300 bus drivers. Because of the ERAA, NZ is short by over 1,200 bus drivers.

Now all of the above have 3 things in common, these being:
1. They are going to cost ratepayers, taxpayers and even ratepayers $millions to implement;
2. It is debateable whether the acquisition of more buses and the hiring of more drivers (if they can be recruited), will actually achieve anything except spend a lot of money; and
3. Whether there will be a significant mode shift away from private vehicles to PT.

In summary, all the people listed in my opening sentences encourage a lot of money to be spent on PT, because it feelz like the right thing to do. Yet they don’t know whether it will achieve their desired end or how much it costs.

Why am I so certain it will not work? Because at no point do they stick to the known facts, being:
1. 90% of all trips by PT are people go to and from their place of employment/occupation;
2. Nobody actually surveys where the demand for people to use PT comes from. That is where do people travel from and to. Just because there is a bus route from A to B doesn’t mean people will use it.

Until people understand the needs of the public, responding to every transport barking dog will end up with situations such as Wellington’s new bus network.

  And yet hullkiwi, Wellington had a vast amount of data from Snapper and from their ticketing system when creating the new bus system and contracts.
  
  To be fair, the ticketing system records only when and where cash payers and gold card holders get on, not when and where they get off. Still good data though and a lot of it.

  I’ve yet to meet a person who *wanted* to catch mass public transport. It’s always a compromise decision, typically based on car and parking availability. There may be some trainspotters and greenwashed twits, but I’m guessing even they would take a private taxi if offered at the same price.
  
  Why? Because mass public transport always has been, and always will be, a bit shit. It doesn’t solve the actual travel problem, which is to get someone from one door to the destination door in comfort.
  
  With public transport, you have to go to it. Wait for it. Put up with unreliable degrees of comfort, and then it drops you off – almost all of the time – outside the door you didn’t want to go to. You then have to go walk to the place you really wanted to go to.
  
  The future is vehicles. Point-to-point. They’re preferable. Low-cost, point-to-point driverless vehicles will consign buses and trains to history.
  
  They solve the problem – better.

So this ‘Homicide Report’ on Stuff says that”

“Stuff’s analysis reveals that at least two-thirds of the gun-related homicides involved either a .22 rifle or shotgun. Many of those weapons were cut-down or modified. Semi-automatic firearms rarely figured.

Of the 84 cases where we identified the killer’s licensing status, only 12 were legally permitted to own a gun.”

If that is the case, why was there a need to change the gun laws so urgently? Christchurch was an aberration that surely cannot be controlled for unless you ban private gun ownership. Of course, then the crooks will have to go to the Police to get their guns…

I suspect that the real purpose of the report is to get gun registration, now that gun type ownership has been reduced.

If he had not got his hands on a 22 he would have opened the kitchen drawer and grabbed a boning knife.

The stupid thing about tightening up on laws is that only the law abiding will comply. Gangs and murderers won’t.

  1. The timidity and compliance of National in the legislation haste, haste which bolstered the international and home reputation of the PR-savvy Prime Minister: she announced the ban would be organised within 10 days.
  
  2. The sole politician to oppose the rush, ACT’s Seymour, missed his chance to block the legislation’s urgency by being outside the House of Representatives talking to reporters at the crucial time. How can we be convinced that wasn’t a stunt?

Government says they are banning MSSA’s but ban all sorts of non-mssa.
Government says MSSA’s are the problem yet data shows other firearms are used more often in murder.
Government says registration is required yet MSSA’s are already registered.
They are creating a narrative before the inquiry so they get the results they want. Will we hear about the vetting of the asshole involved. Will we hear about the stringent vetting and security requirements for MSSA users. Will we see a cost benefit analysis of spending millions on a buyback that will have no effect on crime or make anyone safer.

Although the gangs may not voluntarily comply, the new law gives an additional tool for the police in searches and other crime busting activity against the gangs.
In addition as law abiding citizens progressively hand in their proscribed guns, it reduces the number that the gangs might steal or otherwise acquire on the black market.
I would also point out that if National had been the government at the time of the Christchurch massacre, they would have introduced pretty much the same changes to the gun laws.

  In Christchurch I have seen signs such as “range closed” on gun clubs where thousands of us have enjoyed law-abiding sport.

      Wayne Mapp’s point seems to be that law-abiding gun owners are, or will, compliantly hand in their guns. If they are unhappy about it, the police will have a big job rounding up the scores of thousands of legal but unregistered firearms.
      
      There is an idiomatic phrase, at least in NZ, that “happy to go along with something” is more or less synonymous with “willing to comply”.
      
      This is typically assumed to include a caveat, that if you are only reluctantly willing, you respond: “I will do it, but I’m not terribly happy about it.”

Intimidation is rife at universities, says an Oxford professor in an article behind the paywall at the Telegraph.

Professor Jeff McMahan says:“There is a real climate of intimidation at universities that makes people fearful of speaking out on controversial issues. Many people are deterred from publishing ideas or arguments for which they could provide good reasons and evidence because they are frightened of threats to their career or even their physical well-being.”

McMahan, reports the Telegraph, has been setting up the Journal of Controversial Ideas, a peer-reviewed publication dedicated to airing the kind of research on race and intelligence, genetics and gender identity that has recently seen academics drummed out of their jobs.

Conservative philosopher Roger Scruton has signed up for the journal’s editorial board. Scruton was sacked as a British Government adviser after an interview in which he appeared to make an anti-Semitic reference to George Soros’s “empire” in Hungary and claimed the Chinese Government was turning its citizens into robots.

The new journal plans to offer anonymity to contributors. A web site has been set up ahead of publication later this year:

Maybe we could apply that to cars too.
Hand in all cars over a certain size.
People would HAVE TO catch public transport and gangs wouldn’t be able to steal them either.

and it would still be wrong and I would disagree with it. I would still vote National, for all the other reasons.
I did after they voted on the “smacking law”.

Then we have the Racing Industry another of your donaters who get tax breaks for pretty horses and other anomalies that could be put to help those that you say you have no money to help, Teachers and Junior Doctors and others just to satisfy your whim.         If you read National statistics of all the schools in NZ, you would discover that at least 10% of secondary school pupils do not achieve Level 1 NCEA.
        
        But look closer and you will discover that 20% of Maori pupils did not get Level One and there are schools where over 35% of their pupils leave without attaining Level 1 NCEA.

  Two of my family have left without passing NCEA level 2. Boredom was a main reason. Both have acquired level 4 and one a significant degree.
  When the curriculum is once again teaching basic GST calculations in year 10 even the able are likely to drop out. Is secondary school fit for purpose?

    One of ours had to be seriously encouraged not to drop out after Level 2. Bored and unhappy but nothing wrong with her brain.
    
    Worked a few after school shifts at Maccas and saw the year out. Added more Maccas shifts and within weeks of leaving school was offered and started management training, with NCEA credits.

        Check hansard at question time it was stated that annual growth to Mar 31 was 2% therefore with
        0.9% + 0.6% + 0.3% = 1.8% mar31 Q must be 0.2%
        Simple maths.
        If the trend continues the Jun 2019 Q will be 0.0%
        therefore annual growth will be 1.2% and if it continues on we will be in recession by Sept 2019 Q.

Demolition 101….

Michael Reddell, in his Croaking Cassandra blog, takes apart Liam Dann’s polyanna bullshit on the NZ economy. Dann is the NZ Herald’s “business editor at large” (that doesn’t mean he’s escaped and is on the run).

Among Reddell’s points:

– New Zealand’s economic performance is among the worst in the OECD.

– There is no evidence that NZ’s immigration policy, the most aggressive in the OECD over the last two decades, has contributed to what is NZ’s imaginary economic success.

– There was nothing spectacular about NZ’s coming through the last Global Financial Crisis.

– NZ struggles to attract really high quality migrants.

– Rates of business investment in New Zealand (share of GDP) have been towards the bottom of the OECD range for decades even though our population growth rate has been at the upper end of the OECD range.
