    In case you’ve forgotten mikenmild, Labour also campaigned in 2014 about having a referendum on the flag. Yes, their referenda would have been held the other way around, but it was still an issue they were going to the country on. I guess that makes it David Cunliffe’s vanity project.

      Um, no. John Key allowed himself to be personally identified with the flag debate, in a way no other politician did. Lots of people favoured a new flag, but were turned off by the botched process.
      Why Key chose that particular issue to make his signature, I cannot guess. He was wildly popular, but didn’t seem to be able to translate that popularity into making any lasting changes. I think the present PM will end up that way too – popular but not much in the way of lasting achievement.

  Unfortunately Lee a lot of us thought there was a sea change many months ago but the polls continue to tell us otherwise. The COL are doing just great – I know cos I saw it on the propaganda at 6 the other night.
  All those people living in their Mitsubishi Gallants 18 months ago now walk past my place in their pinstripe suits with their heads held high. Hack Lame or News Grub must do a follow up ‘where are they now’ story on it.

  To get Grandma and Grandad to accept this “reform” the hypocritical CoL will sooner or later have to address the drug driver issue – not just sweep it under a carpet of weed because stoners are gentle, nice people etc.
  The drug driving advert on TV which depicts a hapless young man covered in milkshake, but uninjured after a crash, is a very slick piece of propaganda which implies drug related accidents
  don’t have the same consequences as drink driving.

        The survey that came out of Canada last week, following a year of it being legal, showed that daily users are twice as likely to think that driving after consuming weed is safe.
        
        That is what we need to worry about. That core group of stoners rather than the casual users.

    I have driven whilst being very baked and also while I was drunk. I would never drive drunk again. They are not even in the same ballpark in terms of danger to other road users.
    When reports of “drugs and alcohol” accompany a news report of a vehicular accident, I immediately think to myself that they may as well say “burgers and alcohol” because such crashes are 95% due to the alcohol.
    I don’t advocate stoned driving, but I know which substance is safer.

        This is exactly the point: What does a “significant” amount of cannabis mean? It is always “substance x AND cannabis”. It does not follow that cannabis is the major contributory factor.
        The effects of alcohol are far more deleterious than cannabis, and synthetics are absolute garbage and much more dangerous that actual cannabis could ever be.

  Right Lee C this has the potential to be the COL’s biggest own goal as the unintended consequences start to impact before the result. Lest we forget the Green Gang were only accepted by old Winston First in the role of Confidence and Supply so according to him are not truly part of the COL. They are the barter partner that swings to the best deal for them based on the mood inside their own bubble.
  The COL gambled on holding a referendum on legalizing drug use to the general election to improve their chances of gaining votes. While there is potential to lift the turn out rate it might all backfire with a massive turf out rate as never seen before. There is still time for more broken promises even before the new ones start.

Adding to “The rural betrayal” –

Shane Jones has said – the rate of commercial replanting over the next 10 years would have a “significant impact” on the 1 billion trees total.

“For example, if the recent 95 per cent replanting rate was maintained over the next decade, this would equate to 770m trees” – Cabinet paper presented last August, by Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones. [1]

This means of course that Shane needs to plant only 230 million trees and he’ll – on his books – count off his 1 billion by planting less than a quarter of that total.

It does also mean, however, that the non-Jones sector will cut down 95% (as stated above) of their mature trees because that is the reason for them replanting anything.
So, in theory, if they plant 770 million trees, they will also fell 731.5 elsewhere – leaving Shane with a effective net number of 38.5 million to add to the 230 million which the cuzzies will plant, if they ever get off their couches – or a grand total of 268.5 million trees

To be honest, and to attempt a transparent integrity – which not all others display – I will accept at one point there may be 1 billion new seedlings or saplings aged 1–10 years old in the ground, but non-Jones forestry will be elsewhere cutting down 95% of their annual re-planted numbers and exporting trees with easily a decade of carbon-collecting maturity still in them.

And, a further point – there is usually the forest management of pruning and production thinning after planting, which reduce the total planted and could whack out about 100 million trees of commercial’s 770m total. And there is a difference between “exotic” trees and “natives” (reportedly less than half as effective) in their sequestering of carbon, which this whole exercise is supposedly about.

However, as a recent unpopular report [2] reveals, all wood products store carbon that will eventually be released at a rate dependant on the type of product and the treatment the wood has undergone.
The report basically seems to advocate: actually reduce carbon emissions, instead of storing them for future generations.

Nuclear power requires seismic protection of the plant and ultimately a resolution of what to do with the waste – a problem projecting into the future.
And the carbon sequestered now into timber, on its future release will be a similar problem, making Ardern’s climate change slogan use of “nuclear moment” more accurate than she would want us to think.

Nuclear waste becomes a problem “down the road”. Sequestering carbon in trees also “kicks the problem down the road”.
Kicking stuff “down the road” is about all this Government does.
Making it a problem for Neve’s generation.

But really what difference will 268.5 million trees make – less those pruned or natives?
Perhaps someone will see through this screen of bullshit – see the trees that aren’t a forest, but stock-piled carbon – and do something about a real solution: reducing CO2 to start with, and not “kicking anything down the road”.
Does Ardern realise the real “nuclear moment” she should be talking about?

  A television cabinet was needed, so a quote was obtained to having one made locally – nice native timber perhaps – but were quoted $2,000 to $3,000. So a suitable imported piece was purchased for $358.
  It is made of stained New Zealand pinus radiata – assembled in China.
  Grown here, felled, exported to China, milled and constructed into furniture, and shipped back to New Zealand.
  
  The Chinese do not say “Hey, do I have a bridge to sell to you”, but instead ask “你想买新西兰木电视柜吗?” – “Do you wish to purchase a New Zealand wooden TV cabinet?” and laugh a lot, as another one of them changes his name to Lawrence Eagleburger and adds it to the Kiwibuild register of interest.

        The Russians, oh Batman, that’s so 2016/7 ! In fact, far more “fake news” was put out by Democrat associated groups in the Alabama senatorial election that followed Session’s move to be AG than the Russian ever did. The total spend by “Russian affiliated groups was in the order of $100K, the Trump campaign spent significantly less than the Clinton campaign and yet they were committing $120K per hour at key times.
        
        The Russians had an almost insignificant impact except for one thing – their efforts were very significantly enhanced by the Democrats seizing on the bits that were positive for them which were then amplified further by the MSM.
        
        Fake news is Buzzfeed stating that Cohen’s Mobil was detected in Prague, that there was documentary evidence that Cohen had been ordered to lie to Congress by Trump. It’s Schiff’s claims of having ironclad proof that Trump collided with the Russians – as breathlessly repeat d by CNN, MSNBC, the WaPo, NYT, (proof that he somehow forgot to give to the special counsel, funny that…). It’s basically the MSM who, in the words of David Burge, decide which stories to cover, with a pillow until thy stop moving, in case they contradict the Democrat narrative that they are pushing.
        
        To their credit, a few reporters in the US have woken up a little and articles about how they have been wrong for 2 1/2 years in pushing a fake narrative; but really, for the credibility of the MSM it is rather to little and too late.
        
        Of course you’d get none of that in NZ as the MSM here print only the leftist narrative that can be summed up succinctly as “Orange Man Bad”.

      Fair point although it is hard to have to admit that a large portion of the population is islamophobic ie confuse islam with jihadism. That is like confusing Christianity with the rape and pillage by crusaders or the way Catholics and Anglicans burnt each other or the rape of boys by priests. A good muslim and a good Christian have no connection with the abuse of religion by those seeking political or personal gain. As for relating the Labour Party and Democrats to Socialists/communists when they are both centrist liberal economic centrists, that is just DOT DOT DOT. As for fake news eg Fox News, the Daily Mail etc, editorialization of news is of course a problem, left and right. Necessary to read widely including outside particular social bubbles.

        So what does it say of Jacinda’s belief systems. She grew up Mormon but it wasn’t her choice, and when she was old enough she discarded it, but it wouldn’t be that easy to discard all of it.
        
        Then Jacinda became President of Socialist Youth as shown in those videos. So are you saying that she has discarded those Socialist values too?
        
        Wasn’t it at College? in Morrinsville that Jacinda espoused that she was going to be PM? So every judicious step has been taken is with that goal in mind since? But she hasn’t meant it? It was just a means to an end because she is actually a centrist?

  Perhaps stinkypete but back in the day deep in the bowels of Wellington was what used be the VD Clinic. An old fellow cleaner showed us the umbrella like device that was inserted in the infected manly region them opened to drag out the pus. He also showed us the register with his copperplate style record of attendees.     Greater Christchurch is becoming increasingly affordable and functional.
    
    Remarkably, it is now more affordable than Dunedin … check this years Demographia Survey http://www.demographia.com .
    
    And the gap is growing.
    
    The southern extension and northern motorways come on stream early / mid next year … and later in the year the new Lyttelton cruise terminal opens.

  I recall in the years following the 1981 Springbok tour, when Police had been issued with equipment and training pertaining to the former red squad etc. These methods were still used regularly when entering various licensed premises in the Wellington region. Being an underaged performing musician, my bandmates, friends and I witness a lot of it first hand. I won’t go on about this, but the end result was very bad PR for the police. There was a great deal of public anger and mistrust created by this type of community policing. In my view, none of it was necessary. It alienated constructive police engagement with much of the public. In subsequent years Police worked hard to change their public image, and I believe they did a commendable job in this.
  
  History seems to have been forgotten, however.
  What we are seeing today is potentially worse, and risks once again damaging the reputation of our police. A positive relationship between the public and the police is essential for justice to be done. And law to be enforced fairly. Mutual trust and respect, so people feel free to engage with police. Generally speaking we are all on the same side here. I believe this is particularly important in the current climate.

Well so far she’s alienated the oil and gas industry, farmers, sporting shooters, employers, christians, people who care about free speech and landlords. Soon to come, parents and teachers, motorists, the polytech sector and hospitals.

So, so far the only constituency that still roots for her is the primary teachers union, and urban hipsters. Not sure how easy it will be to bring that in as a majority.

It will get worse when tenants start to wake up to why their flat just got sold, and there are no more available at those price points…

He stated there were only 200 convictions for drug-impaired driving compared to more than 16,000 for drink-driving.

79 fatal drugged-drivers is 112.85 % more, related to 70 fatal drink-drivers
So simply a possible correlation could imply if there are 16,000 drink-driver convictions, there could be 18,057 drugged-drivers – at least, less that mere 200 convictions, so 17,857 undetected drugged-drivers

National says if the Government was serious about reducing the number of deaths on New Zealand roads, it would adopt Wairarapa MP Alastair Scott’s Member’s Bill to introduce roadside drug tests.
He says Genter appears to be refusing to take the advice of officials and experts to adopt roadside saliva testing.

If you have a history of non offensive comments and genuinely add to the debate, I believe you should not need to be moderated. Moderation in my opinion, should be for all new commentators who are yet to prove themselves and for the people who we all know, just like to demonize and offend. We need to keep the debate flowing, if this blog is to thrive. Just my opinion.

If you answer YES to both, then what intervention is most likely? Answer, pro-Trump campaign because of messages of isolationism and pro-Brexit for the same reason. Did it happen?       The occasional wait or partial deletion is a small price to pay for weeding out the absolute garbage that used to be posted by people like Kea and EAD etc.
      
      And look, the moderators have lives too, as should the commenters. Inevitably there will be an occasional gap while nobody is actively approving or there are so many that a couple older ones get buried a few pages back.
      
      What I can see of deletions are pretty consistent with David’s rules. Certainly the group chat for mods and David is pretty liberal with what is allowed.
      
      By and large I think the mods are doing a good job.

Zuckerberg, Trump to snub Ardern’s Paris summit – says Herald headline

Ardern, who is flying to Paris this evening to co-chair the summit with French president Emmanuel Macron, released the names of confirmed attendees this morning.
She did not see it as a snub that Trump, Zuckerberg, and Sandberg were not coming, and said that the attendees were still being finalised and a US representative might still attend.

If the Herald does not read what itself writes, I wonder why they think anyone else should?

A new John Solomon piece in The Hill. The FBI knew well before applying for their FISA warrant that the claims made by Christopher Steele in the so-called Trump dossier were untrue.

The FBI’s sworn story to a federal court about its asset, Christopher Steele, is fraying faster than a $5 souvenir T-shirt bought at a tourist trap.

Newly unearthed memos show a high-ranking government official who met with Steele in October 2016 determined some of the Donald Trump dirt that Steele was simultaneously digging up for the FBI and for Hillary Clinton’s campaign was inaccurate, and likely leaked to the media.

The concerns were flagged in a typed memo and in handwritten notes taken by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kathleen Kavalec on Oct. 11, 2016.

Her observations were recorded exactly 10 days before the FBI used Steele and his infamous dossier to justify securing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page and the campaign’s contacts with Russia in search of a now debunked collusion theory.

She quoted Steele as saying, “Payments to those recruited are made out of the Russian Consulate in Miami,” according to a copy of her summary memo obtained under open records litigation by the conservative group Citizens United. Kavalec bluntly debunked that assertion in a bracketed comment: “It is important to note that there is no Russian consulate in Miami.”

Kavalec, two days later and well before the FISA warrant was issued, forwarded her typed summary to other government officials. The State Department has redacted the names and agencies of everyone she alerted. It is unlikely that her concerns failed to reach the FBI.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), a member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee and ranking member of its Subcommittee on Government Operations, told me late Thursday he had confirmed with U.S. officials that Kavalec’s memo was forwarded to the FBI in the Oct. 13, 2016, email.

“This once again shows officials at the FBI and (Department of Justice) DOJ were well aware the dossier was a lie — from very early on in the process all the way to when they made the conscious decision to include it in a FISA application,” he said. “The fact that Christopher Steele and his partisan research document were treated in any way seriously by our Intelligence Community leaders amounts to malpractice.”

FBI and DOJ officials did not respond to a request for comment.

It’s become obvious now – undeniable fact – that intelligence agencies conspired with the Obama Administration and DNC to try and rig the 2016 election for Hillary. They procured warrants based on information they knew was false and sent numerous spies into the Trump campaign, while people like then-head of the FBI James Comey leaked to the media (he admitted doing so in his testimony). The whole thing was a set-up, and as yet no one has been held accountable. Let’s hope Barr gets to the bottom of this.

  If you want to stay in business, you have to be able to sell your goods or services to people. And people need to have the money to purchase said goods and services.
  Ergo: people must have money (purchasing power) or else the economy grinds to a halt.
  The birthrate is falling in the West and Far East, so once we have nursing robots to look after the elderly, the surplus human population can reduced without granny starving to death.

Just a comment on moderation – the speed (or actually, the lack of it).

I’ll be blunt. I want to see this blog go back to how it operated before 15th March.

People commented and their comment appeared immediately. They would then be either left alone or their comment would get demerits / a strike / whatever.

That was EXCELLENT. There was **nothing** wrong with that system. It was simple, it was common-sense and it **worked**.

I **love** this blog and I don’t want it to die, **strangled** by what is an **unworkable** comment policy.

HOW is it possible to get a “stream” of comments going when each one is delayed by an hour or so? ( And don’t give me the nonsense about “you can comment under your real name” – that is just a **cop-out** ).

Reactions, comments (no doubt delayed) are welcome…….

  This is DPF’s place, so his rules apply. And one of the rules is that he can change the rules when it suits him.
  
  The concern I have is where rules have been, or are currently changed as a result of political / law enforcement pressure. DPF is a fair-minded, and thoroughly descent chap. I simply can’t see him voluntarily implementing this level of moderation. Bluntly, he’s been sat on. And that stinks.

The ground may be shifting under the British political landscape as Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party, already polling in first place for the upcoming European Parliament elections, has now pulled ahead of the governing Conservative Party in polls for general elections to the House of Commons.

The latest major poll of Westminster voting intentions, conducted on the 9th of May by ComRes, shows the Brexit Party up five points at 20 per cent, while the Tories under embattled prime minister Theresa May have sunk four points to 19 per cent.

The opposition Labour Party, under hard-left leader Jeremy Corbyn, is in the lead on 27 per cent, but down six points compared to its previous rating.

He questions whether higher education, as an economic exchange, represents much of an investment anymore—the student defers gratification to reap higher rewards in the future, or the student enjoys a four-year party as a consumption good. Thiel says he originally thought of higher education as consumption masquerading as investment, but now thinks of it as an even crazier combination of concepts: as insurance against failure in life in general, and as a kind of Veblen good that is priced uncompetitively so as to confer status on those who can afford it. This produces a ridiculous situation in which insurance is desirable, not because something disastrous is prudently insured against, but because the disaster would be the ignominy of failing to purchase insurance in the first place. It is effectively a Ponzi scheme. No wonder Thiel calls college administrators subprime mortgage brokers. They get a cut on selling pieces of paper that are only as valuable as we all pretend they are.

Jacinderella Ardern has an opinion piece on the front page of the New York Times explaining the objects of the conference she and Macron are convening.

It includes this:

” … New Zealand will present a call to action in the name of Christchurch, asking both nations and private corporations to make changes to prevent the posting of terrorist content online, to ensure its efficient and fast removal and to prevent the use of live-streaming as a tool for broadcasting terrorist attacks. We also hope to see more investment in research into technology that can help address these issues.

“The Christchurch call to action will build on work already being undertaken around the world by other international organisations. It will be a voluntary framework that commits signatories to counter the drivers of terrorism and put in place specific measures to prevent the uploading of terrorist content.”

Ardern says early in her article: “Our aim may not be simple, but it is clearly focused: to end terrorist and violent extremist content online.”

The problem is how is “terrorist and violent extremist content” to be defined, and who is going to do the defining? Who will police uploading in NZ? Will the Film Censor hire a few hundred bureaucrats at taxpayers’ expense?

Will the conference call for a ban on encrypted messaging? That would seem a likely control tool.

Ardern adds that the “tech industry” says it is open to working more closely with “us” on this issue. How can she count on that when so many of the good technology brains back open freedom on the internet?
