CGT is a fundamentally UNFAIR tax.

If it was fair, it would provide tax rebates for capital losses. But it doesn’t.

Instead that state legislates its way to 100% participation in gains I make on risks, and 0% downside associated with any losses.

With my money.

After I’ve earned it, after first paying income tax, consumption tax, then providing for my family.

CGT is a fundamentally UNFAIR tax.

  It is an unfair tax because it is a tax on inflation and the government through its own fiscal policies and its monetary policy (via the Reserve Bank) are where the CPI, RPI or any other index is. So, the govt helps determine your gain and then tells you have to pay tax on it. Certainly NOT FAIR!

    Fair point, it’s important to remember that the reserve bank is mandated to keep a minimum rate of inflation as well as control the maximum rate.

      Because you are ownly allowed one house in CGT. Any house inherited or part of, will be subject to a CGT! Because there are a lot of stale, pale white people dying in the future, (I don’t know what the uptake of private ownership is in other races), they will be the ones to pay the most in a CGT. This certainly raises a question of SHOULD YOU BUY A HOUSE. If you are going to be caught in a GCT, why bother, other than for certainty of tenure. If there is less private ownership, more rentals, subsidized housing and less CGT and more expense for the government. Which raises the question is Cullens Dead Granny Tax going to be worth it?

        Local government will be building more “state housing”, so just a bit more extension of that.
        
        Some Councils already provide “pensioner flats” Another extension of that could easily be drafted.
        
        It will all be called sustainable, no cost to tax payer, or rate payer, as rents pay for all everything, and what a wonderful world we live in. 🙂
        
        All at favourable rates, for ones with a great lifestyle, and a minimum of assets.

        Your kids rent, until your retirement.
        You sell EQUAL shares in your house to all your kids and live in it rent free, till you both die.
        The children haven’t inherited it, they own it. Whats more it is their primary home.
        Sell it piece by piece to each other.
        This may work better when selling life style blocks. Subdivide to below the land threshold size.

        But, RW Capitalist at 10:18am, subdividing to below the land threshold size means individual blocks no bigger than 4,500sqm, roughly 1.1 acres, so not much capacity for a ‘hobby farm’, more likely very large lawns to mow!
        
        Moreover, Council and Legal charges involved in subdivision to achieve the ends that you envisage should not be taken lightly.

      I doubt if Cullen is now against a CGT. I have found this notion of tax on “unearned incomes” a current meme among socialist international. It’s a tax to bring fairness in theory and administrative enormity and expense in practise.

  Yes and Grant Robertson doesn’t like the Reid Research poll that has come out saying that , according to Grant anyone can get that result as it depends on the questions that are asked. this coming from Labour that continually uses polls that use leading questions to acquire the results that they prefer to con the public to their way of thinking, what a hypocrite the Finance Minister is.

  Under communist rule, everyone was dependent on the state. The state seized 100% of your labour, and 100% of your property, and then in theory at least, dispensed to each what they needed. Didn’t happen of course, but that’s another story.
  
  CGT is the next step in a long, slow march through independence and capitalism, and like so many previous steps, its implementation becomes permanent. Well, until there’s a revolution.
  
  Successive socialist governments, and I include recent Nats in that, have marched us forward, growing the state by eating into the fruit of our labour via income taxes, and then enriching themselves via taxes on essentials – first fuel, and then more brazenly through GST.
  
  Digression here. Remember how GST was sold to the masses? It was sold on the basis of reduced income taxes, so it was simply a shift from taxing production towards taxing consumption. Yeah, nah.
  
  Then along came so-called middle-class welfare, increasing dependence on the state while sluicing still more private money back through an inefficient state machine.
  
  With both those production-based tax sources creaking, and in the finest of communist traditions, it’s now time to go after private property. CGT is the natural next step as the state begins plundering your private wealth. It is a tax on your independence.
  
  If you have worked and have some excess, after first paying income/consumption taxes, and then having enough to provide food and shelter for you and/or your family, then that wealth – your wealth – represents independence from the state’s clutches. Independence is an anathema to our Marxist and pseudo-Marxist leaders. The independent can’t be easily manipulated. You think for yourself. You are the enemy.

  My position on Capital Gains Tax is this:
  
  We should have a comprehensive capital gains tax (many capital gains are already taxed, but not “incidental” ones)
  There should be no exemptions, including the family home. To do so will just encourage tax avoidence by giving each family member a home etc.
  Other tax rates (income and company rates) must drop by at least as much as the extra revenue a CGT would generate for the Government.
  
  My personal preference is a land tax… it would be far cheaper to administer and solve 80% of the issues that a CGT attempts to address.

    I agree regarding land tax, cheap to administer (same as rates), and encourages efficient use of land – like less asset rich economically inactive people living in middle of cities displacing workers outwards and creating worse strain on road infrastructure. And less land banking.
    
    CGT with no exemptions is okayish, but does not touch the wealthy who never need to sell land/assets (just accumulate more in trusts etc).

Yesterday hubby and I went for our annual flu jabs. Hubby who is over 65 also had the fully-funded “Zostavax” shingles vaccine for those between 65 – 80? years of age. The nurse who administered the vaccine told us after this year taxpayer funding has been cut for everyone over 65 years old. If you want to take advantage of the free Zostavax vaccine and you are over 65 get it this year or you will need to pay, I believe $250.00.
Having suffered a bad case of Shingles I suggest you talk to your GP if you are unsure.

  Interesting. Last year when I got the shingles vaccine I was told by the receptionist at the surgery that it was thanks to the Labour Government that it was now free.
  Now it seems to not be free any more from next year.
  Clearly the free vaccine was a decision made by National.

Someone posted a few weeks ago that funding for joint replacement operations has been halved, and did I hear right that prescription charges have increased? What other funding has quietly been engineered under our noses? Health cuts seem an odd thing to target by the CoL when they are strongly promoting their upcoming “Well-being” budget, but then it isn’t about the people, it is about the Labour Party.

  I feel for you, I have had two bouts of shingles it can be a very bad experience to live through.
  Had it in the eye and they say it can blind you.
  I was lucky just left with buggered nerve endings, but eyes fine.
  If anyone over 65 can get the jab, just do it while you can. Government is crazy to cut funding to this, a couple hundred bucks is nothing compared with what they will spend with someone being infected.
  One in three will get shingles in some form.

    Same here Greg. My eye survived too after treatment but I still feel the nerve endings prickling occasionally around my eyebrows after 7 years. My shingles resulted in being admitted to hospital as I ended up in a complete mess.
    As you say, it is crazy to cut funding for shingles.

    Also had shingles in my early 40’s. It slowly spread, following a nerve up the side of the face and arcing over coming close to an eye. The Doctor told me it was a possibility of losing sight in the eye and the topical lotions seemed for me to barely do anything. Fortunately it stopped, as the Doctor must have also hoped. I think I would have had my eye ball removed if it had got there just to deal with the pain, an incessant itch.
    
    One can also get shingles internally affecting organs.
    So it is well worth getting the vaccine.

    So many cases of shingles end up as neuralgia for which there is no cure and painkillers are largely ineffective. The pain is excruciating and a lifechanger.

  I have seen someone with post herpeptic neuralgia – basically a patch of skin where nerves endings are damaged that remains excruciatingly painful for months or years or even decades afterwards. This person is no sook but they were on narcotics (tramadol) to deal with the pain and really spaced out. a bad multi-year case is suicide level stuff. Fuck that. Get the vaccine, it is a one time thing, but only after you are (I think) 50 or 55?

    My elderly mother had neuralgia. It is very debilitating. She went through several operations, the last one to insert a buffer between nerve and vein which seems to have largely worked…

  Looking at the Pharmac website it appears the shingles vaccine will remain funded for 65 year olds however those aged 66-80 will only get the free vaccine until 31 March 2020 as part of a catch up programme. So I guess if you are over 65 get it before Mar 31.

  The MSD Zostavax vaccine is only about 50% effective (but better than nothing of course). There is a new recombinant vaccine now approved by the FDA and which will soon be available to replace Zostavax. The new vaccine is over 90% effective, and in the short and long term will be more cost effective.
  If you have had the free vaccine now, you can still have the new vaccine when it becomes available – I can’t predict whether it will be free though.

    no active shingles at administration time
    2 x intramuscular doses, 2 – 6 months apart
    wait 2 months after previous Zostavax
    90% or better efficacy

Excuse the repeat comment – but this is a general debate issue IMO: Yvette made a good point and it is a point I’ve made myself. The first thing Labour did upon being appointed was engage in an ‘open and transparent’ protracted money-grab of tax-payer cash by setting up committees to formulate and fund their election campaigns going forward. It was their way for accessing state-funded electioneering without all that messy process of actually getting legislation so that it would need to be actually ‘open and transparent’ They grabbed the cash in plain sight. This cynical use of our money by Labour, to fund their next election, and pay for their PR, deserves a post of its own, Yvette.

  Lee, it was not only a grab to fund policy/manifesto formulation for elections going forward, but it has also shown itself to be a mechanism to join the dots and give substance to the lack of policy formulation in the previous 9 years and for when they entered government in 2017.

ACT was the only party in select committee m to recommend the Arms Bill not be progressed.

Their minority report from the ACT Party is really worth reading and it points out some concerning aspect of the process, including Police officials saying they’re unable to answer certain questions upon Ministerial direction.

The ACT Party report makes the excellent point that the Select Committee has a constitutional role as testing the Government’s ideas and not just acting as a doormat.

I am pretty disappointed in the National Party over this matter too. I will now certainly vote ACT in the election, and I encourage others to strongly consider doing the same as ACT has showed itself as a guardian of process and democracy in the face of political hype.

  National has done its usual thumb sucking “we would have administered the process better” bullshit. And Labour is gleefully stripping away rights, due process and property to appear to be doing something.
  
  I will never vote National again. This process has been a real eye opener for me. I never believed that our Parliament would be so supine.

  Yup, I agree. I emailed act on the fire arms issue and got a reply within a few hours that showed someone had actually read my email and responded accordingly. I do believe that the stupid gun law stuff may give Act new life. Now I know David Seymor is not everyone’s cup of tea, but at least they stood up to this fascist destruction of our democracy. I encourage all to at least read their policies (although firearm stuff is hidden under rural New Zealand).

I am very confused. It seems that the police are calling for smaller ANZAC services in such places as Matakana to be scrapped in favour of larger ceremonies so that those attending can receive police protection. But who an earth are the ANZAC service attendees, there to acknowledge the sacrifices made by former servicemen and women who died for our country, to be protected from?

According to the media the only dangerous folk inhabiting the dark ant-social recesses of our nation are ‘white supremacists’ who are surely the last people to present a threat to such occasions as ANZAC Day. Or are there other sinister forces that the police are concerned about and about whom we are being told nothing whatsoever.

Does anyone have any insights?

      No, trust me, they would not consider it an honour. It would be an embuggerrance, asking them to do something that is not their job, with insufficient numbers.
      
      Think about it – there are literallly hundreds of parades around the country, how many NZDF personnel per parade would be needed? Keep in mind the Regular Force has only two very understrength battalions, and the Territorial Force is a joke. Then think about the legalities – would the soldiers be armed? What rules of engagement would they be given?
      
      It is the police’s job to provide domestic security, but that does not mean issuing vague threat assessments resulting in knee jerk cancellations of important events.

I don’t believe the Crusaders will end up changing their name. There are clearly a lot of people who feel strongly about the issue on both sides. But the bottom line is this – the pro-change crowd can’t actually force a name change.

You see articles talking about “pressure mounting”, but what exactly does that mean? As far as I can tell just a lot of social media posts and click-tivism. And if the goal is to shame Crusaders supporters into a name change, it seems to be failing miserably. Plenty of Crusaders supporters are being very open in wanting to keep the name, with no guilt whatsoever. And these will overwhelmingly be the people who actually buy tickets and watch the games – the people whose opinion materially affects the franchise.

The Crusaders can simply ride this out. And the independent review they have commissioned gives them a perfect excuse to put off making any change.

  The questions to ask include what is hoped to achieve by changing the name? Who is offended and since when? Where is the evidence or is this just knee-jerk virtual signalling?
  If a name change is enforced, what would that mean for any books or films that are accessible in shops, at the cinema or on-line ((Netflix) that has any association with Crusades, Knights Templar, Holy Grail, Ghengis Khan etc or would access to this material just be banned in Christchurch?
  It Feelz like a change in name would be the same as wanting a zero carbon emission economy but still driving around in cars, flying in planes and using hand-held technology to communicate.. it just does not compute.
  And if those that want to go down this route are consistent, why are they not calling for the banning of the Haka.. it’s purpose is multi-use but includes intimidating opposition and putting fear into those facing it.. exemplified by the throat cutting action (box cutters anyone?).

    My wife was called up for jury service at the Manukau District Court a few months ago.
    I went along to help her. There was a continual stream of court cases going on at about 17 or 18 courts. A couple of cases required juries and the charge sheet for one was a litany of sexual depravity.
    Not a court reporter in sight. Nothing in the media that I saw about anything that happened in those courts in the week we were there, including that the staff were taking industrial action with a work to rule.
    Maybe the Labour youth camp case has fallen off the radar.
    If you’re that interested in what’s happening regarding a specific case you can look up the court records on the internet, I believe.

    I happened to be down the local last Saturday night and the subject became Jacindas various actions after the event. There was 10 of us and ages ranged between 20 and 50 male and female, To a person everyone was appalled at the numerous times she was in in Hijab, the national call to pray and the gun law rushing though. But the thing that caused the most venom was the subsequent actions of the MSM and how they are trying to force feed the people a narrative that they didn’t want. So I was definitely left with the impression that the government is not as popular as the MSM would have us believe and that its only going to get worse for the CoL.

Whatever people think, the bulk of the increse in “value” of a property over a reasonable period of time is no more than inflation and a reflection of the changes in pricing of “new builds”.

Anyone who sincerely believes that a person will happily sell an investment property or business without “adjusting” the sale price to reflect any tax is not very clever. Without that they would possibly lose money so why would an investor “invest” to lose money?

If the tax is applied at the proposed rate of 30+ % then how many years would a property have to be held to just achieve “break even”. Certaily well above the current 5 year “brightline” limit.

Still, we have a government with limited to non existant knowledge of economics elected by 37% of a population who also have zero “money” knowledge and put in place by a spiteful old man supported by a pack of white male hating rabid dogs.

    Plus, any CGT will not collect very much for quite a period of tie so the “reductions” would be mmany tears away unless the coalition wanted to ramp up the deficit which I very much doubt. It will all be “tomorrow” promises…

In 1914, and again in 1940, Germany got a bit too big for its boots and overran its borders threatening the rest of Europe. Millions of soldiers from the Empire, including ANZACs, got on ships and sailed half way around the world to help put them back where they belong.

We rightly recognise what they did for us and the ANZAC name flies high.

Rewind to the 1100s. Rampaging Muslims overran Christian cities and lands and sacked Christian cities in the Mediterranean area. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers from all across Europe got on ships or marched long miles to restore those lands.

That’s what the Crusaders were. Pretty much the same sort of thing the ANZACs were.

We should revere them.

Now of course not everything the Crusaders (or for that matter the ANZACs) did was right. There were some dubious events. Still, if you zoom out and look at the big picture they generally did the right thing.

This attack on the Crusaders name is just more white bashing.

    We can all interpret the motives of the “crusaders”
    (sometimes, maybe often base in my view, particularly the later crusades) but it would be desperately unwise to deny that Pope Urban II did in fact call for a religious crusade to restore the Holy Lands from conquest, and that by and large, that is why people went on crusade.

Surely the Commission should produce a vetted version with a panel of appropriate experts defining those portions that are Internet meme or factionally irrelevant, and redacting unacceptable parts such as justification of killing children – that being, for example, indicated by a brief one sentence heading and left a as backed out section to show the space allocated to it.

    If we’re now required to accept abandonment or down-scaling of our ANZAC traditions for the reasons put forward, let’s also accept that we need to double the size of our Police Force – without delay, and regardless of the cost – in addition to taking stronger action against criminal and subversive elements in our society.

Calls by the current childrens’ commissioner, Andrew Beecroft for a specialised Maori childrens’ commissioner after another Maori child was injured by violence. Will it make any difference? NO! While Maori are approximately 16% of the population, half of the children in care are Maori and more than 70% of Maori children are abused. How do you prevent these large angry blokes brought up in violent households themselves, who have never learnt that violence is not appropriate and taking his annoyance and frustrations out on a grizzling little child is never okay. He has no love for the children, never learnt empathy and doesn’t want the interruption. Women do it too.
Until Maori families accept that their culture condones violence and anger and sort their own out, that they hold the solution, there will be no improvement in the stats. Another lobbyist is just paying another layer of bureaucracy.
An expert from the Maori Council stating “it is a failure of the system and more funding is required” will change nothing.

Amy Adams spoke.
Showed the stark contrast between National and Labour.
First question answered…….National will UNEQUIVOCALLY REPEAL and CGT legislation if elected.
She spoke with great knowledge and detail on CGT.
Pointing out, especially, how complex it is, especially if there are exemptions.
With Labour, it’s all about the feels and fair.
Statements that are NOT backed up with any evidence or statistics or FACTS of any kind.
If National talk like this and get the message out regarding all the other portfolios.
as CoL have screwed up EVERY portfolio to one degree or another.
CoL has no chance at the next election.

  * All developments will be timed and choreographed for optimal political effect; much of it paid for by the taxpayer and / or various ‘sponsors’ seeking favourable political patronage.

Yesterday, that liberal lightening rod of an ignorant commentator Simon Wilson wrote yet another comment column for the Herald on an Auckland transport subject. He usually writes such columns when has been fed (leaked) a policy position from within Auckland Council or AT.
This time his column was on Generation Zero’s proposal to lower or flatten Auckland fares to encourage an up take in public transport use. The proposal is under consideration by AT and Auckland Council. Instead of dismissing it for what it is, AT and Council are “considering it”.

The theory goes, lower the fares and there will be an uptake in passengers. The answer is yes & no and the result an expensive shambles for Auckland and the taxpayer.

Yes, if fares are lowered there will be a limited up take in use in most but not all areas. Reality travelling by public transport doesn’t suit everybody, so a significant number of people will continue to travel by private vehicle irrespective of price. Secondly, if public transport is over crowded, the public will choose other options.

Yes, AT and the operators could acquire more buses, but why? People will catch the buses initially, but over crowded buses results in people going back to their cars. Then AT and the companies are left with under utilized buses being driven around empty or parked up. Finally, the bus companies are struggling to hire enough drivers for existing services today, so where will they find more drivers for this proposal and to meet their Employment Relations Act commitments on 6th May?

So such a policy would expensive shambles, that ends up costing the fare payer, the ratepayer and the taxpayer.

So, this leftard proposal deserves all the consideration of being thrown immediately in the circular file under one’s desk. However, sadly Auckland lacks transport strategists (who know what they are talking about) in senior advisory positions. However, it is awash with politicians, political advisors and political bureaucrats who want to add their paw prints to Auckland’s transport. Such people should all be rounded up and sent to Antarctica to sort out the transport problem there (& take Wilson with them).

And to those who support this proposal, u have 20 plus years experience in the public transport sector in NZ, Europe and the UK. To my knowledge, Wilson has no experience except being a passenger of PT.

  Rich Prick, it is not just a case of scaling back the project. The problems are more fundamental. NZTA are struggling to write a passable business case with a BCR that will be positive.
  
  It is so bad, those participating have the twin problems of Twyford & Jones wanting a positive Business Case, while knowing if they produce a positive Business Case they know it would not stand up to proper Treasury scrutiny or a Judicial Review.
  
  As for the value of the scheme being $6billion, that number is as reliable as $2.4billion (the original CRL number without extra rolling stock). Neither number is on the same page as to where these projects will end up.
  
  One final question, where does this leave JAG and the Greens – this scheme is the brain child of JAG, her former private sector employer and her mates at the Transport Blog, none of whom should have any credibility with regards to transport matters in my opinion.

Did anyone hear Hosking interview Jacinda this morning? From what I get is there were long pauses when she was arguing that some polls show support for the CGT, and that Shane Jones could shag a sheep on the Speaker’s Table in Parliament and get nothing more than a “tut tut” from our dear “Leader”, so desperate is labour not to upset the party that is actually calling the shots in New Zealand. I hope Labour supporters start to understand this. Jacinda is just the pretty face fronting Winston’s demands.

A person in Malmö who ordered the delivery home to the door received notice from the distribution company UPS that the company no longer supplies to private addresses in the district of Rosengård because of the risk of being exposed to robbery or other crimes, reports Sydsvenskan.

An employee at the company’s customer service tells the newspaper that the home run in Rosengård was stopped two months ago, when drivers were attacked. Even in some areas in Stockholm, UPS has stopped the delivery of parcels.

Postnord delivers packages to Rosengård, but the delivery in the district has been temporarily stopped on some occasions, for the safety of the personnel. Some areas in Stockholm have also had temporary delivery stops in recent years, says Mathias Krümmel, head of production in Postnord.

No packages in Seved

Today there is only one area in the country where Postnord does not run home packages, and it is Seved in Malmö. There, companies and residents can collect packages at delivery points.

– The postmen can go there without being threatened, but if we drive there with the package car they will be threatened. Well, it has to do with the value, what is in the packages, guesses Mathias Krümmel.

He notes that security issues in some areas affect all companies that drive out goods.

  sea level rise (corrected for subsidence using high accuracy GPS) is 1-2mm/yr around NZ. There is if anything signs of deceleration in the rise (getting smaller with time). Only sensible economic response is to require floor levels of new builds in lowest lying areas to be a few 100mm higher. If individuals on lowest lying land are really worried then they can spend $5-10k adding 2-500mm of topsoil to their sections to buy themselves 1-200 years of protection.

  They claim they should have “platform” status rather than “publishing” status. ie they should not be held accountable for what appears on their site.

  That’s in place because ardern lied her way through the interview with Hosking and is now furiously backtracking on the Crusader’s name change plan.
  
  CGT is a millstone and her stance makes it unsalvageable so the only way this coalition can survive is buy trying to destroy National.
  
  You can see the odd commenters on here who swear they’re “true blue through and through” and then p[roceed to criticise Simon Bridges.
  
  A “true blue through and through” is a policy person and not into “presidential style” stardust worshipping. National have the policies, the coalition have the “working groups” to mask the fact that they spent 9 years troughing.
  
  The left supporters that do raise their ugly heads never defend “labour”s ideas” with argument just flick crap about. They never comment on the disorder in the ranks of the greens and “what’s in it for wynston’s” party which really has to be a worry as it must be deeply disturbing to them.
  
  Expect more anti Simon and anti National articles from now on until ardern, who has spent half this day lying on all issues, is forced to call “time” on this coalition.

A couple of weeks ago it was reported that Stan Semenoff Logging t/a Kataia Transport was to lose its TSL licence over “116 ‘speed and traffic-related offences’ over a four-year period”. The company won a temporary reprieve in the High Court but the accusations have now turned out to be false.

…..”instead of the 116 offences the agency claimed, the business only had nine traffic offence notices in four years”……
