    A few problems.
    Companies going under (minimum wage pressures).
    Not enough workers (CoL promise to cut immigration, no reqts on beneficiaries, ’emergency’ handouts for all).
    Govt contracts based on price (need money for NZFirst ‘loyalty’).
    Business Confidence (CGT, more regulation, Labour laws, increased taxes, levies…)
    
    First we break it, then we announce a working group/accord/committee to fix it.
    
    As an aside, I see the Labour/MSM machine is cranking up for the 10 metre advance into Pike River. Much fanfare to come.
    You have to admire their Comms machine.

      The construction sector is not dumb. It will be quietly looking to have the government solve some of the sector’s more pressing problems. At little cost to themselves, no doubt.
      
      Skills shortages – more skilled migrants and more skills training. Taxpayer pays.
      
      Big project risks – if government project (many are) risk gets shared more. Taxpayer pays.
      
      Residential development – Kiwibuild, state housing, first home buyer top ups. Taxpayer pays.
      
      Cost of materials. Not sure how but bet taxpayer pays somehow.
      
      Of course the sector will be be involved. Did I mention taxpayer pays?
      
      Meantime the sector promises to be more respectful and look to its culture.
      
      I wonder if Ms Ardern has ever met an actual tradie, as opposed to the big cheeses in suits (and occasionally hard hats).

  I hear that for the photo shoot she practiced what facial expression to use.
  
  When the boyfriend heard about the publicity she was getting he quickly skinned a raw fish with his teeth to upstage her.

  I don’t understand why the commitment is necessary. The purpose of the emissions trading scheme was to price carbon. Once that is done, the generators should be left to produce power as cheaply as possible.

    Not really, it’s around 12p/Kwh or around 22c, NZ is is about 25c/Kwh.
    
    However line charges in the UK are around NZ$150pa whereas here it’s up to $900pa.
    
    It’s the infrastructure that costs not the ‘leccy and here we don’t have enough consumers to reduce the per capita cost and our population is much more widely sprea out.

Went to dinner and listened to a wife wax lyrical about Cindy and how she has grown to be a great leader of not only our country but the wider world.
Spent the next 15 minutes tell her exactly what she has done for me over the last year or so.
She left,stormed out when I challenged her to the fact that she has lied,withheld and run for cover on any issue she opens her big trap on.
Got a clap from the 2 tables either side of me.

Quiet trip home,but worth it.

  I am beginning to think that some women vote for another woman because of her sex not her ability. Looking around at some world leaders – Merkel, May, Ardern,Aung san suu kyi, La Garde,Hilary Clinton, Clarke, and the absolute stuff ups they have made or are making proves that both sexes produce effective & ineffective leaders.       No one is saying she is wrong defending them , amongst her grandiose claims is that she put heads of state on trial . That proved to be nonsense, her delusions of grandeur also led her to claim to be the first female minister of defence which is an outrageous lie.
      
      She also downplayed Steve Bikandas role in the genocide by claiming he was merely a “ pop singer”.

Proof the world is full of suckers and the world is full of rip of merchants.

On Saturday, I was in a big name supermarket, when something caught my eye. For the price of $3.79 you can buy a 200gram bag of a certain iconic Kiwi brand of chips that are “Gluten Free”.

What is wrong with this you may ask?
Well they might as well package them as sugar free, nut free, wheat free, dairy free or any other band wagon. Because, it is a rip off con and a fraud. As, unless they have genetically modified NZ potatoes to contain gluten, every bag of chips is already gluten free. This food fad is playing on the gullible and the ill informed and leads me to think….

No wonder we end up with the governments we do, when people can be so easily conned to part with their money. Or put another way, when you give idiots the vote, you get governments like the current bunch.

  Not sure, but I think that some of the flavoring additives used may contain gluten, so hence why they can get away with this crap. Of course, you can also buy just ready salted instead…
  But yes, definitely agree on the great gluten free con. I have friends who are coeliac and know the issues if they eat gluten, but that is a tiny portion of those going gluten free.
  Saying that, I know many people who claim to be and feel so much healthier after going gluten free, so maybe there is something to the claim that too much gluten is bad. Personally, I don’t know, so I can’t really comment.

    Dafix: Apparently there are a whole 2% of people who are actually gluten intolerant…the other 40% who think they are simply blame their obesity on gluten…a generation ago it was all down to “glands”
    
    And then there are those who make a great noise in cafes about what is and isn’t gluten free…and then order a beer to go with their food. (Beer contains gluten derived from the malted barley used to make it)

However, the worrying thing is, as the Reid Research poll highlighted last week, circa 10% of the voters are those soft swing voters that supported Key, but have swung to the empathetic Jacinda. Sadly, it is down to convincing 5% of that group that stands between National and 3 more years of the CoL.
        
        Given that same group of voters, would happily believe that a plate of cos lettuce with mayonnaise is a gluten free, dairy free Ceasar Salad and happily pay a premium for it, what hope them voting against the feels of the CoL?

      That 2% figure means only 2% test positive on the particular test they use – it’s not representative of the full range of issues in the population with wheat. It took me a while a to discover that it wasn’t the gluten in bread that affected me, but the enzymes they put in baked products, most of which don’t have to be listed on the packet. Thus many people are sensitive to other ingredients in wheat-based products and assume it’s gluten. For more information read about the Chorleywood bread making method which involves the use of ‘improvers’ to reduce rising times. That’s why as children we never saw these problems.

  Yes, I saw that. Proper chips should have just potatoes and fat. Some flavoured ones, though might have wheat in them, so it would be reasonable to mark them gluten free I guess. And then there are the ‘chips’ that are not even made from potatoes.

  Technically they are good, but in practice they are too expensive to build in highly regulated west. They take 10+ years, and need army of highly skilled workers to work in unpopular/remote locations, similar to oil and gas and mining industries with their high wage costs. The power they create is (as a result) way too expensive.
  
  Small modular factory produced reactors might fix this problem, but maybe not.

Today is the day the COLL cabinet signs their collective death warrant when they sign off on CGT. A massive opportunity for National to show the public how this will prove to be a huge new tax wedge, won’t generate the promised revenue, wont be revenue neutral and will cost the economy dear.Collateral damage can also be inflicted with Stephen Joyces fiscal hole, Jnr Drs and likely Teachers strikes.

  I agree, but Bridges is right to wait until election year, as Key did in 2008. By then, Peters will be well on the way to shitting in the coalition bed, as he did with Bolger and with Clark.
  
  However Bridges shouldn’t rule out NZF completely; merely make it a condition that National would not do a deal with a Peters-led party.

  Bridges is a problem. His inept public persona, in combination with his religious conservatism puts too many people off. If that doesn’t do it, the leaked phone call with Jami-Lee Ross will finish the job nicely. His awkward attempts at swearing and interaction were cringeworthy.
  
  He is an excellent minister and would make a good Deputy PM, but he can’t front a political party if it is to be electorally successful imo.
  
  I have no idea who in hell I’ll vote for unless something changes.

I see Fletchers are leading the governments latest talk fest, the Building Accord. The company that has a lot to answer for the EQC repair debacle, contractual over-runs like the Christchurch Justice Precinct, and numerous other delayed contracts around NZ.
The fact they have significant interest in BRANZ, hence controlling the approval of alternative cheaper materials, and themselves now controlling around 80% of building material manufacture in NZ. As such, they have significant influence in material cost of building so to have Fletchers seeking the answers to our building problems is a bit like the poacher becoming game keeper.

  We are told that major commercial competitors in an industry that is critical to our national economy are planning to act more cooperatively – or less aggressively – among themselves. That plan could result in some dissipation of the economic and structural benefits of genuine competition.
  
  In my personal view PM Ardern, for all the advice available to her, would have no real understanding of these “Accord” matters which will ultimately have to comply with black-letter law in the Commerce Act. Rather than lend her own and her Government’s support publicly to a more ‘co-operative’ spirit among major commercial competitors, she should take note and remain conscious of possible detrimental effects on consumers that could arise from any anti-competitive collaboration by producers.
  
  I hope that the Commerce Commission, which is charged with enforcing competition provisions within the Commerce Act, is keeping a very close eye on developments in this context. It might even seek quietly to warn the PM of the legal implications of her appearing to accept or sanction less competition within a major New Zealand industry.

Brash told the Herald he didn’t know the pamphlet was being distributed again.
“I wrote a chapter in the book that the pamphlet refers to but … I am surprised it is being distributed now because the book came out two or three years ago.” [prior to November, 2015] Brash said he vaguely recalled the pamphlet but not the detail. “I had no involvement in the recent distribution at all but the idea that the book is relevant to Christchurch is patent nonsense.”

The relevance now to the Christchurch Mosque Massacres may be that – Andrew Little is overseeing a review of hate speech in the wake of the terrorist attacks …
It will be better to have more than just one example.

That this pamphlet is being distributed again may be co-incidence, or just selectively “helpful”. (Eons ago, in NZBC television troubles, a Kelburn Street would be pamphleted – one in the letterbox of the Minister of Broadcasting, and one each to two houses either side)

Little … told the Herald his view was the pamphlet is racist. “It peddles myths about pre-European Maori society that historical scholarship does not bear out. If it demonstrates anything, it is that the author of it is an ignorant fool.”

But, it is noted – “Little was not claiming the pamphlet incites, or threatens violence, or that it was defamatory. Those would be legitimate reasons to curtail speech, but Little is claiming the Government needs the power to shut down speech that is foolish.” – David Seymour

The authors of “One Treaty, One Nation” are Hugh Barr, Don Brash, Mike Butler, Reuben Chapple, Peter Cresswell, Bruce Moon, John Robinson and David Round.
So 8 authors

Israel Folau’s post, in the ‘slogan’ panel, lists: drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters : eight sinful persuasions.

And the Galatians text which Folau attached also added uncleanness, lasciviousness, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, revelings and such like – so 13 more to make 21 categories that “Hell awaits”, although the text actually says: “… that they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”, which of course is something different – like separation from “God” which is a psychological no-brainer.

But of eight “One Treaty, One Nation” authors, the media select “Don Brash” to smear, just as, of the 21 hell-bound they select “homosexuals” only.

I actually dislike dishonesty more, I think, than I hate “hate” speech
And after all, can speech that is thoroughly honest – in presentation and content – be hate speech?
Except in the minds of those who will decide what we may say.

All standard COL MO as the house is in recess and it will be “delivered” along with the longest weekend break in NZ. Ironical since it is the only time that worshipers take a visible gift from their place of worship.

Be prepared. The Hate Speech Laws are coming and like the CGT they will start out appearing to be mild and then be ramped up over time.

The strategy with both Hate Speech Laws and the CGT is to get the citizens used to the idea and then turn the screws bit by bit until it is too late.

Think history. Think of the regimes in the past where the citizens were slowly turned by propaganda until they accepted the most heinous laws.

This is the agenda of Labour and the Greens.

To punish any speech that they dont agree with and to redistribute wealth from those they say are rich to those they say are poor all the time ensuring their own wealth is enhanced.

      I judge immigrants on their actions – moving to another country implies you consider your host country to be better place to live than your country of origin. There are no laws in NZ requiring an immigrant to continue complying with laws & customs of origin nor that you may not so comply. By speaking the host countries language, adopting local dress and predominant cultural norms you integrate and become accepted as the host population observes the immigrants genuine desires to become a Kiwi. By maintaining the country of origins Language, dress and customs you demonstrate that your real desire is for your host to provide the things unavailable in country of origin whilst retaining the things from your origin and expecting your host to accept a l change to their culture and thereby become a target for host citizens to oppose and reject you – just as many Muslim countries reject western Dress Religious Beliefs and Culture. If non western type countries maintain this attitude and lack of tolerance they and their expatriates should not be surprised when their new host country adopts the same attitude.

There is no way the COL can fix the construction industry. This is effectively nationalisation. Has Fletchers run out of steam and is now ready for a govt buyout? Are all building supplies to be state controlled and contract prices too? Effectively all workers in the industry would become quasi state employees. MOW?

Private contractors must be anathama to communists–too much freedom. That’s at the heart of KiwiBuild becoming buyer of last resort in the new housing sector. Private contractors take personal risks: the COL underwriting housing passes those risk on to the reluctant remaining taxpayers.

This COL must be stopped before further damage is inflicted.

  Prior to the election the industry (domestic) was as close to capacity as you can get.
  
  Commercially it was pretty much over capacity which is why so many projects were running behind time and over budget.
  
  Only 2 things will impact capacity, more immigrant tradesmen or more factory built houses.
  
  Nothing else will work despite ridiculous “hard hat” photo ops and hurty faces pumped out by the pathetic organisation we call “media”.

      That is correct but with or without “fixes” for the RMA, we still don’t have spare capacity.
      
      Around here, just over the border actually, someone wanted to build a rammed earth and staw bale house.
      
      The council declined their application as they wanted to see one build before they would accept them into the district plan. Catch 22…or that was what the builder told me.
      
      Another wanted to place a “factory built” home on a site and again the caoncil blocked it because they could “sign” it off without doing all the mandated “inspections”.
      
      You can defeat these numpties but it takes time and money and grit so why bother.

  This idea that National didn’t build houses is a load of bull (generally speaking here).
  Alot of residential was going in the problem was it lagged behind immigration.
  Now that this government is slowing down immigration they are finding that prices are stagnating and the number of residentials is slowing down as well as there is no longer a demand for more housing.
  So ofc we will see construction companies falter as the tide starts going out and the global economy slows.
  Too bad for Labour who know fuck all about anything outside their taxpayer offices. Maybe they will think carefully about their policies next time they run for government after getting the arse from an angry public.

Tiger Woods; what a story.

I lost a lot of respect for Woods when the rumours of his serial infidelity broke, as did many. He went to some pretty dark places in the aftermath of that, probably hitting his nadir when he was picked up by the police in his car, and out of his head on prescription drugs.

Before his latest surgery, there was a fair chance he would never play again, but over the last year Woods has gradually got his game back together. He was in contention at the last two Majors of 2018, then won the Tour Championship at the end of the season to much acclaim. Now he has broken his Majors drought which stretches back to the US Open in June 2008, where he literally won the tournament in an eighteen hole playoff on one leg.

You can’t help but admire the guts and grit he has showed in his comeback. He’s also a much more rounded man, with humility now where once there was hubris. It was cool to see the camera shot of his mother, children and girlfriend as he played #18. And having proved to himself more than anything that he can win again at the highest level, Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 Majors is once again under threat. And golf is much more interesting to watch because of it.

I don’t like the idea of a CGT but if there is to be one it has to be fair, and like GST, that means taxing all capital gains, whether they be on shares, investment property, residential property or the rise in value of one’s fine art collection. Otherwise you just get evasion and skewing of investment into the most tax effective, rather than the most productive, areas

  In all that time – every year – we have been told by economists, anti farming lobbyists and a range of know-all politicians, what should be done and not done in and around farming.
  And it was always the same:
  We must not be so reliant on export income from primary production.
  There must be more diversity and added value. Farming is a “sunset industry”.
  Tourism is the way forward.
  And latterly – farmers must pay more tax – land tax, water tax, fuel tax, emissions tax – just whatever randomly comes to mind.
  And so on. And on.
  And yet here we are all, these years later, still working hard earning export income from farming.

in the last 36 hours than we have in the last 36 years. We’d hadnt even heard of her!
How come she was never made a Dame or something? As my partner said, it sounds like she did a lot more for NZ in her lifetime and would have deserved it ahead of many of those other self-important poseurs out there.

Latest poll is out, Ardern is riding high on 51% support, an increase because she handled the Christchurch attack just like any other decent human would have…Bridges on 5% which im calling bullshit on, there’s no way only 5% of people in this country prefer Simon over Ardern, id guess at a minimum half of national supporters would be voting for him. Still I suppose the media want him rolled so they can get a few juicy stories, once the fallout begins.

  Female voters, they tend to be pack animals and so many vote on emotion and solidarity, negative comments about Ardern are just viewed as sexism by many, doesn’t matter if it’s justified or not.
  
  Said it before only another woman can beat Ardern in 2020, a guy can but it will take until 2023 or more likely 2026.
