State house waiting list up to 10,712, up 73.3% on December 2017, half being single adults no children. Apart from capital costs (yuge), there are other costs to the taxpayer, also yuge. Including taxpayer subsidised rent to the tune of nearly $300 per week each state house, additional staff in Housing New Zealand and also in other agencies to provide support for high needs tenants, as planned for the new Greys Ave development in Auckland. And plenty of other high needs state tenants generating complaints from neighbours.

Where is the analysis of costs flowing from this massive increase, and this analysis should be including reduced tax from landlords who are selling up bigly. Might conceivably be some correlation with the waiting list.

    But Kowtow it makes perfect sense if you understand what the true raison d’etre of these folk is….
    
    The truth is that the various factions of leftism are shot through with logical and moral inconsistencies. The only thing they’re consistent about is their anti-white agenda.
    
    I suppose you could say they’ve traded moral and logical consistency for a higher sort of consistency, namely that of being consistently anti-white (whatever Mikenmild would have you believe) That’s promotion of feminism, abortion, mass migration, and the globo-homo project in general can all be viewed as alibis for anti-White-ism.
    
    No longer do we need to scratch our heads over why the eco-warriors – who profess to wanting to save some rare species of butterfly, moth or mollusc – advocate for policies which undermine the one race which does more than any other to try and conserve these species – the white race. If you wanted to be logically and morally consistent, and possessed a genuine interest in saving the planet, the first thing you would be working night and day to do is to save the white race. And if you genuinely wanted to lower the world’s carbon footprint, the last thing you want to do is turn millions of Third World polluters into the First World polluters (I believe the carbon footprint of the average person in the First World is some 10-12 times that of the average person in the Third World) by housing them in the countries our Ancestors built.
    
    But moral and logical consistency are not the goals here. If logical and moral consistency gets in the way of their anti-White policies, then it’s “logic and moral consistency be damned.”
    
    When you peel back all the superficial layers of guff which they use as alibis for their agenda, all you have left is pure Cain-like, hatred and envy for the white man. A hatred of being reminded of their own inadequacy and a consequent determination to see whites dragged low and finally swept from the stage of existence.

        Leave the Left-Right politics aside for a moment, EAD, and consider how current migration policy is bound to lower New Zealand living standards.
        
        New Zealand is in its second biggest population growth spurt (ignoring that of the arrival of the first Maori canoes), and the growth is coming from immigration.
        
        High immigration is increasing demand for goods and services. We get the vicious circle: more labour is then needed, which boosts, demand, which needs we need still more labour, and thus still more migrants.
        
        This causes population growth to outpace economic growth, as was shown in the last reporting quarter, when GDP per capita was marginally under zero.
        
        The growing population lifts demand for imports without any commensurate increase in exports. This, when we are already failing to earn enough from exports to pay our way in the world. The current account balance of the last 40 years must worsen. Our flourishing tourist industry is unable to balance our “books” with the rest of the world.
        
        New population disproportionately goes into internal service industries such as real estate, lending, retailing, restaurants. Worse, many newcomers go into low-wage, high labour-content activities such as fruit picking. This is causing NZ’s poor performance in productivity, a key to economic growth.
        
        So the picture is: soaring population, near-stagnant productivity, an export-import gap, and the problem inevitably worsening unless population is stabilised.
        
        A small, insufficient safety valve, visa-free movement into Australia, is likely to close as NZ politically (and especially on immigration) veers from a parallel course with Australia.
        
        We are on a developed country’s path into the Third World.

        The current immigration system is weighted to high value immigrants, qualified, highly skilled individuals.
        
        Indeed the last 5 to 10 immigrants I’ve met have all be engineers, experienced project managers, teachers.

  The old state house duplex (2-bedrooms each) next door to me in Orakei (and sitting on some 1,100 square meters of land) must be worth millions.
  There’s an old pest on the far unit (who seems to have a stream of “boarders”) and a model tenant in the unit next to me (who couldn’t be a nicer, hard-working fellow).
  Talk about a mis-use of state resources. There should be a refugee family in each unit (raising havoc in the neighborhood), but there isn’t.
  I don’t have any complaints. Let sleeping dogs lie.

  Tell people they are “homeless” unless they own a house and the government will provide and up goes the hand and there is your increase in people on the waiting list.
  Where is the incentive for people to save and get their own house.
  We are becoming a country of no-hopers, no get up and do, cradle to grave expectation.
  Envy of those who have “made it” in life. Forget the sacrifices they may have made.
  The education system is abetting this in your people.
  They do not see that those in positions of power in the government are taking over total control of their lives. There is a laziness and acceptance and living for today which will come back and haunt them – but then too late. the time to get ahead and do the hard yards is when you are young and have the energy.
  They need to stop and really think, do I want the government to tell me what to do every minute and hour of my day because that is the end result, then their so called “free time” will be strictly controlled as to what they can and can’t do, far more than the basic laws we have now.
  10 minutes in the sun because you will get skin cancer.
  You must ride a bike.
  You must catch a bus.
  1 car for you but only if essential and they will be the judge of that.
  what books you read
  what TV you watch.
  Control of the internet content.
  I could go on, but I am painting a picture of a life I don’t want for me, my children or my grandchildren.
  Are there enough “like minded people” to instil in their children, grandchildren what it appears some of them can’t see.

      The lefties are all for letting the Tangata Whenua do things their old way; and they encourage the new immigrants to band together where they can do things their own way.

        When the replica ‘Endeavour’ ship was built, they had to provide alternative (20th Century) accommodation below because the traditional accommodation for most of the crew would have been too rough. Similarly auxiliary diesel engines were fitted – no one wants to be caught in the Doldrums for weeks.
        So Tangata Whenua would only do things the old way when it suits.

      The NZ Labour Party have forming in fucking over the economy of the SI West Coast for the last couple of decades by curtailing mining and forestry etc, so it stands to reason they don’t have any qualms doing the same with the Taranaki province.
      
      What will they replace it with? So far the COL has handed out millions for a church revamp and some walking tracks for Taranaki, I guess we plebs must be “grateful” for these token beads and blankets level of “compensation”???

      Unfortunately NZ demand is too small for LNG to be economic. Our gas prices will go up significantly because LNG shipping and pricing is configured around sending very big ships to high volume markets like Japan and China. If you are smaller you will pay more for import infrastructure and shipping. You’ll also likely need to duplicate import or storage facilities for security of supply reasons.

  A few problems:
  -More than half our liquid fuel use is for aviation.
  -Tractors and earthmovers can’t be economically electrified.
  -Ships and smaller boats can’t be economically electrified.
  -NZ Milk powder production alone requires average of about 0.5GW of heat power year-round to produce from milk. (about 10% of current grid)
  -Electrified cars and trucks would need up to 50% increase in grid required.
  -Annual storage of energy to get through winter is totally unaffordable. No technology can store that much energy cheaply (no, not pumped storage either). Wind and PV output are hugely smaller in high demand Winter months than Summer
  -Using hydrogen as an energy store for aviation/ships/tractors is woefully inefficient – only about 30% of electricity put in comes out other end. Hydrogen is also extremely dangerous.
  
  If they are serious about this (and not just mouthing the words knowing they will never be in power long enough to actually have to answer for them) then the only feasible solution is Nuclear. But that is a rat they will not be able to swallow.

    Not disagreeing with you, just out of curiosity – What are the limits on the current technologies? I imagine (perhaps wrongly) that there is size beyond which trucks, tractors, buses (?), say, are not feasible as electric vehicles – any engineering types know what they are?       On-road stuff can basically all be electrified. Particularly if use battery swapping (the logical solution to give unlimited range, fast ‘charge’ and lower capital cost). The distributed fixed charging/battery swap tech is economic when spread over all road users.
      
      Near future batteries tech is about 250kWh and $35000 per tonne, and delivers the same energy as 60L of diesel. Big earthmovers, tractors, harvesters etc can spend months unused then work 24/7 for a couple of weeks on a job without access to nearby charging infrastructure. Big farm machines now use up to 4-500kW and often several will be working on same farm at one time requiring many MW in charging capacity. The extra capital and lost productivity costs of shifting them to batteries would be astronomical – millions per farm. For earthmovers and forestry it is even worse.
      
      A big freight ship would need about 250tonnes or $10million of batteries per hour of cruise, and needs at least 2-300 hours of such power – Putting batteries prices at the $2-3Billion and battery weight at close to 100000tonnes. They would also need chargers capable of up to about 1GW of power. Not remotely economically realistic. Smaller fishing boats etc have similar issues.
      
      Only realistic economic zero carbon option for all these use cases is synthetic hydrocarbon fuels or hydrogen made using nuclear power (can use high temperature heat directly).

    Tell them it is more than likely the CGT will include an inheritance tax. My elderly parents were horrified when I told him of the likelihood. The elderly don’t want to have less of their hard earned money to hand down to their loved ones and those on the receiving end of inheritance won’t want to receive 1/3 less in their pocket. Their Kiwisaver accounts may also decrease if the CoL gets their sticky fingers in their “piggy bank”.

      We have decided that should the Death Duty Tax as part of the CGT come in we will sell our lovely home before that comes in and rent with the investment proceeds from the bank paying a top rent.

        Inflate the price to a level around where it would be in 10 years for example and that should take care of any capital gain.

Tauranga is in a state of Rental apoplexy.
The Council a few years ago gave a car park in the middle of the CBD a 30 year lease so that Waikato University can build a Campus.
This is now as good as completed and will have 2500 students shortly.
A few car parks for the special people running the place.
Some accommodation is going to be provided at cost to the few who can get it.
Two other places are going to be available for 45+ students when started a bus or two away.
Parking is not readily available anywhere -even if you could afford it.
Tauranga CBD is dead as shops stay empty – no parking available that has not been pre paid by organisations – Council most of it.
So once again what idiot determined in a City abounded by plenty of land builds a student facility for some 2500 students. Buses yes -same as Wellington Company – chaos at present.
I forgot new Council Offices to replace the old one pulled down – where in CBD on the old site.
Barmy and getting worse.

There was an expert on the radio news this morning saying that the govt’s ban on oil and gas exploration will cost the country $30 billion by 2050. Then of course they had a woman from the Greens on “yeh, but, climate change….” *sigh*

New figures show the Government’s decision to ban oil and gas exploration could cost the economy up to $30 billion by 2050.

An oil lobby groups says this means the policy needed to be reassessed, but the Government has questioned the validity of the figures.

The data comes from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) and paints a grim picture of the Government’s decision.

As well as costing the economy $28 billion over the next 30 years, NZIER said the policy’s overall contribution to the global reductions of emissions was undetectable.

Sorry its a bit long.

Dear Mr xxx
I am writing to thank you for your email dated 16 February 2019 regarding the state of news media, journalism and broadcasting here in New Zealand and your kind words to me personally. You have raised three questions for me to address:
1. Does National have any plans to maybe sell off TVNZ to a private Company
2. Would National direct TVNZ to be completely impartial
3. What is my reaction to the possible sale of Stuff to TVNZ
In regards to the first question, I can say that National has not yet formed an opinion as to whether we would look at a partial or full privatisation of WNZ. I do note that with changing market trends in the broadcasting community there may be scope for consideration as to the future of NNZ as a Crown entity, particularly concerning what the Government is intending to do in the Public Media space before the next election.
TVNZ is Crown-owned but operates independently, I do not believe the shareholding Ministers should intervene in what are operational matters such as content as that in of itself is a bias that we should not have in publicly owned media institutions.
In regards to your third question, you may be aware I questioned TVNZ’s CEO and Board Chair extensively at last week’s Economic Development, Science and Innovation Select Committee hearings on this topic. The answers that they gave in regards to their openness on acquiring Stuff NZ assets were interesting and I will be looking to seek further information on this important issue soon by way of Parliamentary Written Questions.
At present our media institutions are facing significant restrains in their future operating options in part due to a recent Commerce Commission decision effectively barring large media entities from merging into a new organisation. It is reasonable to believe these decisions need to be reviewed if private or public media institutions are able to survive in the New Zealand market looking to the future of kiwi broadcasting.

This from powerline about President Trump’s foreign policy. People in New Zealand mainly seem to think that President Trump is horrible and former President Obama was marvellous. Maybe it is a matter of style preference?

But the truth is in matters of substance Trump is miles ahead of Obama. Take the area of foreign policy. Former President Obama was wrong in every facet of foreign policy that he touched. President Trump on the other hand has done a great job of bringing his allies back on board e.g. Israel and dealing with his enemies e.g. Iran and North Korea.

“President Trump has rejected the status quo ante in American foreign policy. He has rededicated the United States to the support of Israel. He has withdrawn the United States from the disgraceful deal with Iran. He has tightened the sanctions regime with the intent of disabling the mullahs. He has shaken up matters with the North Korean regime in the interest of putting their nuclear weapons program on the path of termination. He has now come out for the removal of the socialist dictator of Venezuela. I could multiply the examples, but you can fill in the blanks. In each of these cases, Trump is right and Obama was wrong.

Yesterday President Trump went to Florida International University in Miami to give a speech on Venezuela before a friendly and raucous audience. I am unable to find either the text or the video on the White House site. I have posted a news video of the speech in its entirety below. It is a gloriously Reaganite speech; it is a great speech. In it Trump stands for freedom against the forces of socialism, tyranny and immiseration.”

    Nigel – Trump is trying to steer a middle course between total surrender and total war. The United States cannot accept North Korea being a nuclear power. So the president is attempting to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear missiles using very strong sanctions and the promise of partnership and goodwill with the United States.
    
    It is difficult to understand what Trump could have done differently? Remember when he came into office there was the threat of nuclear war from North Korea. Now there is at least diplomacy.
    
    Obviously the other course of action would be for the President of the United States to ring the President of South Korea and advise him to immediately evacuate Seoul. United States will start to bomb North Korea in 24 hours. I don’t think anyone wants that?

        In support of Plunket, Whittakers have produced a new Coconut Ice chocolate bar. The bars of chocolate play on this new fashion of the pregnancy reveal party. So, the chocolate bar you purchase is either coloured blue or pink. You do not know until you unwrap the bar of chocolate.

Funny interview on Moaning Report this morning with the Mayor of Thames/Coromandel District Council over her refusal to sign the LGA’s climate change protocol.

The good lady is refusing to sign for two reasons, these being:
1. The protocol has some specific spending commitments that are open ended, that she does not want to commit Thames/Coromandel ratepayers to an open ended blank cheque; and
2. The whole issue in her words “is politically charged”.

So, she refuses to sign.

The comedy was in the rest of the interview, with the interviewer trying to get the mayor to admit that she is a climate change denier. Which she refused to do.

After the interview, it was a knowledge by the interviewer that West Coast District has also refused to commit to climate change requirements from central government.

  It seems to be the trend for our mediocre reporters to find one question and keep asking it even when the interviewee repeatedly says they are not going to answer it.
  If it is a matter of national importance then keep on asking.

Here’s the kernel of it:

Although recent talk has centred around Huawei and alleged spying activity, which the Chinese company has always denied, sources close to GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have stressed time and again that any concerns the UK had about Huawei stemmed from technical deficiencies related to the equipment, not any evidence of espionage.

Beyond allegations from US politicians and spy chiefs, who want to see Huawei and China’s influence over 5G limited, there is a less-discussed issue, and it centres around 5G itself – that all equipment vendors may struggle to make networks secure, and they’re running out of time to do so.

AND

“The size and sophistication of distributed denial-of-service attacks have risen at an ever-accelerating pace,” a report by cybersecurity company A10 Networks read last year. “As new 5G networks become operational, we expect the size of attacks will dwarf these records.”

The political silly season is kicking off in the US with Bernie Sanders announcing his bid to seek the Democratic Party nomination.

It looks like it could be a good comedy show with Sanders on the extreme left at age 77, former VP Joe Biden at age 78 and up to 18 other people in the race.

People like Warren and others, so it should be fun watching who makes it through go the end of May next year.

All politics being herd politics, the population has coalesced into herds fanatically pro-Trump and fanatically anti-Trump. Yet Trump’s past is not a secret.   I would have to say that the article that you have posted is almost deranged in its wrongness. President Trump rather than continuing the previous administrations, going back to the Vietnam days, of endless unwinnable wars, has done exactly the opposite. He demanded that his generals win against Isis. The result was that they dramatically stepped up bombing and intensity and Isis has now lost all of its caliphate. Now having won, Trump is saying let us get out as soon as possible. Let’s not stay there for the next 20 years but let’s pull out as soon as possible.
  
  In Afghanistan after 18 years Trump is saying let’s get out of there. If we can’t win then let’s withdraw and bring the boys home.

        Please dont take this as a swipe at all women, but it was Bert Walker (MP for Papanui) when he was Min of Social Welfare 1975 – 78, who said:
        “We now live in an age where women can receive cradle to grave welfare”.
        
        He went on to explain:
        1. There was Child benefit from 0 to 18;
        2. Unemployment benefit when they left school and didn’t have work;
        3. They could get the DPB + other benefits when they popped a child every year to 18 months;
        4. When she couldn’t produce she could on back on the dole; and
        5. Once she reached 60 (as it was in the 1970s/80s) she could get super.
        
        Achieving the the feat of never having had to work in her life.

The problem with MMP in NZ is that our politicians are stupid and greedy.
They don’t have to form a coalition. They can stay in opposition and grow the size of their base while allowing the largest party to form a minority government.
But then they wouldn’t get the ministerial portfolio and a snout in the trough. They actually have to do hard work. Easier to stick the snout in the trough and hoover up as much tax payer money as you can before the public turf you out.
Every minor party that goes into coalition is weakened by their much larger counterparts instead of staying in opposition and growing their vote until they have a much larger base to negotiate from. I use to think the tail wagged the dog but have started to realise the dog just bribes the tail and then watches it fall off.

  The only economic way of making hydrogen is from natural gas or coal (via gasification and steam reforming) and given hydrogen is difficult to store and transport, it is an idiotic idea to use it for fuel except for a few special cases.

  I think the difference is scale: using renewables for small installations is definitely cost effective, it seems to me complications occur at city-scale.
  
  My experience is anecdotal so take it for what it’s worth. Several years ago we put in a Solar solution at the bach for $12K, comprising six panels (for a total of ~1900 kW,) eight Lead-Carbon batteries (total 14.4 kVA,) Inverter and sundries. We’re completely off-grid.
  
  We’re anticipating about 20 years from the system which works out at about $600 per annum in electricity costs. Not bad.
  
  We’re not using solar for water heating but we should be, because most mornings the batteries are fully recharged by about 10:30 and we’re dumping the rest of the daylight hours the panels harvest.
  
  We’re using gas for hot water currently but it makes sense to add a hot water cylinder to capture all that unharvested daytime solar energy instead. If the solar system can’t keep up who cares? Easy enough to add a couple more panels as they’re cheap as shit.
  
  One of the problems with solar is the headache of energy management, it’s not “plug and play” like grid-tie electricity. But I must say this is not a hassle: aside from only using the vacuum cleaner during the day consumption management is something we seldom if ever need to think about.
  
  In synopsis, solar has definitely reached the price/performance point in my opinion where it should be the first option when considering your home electricity supply.

        Not so chap. You see the largest proportion of the cost of a solar implementation is battery storage. With a grid-tied house you don’t need storage as you simply feed back to the grid.
        
        Cost would be about $3K, comprising panels (~$300 each) and Inverter (~$1k.)
        
        Electricity suppliers pay out a lot less to their customers for feeding to the grid than they charge them for taking from the grid however, to discourage consumers from doing this.
        
        Other countries have solved through legislating energy company buy/sell pricing. It’s not fair on the electricity suppliers for it to be 1:1 however, as solar-producing households are feeding the grid during low-consumption periods of the day.

  Minister Woods has no understanding of the electricity supply management. Electricity has to be supplied at 50Hz not 51Hz. That requires massive control by the minute of the whole national generation/supply and distribution system.
  
  Hydro power is almost available on demand but add solar panels feeding the grid they have to adjusted for too. Bird Killers only work when the wind obliges to specs and coal is unwelcome.

Can someone please explain to me how making my electricity bill more expensive (by outlawing the discount I receive) will make it easier for ‘low income households’ to afford and/or pay theirs.

  So a “monthly guaranteed discount of equal value” for everyone. Sounds too good to be true, right?
  
  Meridian is the first major energy retailer to announce the end of prompt payment discounts. Neal Barclay says the decision is about making Meridian’s pricing fairer. The move is expected to cost the retailer $5 million, which it says will not be recovered from elsewhere in customers’ bills.
  
  So everyone pays. Actually, to be more precise, if the company doesn’t recover the money from “elsewhere in customers’ bills”, then Meridian Energy shareholders will ultimately pay.

Anyway I am with Genesis, have been for more than 30 years, and always paid my bill on time (auto payment). This is going to effectively add about $35 to my monthly bill. What I suspect is another socialist scheme to force me to pay more for my power to subsidise some other household – no or minimal penalty for late payment, or access to an industry funded scheme where they can apply for relief.       I’ve just scanned the Electricity Price Review options paper (published today). The section of interest to you is B7: Prohibit prompt payment discounts but allow reasonable late payment fees (pages 10 and 11):
      
      Retailers (and where applicable any distributor) would be allowed to charge late payment fees (capped to reflect genuine debt recovery costs) but prompt payment discounts would be prohibited. Other conditional discounts (such as for paperless billing, direct debit or bundled offers) would be allowed but would be capped to reflect genuine savings to the retailer.

      We commend Meridian for replacing its prompt payment discount in October 2018 with a guaranteed discount for all customers even if they pay late. Meridian estimates its change will amount to an immediate saving of $5 million a year for its customers. It says that, in the first two months following the change, it “observed no discernible impact on or deterioration in … customers paying their bills late, levels of customer debt, or disconnections”. If other retailers followed, our analysis suggests a total saving of about $45 million a year for all consumers.
      
      Individual retailers that did so voluntarily, without waiting for regulations, would give their customers a greatly appreciated pre-winter boost.

New Zealand’s largest independent conservation organisation is throwing its weight behind the young people striking from school on 15 March to demand action on climate change.

“They will have to deal with much worse effects of climate change than we do, and we must listen to their voices,” says Forest & Bird chief executive Kevin Hague. … “We’re proud of young people standing up for what’s right.”

Will Jacinda show leadership and tell these schoolchildren that it’s important to go to school and get a proper education? And that, if so inclined, they can “strike” on the weekend by refusing to watch TV or play sport?

Reading KB gives a few clues as to what has gone wrong with NZ politics. The middle ground has been excluded and there is little representation of the average person among the leading parties.

On one hand we have an intolerant and divisive left forever trying to pit us against each other on the basis of gender, race, religion, sexuality and how much money you make.

On the right we have heartless uncaring people and overt racists like Jack5 who claim all our ills are due to brown people and those filth yellow heathens of the East.

But no where in that ideological cauldron do you find the voice of the ordinary person who is busy working hard and trying to do the right thing. They are too busy getting on with life to be minding other peoples business, or to be hating the on fashionable victims defined by the left.

The modern political landscape is dominated by those seeking to force minority interests on the majority. They appeal to the sentiments of that majority in a cynical attempt to gain votes, but they car nothing for the average person.

Simon Bridges political career has passed on after a year long battle with being a smug arsehole. His career died agonizingly shortly after the latest poll results were released. Christian conservatives are preserving his corpse while discussions continue with Colin Craig and clergy who have not been caught yet.

The Kentucky schoolboy depicted around the world as being racist towards an American Indian activist is suing the Washington Post for quarter of a billion dollars.

The amount sought by Nicholas Sandmann, aged 16, is the same amount the world’s richest man (or is pre-divorce settlement) Jeff Bezos paid for the newspaper.

Will he be able to go around the world, hitting newspapers? Or even just any that reprinted the original Washington Post report?

Adelaide pilot leaves ‘I’m bored’ message and graffiti on flight radar

An Adelaide pilot has taken workplace venting to new heights by etching “I’m bored” into the sky … The message was not seen by people on the ground, but was visible to aviation followers watching live flight tracking programs and websites.

Retired Qantas A380 pilot Chris Wilson said he thought the message was “harmless”. “It’s not very common for someone to do this. It’s the first one I’ve seen,” Mr Wilson said. “I think it’s a harmless pursuit. He obviously is bored. “I’d say he was a young pilot trying to build up some hours.”

I understand we have at least 1 or 2 retired (?) pilots on Kiwiblog.

According to overseas media reports two US Marines were grounded over a stunt where they created a “sky penis” over California in October 2017.

Such originality should’ve been rewarded – perhaps by a requirement that they fly the penis route until their fuel tank was running low!
