    Immigrants legal or illegal usually arrive by air sea or customs land borders, other types especially organized caravans or boatloads are invasions as they are attempts at forcible entry. If Waters and Pelosi are so convinced that walls are unnecessary for security, remove their local prisons walls and allow the inmates to wander around their locality with no worries they may be burgled or murdered.

    A big part of Trumps argument for the wall is drugs, the cartels and associated people trafficking.
    Obama declared a National Emergency related to the Cartels and their activities in 2011 and the national emergency still stands. So there was a problem/ emergency and there still is.

    I see a certain down ticker has a problem with logic.
    
    The sentence in question borders on a double-negative. That’s something you (the down ticker) might want to look up.
    
    It’s similar to Pink Floyd’s “Brick in the Wall” song with the line “We don’t want no education”. Which is to say “We want education”. I don’t know if they were being sly or ignorant when they wrote that. Certainly, a bunch of ignorant school children of the time loved to quote it in an act of so-called rebellion.

        Which is clearly not the case. Personally, I think that such personal expression of sympathy should be reserved for someone you have a connection with. Otherwise you risk making the situation worse. The Prime Minister does have a role in helping the nation deal with calamity. eg the Christchurch earthquake. However as a PM how can you get involved with each person’s personal tragedy? There are dozens every day, in many tragic forms. If a leader just picks a couple at random, the “sympathy” can make things worse. Ot you can be accused of politicising tragedy.
        
        In this case the PM seems to have been motivated by a perceived connection with the person at the centre of the tragedy. But it seems not to have been well received.

  It seems bizarre that Ardern’s spokesperson claims Ardern has a personal connection but ‘Jo’, the recipient of the note, appears baffled about that.

    The stuff item is headed: WARNING: THIS STORY CONTAINS SENSITIVE INFORMATION ABOUT SUICIDE
    
    One of the sensitivities about reporting suicide is an avoidance usually of describing method of death, and also anything that may glamourise it – like over reportage of size of a suicide’s farewell and number of mourners and tributes that might contribute to a sense of after-death public sensational attention.
    
    Surely, if true, that the Prime Minister is informed and your family may receive a message – not unlike the Queen sending a birthday communication to those attaining 100 years – would fall into such a category of sensationalism, to be sensitively played down.
    
    This adds importance to a statement from the Prime Minister or her office, as to why this private matter has reached stuff at all – unless it is through reactions of a family “baffled” by the handwritten note.

      Her comms staff should have made it clear to Stuff’s Journo that a private, personal communication is private and there would be no further comment on the matter from the PM’s Office.

    The only way to lower suicude would be to fix mental health services. That would take a decade with lots of money. For example, we really need publicly funded psychologists specialising in teens and young adults. They need to be trained. Money won’t fix this quickly. You need highly skilled people.
    
    At least in Wellington if you have a young adult who is depressed and suicidal the help is firstly drugs. Second a case worker who makes $20 per hour. She will organise art classes or group hugs. If he then attempts suicide it is into hospital and more drugs. Seriously that is it. Good luck with fixing it. It can’t be done with fairy dust.

    When I watched this piece on 1 News though, the funny bit was watching the Minister of Health – his backdrop had a gigantic photo of himself on the wall. It told me he spent the time and money to immortalise himself on the wall near his office. All other officials had the organisation they work for in the background.

  Seriously, a woman living down the road in these ugly flats (which are dragging down the neighbourhood) is as thick as pigsh*t but knows every single benefit to get and how to get it. She is married, but separated, gets a living alone benefit. Her husband who doesn’t work, gets the same, though he lives in a state house with his adult children, none of which work, she goes to a “housie” event virtually everyday, gets free medical visits. She spends her weekends with her husband. She just got matching tattoos behind each ear. She’s not due to retire for another 6 years but hasn’t worked in over a decade.

Now we have a gay couple who use a gay guy as a donor then another guy from the USA as a donor and we have two daughters caught up in a dispute over parenting.
The gay guy wants access as the legal father and the gay couple have restricted his access and want to move to NZ.
What an absolutely disgusting situation and can someone tell me if a kid is conceived by syringe is that love?
As I said after Coffey announced he was having a kid ,these arrangements will cause major problems for society in the future and a lot of crazy mixed up kids.

When artificially conceived kids grow up and learn the truth they will no doubt be seriously affected by it and will litigate.   Ardern’s mispronunciation of the letter ‘t’ as a ‘d’ is not a “speech impediment” in the normal sense of such an affliction. It is nothing more or less than lazy, sloppy pronunciation that has become an ingrained personal habit which is now common to many New Zealanders, especially younger females. It sets a very poor example for young people in general.
  
  If Ardern wishes to avoid being mocked for her ‘posidiv’ speaking style, she herself has the freedom and ability to do some personal improvement work:
  
  1. Hire a professional speech trainer and take private elocution lessons (out of the public eye; and surely she can afford the expense); and
  
  2. Devote 10 minutes each morning and evening in front of a mirror to reciting passages of prose (or series of particular words) assigned by her trainer.
  
  If Ardern has a firm commitment to ridding herself of her sloppy speech distraction, her spoken English could become quite normal, naturally, within two or three months. If, however, she lacks the required personal determination to rid herself of her poor pronunciation, I would have other concerns about her personal commitment to anything of importance. Maybe someone in the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association https://speechtherapy.org.nz/ could be trusted to help her under an agreement of confidentiality.

Chinese foreign ministry addresses NZ-China relationship

The Chinese foreign ministry has told reporters China is ready to work with New Zealand on new progress for bilateral relations.

The first two died due to malnutrition. She believes in the ISIS caliphate and would have liked to see it succeed, said life was hard and she saw severed heads of Westerners in a bin and was not upset by that. She said she did the right thing going to Syria but wants to return to the UK to bring up her child and does not believe she should be held to account for her ongoing support of ISIS.

Stuff kicks along the grievance cause as usual with an article by a Maori aged about 17 moaning about not being taught more Maori history in school.

Why has everything to be packaged for them? There are plenty of books to read, and plenty of libraries where they are freely available. Many, such as in Christchurch, go out of their way to make Maori feel at home.

If the State were to buy Stuff and merge it with State TV and State radio this article is the sort of garbage we would be deluged with.

What would such an NZ version of the old State propaganda arm Pravda be called?

You bet: Aotearoa Kawepurongo Tokapu. The print arm would be Niupepa Tokapu; the TV arm, Terewihana Tokapu; and Red Radio would be Reo Irirangi Tokapu.

Who is going to teach it?
A trained historian or a young twenty year old snowflake?
In my view the idea of teaching history at school is to get a better understand of things, and then if you wish later in life you can study history that suits you.

  I’ve just found a couple of videos on a guy called Vlad the Impaler.
  He led his people in Wallachia (part of modern day Rumania) against invasion from the Ottoman Empire.
  He did some amazing things (hence his name)
  he nearly succeeded in clearing the Ottomans (turks) out of Europe, but he was let down by the Hungarians of all people.

      Don’t take me on regarding history, I have quite a good general knowledge of it, and some very specific knowledge in certain periods. Plus a big library
      At the time of Vlad’s rule Europe was under a determined attack by the Ottomans, which did not stop until their huge armies reached Vienna and were pushed back with help from the Poles. That was in 1683.
      Two hundred years later, the Ottoman Empire was known as the sick man of Europe and was in gradual retreat in the face of the Balkan people rising up and Russian expansion.
      The Russians were trying to get an outlet for their Black Sea Fleet via Constantinople which is why the British and French stepped in to help the Turks.
      Incidentally the Battle of Balaklava was just after the start of the Anglo French landings and the war ended 2 years later!
      So its all down to politics and diplomacy.
      There are many cases of countries fighting each other then a generation later fighting on the same side and vice versa.

Our recent report Five Rules for a Fair Capital Gains Tax argues that the tax should only be supported if it is levied at a competitive rate, includes roll-over relief on death, is indexed for inflation, is revenue neutral, and eschews the ‘valuation day’ approach.

Only if those criteria are satisfied could a capital gains tax be considered fair. We say the ‘CGT-at-all-costs’ mentality from Mr Shaw is, frankly, extreme.”

  It sounds like you have accepted that a CGT will be implemented.
  I say that it is not only unfair, but that it will not gather much tax for many years, and that the cost of adminstering it will be far too large at a time when the IRD is downsizing.
  Not only that an army of laywers and accountants will make a fortune from it, and there will be less rental homes and at higher prices.

    We live in a society where education and healthcare are heavily subsidised and government assistance is provided to by way of social welfare to the unemployed, the infirm, the elderly and others.
    These three items account for nearly sixty percent of the budget.
    If you have a reasonable well paid job, are healthy and don’t have kids at school you could say sixty percent of your taxes are going to support people who are not all of those things.
    Sure there’s the indolent who avoid work and get money from WINZ, but there’s also a lot of people who would love to pay a lot more tax as a side effect of being paid a whole lot more.

    NZ presently has an excellent tax system by world standards. The government and people bargain the level of effective impost and the size of the social welfare blanket. That bargaining takes place each election.
    Tax is collected from all–even children at the lolly shop. GST spreads the burden. Income tax for most is via PAYE and that is levied on super payments too. Adjustments for dependents are built into the tax system via WFF. Social housing inequities among the lower paid are addressed through the Accommodation Allowance.
    Our system is economical to administer with collection largely based on cashflow. It will always be a work in progress and subject to grumbles.

      Drinking everyday is a common thing. Especially among suburban housewives. It has a way bigger effect on them than they realise. Fortunately I go off alcohol for days after knocking back a few and also have a limit that just comes in randomly and makes it suddenly taste awful. However it is a pretty high limit! 🙂

        Exactly. The evidence suggests spreading it out is way better than binge drinking. Yes I enjoy shutting the brain down and getting pissed. I don’t enjoy being a bit pissed, I want to be fully buzzed. So its either make a night of it or don’t bother.

        I’ve been battling the bottle or doing the flamingo, I prefer to think, full on for the past three years. It’s when you want to drink but can’t stop, mostly because you think you’re able to stop on your own that it gets scary.
        Full credit to anyone who can drink and get up the next day and it not dick with your conscience.
        Btw I sloped into AA at the age of 26 and stayed sober for nine years and had my kids clean. Then I thought AA was tits (I got bullied) and went it on my own. Had a good lot of years and lots of fun but when it got bad it got bad quickly. First detox was at the end of 2016 b4 the Presidential elections. (That was fun) I had a strew of medical emergencies last year and finally went to rehab for the 28.
        I slipped within twenty four hours. Undiagnosed mental health issues. Back into rehab for another eighty.
        This time I gelled with Refuge Recovery, (Buddhist based) got therapy and proper meds. Right now I feel fucking awesome.
        Long may it last. I just got out last Monday.
        If you wanna skip the drama try Refuge if AA isn’t your cup of tea (though AA is awesome too) and you can try the harm minimization route. Google HAMS (Harm Abstinence and Minimisation Support) I think.
        Had some great times while boozing. But it stopped being fun. Started being misery for all involved. Thank fuck I could get out when I did. It wasn’t easy.

From Nasska’s Religion Today column: Canberra pastor’s ‘prayers of deliverance’ involved rape and threats, police say

A senior pastor in Canberra allegedly used his religious position to do “prayers of deliverance” on church members that involved sexual acts, police say.

The man’s lawyer appeared on his behalf in the ACT Magistrate’s Court this morning. The man is facing four charges for acts of indecency, including one count of sexual intercourse without consent. His lawyer indicated he will plead not guilty.

ACT Policing allege the man, 53, would tell female members of the congregation they would be cursed and their family members would die if they did not engage [in] the sexual behaviour.

This “senior pastor” appears to think he had a direct line to God. Something like: “If you don’t have sex with me, then I’ll ask God to curse you and ruin your life”.

        Many years ago when I was very young I got a holiday job ‘aiding’ at a private RC hospital in an NZ city. It also provided hospice care for elderly nuns in a special wing. Every time I went into a certain wee lady’s room she would cry out “No, father, no.” and would not be consoled. I just thought she was senile – no-one else seemed to be concerned.
        It wasn’t until many years later that I realised what might be the cause of her distress.

    The more relevant question (I have some experience dealing with “intrinsically safe ” equipment.)
    What was a standard (Non intrinsically safe) cabinet doing anywhere near the mine?
    In a Zone 1 Hazardous environment, where explosive gases are usually present and/or a Zone 11 Hazardous environment, where explosive dust is usually present appropriately certified equipment for use in that environment MUST be used.
    Question:
    Who designed, built and certified this mine as safe to operate?
    Who signed off the plans?
    When were they signed off?
    How many safety inspectors saw the cabinet…and said NOTHING?
    Who was the local health and safety officer and why didn’t he say anything?
    All of these questions, should have been asked and answered BEFORE it’s opening in 2008.
    On 12 March 2004, Minister of Conservation Chris Carter approved the access arrangement for Pike River Coal Ltd.
    In October 2008, coal production started and in November 2008, Gerry Brownlee, the Minister of Energy and Resources and Minister for Economic Development, formally opened the mine.
