  While none of us want a tax introduced, the interesting thing is that I guarantee that if they introduce these pie in the sky schemes, the economy would collapse and for a generation any talk of increasing taxes will be met with, “Oh but that collapsed the economy last time.     It’s the total tax take that counts. The continuing reviews of the taxation system should be welcomed.
    
    The tax system make-up can steer economic directions. Reasons why NZ should be considering how we raise our taxes include these indicators of, or contributors to, our flat economy:
    
    – GDP per capita only 48th in the world (Australia 28th) and now flat, and possible about to begin falling.
    
    – Decades of balance-of-payments deficits;
    
    – Dismal performance in productivity;
    
    – Continued narrow economic dependence on natural resources – agriculture, tourism, horticulture, forestry, fishing.
    
    – Failure to broaden from commodity industry – forest output exported as raw logs, dairy industry stuck largely as a commodity supplier, regression in a typical farm industry, wool, as its basic processing like scouring shrinks or dies and manufacturing of wool products shrinks.
    
    – Increasing reliance on cheap labour, with low-wage, low-skill workers, temporary and permanent, imported.
    
    – Failure to grow a New Zealand-owned finance sector. Our banking industry is largely Australian owned, or even owned by foreign co-ops like Rabobank, and our national sharemarket is tiny and nearly stagnant.
    
    Fix the bloody economy, including the tax system.

      We don’t need more welfare so we don’t need more taxes.
      
      We don’t need more public servants (tax collectors) so we don’t need more taxes.
      
      We don’t need to send money to the UN, Pacific Islands, Climate Change lobbyists, Clinton Foundation so we don’t need more taxes.
      
      We need better education and outcomes, get rid of the union.
      
      We need less interference in our daily lives and businesses which would not be necessary if our population is educated.
      
      We would need less welfare if our population was better educated.
      
      We would need less imported skilled and unskilled workers if our population was better educated.
      
      FFS, how hard is it for a government, any government to see that.

        If I couldn’t go through a list of Govt. departments and quangos and trim half of them out of existence then I would be very surprised.
        If I couldn’t cut out billions in subsidies for a bunch of others I would be surprised.
        
        And that’s the problem.
        Both mobs of pollies add all these but when did you see any closed?
        When did you see any subsidies cut?
        Last time was Roger Douglas and its time we did it again.
        When did you see either mob and its sycophants make an effort to remove the restrictions on people.
        
        The State directly consumes and spends about 40% of our GDP plus their other partners consume a shit load more although it is not accounted for under their budget.

    They’ll frame it up to suit themselves. The term “tax neutral” is a ridiculous term as it simply means altering the method of tax exploitation of citizens rather than it being truly “neutral.” Neutrality in this context would be consumption taxes only as the taxpayer can control how much he/she spends and hence his/her tax liabilities.

If you can not fight cheaper fast foods by lowering GST on fruit and vegetables, because it is too complicated and difficult, how can you raise GST on red meat to supposedly ease obesity and oblige the religion of global warming?

And, similarly, if you lower the MMP Party Vote thresh-hold to match New Zealand First and the Greens’ dropping popularity, will it also enable a possible new “Teal” Green/National party through the blocks?

      I am a small business and I don’t agree.
      
      We only pay the gst to the government on what we collect less the gst for the expenses we incur.
      
      A decent accountant can “defer” gst payments on many manufactured or created and unsold items but ultimately the tax balances out over time.
      
      We are net payers of gst as we collect vastly more than we can offset and some months it used to be a pita paying out on receipts before we were able to debit out the costs but creative accounting has solved that plus our cash flow easily supports those months.

        Yes you can claim back GST as a a business – unless of course you are an evil, residential landlord, where you cannot claim GST back as it is not charged on rentals. It makes a significant difference to the expenses section of the P&L. Another reason not to be a residential landlord

    I certainly think we need something to stop the proliferation of $2 shops selling trucklads of useless shit.
    
    I wanted to import a still but lo and behold, there is a tariff. The price plus freight plus inspection plus tariff brought the item price to about $50 less than the same product sold locally.
    
    Now I did try to buy the product from a manufacturer in Oz but again, tarifs and they refuse to “sell” as a local importer has the license. The margin is outrageous.
    
    So, off to Amazon or Aliexpress while they still agree to sell to us in NZ.
    
    I have ignored the gst component as that is charged regardless of where I buy the still.

  Was having lunch on Friday, roast duck with rice and greens..yummy as well.
  
  A large indigenous person came into the restaurant (Chinese restaurant so probably a front for the communist party) and asked for a quarter of a duck to take away. Then her two children turned up so she asked the price for a half duck, $35 so not cheap considering a whole duck is around $24 at my local supermarket, so she ordered the half duck.
  
  While waiting for the duck one of her children saw the ducks hanging up in the glass case and asked why they couldn’t do that to their ducks at home…
  
  The answer…”Eww yuck”.
  
  So, $35 for a half duck…no poverdee then

  Next day we went fishing and caught 2 days worth of meals for the four of us so I guess I must be really poor.

“All this time we’ve been pouring money into planting trees and stealing land from farmers because we were sure that trees would cool the world. (Just like solar panels do, yeah?) But life is so complicated — for years now some researchers have been quietly wondering if more trees were actually going to warm the planet instead, but they didn’t want to say much. It turns out that while trees absorb the sacred CO2 (that’s cooling!) they also emit methane (that’s warming!), and terpenes (cooling) and isoprene (warming and cooling!) If that’s not complicated enough, then there is the albedo effect. Trees are dark, they absorb more sunlight than bare ground and snow. So depending on where they are planted, that makes for “warming”. Then some VOCs or volatile organic compounds also seed clouds.

So what’s the net effect? Who knows, it’s not like there are whole industries dependent on it…”

  A group of us formally asked the Royal Society of New Zealand for scientifically convincing evidence that man-made greenhouse gases cause dangerous global warming.
  
  They were unable to do so. After we put some pressure on, they asked Prof James Renwick and he too was unable to provide the evidence. Both referred us to the IPCC reports – without identifying any section that could be claimed to provide the evidence. Close study of the reports shows that there are major uncertainties in many of the key factors associated with predictions of global warming.
  
  It would appear that the evidence does not exist and dangerous man-made global warming is the biggest hoax in the history of the world.

  Because of need for earthquake resistance and because of the leaky homes episode, building regulation in NZ is now very stringent, perhaps over stringent. So it is not so likely to be a significant problem in NZ. Some NZ apartment purchasers have previously had similar issues with leaky apartments and unfortunately have lost some money to the extent that claims against councils have not succeeded.

    After 20 years in construction and design, there are still plenty of rubbish apartments being built, many with overseas money (and labour) and many have fire issues. The reasons are the same as the leakers – poor construction and oversight and a complete inability to give a damn.
    The building defects lawyers won’t be getting poor any time soon.

After writing to the Solicitor General for this appalling sentence to be appealed I was very angry to see this article justifying the sentence. Judges take an oath to administer the law without fear, favour or prejudice. I find it hard to believe if the offender was not from a professional background the sentence would be the same.

It seems the judge identified with the offender as a fellow professional and decided he did not want him to send him to jail and went about rationalizing his decision and made the discounts under two years so he could qualify for home detention.

During sentencing on Friday, Judge Harrop said Hannis, previously a highly-regarded member of the media industry and a respected academic, had suffered a “very substantial fall from grace”.

The word suffered makes me want to puke. He makes this evil man sound like he is some kind of victim.

Why the judge gave journalism lecturer Grant Hannis home detention for sexually abusing elderly woman

Sensible Sentencing Trust’s Jess McVicar said discounts were being handed out like rewards.

“The discounts we have seen in sentencing over the last year are appalling, we have a trial where the judge says the offending is unbelievable and then gives discounts,” she said.

        The issue is whether the Medical Council would register her if she completes a medical degree. Obviously there is no sense in a medical school accepting a student if the student is unable to obtain registration on graduation. Medical schools probably check marginal cases with the Medical Council. Also students in their final three years (especially sixth year) have contact with patients so must be potentially suitable for registration.

  When thinking about it, I consider the sentencing is appropriate in this case except that a five figure fine or compensation should be imposed too. The issues as I see it are:
  1. Is he likely to re-offend? In this case extremely unlikely.
  2. Is the sentence likely to deter others offending in similar circumstances? The total outcome – home detention, associated publicity, named on the sexual offenders register and loss of his job seems sufficient deterrence. It is doubtful that a prison term would effectively deter one more person from committing a similar crime in the future, compared with the penalty package he received.
  3. Is denunciation adequate? The sentencing package provides sufficient denunciation to meet Sentencing Act needs. It is probably inadequate to meet the feelings of the populous, especially if feelings have been inflamed by publicity, influencers, etc. However this is inadequate reason on its own to warrant a prison sentence.
  In summary, are there positive reasons rather than negative reasons to send him to prison?

    Peter, I believe that the law must be administered, without fear, favour or prejudice. That means the same sentence should apply regardless of race, sex or social standing. It is clear this does not apply in regards sex. To many including me, this does not apply to social standing.
    
    There are far too many cases where the well connected or their offspring in many cases more leniently. This is a shocking example.
    
    We do not even know if the judge and this low life belonged to the same golf club.

        If a judge complies with the law, there is no breach of the Judicial Oath. It would be most inappropriate if a Judicial Oath took precedence over legislation, common law or the Bill of Rights 1688 (which is part of NZ law). Anyway the proper channel for sentencing concerns is by lodging an appeal, not by a complaint to the Judicial Conduct Commissioner.

      ‘belonged to the same golf club’.
      There was a claim in Taranaki years ago that some farmers who defrauded the dairy company and the magistrate belonged to the same religious sect. This was because the farmers were fined $1000 each (worth $10000+ today) rather than being sent to jail (home detention and other community sentences were not available then). The company refused to take their milk meaning they had to dump their milk for a few days until an urgent auction of the herds could be arranged. Coming to think of it now, I doubt the farmers ever reoffended and the total outcomes were sufficiently dire for the offenders that there would have been very few dairy frauds since.
      So the sentence was appropriate and the rumour about belonging to the same religious sect did not gain any real traction.

  He probably needs to call it something different than ‘performance pay’. I have some experience in this area and I have seen pay-on-results where teacher salaries are based on exam results and student feedback. Basically you get teaching to the test and potential bullying from the students/parents. Teacher’s don’t know how much they are earning from year to year which makes it hard to get mortgages. It’s a disaster. But the suggestions in that link are more reasonable. Having said that, I meet lots of teachers leaving the profession due to stress – pay is not an issue for them. And, we have loads of skilled teachers in NZ who can’t get jobs because they can’t get over the qualification/registration hurdles without completely retraining at their own expense, so they leave the profession entirely – resolving this is a potential solution to the current recruitment problems.

    No need to pay them directly based on results. Just do what happens in just about every other profession and workplace, including hospitals which are also state funded but manage to pay doctors differently based on skill level.
    
    Reward the school based on its performance (value added not just raw exam results) and let the school decide who to employ, what to pay them, what class sizes to have etc, in order to maximise performance.
    
    Enable and reward innovation instead of stifling it.

      Principals can decide the pay levels of teachers – the teacher only gets a pay increase if the principal decides that they have passed their annual review which includes student achievement. It’s not automatic. Low decile schools can choose to spend the extra money they get on more teachers to reduce class sizes or other resources that meet the needs of the students. They can also pay management units to teachers with extra responsibility to give them a pathway to a leadership role. Of course, all of this may disappear if the recommended hub system is imposed. I’m all for charter schools, but don’t assume there is no flexibility for principals in the current system. In my opinion the real power lies with the MOE who force their ideology on principals, rather than the unions. Where does the MOE checklist come from? The UN.

  Performance pay for teachers is synominous to ‘bulk funding’. This was successfully resisted by the teachers unions. Nikki is well aware of this and hence will not promise to pick fights which her party would not win when in Government.

… documents obtained by Newshub show that, even if KiwiBuild targets are achieved in the next few years, it won’t even scratch the surface of the shortage. In fact, the shortage of homes is actually expected to grow.

The documents show that just to accommodate population increase over the next two years, we need to build 40,000 houses a year – but it’s likely only 30,000 will be built per year.

That means even if the Government hits its target of 6,000 KiwiBuild homes over the next two years, the housing shortfall which is currently 71,000 won’t fall at all – in fact it’s expected to increase to 85,000.

Presumable Princess Di Ardern is lying low on holiday pasting up her CV pictures scrapbook for her new job.
She is not doing the one she is paid to do.
I expect to see this year that personal pressure will erupt this year, as I hear that her staff are in trepidation of what might happen with the new appointments.
Her staff beside manner has deteriorated dramatically in the last few months.

    I heard Barclay interviewed by Hosking on ZB just after 7am this morning. He sounded like a pretty reasonable bloke who has been hard done by.
    
    When Kiwibuild was brought back under MBIE, specifically under MHUD boss Andrew Crisp, all of a sudden there was an investigation launched by Crisp, based on a series of complaints from associates of Crisp. Barclay said he provided a complete written rebuttal to the allegations, but that Crisp appeared to have already made up his mind.
    
    On the basis of Barclay’s comments, I would say the taxpayer is going to have to fork out plenty of dollars to make him go quietly into the night. Think of how many houses Phil would have been able to build or buy with what’s going to be spent on legal fees and compensation for a constructive dismissal.

      Crisp sounds like a typical lifer bureaucratic stiff where all i’s must be dotted and all t’s have to crossed as well as endless pointless meetings and choke the life out of you procedures.

        I can see how this sort of things happen. One day I got a memo from my boss scheduling a dozen or so complaints against one of my staff. The list had been assembled during some smoko discussion by a manager who should have been known better. Some of the complaints were spurious and after discussing it with the guy’s supervisor (the guy was on leave) I wrote a memo back rebutting the complaints one by one. I also complained about the manager. It was no problem for me or the guy complained about, but in other circumstances there could have been very serious consequences.

What a sad day for NZs voters. The perception that ‘Comical’ Chic Comrade Ardern was more interested in big noting at the UN and Europe.
Yes the small town twerp was intoxiacated by rubbing shoulders with Billionaires and Millionaires in Europe. Conveniently hiding the fact she was not the pick of the NZ voters as PM.
To reiterate her disdain for the people of NZ. She failed to appear on Mike Hosking morning programme. In fact sending a person fourth removed in her Government called Robertson to do her dirty work ,like not denying a proposed Capital Gain Tax of 33% on her serbs or peasants in the not too distant future. Virtually confirming that she is still in love with the socialist type of Government which she appears to agree with at present being enacted in Venezuela. Explains why NZ stance has not been against the Dictator Maduro,is completely out of line with many other Western nations.She seems to be more in line with the Commie nations China Cuba , Russia North Korea. What a bloody indictment. NZs should be afraid very afraid.

I noticed in this post from the other day about ideas for electoral reform, DPF endorsed Nick Smith’s proposal to entrench the waka-jumping law, so that it couldn’t be repealed except by a 75% vote. But nobody in the comments really mentioned this aspect. So I thought I would discuss it here.

Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to entrench the waka-jumping law? It seems to me that, if that happened, the only way to repeal it would be if National and Labour both agreed. It was a little strange to see DPF supporting entrenchment for it, because he has been such a vocal opponent of it in the past, and I would have assumed that he would support a straight repeal (by a new National government, presumably — whether Labour agreed or not).

  If a law is to be entrenched, it has to be passed by the majority that would be required to amend or repeal it. A 75% majority effectively required consensus between the two major political parties. Currently there seems to be little political mood to entrench anything.
  Interesting in UK the left would like to try and entrench the BBC against potential Tory interference and there was a suggestion in NZ from educationalists that the education system should be entrenched against the whims of future governments.

  I for one remember the frustration in the past when an MP decided the grass was greener across the border. I would support legislation that required an electorate MP to face a by election as they are there at the behest of their electorate.
  
  As far as I am concerned if a list MP decides to jump ship then fuckem, out they go.
  
  Now, if an MP raises concerns on a matter, any matter within their caucas and earns the ire of their leader, I do not see that as waka jumping as long as the stand they are taking is within the parameters of their election manifesto.
  
  For example, wynston the thief made the removal of the maori seats a “bottom line” tenent of their election manifesto. His instant dismissal of that should have repercussions so I believe that some form of electoral recall should be inplace, for any party that reneges on something that gained them em=nough votes to end up n control of ur country.
  
  If his mps had any integrity they would have stood their ground and tossed the little fucker out.

  I read his article this morning on the Herald and my immediate thought was “ouch, he must have a really bad hangover!”
  Normally his format is to either criticise National and compare it to something better Labour has done, or criticise Labour and then contrast that with something National has done to show why it is not going to be as damaging to Labour as it could have been.
  This was different, it was a pretty incisive and pretty acerbic takedown of the coalition and bleak view of the coming year for them. I especially enjoyed the clown head reference (though he missed the obvious opportunity to apply it to the PM).
  Likening Winston to a cockroach was pure gold too.

    There is a footpath/ cycleway (completely separated from the road) through the tunnel. Tooting, especially in the confines of the tunnel, is annoying to pedestrians and cyclists. It is illegal anyway unless done as a valid traffic warning.
    It is worth noting that the Council ceded control of the tunnel to NZTA several years ago when the tunnel and associated roads were designated SH1. This means NZTA is responsible for maintenance, signage etc. Indeed the NZTA spent a considerable sum upgrading the tunnel with a firefighting deluge system, increased earthquake resilience and new LED lighting.

I checked my 10 day weather forecast this morning and the highest temperature that I can locate nationally is 34 degrees on Thursday in Alexandra. Hot, yes but not out of the way for Alexandra. “[Wagstaff] says there is pressure for wages to rise. Under classic economic theory, with unemployment so low, wages should have gone up more but a broken collective bargaining system had stopped that happening.

So, non-classic economic theory has it that higher wages don’t affect prices but profits suck money out of the economy and push up prices……..

  Almost all of our murderers get life and eligibility for parole starts at 10 years. Those guys will likely be out in half their 11.5 yrs. That said, British judges are a lot tougher on sentence than here.

    You will find it is one of the safer o/seas destinations.
    
    Look at our ratio.
    
    I have been visiting Thailand with my wife (1 & 2 🙂 ) since 1979.
    
    I would still rate it as one of the easier safer destinations that I visit regularly.
    
    Now, Phuket, Pattaya and environs are slightly different but I still maintain visitors create vastly more issues than the locals and that does include the Russion and local mafia as well.

  Having two parents with jobs who care about their kids and teach them good values, is not a disadvantaged background. Household income has very little effect on success of kids in NZ. That’s just a line pushed by the left to justify more taxes.
  
  The correlation between parents’ income and success only exists because parents who are bad at earning money tend to be bad at raising kids as well. But that correlation doesn’t exist at all when the parents are immigrants from a poor country.

  Hannis’ sentence was manifestly inadequate but I’m heartened by the knowledge that he will be on an offenders’ register, unlikely to be accepted even for temporary entry to other countries, probably on airlines ‘watch’ lists, unemployable and a social outcast in his own country. Top Saudi cleric and Ambassador to America, Bandar Bin Sultan, says Obama’s lies set back relations with the Middle East by 20 years.

Bandar Bin Sultan served for years as head of Saudi intelligence as well as the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States. In the interview, he recalled last phone call between late Saudi King Abdullah and Obama, during which the Saudi leader told the US president: “I did not expect that (after) this long life, I would see (the day) when an American president lies to me.”

Obama, Bin Sultan said, “would promise something and do the opposite.” He said that the president took the Middle East back 20 years and also spoke critically of the Iran nuclear deal and how the former president spoke publicly about curbing Iran’s activities but then went behind Saudi Arabia’s back and negotiated the nuclear deal.

These policies by Obama, he said, emboldened Russia and Iran and paved the way for them to enter Syria and interfere in the civil war that has raged there since 2011.

Trevor Mallard has gone power-crazy:

Speaker Trevor Mallard will deny Jami-Lee Ross access into going into the offices of National MPs.

His movements around Parliament will be restricted, it has been announced today.

ZB political editor Barry Soper told Larry Williams that this is “unprecedented”.

Soper says that he is taking it to a level “never seen in Parliament”.

“Ross still is, whether Trevor Mallard likes it or not, an elected Member of Parliament, and he should have the rights of any other elected MP.”

Mallard is the “Parliament landlord”, Soper says, and he can do what he likes with the building.

He describes this as “draconian”.

Mallard has also announced he will be introducing new rules around journalist interviews.

“Journalists have also been warned that if a MP doesn’t want to be interviewed here within the precinct here at Parliament, that interview must cease forthwith,” Soper says.

Soper says that is also “heavy-handed nonsense”.

I don’t care so much about Ross, but the ability he’s giving MP’s to terminate interviews because they don’t want to answer questions is hardly what you’d expect from “the most open and transparent government ever”. He’s basically saying Ministers and the PM don’t have to answer journalists’ questions on their way to the House, which is a further erosion in the ability for them to be held to account.

On the bright side though, at least Iain Lees-Galloway won’t have to hide behind any more to avoid being quizzed 😀
