    Serious question: won’t the wall just make tunneling more common than it already is? Or ladders?
    
    The drug smugglers are already pretty sophisticated, and the money required for tunneling obviously pays for itself.

    Not to mention the numerous other ways of getting over, under, or through walls.
    
    Consider the cost of a plasma cutter compared to typical drug cartel revenue. Peanuts.
    
    I listened to an interview with Admiral Thad Allen on the radio this morning – he mentioned that the Coast Guard sees more tons of drugs than any other agency.

        The fallacy with that is that it is unknown how many gain access elsewhere. Ditto with drugs. Proximity to or presence at a border point makes capture/seizure more likely. Customs here will readily admit they have no idea how much of the influx of drugs is actually seized. That works both ways. Nobody really knows how effective the wall would be.

      The border wall is probably the least effective security measure imaginable for the cost. It’s a King Charles’s head – an obsession and talisman for the weak minded fearful, and those who wish to exploit those fears.
      The biggest drug problem in the US is the important of opiods – the vast majority of which arrive in legal shipments. Most illegal immigrants arrive legally and overstay their visas. Actual people and drug smuggling across the US-Mexico land border is address by a mix of inteligence work, patrolling and some physical barriers. Barriers already exist in the places where they are most needed and the terrain is suitable.

        It seems amazing that we have so many border security experts available on line. Perhaps the US should be tapping this resource, although given that they are simultaneously so ignorant maybe that’s a bad idea.
        
        A physical barrier (aka “A Wall”) is an important part of border security, but not the only part. The plan as presented by the Administration includes additional surveillance, additional people, and other equipment as well as a “Wall”. However in high risk/high traffic areas it is a critical part. Drones and surveillance typically will only warn you that an intrusion has happened, and it would require actual people to attempt to stop a border crossing. And what if another caravan approaches with 10,000 people who just march across, what are you going to do ? Shoot them ? Let them in ? This isn’t a small trickle of people, but a flood. And it is organised, both as a people smuggling money making venture and as a political challenge like the recent “caravans” that are setup and financed by political opponents of Trump.
        
        And of course the wall isn’t a continuous barrier, a portion of the border is along the Rio Grande river where it is a significant barrier which can be policed relatively easily without a “wall”.
        
        Walls work, which is why so many countries and institutions use them as a primary control mechanism.

        Better still, make an electric fence, but not just a farm-grade fence, a 1.21GW fence. One that zaps anyone that approaches within 300′, like a giant insect zapper without the blue light.
        
        This could be powered by a series of small (submarine sized) nuclear reactors along the border.
        
        Nuclear waste could simply be dumped into the Rio Grande to make sure that any swimmers would be sterilized in the process.

        Walls have a purpose, so long as you are actually thinking about what you are trying to protect, and the risk/reward for those who want to circumvent.
        
        Building a supply line for hundreds of millions of dollars worth of drugs: people get seriously resourceful. They’ll buy planes, boats, tunnel boring machines, fill truck tires, false floors in cars. Let’s not forget catapults and trebuchets to physically hurl drugs over the existing fence – even Trump acknowledged that happens.
        
        The same level of resourcefulness and willing to invest in technology doesn’t really apply to someone who wants to take your PS4 or panties.

        A wall certainly serves a purpose, but I think it has had FAR too much single-minded emphasis, and the benefits way overstated and contrived, and the shortcomings forgotten.

  Why do Christians still support Trump? I mean here’s a Manhattan billionaire who has been married a number of times and freely boasts multiple girlfriends and has a loud abrasive personality.
  
  One of the answers is that he is the antidote to Obama. Obama spoke nicely and looked good and even went to church. But like many on the far left when push came to shove he was an aggressive secularist who never let his Christianity get in the way of the progressive left agenda. So Obama for example was an abortion extremist who never voted for any restrictions to abortion at any time and for any reason.
  
  Trump on the other hand has stopped the funding of agencies who promote abortion overseas. Trump has actively supported the pro-life agenda and the recent pro-life march of hundreds of thousands of people, shamefully underreported by the media.
  
  Trump stood up for the little sisters of the poor who under Obama regulations were being forced to pay for contraceptives as part of their health insurance. Under his administration the Justice Department has dropped their action against this small group of elderly nuns.
  
  Trump has actively worked to rescue Americans held captive overseas for their religious faith. The freeing of the pastor in Turkey is a great example. No other US president would have had the courage to impose sanctions on Turkey until they freed that pastor.
  
  People talk about Trump’s character. And yes he is loud and yes he can be boorish. However he has one singular virtue and that is courage. As Winston Churchill said that courage is an important virtue because it makes the exercise of the other virtues possible.
  
  Despite overwhelming force and vitriol used against him every day by the secular left he has stood firm and has advanced the cause of personal freedom and liberty. The leftist agenda of secularism and radical egalitarianism and socialism is finally being pushed back.
  
  Trump may prove to be the most consequential president of our lifetime. His thinking about issues like trade and national sovereignty and not getting involved in endless wars is in a sense profound. Although not wrapped up in the language of the intellectual class his ideas make a lot of sense.
  
  Unfortunately here in New Zealand we are once more undergoing the painful rule of the radical leftists. Oh for a voice here who would stand up for individual freedom, freedom of religion and freedom for families and communities to make their own decisions about how to run their lives and raise their children.

      Yes but everything has a worldview underpinning it. Obama’s worldview was a secular viewpoint based on an expanding government and hostility to the Christian worldview. Not the Muslim world view which he was very supportive of.
      
      Trump has a more common sense worldview which intersects with Christian understanding on a number of points, such as the importance of religious freedom.
      
      But yes he is commander-in-chief, not pastor in chief.

      Fair question SGA. Right now there is reasonable freedom of religion in terms of going to church without persecution and being a Christian without persecution.
      
      However the signs for the future are not good. For example you cannot bring a Christian worldview to sexual matters in the mainstream media. So anyone who says “homosexuality is a sin” will not get their letter published in the newspaper. Say that on community radio and the manager will immediately come in and shut down the show (which I have personal experience of).
      
      Islam on the other hand will get a respectful hearing at every point by the mainstream media and by government officials. So I would say there are 2 points of pressure on the Christian faith in New Zealand at the moment. Firstly would be the process of secularisation and secondly the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.

      So freedom of speech would be one area. Brian Tamaki does get airtime in the sense of lots of media coverage but always with a negative slant. So I would say I would just like reporters to exercise some fairness and some balance in the coverage of Christian matters and the Christian church.
      
      I would add a caveat that freedom of speech is under threat in lots of ways in New Zealand at the moment. The banning of Don Brash from Massey University for having a right of centre viewpoint on race relations would be an example.

    He also appears to have turned the corner in terms of his behaviour. He is very supportive of his children and appears to be a loving grandfather.
    
    What would lose him Christian support would be something like having an affair in the Oval Office with an intern. Just to take a totally hypothetical example 🙂

      Obama was an abortion extremist who according to reports was a faithful family man. His being a faithful family man did not make his support for abortion right.
      
      Right now in New York legislation has just been signed by the governor allowing abortion right up to the moment of birth. Not many people would be okay with that? But that is where we are in the West at the moment.
      
      Giving a convicted murderer a lethal injection is wrong according to liberal progressives. But giving an innocent baby a lethal injection just before birth is perfectly okay?
      
      I think we can agree that something is not right in this scenario.

We have had very effective birth control for >50 years, so no need to unnecessarily restrict women to having one sexual partner that society has bound them to for life to manage the inevitable sprogs that occur as a result of sex without contraception.     Holy fuck, that’s setting a pretty low bar for “intellectual”. Trump’s language is on a par with Sue Bradford’s (albeit not with the same talking points).
    
    The most charitable interpretation of that claim is that Trump is the “Forrest Gump” of presidents; doing smart things unwittingly but in a charming, unassuming manner. But no, Trump is not polite, not skilled, and has no respect for anyone that doesn’t have their tongue lodged firmly in his anus.

You turn to the devil and practically scream “Monica Belluci? I’m stuck here for eternity making love to the least desirable woman who ever existed while that bastard Winston is doing Monica Bellucci?”

Pike River families blast police investigation
In rarely seen footage taken from down at the portal, a ‘clunk’ sound can be heard, which some say is the conveyor belt starting up. The belt can be seen starting to move before the mine explodes. Official documents show authorities considered turning the belt on to give survivors a chance to ride it out, although they cautioned it was a “moderate risk” which could ignite a secondary explosion.
Mr Monk says families have been “neglected” throughout the whole process, police “did not do their investigation properly”, and he’s demanding someone be held responsible.
“There has been no one to investigate what has happened,” says Mr Monk, who lost his son Michael in the mine.

  The Police Commissioner or those in charge of safety can not send anyone into the mine until the mine has been declared safe whether Mr Monk or Little say so, this is so political it stinks of bias and information that until a steadfast answer confirmed by the correct source’s that the mine is safe to enter with a guarantee no life will be lost then no one should enter the mine. If they go into the mine their should be no bullshit to who gave the orders if Little has agreed to it without the safety guarantee then he should be held responsible if their is another tragedy not the anyone that he has appointed to oversee this operation.

  Your favourite TV presenter was there enthusing about all this, telling us about the miles of pipe being flown in by helicopter and so on.
  
  The people on the ground were enthusing over how the mine had got down to almost no methane. (in a coal mine?.)
  
  The police have determined that they will not be entering the mine as it is. Either a wise decision or Labour telling them not to bother. (one never knows these days of political police).
  
  how long before we see an open cut operation suggested?

  The TV news showed the lengths they were going to, to re-enter the mine – pumping in gas which is supposed to clear the mine of the other lethal gas, etc, huge lengths of pipe being choppered in, and whatnot. Although I feel for the families of the miners, I have to say, what a colossal waste of taxpayer money – if it was because you were trying to rescue men who were alive, then sure, but they are gone and it’s hard to see what can be gained by all this.

All logic says that the mine should have been sealed, treated as a grave, and a memorial created for future generations. So according to the media, National was ‘blindsided’ by Jami’s complaints to the Police. Not too surprising as it seemed the Police has yet to invite those complained about to ‘help with inquiries’.
Seems to be over sensationalising. Jami has already accused National of some issue with a donation, but National has checked and did not see a problem.
The other one concerns the female MP’s alleged death threat which was really a death wish. I commented on this here a few days ago and it seems a long stretch to suggest a wish that someone was dead could be construed as a threat to kill or similar.
But anything for a good story.

Conveniently hiding the facts and truths of what really is going on in NZ. Yes people are in free food queues , people are sleeping in cars,because her Government cant house or help them . Living costs are rising almost out of control.
Yet she is quite fanatic about the myth of Climate Change. In fact NZs so called emissions are almost negligible. Even though she is supporting the myth NZ is committed to hand over billions and billions of dollars to other nations that have emissions out of control.
Surely the welfare of NZs is more important than lining the pockets of other Nations who dont want to be sucked into the myth that Ardern has committed NZ to. Said to be in the vicinity of Thirty Six Billion Dollars over circa 30 years.Go figure that.

  I love CO2. It is net beneficial to humanity at levels many times what we have today. Quite literally, the rocks that make mountains, and on which have build civilisation, owe their existence to atmospheric CO2. Plant life, which sustains us, flourishes thanks to CO2.
  
  It’s well past time to stop demonising ’emissions’. We can, and should, go after particulate-based air pollution, and water system pollutants, but ’emissions’ as they are described, are great for civilisation.

    He did serve in the USMC, served as a rifleman for a brief period then trained as a sparky and spent the rest of his service as a refrigerator technician in Nebraska. Never served overseas, was recorded as AWOL three times, discharged still as a Private.
    
    It isn’t clear if he ever directly claimed to be a Vietnam Vet though he certainly implied it. He did claim to be a “Recon Ranger” which is a mishmash term of no official meaning. The MSM however has frequently directly claimed that he was a Vietnam Vet.
    
    And this whole incident was staged. There were two “film makers” who organised for him to go into the group of boys and be confrontational. They filmed it and released the deceptively edited snippets to the MSM who predictably ran with the created narrative. It wasn’t until a full video, apparently actually recorded by one of the Black Israelite group who were heckling and shouting racist and homophobic slurs at the boys, was made available that honest observers could see the true nature of what happened.
    
    These boys have subsequently been harassed, doxxed, and had numerous death threats aimed at them. People doing s have not been banned from Twitter (for example) and although some have apologised, most have not. About the only positive is that once again the true nature of the left has been revealed – and the true heart of their belief exposed – hatred.

  In tis assertion he is 100% right. The backpedalling from various news outlets, including CNN, when they realised that they breathlessly threw out a narrative based on the most minimal information is a bit refreshing, although some are still pushing the White bad, minority good rhetoric. I guess old habits die hard.
  
  I guess what we are seeing is the true nature of the left, who seem to want nothing more than to place this young man in the middle of a virtual shame circle (a favourite tactic of the Chinese Communists) until he cracks.
  
  This is not a situation that this kid asked for. What he did was not unreasonable. The look on his face has been catergorised as full of hatred. He’s 16. The look on his face would have been the same that I would have had at 16. The nervous grin of someone who is wondering what the fuck is going on.
  
  The levels of violence in the threats that have been subjected to this young man from a caring and progressive left is breathtaking. Even our own Standard is guilty of this.
  
  This is the same left that would have police abandon police chases when a 16 year old is involved, because they don’t know better.
  
  I hope that Nick Sandmann is going to be OK over this. If he can take any comfort from this, it should be noted that a number of high profile figures from the left have seen this as having gone to far, and are now looking at their actions in a more considered light.

  I don’t know where the problems lie, but anyone with two eyes in their head can see rugby in NZ has a number of problems.
  So does cricket for that matter.
  In both cases the national teams are full of talent, but the general public doesn’t want to know.

  America used to fiddle around quite a bit in the politics of a variety of South American countries. Doesn’t seem to have done much good in the past.
  The existing president of Venezuela is a disaster. Who’s to say this new bloke is going to be any better?

    It’s not just the US and Canada, most of South America has joined in though I think Columbia supports Maduro.
    
    It’s a tough situation, I think we are seeing enough genuine information to conclude that Venezuela has become a disaster area and that the administration of Maduro has become a thugocracy with terrible outcomes for the great mass of the people of the country. People are starving, dying, and fleeing the country in great numbers.
    
    However we have seen from past experience that an external invasion or externally promoted revolution is rarely successful to overthrow such regimes. I can think of only one obvious success (and we don’t know a hell of a lot about how brutal it was) and that is when Vietnam invaded Kampuchea and overthrew the Pol Pot regime. But where external actors try to help even with at least reasonable intentions unless the revolution is essentially internal it doesn’t appear to work. Not that all internal revolutions are positive either, but they do tend to create a more stable state of affairs, sometimes better, sometimes worse.
    
    Not sure where the US is going with this, I cannot easily believe that they intend to intervene militarily and the opposition in Venezuela, large as it probably is, has no military wing and the Maduro regime has a virtual monopoly on violence. Could end very badly, but it is still driven by internal forces, so may end up with a positive result.

Mad panic.
Daughter calls wife and off they speed to the ER. I receive call at work and race off to ER.
Granddaughter examined, wounds cleaned and sedated (to calm her) within minutes of arrival at ER.
Within thd half hour doctor, nurse and young medical student return to examination room, wounds cleaned again and stitched by student while doctor supervises and nurse chats with granddaughter to distract her. Minutes later, wounds stitched, popsicle and colouring book issued, ER staff thanked profusely, we depart for home.
Total due upon release from hospital….$0.00 Canadian.
No house remortaged.
No credit card maxed out.
No line of credit maxed out.
Do I resent the fact that my tax dollars that day went to help the other parents in the ER with kids that day? The baby running a high fever or the child who needed an X-ray to see if a sprained wrist was broken?
Not in a heartbeat.

We didn’t do very well in the cricket yesterday, did we? I’m not a follower of cricket, but I happened to turn on the TV and there was India smashing is all over the field. Great location though and Napier looked absolutely stunning as night fell and the sky lit up behind those beautiful trees along Marine Parade.

I suppose those trees will go soon though. The Maoris will want them all cut down because they aren’t indigenous. And of course, Napier itself will have its name changed too. Oh well… c’est last vie….

Some of the fielding was great with all that skidding along, picking up the ball and throwing it back with great accuracy. All in one fluid movement.

So when you said “they’ll probably lose the next game”, did you really mean the next game (an ODI won by NZ), or the next four games (3ODIs and a T20 all won by NZ), or just this latest, won by India in the opening ODI of a six-match series? Or did you mean they will lose their next test, against Bangladesh at Hamilton at the end of February?

Millane, from Wickford, Essex, disappeared on December 1 after last being seen in Auckland’s central city. Her body was found a week later in the Waitākere Ranges and a 26-year-old man, who had name suppression, was charged with her murder.

Ardern, who is at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, is one of about 20 guests invited to dine with the search engine giant’s representatives on Thursday morning (NZ time).

    I would support name suppression if in granting suppression, the judge had to explain why in this case revealing the name would adversely affect a trial. And specifically, not just meaningful waffle. Otherwise people think they are just being taken for fools. Why wouldn’t the foreign press publish his name? The other morning I turned on Fox and Cavuto had a summary of 2/3 decade of John Bogle clips and there was one on Davos and how originally it was setup as a serious economic forum for key minds to discuss key issues facing the global economy. Then it all changed and it became about activist celebrities and leftwing politicians. Apparently about 10 years ago Bogle wanted to attend and speak his mind, they told him it was $25k for a ticket, he laughed at them. Cindy being there just shows the joke it has become.

There has been a growing scandal, particularly involving one of his 3 extreme rightwing politician sons, Flávio. Unexplained large sums of money moving in and out of his account by one of his aides, an ex-policeman. Also large sums of money moving through the aide’s account. They are avoiding giving reasonable explanations, saying it is to do with sales of cars and apartments but there’s a clear pattern of illegal transfers. That aide, Queiroz, is also a close friend of Jair Bolsonaro and a payment was also made to Bolsonaro’s wife, which hasn’t been properly explained.

Last year, a left wing feminist Rio de Janeiro councillor, Marielle Franco, was murdered on the street and the investigations led to the arrests yesterday of some 13 alleged members of a militia gang, whose main figure is suspected of the killing. This week there have been a few items in the news that help one understand why NZ is a screw up.

Basically, we have politicians and policy makers who don’t know what they are doing and relying on dodgy statistics.

My first bit of evidence is Hugh and his reports, in last year’s Demographia report is a table on world cities and population density. Auckland comes in circa 240th for population size, but it is the density stats are rubbished. They have taken the whole of the supercity population, but they have taken only the land area of the old Aucklad, Manukau, North Shore and Waitakere cities (they’ve omitted more than 50% of Auckland’s land area, but not population). This then produces a density of more than 10,000 people per square km. These bulls**t numbers are in international reports but even worse are used by policy makers, planners and lobbyists to justify all of their wheelbarrow pushing projects. Which then explain when completed they don’t deliver – eg the need for Auckland’s tram etc.

Evidence 2
This week Auckland Transport announced the fare increases for 2019-20, it is obliged to review fares annually.
In explaining the fares, much was made of the number of passengers was highlighted (the number of 96 mill was used). The number used overstates the number of passengers by 15% by counting boardings on PT vehicles rather than the completed journeys by passengers. This is because the passengers will start a journey on one bus and during the course of the journey may transfer to other buses to complete the journey one or more times. Now AT prefer politicians and lobby groups to use the inflated numbers as a measure of “success” in order to lobby for more money to provide even more services.

Evidence 3
Twitford and his own personal crisis with KiwiBuild. For 6 years, we’ve been told there was a crisis on housing an that Liebore had the solution. They were going to build 100,000 homes over 10 years. Reality is as we’ve seen something completely different, but the interesting thing is the numbers of people who have pre qualified for a KiwiBuild home (267) and the number who could even be bothered to click on the website (10,000). Simple question for Twitford, where is the evidence suggesting there was ever demand for 100,000 KiwiBuild houses, or did you rely on manufactured statistics and too many “breathless” John Campbell stories?

With these types of examples is it any wonder NZ’s public policy, infrastructure provision and productivity is what it is, shi**e!

I had not appreciated how dire our relative productivity performance had been over the last decade.

Broad measures of wellbeing are fine. However, access to modern drugs, MRI machines, cars, and roads, require wealth. So when people say that it isn’t “fair” that Australians have access to a wide range of pharmaceuticals not available in New Zealand, they could do well to reflect on the productivity story. Collectively, the country has decided to pretend to be rich by selling price inflated houses to each other.

NZers don’t invest in productive activity because our regulatory and tax structure doesn’t reward that in comparison to property or investing offshore.         Did many hours of work in NZ, bunting against unions, in different places, but worked the angles, so did very well.
        Very high tax rates paid were paid, as I did pay when overseas.
        Overseas as well, long hours and long stints, but was well aware of the globalization of labour, in other words you have to be worth at least 2-3 foreigners, and they put the hours in, like many kiwis in NZ would not believe.
        
        Back in NZ, to maintain and enhance that nest egg, with increased skills and productivity.
        
        Feeling now, if I reduce work input, that I can not rely on value of capital to make a return.
        
        I notice that any major transaction, vechicle, property, banking, solictor, accountant, now requires be now run past Internal Affairs Ministry. So far not a problem, but what is the next step with that data?

  It’s not going to be retrospective. People will be paying tax on future gains. The losers will be young people who will have to pay the tax for the rest of their working lives, not older people who will only have to pay between 2020 and when they retire.
  
  And it will not affect property prices much because it doesn’t change the attractiveness of property investment relative to shares. They are both subject to the tax.

  There is an awkward situation at present where there is a pseudo capital gains tax on the sale of certain assets and there is no ‘bright line’ as to when the tax (at income tax rates in the year the gain is realised) applies. It depends on whether IRD considers you have purchased the asset with the intention of selling it ie ‘trading’. So IRD has decreed that gains on the sale of gold or bitcoin are taxable since they see no other purpose for acquiring the asset than to sell it in due course. Shares are the tricky one – how many ‘sell’ transactions can you do in a year without IRD wanting to tax the gains. If you invest in a start-up and the value of the shares increase 100 or 1000 times, is the gain on sale taxable? If you consistently beat the odds on the TAB the gains can become taxable.
  A formal capital gains tax could provide better certainty in such cases. Also the CGT rates would be hopefully lower than for income tax making the situation somewhat tolerable.

    I realise that I’ll be in for a clobbering for this but I have a bit of time for Taylor & his antics. He did the crime & then did the time but instead of assaulting guards, organising riots or trying to burn down the prison he turned to books & education to exact his vengeance.
    
    From smoking bans to voting rights & media bans his was a largely peaceful protest. He played the system & often won.

Here’s my wellness budget plans

Violent crime down to near zero so we can all stay well and alive.
Maori women limited to one child so that their children can be brought up better.
All children must get good qualifications or study a trade.
All beneficiaries made to do some sort of work, so that they feel well about themselves.
A real war on drugs is started to get rid of the scourge of drug use and dependency.
All over weight people must attend the gym at their expense and get down to a normal weight. So that they can be well, and so that the rest of us do not suffer visual pollution.

Plans for a new interchange at the Kāpiti expressway’s northern end have been scrapped.

The Peka Peka interchange was approved by the National Government in July 2017, but has faced an uncertain future since the Labour-led Government came to power months later.

Peka Peka, on the Kāpiti Coast, sits at the northern tip of the $630 million Kāpiti expressway that opened in 2017. The expressway is currently being extended north to Ōtaki, for $330m, meaning the small seaside town will find itself near the middle of the completed expressway.

Am I the only one annoyed that Huawei are getting the short shrift because of alleged “security concerns”, but these concerns aren’t being spelled out? In other words, these concerns might all be so much bullshit.
Jacinda tells us it’s not discrimination, but that’s probably because it looks so much like it is.
Pleas like “The Government says we have to trust its spy agency’s decision to reject a joint deal ” sound a little too much like “read between the lines” for my liking.
Do we really want to pay more for our 5G because we’d rather have the USA spying on us (just as likely IMHO) than the Chinese?

    We have already deeply compromised ourselves with the Chinese regime by our needless acceptance of their influence in our domestic politics. We have a clear choice with their telecommunications companies (which are legally and explicitly in the service of the Chinese communist party) – prove that you are clean.
    Of course it is a concern that we sign ourselves up to the expansion of the surveillance state and its partners. But that is truly so much the lesser of two evils that it really doesn’t even merit discussion.

Nearly all his mates off that have died not very nicely and he was close to troppo for the last few years. Managed to have 4 wives or something. Very sad of course.

        There’s a town in Iran where natural radiation results in year doses 10x higher than the maximum annual dose allowed for anyone working with radioactivity in the west. As yet no sign of any higher numbers of cancers etc amongst their population.
        The reality of radiation appears to be that it is much less dangerous to humans in moderate doses than what linear-no-threshold models used from 70’s onwards predict.
