      I know the term “Dark Ages” is in PC nowadays, but their culture is rooted in the migration and invasion era formally known as the Dark Ages, where tribal groups were moving into and overrunning other cultures, and the migration groups regarded themselves as effectively an independant entity, not subject to the laws of the surrounding culture.
      They see themselves as effectively conquerors in progress, at war with those not of their tribe, with a right to pillage.
      It is a mentality that views outsiders either as contemptible sheep to be intimidated and shorn, or as a threat to be fought.

    Then I got bailed up by an evil-looking Gypsy crone who thrust a sprig of some plant at me and demanded a quid for it.
    
    ‘No, thanks’, I said.
    
    She screamed something about me coming under the ‘curse of the gypsy’ if I didn’t fork out ‘her’ dough.
    
    She STOPPED screaming when the mate I was with, 6 ft 6 inches of prime rugby forward, leaned over her and told her about the ‘curse of the lock’s foot’ she’d encounter if she didn’t just, erm, ‘move away quickly’…

    100 blades cost NZD25 or so and each lasts me over a week, so it costs me less than $1 a month in blades.
    
    Any of those multi-blade cartridges cost many times that and you’re locked in to one manufacturer.

        At the prices you can go with full premium brands and still be saving a bundle compared to the plastic cartridges.
        
        I started off with a mixed taster pack. I found Feather were bloody brutal and cut me up a lot.
        
        I settled on Astra (Russian). I found they last well and perform very well in my razor handle (Muhle R89) and my holding style etc.
        
        Although all the blades are the same size, they are cut with different bevels. and different handles pitch the blade in different ways. Thus you get different results depending on different handles/blades/skin etc.
        
        If you give this a try, I thoroughly recommend a Muhle + a trial pack to get started.

      Yes I agree they are not as good as the higher end blades, but they are a quarter of the price.
      
      If you want to save money, an old fashioned razor with a good blade is the way to go. The shave is great. Downside is it takes practice and more time.

      tf78,We use safe edge razor blades in my workshop for scraping off old service reminder stickers ,one of my suppliers had a “special” on packs of 100 blades so I purchased 2 packs .
      Without a word of a lie a new blade would scrape off 1 sticker and would be so blunt it was useless for any other use,sometimes 2 blades were needed,

  The problem is that just about everybody at CNN has an advanced case of Trump derangement syndrome. Yesterday they were going on about how Trump served fast food to an American football team visiting the White House. They claimed that it was racist! How can serving fast food to an American football team be racist? But that is the level of discourse on CNN.
  
  Many of them have become unhinged. They hate Trump so much that they have become unhinged.
  
  CNN could get their ratings back. Just hire a few pro Trump anchors. Have some more balance in their coverage. Actually become a news organisation again rather than a propaganda network that exists only to make the world safe for Liberal Democrats and to bring down the duly elected President of the United States.

I was born and raised in London during WWII and came to New Zealand on a short term contract almost 50 years ago, and liked what we saw and stayed.
I am now ashamed of what is happening in the UK with Brexit as this is what a Democratic vote endorsed leaving.
Since then all hell has passed from those who were against it despite the vote. Corban and the Labour Party are in favour of Brexit, when it suits.
Now we see almost certainly that May’s best efforts are to be thwarted, again from those who would not stand up for the job – which nobody wanted as beyond their brain power and born to rule ideas.
So we re seeing both that Germany finally won the War and the Irish are at it again finally holding the UK the enemy since 1921.
No longer Great Britain – can never be Great again despite hundreds of years of some sanity.
Like New Zealand the media have had a great part in this position being against anything a Conservative/National Government may suggest.
I am ashamed to have held a UK passport now (not for many years anyhow).
I hope they like what the communist Corbyn will have to offer when he becomes Prime Minister shortly. (a bit like Princess Di Ardern –
born to rule).
This is a very sad day in my life as all my heritage is now being finally eroded by immature incompetent school children in the British Parliament – they do not know what they do – the vote was to leave.
I am told that as I am in my very twilight of my life why should I care – but I do.

On the subject of police chases.

It transpires that one of the 3 teenagers killed in Christchurch regarded stealing cars as a hobby. He had been in CYPS care for some time. He had been caught in a stolen car a number of times but due to his age, was never actually arrested, because you know, rights.

One can only wonder if the full weight of the law was applied at the first offense, this young man, and his 2 friends might be alive today, and on a different path.

The way we handle our young offenders has to be examined. Not police pursuits. There was a call that police should not pursue teenagers. Well, how are the police supposed to know the identity of a driver until they stop him?

We need to be harder, sooner. Young men like these need clear boundaries so that they now where their limits are, and the earlier these are introduced, the better.

      It’s a well known fact that children hear and understand long before they can verbalise. Parents start ‘educating’ their children from babyhood. They are watched, and heard. Parents should ‘walk the talk’ and explain the reasons for doing so.
      The trouble is, many do not even chat to their kids
      who arrive at school with no conversation, never mind social skills.
      And by that time the future pathway is pretty much laid out.

  + developers and construction companies go under as few investors buy
  + beneficiaries of assets in trusts, including their homes, find out they are impacted
  + same when rules on inheritance are published
  + small business owners, farmers, share owners figure out the impact on their retirement savings.
  
  On the upside, renovation companies will do well as funds pour into main homes. Likewise construction companies building social housing, art dealers, luxury cruise lines, swimming pool installers, high end car retailers ….

Within the next 24 hours the British Parliament is expected to vote on Mrs May’s travesty of a Brexit deal which would lock the UK into a subservient relationship with the EU which it could never leave without the EU’s permission and make it impossible for the UK to enter into FTAs with other countries, as well as potentially splitting off Northern Ireland from the UK . If it is defeated as expected there is likely to be a move by the Remainer MPs to delay Brexit indefinitely or to promote another referendum offering a limited choice between staying in the EU and a warmed over version of May’s “deal”. This fiasco is a striking example of how the “elites” conspire to undermine the wishes of the majority. We face similar problems here, particularly over mass immigration which is unsustainable and is rapidly diminishing New Zealanders’ quality of life by the burden it imposes on infrastructure, services, the environment and the housing market. The coalition’s support for the UN Migration Compact, while largely symbolic at this stage, was a two-fingered salute to the concerns of New Zealanders about the future of their country. It will not be forgotten.

Trevor Mallard is a disgrace. He tweets as @SpeakerTrevor, but I cannot see his tweets as he blocked me some time ago, along with dozens of other Twitter users.

Last night the list of people he has blocked rose by one. Philip Duncan from WeatherWatch was blocked by Mallard because he dared to criticise the actions of another Labour MP and Minister, Dr Megan Woods. Duncan has been campaigning for years for open access to weather data which NIWA guards secretly, and Woods is stonewalling him.

Phil Duncan’s “crime” was to express his frustration with Woods’ continued stonewalling. For his “sins” he copped a lecture from Mallard, and later, a gobful of Mallard’s best spite. Check out an example here, along with Duncan’s response to it, revealing he is in fact a Labour voter:

I have had numerous interactions with Phil Duncan on Twitter. He is one of the most obliging, decent people on there, even if his choice of political parties is questionable. He has, on a number of occasions, given my weather snapshots for upcoming events such as my daughter’s wedding which we at variance with those of MetService, but right on the money. I can’t do that any more. because Duncan has deactivated his Twitter profile.

Here’s the real irony though. Trevor Mallard is currently running an investigation into bullying at Parliament. I wonder if he has thought to start with his own office first?

This time it was not a bobby calf or a puppy that these cowardly scum attacked. If Garth the Knife and his S.S. troopers do target this victim and ridicule his girlfriend, will NewstalkZzzzzzB hosts join in with the campaign and slag them off round the clock for the next three or four months?

… The car became bogged down in some mud, however Cramond caught up with the man on a farm race where, joined by Torrington, the main assault allegedly occurred.

As Wrigley told the jury, the man had his head repeatedly kicked and stomped on. He was strangled, had his finger severely bitten by Torrington, and his genitals were stomped on.

Cramond had also told him “that I was a woman beater and I was going to get my come-uppance”.

Reading out his victim impact statement at the sentencing of Cramond and Torrington, the man recalled how the pair were “stuffing rocks and cow s… into my mouth and rubbing it into my eyes. I’ve lost my right eye completely and vision is blurred in my left.” He was bitten and repeatedly punched and kicked, and his body, memory, hearing, and confidence were affected.

“Your will to kill me is my will to survive,” he told his attackers through his statement. “I’ve accepted where I’ve gone wrong. Can you?”

His partner said she considered Torrington a mate, but she was now scared of the dark and of trusting others.

Nothing stopped the attack, “not my cries of horror, my pleas – nothing”. ….

    The Maori part of the anthem has always been there, it just hasn’t been sung, along with a number of English verses that are never sung.
    Both the English & Maori verses were written in the 19th century. However back then and up until the 1970s God Save the Queen/King was the anthem. Now we have two anthems. One of the few countries in the world.
    Typical NZ. Nobody wants to make the big decision in case someone gets upset so we have two anthems instead of telling the UK, who probably dont care anyway, that we’re dropping their one.
    I think we should drop the poms altogether. They never look happy about having to grin their way around the the country constantly listening to earnest old farts talking about kauri die back or whatever.

    PS. If you want to confirm your local magnetic declination then use the shadow of a plumb line at your local solar noon – see eg:

    You then compare your shadow line to a compass.

        No different to using a normal compass. It’s fine as long as you allow for the current magnetic declination of your location. The phone apps should do that automatically since they can determine your location from GPS. As long as the app developer is providing the app with an up to date magnetic declination map then all should be well.

    Railguns are cool, but not better or cheaper than missiles. Railgun projectiles are still super expensive with really high spec inertial guidance packages required. Mass produced solid rocket motors are cheap and can have a very high rate of fire. The US as fitting out 4 trident subs to each carry hundreds of missiles to do the job instead.

Demonise plastic bags while ignoring the far larger problem of soft plastics

For some time I wondered why supermarkets et al were hell-bent on getting rid of plastic bags, when it seems to me that the far bigger problem is all the plastic wrapping that they sell their goods in. Next time you go to the supermarket, take a look in your reusable environmentally-friendly bag and start counting how many items in there are wrapped in plastic. Bread (in bread-bags), meats on plastic trays and wrapped in plastic, packets of biscuits, confectionery – the list goes on.

Then last year my daughter told us that Countdown would accept these so-called ‘soft plastics’ for recycling, and so the wife would dutifully take along the vast pile of soft plastics – which is far bigger than the pile of plastic bags which we actually reuse – to Countdown.

Until this week, when she was told they no longer accept them. The Soft Plastics Scheme can no longer collect soft plastics, because there’s so much that they’re overwhelmed, so it’s on hold while work is done to look for a solution.

So what do we do with these soft plastics? The advice from Countdown is this:

For now, customers will need to put their plastic waste in their normal household rubbish bin.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) says nationwide December sales volumes sank to their lowest level in seven years, dropping 13%, with Auckland sales volumes down 24% to their lowest level in 10 years.

Nationally REINZ says December 2018 sales came in at 5,330, a year-on-year drop of 787 from 6,117 in December 2017. Median days to sell increased to 35 from 32. The national median price rose $8,250 year-on-year, or 1.5%, to $560,000.

In Auckland December sales volumes dropped 429, or 24%, to 1,336 from 1,765 in December 2017. That was the lowest Auckland December sales volumes since 1,250 in December 2008. It is news to me that it is normal for boys to steal cars.

These boys were maniacs, just like their father. They were causing mayhem and misery to everyone that was not family or friend.

As for the drop kick father… why isn’t he in prison already?
