This is by far best and most accurate summary of the Gilet Jaunes movement I have read. It matches up exactly with the conversations I’ve had with my friends in France.

  Two sections stand out for me:
  
  1) On the Antifa….. rather than being radicals, are actually the system itself & enforcers of the prevailing orthodoxy:
  
  In Bordeaux last Saturday, Yellow Vests had to fight off an attack by Antifa.
  
  It is now completely clear (as indeed it always has been) that the self-styled “Antifascists” are the watch dogs of the status quo. In their tireless search for “fascists”, the Antifa attack anything that moves. In effect, they protect stagnation. And curiously enough, Antifa violence is tolerated by the same State and the same police who insult, attack and arrest more peaceful demonstrators. In short, the Antifa are the storm troopers of the current system.
  
  2) On the tyranny of Finance Capitalism:
  
  Power lies with a technocracy in the service of “the Markets”, meaning the power of finance capital. This technocracy aspires to remake human society, our own societies and those all over the planet, in the interests of a certain capitalism. It uses economic sanctions, overwhelming propaganda and military force (NATO) in a “globalization” project that shapes people’s lives without their consent. Macron is the very embodiment of this system. He was chosen by that famous elite to carry through the measures dictated by “the Markets”, enforced by the European Union. He cannot give in. But now that people are awake to what is going on, they won’t stop either.
  
  The tyranny of rootless “finance capitalism” was no better evidenced than a case I saw recently of the importation of 200 Chinese Freezing Workers to work in Invercargill despite an abundance of qualified locals because the former were much cheaper as they’d work for salaries rather than hourly rates.
  
  Capitalism is the only answer but we need a capitalism fit for the people rather than engineering a people fit for what is now a bastardised form of capitalism.

    In Southland/Invercargill there is not “an abundance of qualified locals” and there is a growing reluctance for freezing workers to spend a portion of the season in the area. In the days of the Ocean Beach operation numerous workers completed their respective seasons by working the final six weeks in the South.

        I was there the day OB closed…1985? What I am concerned about is you spouting the union line that there is “an abundance of qualified workers” in Invercargill. There isn’t! If there are no workers available then why oughtn’t labour be sourced from other countries? Doing so does not establish that they are being poorly paid etc.. If you have visited any NZ public hospital in recent times, ask the young doctors how many of them qualified in NZ or were imported. Despite there being a greater number of Law Graduates being churned out of NZ universities the number of lawyers is increasing only marginally. This has led to numerous provincial law firms sourcing lawyers who qualified elsewhere. What is intrinsically wrong with this unless you are fully wedded to regressive union unionised rhetoric?

        There are always “workers” available – it just depends on what you’re going to pay them and the conditions you will provide them. You are suffering from the “lump of Labour fallacy” that NZ has a fixed number of jobs that must be filled.

        The whole NZ economy is out of balance .It has not been able to grow in an ordered fashion and governments have been dictated to by the corporates and banks so that we end up with most of our businesses now owned and run by overseas interests who now push the line about needing immigrants to carry out the work.
        The latest utterance from the horticultural sector explains what is happening.
        A corporate plants 1000 acres in apples without any consideration for the consequences of harvesting in two or three years. Unless of course they know dam well that they will wait until the crop emerges and then jump up and down to the government.’We can’t find any workers’.
        Of course they only want them for three months and then they can piss off somewhere else.
        When the growing sector was owned by the producers themselves mainly as family operations, thing were much more in balance and better for the country all round.
        We have a bunch of politicians dictated to by faceless, financial forces and they treat us , the people, like mushrooms.

        Bullshit about the workers. I’ll tell you what the issue is, from a close inside source in that industry. For this killing season a plant wanted 25 more workers for the chain. They advertised and had initially some 70 responses. All responses were replied to and a preliminary meeting arranged along with the statement that all applicants had to undergo (and pass if they were to be considered further) a mandatory drug test – require by Health and Safety regulations because the work is considered “dangerous” because of knives and saws. Of the 70 odd applicants, 23 turned up, and 4 passed the test. Of those 4 three turned up for their first day, and 2 lasted out the first week.
        
        BTW this is North Island, so the plants don’t have a season as such, and work is pretty much year round. Anyone prepared to stick it out can quickly get qualified and earn significantly more per hour plus regular overtime.
        
        That’s why importing workers is being considered, because too many of the locals are regular drug users and cannot be employed. If you do employ one such and they have an accident, you will be prosecuted for allowing them to work.

        Almost the entire New Zealand workforce consists of “regular drug users.” I don’t know what percentage of the workforce are teetotallers, but it’s a very small one. Somehow the country continues to function.

        Just a short time ago I heard of workers needed for the lower South Island. One day later I read of lack of work opportunity in Northland.
        
        WTF is going wrong with this country. New politicians , new parties and new government please ASAP.
        
        Note: They do come in and they do work for less – a lot less, once all the costs of the journey to NZ , temporary accomodation , and commission to the “people importers” are deducted.
        
        Then we the NZ tax payer is left supporting the NZ people with no work . Loss /loss situation .

      Fifty years ago, Southland farmers were among the most patriotic – and progressive – of New Zealanders.
      
      They were at the forefront as the region redeveloped its port, built a new freezing works and fertiliser works, and attracted an aluminium smelter. It was an period of economic progress, led by locals and their National MPs.
      
      Now they bring in cheap Asian labour for dairy farms, and, then, but not finally, the freezing works. What a contrast. The race these days is to sell out the local region.
      
      As for farmers slaughtering sheep in the streets: didn’t that appalling animal cruelty reflect sheep farmers adjusting to harder times as Muldoon’s crazy stock subsidies ended?
      
      Importing cheap labour from China to undercut wages in this export region is an indictment of Judas Peters as well as the Labour Government. Could Peters and his invisible, party-MP minions dare show their faces in Southland?
      
      The Invercargill seat will likely be an interesting play in the next election, given recent events.

        Smart politicians would realise that temporary cheap foreign workers, whether milking cows, processing meat, or picking fruit, don’t have votes.
        
        Nor do Asian workers waiting for residency recognition.
        
        Meanwhile the tragedy continues: the country writes off a huge proportion of its young people as not worth training, and useless, and imports cheap foreign workers by the thousand.

        Sounds like the marijuana tests are discriminatory, unfair, and flaky.
        
        It it true that you can have an alcoholic slaughterman who was on the booze 12 hours ago flashing his knife around, but a youngster who smoked marijuana a week ago will be shut out because there is a trace in his system still?
        
        The issue that needs to be confronted here is: why would you bring in foreign labour unless they will work for less pay, or work longer for the same pay?
        
        Focusing on cheap “slave” labour is a sure way to destroy an economy. Instead of the drive for better systems, better machinery, better trained staff, the focus is on lowest-cost labour.
        
        The importing of Melanesian and Asian pickers for horticulture, and now workers for farms and freezing works, is an important cause of New Zealand’s poor performance in productivity growth. And productivity growth is key to economic success.
        
        Worse, the country is writing off its young people to hire cheap foreign labour. Think that can last?

        I know of many employers now employing Asian workers at above award rates because they are reliable, sober (not stoned) and prepared to work the extra hours that many of the jobs demand.
        
        Like ot lump it but that is the fact.
        
        The real reason starts with “welfare” and the recipients lack of desire to persue education. That is also a fact and many on here can attest to that.

      The reason Lorneville and Mataura are getting in overseas workers from China,
      is due to a commercial agreement Alliance Group made with their Chinese Grand Farm business partners several years ago. Alliance was to train a set number of Chinese boners and butchers over the next decade. This excuse that there are a lack of workers is a fallacy, and a smokescreen for Alliances real deal. Just wait until Lornevilles boning rooms cease to exist and start to send out whole carcasses to China. The five way cuts are just a start.         This is the fate of the Telford Rural Polytechnic, which is part of the Wairarapa-based Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre, which has 11 campuses across the country, and has been placed in interim liquidation by the High Court.
        
        Those at stake include nearly 3000 agriculture students.
        
        Will the southern local body politicians and lackeys who have been softened up to imported labour by free trips to China, make a stand and call for support to save the training of all these young locals?
        
        Kill off training for local young people. Give the job to imported cheap labour. Blame the locals, smearing them as lazy drug takers.

  Muliaga was allowed into NZ while clinically obese and did not even inform her own family of her health issues and imminent death.

  They went after Mercury; the contractor; even Helen Clark, the PM.
  They harassed Counties Manukau DHB staff and I was working at the time in a building with the DHB staff. For privacy matters the staff could not inform her family and Muliaga did not tell the truth to her nearest and dearest.
  Media scum were directly harassing DHB staff as they went outside the building. These were staff who were not authorised to give comment and in any event were bound by secrecy such that they could not even tell Folole Muliaga’s family.
  
  Media filth are lying scum.
  Always have been and remain so.

  Sadly they have a following that believe their crap so have not gone away yet.

    Ironically much of the bombing damage that you talk of was caused by the Allied bombing raids on French industrial cities along with Caen and St Nazaire. Tens of thousands of New Zealanders have expeienced either total war or its downstream consequences. British, Dutch and other European post WW2 immigrants and more recently Vietnamese and Cambodians can all attest to the horrors of total war.

    Pedro Goncalves, an employee at the Hotel Mercure opposite the bakery, said he saw firefighters enter the bakery in the morning but he and his co-workers “thought maybe it’s a joke, a false alarm” and they went back to work. The Herald simply can’t help itself. Not content to focus simply on a sportsman’s victory in a tennis tournament it has to regurgitate last year’s ‘news’ about the winner of the ASB Classic, Tennys Sandgren and his ‘chequered history’, which includes amongst other manufactured outrages, supporting President Trump and not enjoying the experience of going to a gay nightclub.

The Herald tells us that his ‘outspoken nature’ threatens to follow him around for the rest of his career’. What they mean, of course, is that dim-witted journalists will keep repeating the same inane jibes every time the man wins a tennis match. Boring.

        Interesting isn’t Maggie, that for some of those events it isn’t known what caused them. Probably local events offshore, maybe undersea landslides, but no obvious earthquake origin for some.
        
        I think I was at a Northland beach when the 1960’s Chilean earthquake tsunami reached NZ, and we all went out to watch. Not a huge surge and went nowhere close to going off the beach or even reaching the high tide line (it was a lowish tide as I recall). Closest I’ve been to that sort of thing. Parents had us all watching from the Sandhills, we weren’t allowed down into the beach.

      Trouble with that view is the geologic time is at such a different scale to human experience. In geological terms, the Auckland volcanos erupted very recently, and the average interval between eruptions is longer than the current quiet period.
      
      So I see no issues with the theory that the Auckland field is likely active and may produce another eruption at some time in the next 100 or 1,000 years. Way too soon to conclude that it won’t, just IMHO.

    Well, apart from the fact that just a few years ago all the Democrats were all in favour of such a wall, and for the same reasons.
    
    There are two primary reason that the Democrats have switched on the wall, one is the “orange man bad” or TDS syndrome. The other is the realisation that Latin American illegal immigrants can be given ways to vote and they overwhelmingly (for cultural reasons) vote Democrat. They are also overwhelmingly negative for the US economy, but that is not a factor when electoral power is involved.
    
    So the Democrats are entirely self-interested and consider only political power in their opposition to a wall. And a third reason they oppose it so vociferously – because they know it would work as intended. It would restrict illegal immigration while having no impact on legal immigration.

      Certainly for apartments in larger blocks there could be a softening of prices as investors have been the main buyers in the past. Would that softening be enough to tempt investors, though, in the current climate of hostility towards landlords, and inevitable downstream impacts on developers and the construction sector. Vicious cycles are hard to reverse unless governments start pouring n money. They could of course do that by buying up flats for social housing. There goes the neighbourhood.
      
      Friend of mine lives in a 90 apartment complex in central Welly. Only 2 are owner occupied and these are decent quality low rise with central gardens, not rabbit hutches.

  Was down in Wellys to see the Terracotta Warriors a few weekends ago. Was fantastic! Was absolutely moved by the Gallipoli exhibition. Beautiful day on the Harbourside. Kids jumping into the sea and not a single pc warning sign in sight. A few beers in the sun.
  
  Don’t get me wrong. I love the Waitemata Harbour and Auckland’s waterfront. There’s been some big improvements.
  
  But nothing beats Wellington on a beautiful summers day, as there is only one Te Papa.

  The road harm in New Zealand is a choice we have made. In Australia they have made a different choice and the road toll continues to decline. Better roads, better driving standards, and more modern cars. That’s what it comes down to.
  
  BTW a friend yesterday has a car that failed its warrant. No brake lights! Also the mechanic noted corrosion in the c pillar and that the engine oil had not been changed in a very long time. And there are thousands of these 20 year old cars on the road.

        As bank of last resort for our grandkids when something goes wrong with their cars I became a wake-up to VTNZ & their skulduggery years ago. It came to a head when the granddaughter’s car got knocked back for a dim parking light. Took it to the mechanic who’s been keeping my equipment on the road for years & he couldn’t find bugger all wrong with the light or its intensity.
        
        What he did find although was a front wheel bearing on the way out less than 20km travelled after the VTNZ inspection.
        
        Since then we have a rule. Take your car anywhere near VTNZ for a WoF & all offers of financial assistance from the old buggers are null & void!

      Changing engine oil has nothing to do with road safety directly. But it is an indicator of the mind set of the person who owns the car. They won’t get the brakes fixed either.
      
      But more importantly, a 1998 corolla bears no resemblance to a 2018 corolla, no matter how well you maintain it. So long as our roads are full of 1990s Mazda Familias and Toyota Corollas, our road deaths will be much higher than in Australia. And cycleways, trams, and buses are not going to change that.
      
      I would advocate making it progressively more expensive to register a car more than 10 years old.

    And thousands of safe, very reliable, and capable 20 year old cars around. I have a 1999 Toyota Corolla 1600 that is ultra reliable and quite economical as well. It is well looked after, but not a sign of rust and the engine is in excellent condition.
    
    Cars from that era are amongst the most reliable around. They are well built typically (especially the Japanese ones) with great anti-corrosion treatment, have very solid engines and transmissions, yet lack the expensive and fragile electronics that are so ludicrously expensive to fix on cars made a decade or so later.

      Yep drive a 20 yr old cefiro wagon. V6 2.5 and never misses a beat. Wore one out at 345k and this one is around 225.
      Tows the caravan just great and is long enough for me to put 3.0 mtr long blinds in.
      Better still it has a lift up back window on the tailgate so anything longer can poke out there.
      Can’t find anything else that will do that. Not even most vans.
      Good to drive and doesn’t bounce all over the place on any little bump like these light cars do.
      Air bags all round, anti skid etc. Years ahead of much of the stuff around.
      
      Would like to replace it with a new one the same.

        Same here. There’s a 1999 Familia sitting in the driveway with 240,000 kms on the clock. Its in almost perfect nick and we keep it for the kids when they come home from offshore for a visit. Had it since 2002 and we just have third party insurance on it now.

      In the military we spent a lot of time in Germany and traveled back and forward. Not only that but our fleet of Landrovers were 50/50 left and right hand drive. I did that for7 years. Only mistake I made was getting in the wrong side occasionally.

  “The development of a new road safety strategy will take until September 2019 and be ready for implementation in 2020. It will outline the steps New Zealand will take to meaningfully reduce deaths and serious injuries over the coming decade.
  
  “While the strategy is being completed we intend to push forward with actions where there is strong evidence of effectiveness.
  
  “The Government has proposed a significant boost in funding to improve local and regional roads right around the country. This will have a particular focus on proven safety treatments, like median and side barriers.
  
  “We’re also considering a significant funding boost to deliver safe walking and cycling infrastructure in our towns and cities.
  
  “Over the next year the Government will consider a number of options for reducing harm on the road, including improving the safety of vehicles entering New Zealand, reducing speeds around schools, and will implement mandatory alcohol interlock device systems for repeat drunk drivers,” Ms Genter said.

I didn’t think Christchurch roading planners could get any worse, but yesterday I was proved wrong. Traveling from Moorhouse Paknsave up Manchester St they have turned the street into 4 lanes (two on each side of the paved island with Fancy new footpaths), getting rid of any street-side parking and the geniuses made the centre lanes “bus” lanes. So what did the car in front of me at the lights want to do? Turn right (heading east) from the far left hand-lane crossing two bus lanes and hope nothing is heading south down Manchester St. Naturally until the car could do this, it held up all the traffic behind it heading straight. Geniuses. Only in a city controlled by the far-far left.

We all know that there are a lot of these.
I think its time we started to look at changing the side of the road we drive on. (And Aussie and the UK)
Wikipedia says that 3/4 of the worlds roads are right hand drive.
Including the USA, China, Brazil, Europe, so most of the world’s population.

He’s been going through some pretty traumatic ‘personal issues’ lately, and was telling me that over the Xmas period, he tried calling *Helpline*. He said all he got was a series of ‘clicks’, but after about twenty fucking minutes there was an automated-message saying, “His call had been recorded for training purposes”.

    Oh Gazza, you can go back to impulse buying, you know, that condition manufacturers actively encourage by placing their products at the end of the aisles. Also choice products are at eye level, the clever buggers, and they even pay for the privilege. Other than those supplied, the princess of course may ban all plastic bags from supermarkets. This will be anti-competitive behaviour as she will be stopping us citizens from buying direct from China; not a sensible move. This video shows a collision between a 1998 and a 2015 corolla. The occupants of one are clearly dead or critically injured. The other lot would walk away with minor injuries. You can’t argue with physics.

I said to my wife today as we followed a 1964 Chev Impala, that the vehicle looked solid, and was, but in a decent head on crash the occupants would probably die instantly. Our modern car, though looking flimsy by comparison, would deploy all 7 air bags and we may survive relatively unharmed. It is all to do with crumple zones as well as door strengthening. I must say though, the Chevy rode along beautifully.

  Yep, we got really great weather here over Xmas 😎 Went out on the boat 4 or 5 days. The fishing was excellent, big Kingi’s, Snapper, GT’s…..we’ve never caught so many to be honest.
  
  Unfortunately no recipes though….can’t stand fish. And certainly don’t want to get any blood & shit in the cockpit. We just give them a quick Iki and then release.

  Recipies? One whole snapper. Don’t gut it, just fillet it and skin it. Butter, pan. Add nothing – salt to taste after. Too many smart arses spoil a good fish with pepper, garlic, herbs, sauces.

Good point over the last hundred years live expectancy has increased as has the number of woman in jail. Clearly we will live longer if we lock more woman up.
Furthermore, the number of the number of woman at our universities has increased and our road toll appears to be on the increase. Clearly educating woman causes deaths on our roads.

Change of topic to something non-political……

If someone is after a 2nd car with a bit more passenger/storage room, would they purchase a SUV or a Station Wagon?

Current thought process is the later is much better in terms of motoring performance (and space) with the former being purchased by those who want a “look at my big car” and like sitting higher up off the road.

Note – don’t need to do any “off-roading” with this car but needs to carry 4 adults, + hunting or fishing or golf gear or take a family of 5 on driving holidays…

  Mazda has a good range. There is the Mazda 6 in wagon.
  I got an SUV last year and, with a tow bar and roof rack, it is very versatile.
  I have not looked back — I just use the rear view camera!
  I bought a couch the other day and was able to fit it inside the rear- with the driver seat well forward.
  With 60/40 rear seat spilt- common now- you can have four people in car and a long item taking up the spilt seat like golf bag/trolley; up to 180 cm in my vehicle.
  Get aftermarket roof rack for $40 to $60 from 1 Day when on sale. Branded are a couple of $ hundy.

  Plenty of options around for SUVs in new and second hand.
  I would certainly avoid anything Holden re reliability.
  My brother would agree – from experience.
  Even my buying him a Holden hat did not alleviate the pain.
  Be wary of the CVT transmission in Toyota. Very sluggish. From about 2010 model or so.
  I avoided this time around.
  Look for 5 year warranty but Mitsubishi have to offer 10 years because their garbage is ..not very good.
  
  The SUV is great. The extra height is good esp going down long straight Dominion road a lot- you can see ahead or e.g. Hgy 27.
  Resale/holding value depends on the market. With SUV being more popular then there is a bigger resale market so it holds up well compared to where there are fewer buyers.
  I’m not sure you would get the size required out of a Subaru Legacy but their road holding is good and they are not the Subaru targeted by thieves!
  
  Exec summary
  My opinion: SUV preferable over Station wagon.
  Avoid: Toyota CVT; Holden; Mitsi; Euro options have high cost of ownership; Jeep at your peril
  Look at: Korean options = Kia and Hyundai -much improved this decade; Mazda got smart and did what Toyota did in 1980s ie. have a progressive range of options; Nissan always steady mid market with good range and resale.

  I do love my 1nd generation Honda CR-V, it’s not quite one of those pretentious, bloated modern things like the CX-5.
  
  What price range are you looking at? I know someone with a Nissan Wingroad (wagon) who likes it and is large enough for their painting gear and at 250,000km+ has shown no problems.
