  Correction. The UK military could have brought it down in seconds were it not for the PC bureaucrats who would not allow it for fear of having stray bullets injuring someone on the ground. Not that hilarious and before we start poking the borax I wonder how NZ authorities would cope in a similar situation. At least the two alleged offenders face five years jail whereas in NZ it would be a few months HD and a few hours picking up rubbish. No BS about name suppression either.

    No they could not, if they could, they would have. They may say they can, but frankly I doubt that until demonstrated.
    
    Drones would have a negligible radar signature, so you couldn’t use radar directed weapons, and they don’t have laser directed weapons yet. A few shotguns is probably all they need, with well trained shooters.

Are Drones Really Dangerous To Airplanes?

But drones don’t pose much of a risk to traditional aviation. Though there is always a risk when you board a plane that an object will be ingested into an engine, our research shows that the problem is far more likely to be a bird than a drone.

Colliding with aircraft

There are on the order of 10 billion birds in U.S. airspace. Although efforts are made to keep them away from airports, where they pose the biggest threat, pilots, airlines, airports and others voluntarily reported 13,414 bird-aircraft collisions on the FAA’s dedicated wildlife strike website in 2014, split about equally between passenger jets and other aircraft including helicopters and small planes. Rarely, these collisions are serious enough to take out a jet engine. In 2014, birds were reported ingested into engines only 417 times, and only 112 of those reports indicated any damage to the aircraft.

It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to manipulate low-information incurious people.

This was a beat up to get the sheeple to demand the govt ‘do something’ eg. ban personal drones.

  You are of course assuming that a drone flying into a commercial airport’s air space is doing nothing more than look to disrupt operations. God forbid that a radical organisation packs it with a couple of kg of Semtex and detonate it within a few metres of a fully laden A380 a few seconds after liftoff. 300,000+ litres of avgas would provide a very efficient funeral pyre for all on board.

        Quite so Brigette. Jet A1 it used to be called…flash point greater than 100F. I got right in the shit in a previous lifetime when I got the Dunedin tank down to 98F! 🙂

        There’s not much difference between kero & diesel. In cold countries they run diesel engines on jet fuel as although it lacks the power it doesn’t go solid at low temperatures.

        Utter bollocks and 300,000 litres of fuel is 65,900 gallons being 527,470 lbs becoming 235 tons
        
        A 747 burning say 10 tonnes an hour on cruise would most likely go around the world in 23.5 hours and I have not heard of that yet, so I don’t think so

        In a word, purity. The additional controls imposed on Jet-A fuel by the associated standard produce a product with well-known properties. When you fuel a plane with Jet-A you can be confident that fuel won’t freeze in the tanks at altitude (at least not unless you cold-soak it below -40 degrees). You also know the fuel will be “clean” and won’t gunk up fuel filters or leave deposits inside the combustion core of the engine that can cause problems later.
        
        On the other hand we don’t burn Jet-A in a Mack Truck because it would be prohibitively expensive: Highway diesel doesn’t have to meet the same strict tolerances as jet fuel, and theres no reason to burn a more tightly specified (and thus more expensive) fuel when a less expensive one is readily available.”…..

  He’d had more injuries than Evel Knievel but from beginnings as a redundant freezing works employee he had his own deer farm within a few years.

        Not so sure about him as a pilot Komata. Rusty Nairn’s the bloke I remember. Took us out of a shithole spot in the Cascade. As I climbed in I can remember being hit by the smell of a whole brewery! 🙂
        Once he got up he flew the thing, hands off the cyclic, all the way back to Taupo, cursing and fiddling two-handed with the radio. When it started to go chop, chop, chop and nosed up he’d nudge the stick forward with one hand and get back to the cursing radio.
        Needless to say I’m still here today however I believe poor old Rusty is long gone.

The Poms said they couldn’t shoot the drones down cause they were worried where all the missing bullets would go. Fuck our jokers could take them out with some shotgun shells with added candlewax, net gun, or just by the choppers downwash…..They need to hire some decent chopper pilots over in Mother Emgland! 🙂
