      Journalists love to talk about leaders needing to go. It’s a very easy way to fill opinion columns. I think it’s premature. Bridges has a hard job to do and I don’t think anyone else would do it much better.
      
      In any case, if the leader gets changed I would appreciate a sudden and clean coup, rather than a drawn-out public process of undermining and leaking.

        Yes, I agree with that. I think he’s handled the JLR thing pretty well.
        He seems to be growing in confidence and has had done good moments in QT recently.
        Frankly I’m not sure whomcould replace him anyway.
        I’d be ok with Judith replacing Paula Bennett as I think she has earned it whereas Bennett is not really performing

    Yes she is still in parliament, but I don’t think there’s any public interest in naming her. Adultery is neither a crime or a disqualifier for being an effective MP. I suspect her name will come out at some point, though.

      The media have not named her, despite publishing a lot about the affair. Even WhaleOil has stopped just short of naming her.

  I seem to remember a very old comment Cam made on Whaleoil some years back that he considered the National Party Board should ‘veto’ nomination of a particular candidate on the grounds that he was too young. He must have been referring to Jami but I cannot be sure of this (Jami at 25 was then the youngest MP in Parliament). Assuming it was Jami, Cam’s comment turned out in retrospect to be right ‘on the mark’.
  I commented at the time that the Board’s power was not intended for that purpose and that the his suitability should be judged during the selection process. My reasoning was that if the Board ‘vetoed’ candidates in other than rather exceptional circumstances, National’s selection processes could start to become like Labour’s where ‘Head Office’ wields enormous influence over the selection process. The purpose of the ‘veto’ process is to weed out those with ‘background’ issues. The only one that became a public issue was the ‘Roger Payne’ case where he appealed his veto unsuccessfully to the High Court judicial review.
  However it seems some modification to the process is needed. Perhaps the Party could make available to those involved with pre-selection and selection things to ponder when considering selection eg age, employment history etc. Jami at the time would have had an ‘excellent’ CV, but in retrospect it was light on *real* (especially outside politics) work experience. That should have set alarm bells ringing at pre-selection and selection processes (I must admit if I was involved at the time I would have thought he was ‘great’). It is reasonable that budding politicians should be expected to have work and life experience before a political career as they will be making decisions affecting the lives of others while in Parliament.

    The checking process starts when potential National candidates attend the Party “candidate School”. That is almost always a pre-requisite for anyone embarking on the selection process. During the pre-selection process, skeletons emerge at all stages, but unless they are disqualifying it finally becomes a matter for each individual electorate.

I clearly remembered Cam blogged to that effect about some young prospective candidate and I made a comment, but I cannot think of any other ‘too young’ prospective National candidate Cam could have been referring to.

    I agree that candidates should have experience outside politics and anyone under 30 is almost certainly going to lack that. However, I’m not sure how to enforce such a rule. A veto from head office is definitely not the right way to do it.

      ‘Enforcement’ would be difficult. That is why I consider ‘guidelines’ would be useful. At a selection meeting the meeting chair puts to questions to the budding candidates one prepared by the Leader and the other by the President and these are the same for each candidate. Perhaps further questions could be asked possibly tailored for each candidate. Unfortunately time is very limited at these meetings.
      Rob Muldoon had another method. After calling an election in 1984, the then party president Sue Wood (not to be confused with the TV one) sought a nomination for some seats (not sure if it was 1984 or 1987) – Rob got on the blower to electorate people and effectively killed her chances (he blamed the President and the General Secretary for failing to mount a successful election campaign).

  They still don’t appear to have gotten the facts right. JLR was reported as sectioned. The doctor called would have had to have seen him within the past 3 days then formed an opinion that the compulsory S.8 provisions could apply. That initiates action by the local designated Medical Officer to make an order and appoint an independent psychiatrist to examine JLR. Then the Police may pick him up to enforce the examination. Following that he can be confined or immediately released on the psychiatrist’s say so. His family are to informed too if he is held. The initial period is five days (or less) with extensions following review.

    I read WO from about 2012, I guess, up until a way into 2015 when I realised just how venomous both the posts and the comments were getting. I’d always refrained from commenting due to the somewhat destructive nature of the conversations, but didn’t mind reading what Cam had to say. He occasionally even made sense. But something changed, and it all went downhill. I don’t know what his numbers are like these days, but the site looks like a shadow of its former self.

  There are really two issues here:
  * They said they had documentation that they did not have and hence breached fair trading legislation.
  
  Since it is engineering documentation and not just a silly claim about toothpaste making your teeth whiter, I think they should have been done for serious fraud.
  
  * Is the mesh up to the job? They got pinged for incorrect (fabricated) documentation. That does not necessarily mean the mesh is not up to the job. If subsequent testing shows the mesh is Ok, then that should not be a worry.

  Reality is that it will make no significant difference to the strength or longevity of lightweight house structures, it is only a problem for the apparatchiks and their processes and paperwork. For much of 20th Century rebar was not used extensively in foundations and yet those buildings are still standing.
  
  A bigger issue I have heard about is that at least one construction company in the Chch rebuild was not putting rebar in the foundations as required – if necessary they would put it in for inspection prior to pour, then remove it for ‘reuse’ elsewhere (to save money) before the concrete was poured. I heard about one guy who noticed it being done on his house rebuild and didn’t call them out on it till finish of build when he was very generously convinced to stay quiet about it.

  I’ve heard that in Auckland some of the Chinese developers lay down the steel mesh, have it inspected and then remove it for the next job. I don’t how that will end up affecting the houses long term.

  These quattroporte are capable of 240kmph – not very many places you can drive in and around moresby at that kind of speed. Also need decent road surfaces because of clearance. Roads have been fixed up but as soon as everyone has left APEC they will revert back to cratered & potholed 4×4 tracks. I wonder how many Maserati workshops or trained technicians there are in Mosbi? None.
  Corrupt PNG politicians will ship them over to their Cairns & Brisbane properties after the doughnut fest apec concludes.

    You are spot on. My bet is within days of the conference ending, the cars will:
    1. Be broken or dented, & can’t be repaired – there is no way the PTB workshops will be able to fix a BMW let alone a Masserati; or
    2 as you wrote, heading to Aust.
    
    My memory of even the main roads of POM was that these cars will suffer going over the mounds that are the repaired craters.

  Given my experience of living and working in Port Moresby, this is wrong and as bad a decision as any corrupt decision out of Africa.
  
  I worked for the IT team that deployed the accounting system to manage PNG’s fleet of govt vehicles. All govt vehicles (including ministerial limousines) are the responsibility of the Plant & Transport Board (a division of the Dept of Works).
  
  The provision of expensive European limousines in Port Moresby is absurd for a number of reasons, not least the roads are not suitable for expensive European cars – after each wet season the roads are full of craters/pot holes that damage most cars; there are no dealerships or facilities to service/maintain expensive European cars – common cars are Toyotas, Nissans or Mazdas. My expectation the cars will be damaged or out of service within weeks of the conference ending.
  
  Then there is the probity of spending $millions on a conference junket in a country that:
  1. Suffers corrupt administration;
  2. Has limited resources generally (despite an abundance of mineral wealth) for spending on education & health of the population; and
  3. Would be better off spending money to improve the lives of the citizens of the country.

        Had a bicycle whiz pass us in a car the other day. We were doing the 50 limit. The bicycle was correctly laned and nothing seemed unusual until we realised it’s speed. Several of those close together on a cycle lane could be real hazard.

      Just because it’s capable of 30kph doesn’t mean you have to do 30 kph. And it has a speed gauge on it. 10 kph could be reasonable top speed which is the speed of a jog. Plus it has decent breaks unlike a skateboard. I can imagine on the lesser used roads like Anzac ave heading up the huge hill to Uni would be a good place to use one. I’ve seen ones in our suburban/rural area for people commuting to the train going sensible speeds on the almost empty footpaths. I would imagine it’s much easier to take on the train than a bike.

There’s a crazy push for a NZ hydrogen economy afoot that really looks like a massive face-plant into the trough.

There have been many articles. Why not eh? Hydrogen sounds so clean to the clueless journalists.

Hiringu Energy (run out of the front room of the owners’ cottage) has scored a $950k grant to explore options for hydrogen in Taranaki.

Of course our energy minister (PhD in History) is loving it, as are all the people who see this as an opportunity to score grants and loans.

This is odd. Why would anyone put hydrogen making plant in Taranaki?

There are basically two ways to make hydrogen:
1) Steam reaction with gas or other hydrocarbon feedstock. That still needs gas and releases CO2 etc. It is inefficient and you’d do better to just burn the gas. And of course we’re shutting down the gas so this is not an option.

2) Electrolysis: breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen. Again, pretty inefficient. Why would you put that in Taranaki so far from hydro generation and suffer the line losses? You’d put this in South Island.

The piece also contains numerous bullshit puff pieces. They claim hydrogen can be easily stored under pressure. Not so. Hydrogen atoms are the smallest atoms out there and can literally seep through steel walled containers. If a hydrogen system is not perfectly maintained, it is very likely to leak. Badly. Store your hydrogen-fueled car in the garage for the week end there’s a good chance of an explosive hydrogen/oxygen mix building up just waiting for a spark…

Pressuring and transporting hydrogen far is insane due to the various losses. Then running hydrogen through a fuel cell is even more lossy. All up, a terrible way to move energy around.

If we are going to, essentially, export electricity thern there are far safer and more effective ways to do so. For example, the aluminium out of Bluff is essentially exported electricity.

Alternatively let the NZ people have lower cost electricity and see what business can do.

    In the article I mention they did try to blame the Hindenberg on the doped fabric (made from filthy hydrocarbons) and not the hydrogen.
    
    While you could make the case that the doped fabric started the fire, it did not cause the fireball that caused almost all the damage. That was hydrogen all the way.

  Taranaki could also be subsidised to build dirigibles. That way they could pump their hydrogen making process at source. Hydrogen filled dirigibles could then transport the hydrogen around the country to those that need it.

  The only justifications for hydrogen use are for long term storage or long distance transport at vast scale (where pumped storage is not available), where the <40% energy out/energy in efficiency is not as important. Or (in far future) for aviation and ship fuels. Hydrogen for road transport and domestic use are just insanely dangerous due to hydrogen's extreme reactivity, high tendency to leak, and low density requiring super high pressures.

It does seem slightly unclear now as what status Jami Lee Ross has in Parliament.

Ross is not a National MP because caucus unanimously expelled him, while Ross himself has reportedly resigned, and Speaker Mallard, notified by National’s senior whip under a Standing Order, that Ross is no longer National, has under another Standing Order declared Ross as an Independent for Parliamentary purposes.

But despite National’s reluctance to touch Winston’s waka-jumping bill, now law, it does state a position that may be “automatic”.
This states 55A (3) “a member of Parliament ceases to be a parliamentary member of the political party for which the member of Parliament was elected only if” … the member gives the Speaker certain documentation, or the parliamentary leader of the particular political party gives the Speaker certain documentation.

Does a Standing Order fullfil the requirements of the new Electoral (Integrity) Amendment Bill, or not?

Those electric lime scooters are fast. I was cycling around Tamaki Drive (into a headwind) yesterday, and a group of scooters on the sidewalk on the other side of the road were keeping up (doing about 25 km/h).
None of the riders were wearing crash helmets or gloves (your palms will take a beating in a crash). The scooter front wheels must only be about 22 cm or so in diameter, and will be deflected by the smallest of bumps or transitions.
The potential for injury is high. These things really move quickly.

    The cycle path is okay if you want to go slower than 20 km/h. The path is really bumpy where it passes by the pohutukawas (the roots have lifted the pavement). On the weekends, the path is full of tourists (who don’t understand the meaning of the bicycle symbol).

        Indians and Chinese seem to be the least aware of their surroundings. (Maybe they are still jet-lagged or are trying to cram too much into too short a vacation schedule.)
        They seem preoccupied with chatting to their group members, and don’t look around them for other members of the public. Or else they are overly focused on taking that special photo of Rangitoto (as you do) and are oblivious to cyclists and other path users.

  Yup those small wheels provide almost none of the gyroscopic stability that bike wheels do. Mix that in with high speeds and inexperienced riders and you’re looking at a mess.

The only problem (for him) was that Immigration NZ required evidence that the relationship was genuine. He couldn’t provide evidence of anything other than one or two trips to Russia.

While he denied groping the actress, he admitted he may have “accidentally” touched her breast. The actress was later named as Eryn Jean Norvill, who The Daily Telegraph reported lodged a complaint with the Sydney Theatre Company over his “inappropriate behaviour”.

Ms Norvill is expected to give evidence in the 67-year-old’s defamation trial against the newspaper.

The paper’s barrister Tom Blackburn SC asked Mr Rush if he told Ms Norvill “you’re looking very scrumptious today” during rehearsals in late 2015.
“I don’t recall saying that but I may have said that,” Mr Rush told the Federal Court. “I was always in a very chirpy mood.”

Ms Norvill played Cordelia — daughter of Mr Rush’s character King Lear whose “lifeless” body he carried on stage before caressing her in grief.
Mr Rush denied deliberately tracing his fingers across Ms Norvill’s breast, saying he had wanted to feel the silhouette of her character’s lifeless torso, adding it was “the interior of my palms wanting to feel the loss of her soul”.

“Did a thumb accidentally touch the lower part of her chest? Possibly. I wasn’t monitoring this with detachment,” Mr Rush said.

      We did Opononi, Waitangi, Paihia, Kerikeri, and lots of beaches etc.
      
      Cruised around the Waimate Mission Station and church etc one drizzly morning – had the place to ourselves, not one other visitor at the place. Magic.
      
      Poked around Rawene one glorious morning and had a great breakfast overlooking the harbour at the Boatshed Cafe. Stunning.
      
      Joked to the kids that I can see myself parked up around there in my retirement – rural block, greenhouses, a shooting range, some deer fencing etc etc.

        I am very happy to report that on the day we went to Waitangi it was about 4pm and we were, again, the only people in both the Treaty House and Meeting House. I got yarning with the Maori bloke going around shutting the windows and doors in the Treaty House at closing time and made a few favourable comments to him about how everything is so well looked after. He couldn’t have been more friendly and accommodating in response. Saw him later in a pub in Paihia and gave each other a friendly eyebrow raise.
