        They can’t even give the paper away.
        
        We had a free five week subscription as a part of our AA membership which went largely unread. The Herald followed that up with an offer of $7 a week for all seven papers which we declined due to lack of family interest. They repeated the $7 offer three weeks ago with the added incentive of a $100 Farmers gift card which we again declined. Next move?
        
        The Herald could try shifting a large chunk of its obviously sizeable marketing budget into hiring some decent experienced journalists and desist from cutting and pasting articles from offshore sources that have no relevance to NZ.

      Yes I’ve done similar. My great great grandmother had 12 kids. Died giving birth to number 12. And of those 12 kids the one born FIRST outlived all the others. Died in 2000 aged 100.

      …my great grandmother had fourteen children…..eleven surviving til very old…..My Nana was the eldest….when I was born I had two great grandmothers….I was very close with my Nana…..if I had behaved like Jamie Leak Toss….she would have been gutted and probably would have given me a slap…..I feel for the collateral damage that Toss has caused and has never given a toss about….talk about self-entitlitis…

  These ‘puns’ injected into the miserable presentations -paraded out as ‘reporting’ are tiresome, even more so when delivered with the skill of a seven year old with the pause at the beginning of the ‘clever’ word, the word then pronounced slowly and in an enlongated fashion to be completed with a kiwi typical upward lilt suggesting a question with a little grin and the Cambell trick of dropping the chin and looking at you through the top of ones eyes.

  The Opposition leader’s mother was also upset her son was vilified as a racist.
  
  The same recording revealed Bridges saying “Two Chinese would be more valuable than two Indians”.
  
  To the best of my recollection, it was Jami-Lee Ross who made that particular comment, and not Bridges. But since when has the Herald worried about accuracy?

  Heard of another instance of this sort of thing (no names as the mother told me directly).
  The son of a well known Kiwi family made the headlines in UK. It was nothing wrong or objectionable, just slightly outrageous.
  The Times phoned mum, this being when international phone calls were rather expensive. Mum thought it was a hoax and gave some flippant answers to the caller’s questions. A few days later the son phoned mum and said ‘what have you been telling the Times?’

  It will most probably have some negative effect. However it is a Jami versus all the other National MP’s, so it is not as if there are pro-Jami and anti-Jami warring factions. Apart from having to deal with it, it seems to be business as usual in the National caucus. Chris Bishop for example is still posting to Facebook about all his usual electorate activities. It would be crazy to have a leadership spill right at this moment although this cannot be ruled out later.
  Jacinda has been low-key on this – ‘there but for the grace of God go I’. While Labour/ Winston has been gifted a wonderful opportunity, the issue is whether they will use it effectively or wisely. Or whether Labour MP’s and Ministers think National is doomed and let their guard down.
  If the National caucus stays unified, this would undo most of the damage inflicted by Jami.
  There was a leadership spill in National just over a year out from the 1975 election and Rob Muldoon became National’s leader. The whole caucus got right behind Rob and was united and this unity was an important factor in National winning the 1975 election.
  Perhaps National MP’s should let things settle down for a few months then consider whether there should be a leadership contest, then re-unify so a new leader if any has a clear run for 2020.

      I assume, and DF will know to what extent, that Indian and Chinese votes are essential for this stubborn polling above 40%.
      They are races with no comprehension of welfare, and there are huge numbers in New Zealand.
      The Indian vote is now heading to other parties, this is a disaster for National, as the comment will never be spun away. Simon Bridges erred in just one respect, he got caught. No one can survive being secretly recorded and published, maybe only Jesus.
      Everyone I speak to believed that Jamie Lee Ross did something illegal, like that cup of coffee with John Key that was accidentally recorded, and the police got involved.

Talking about cash-for-candidates, does anyone believe the donation to Clayton Mitchell by the head honcho of Hospitality NZ was just money for a mate?

Mitchell is behind a “values” bill that includes a commitment not to campaign against the legality of alcohol.

For those that don’t watch Parliament TV, and who could blame you, Mr Mitchell is the one who sits behind Mr Peters and laughs like a very embarrassing drain every time his boss opens his mouth.

  HdPA didn’t bat an eyelid when JLR name dropped the MP he had an affair with. Perhaps that is one of the benefits of being married to Soper, you get to hear all the Goss but keep mum about it. Also it’s probably the reason why Soper and HdPA look as though they have been up all night and slept in their clothes, all that juicy scandal is hard to process, hehe.
  Well look on the brightside, the press gallery can now write their tell all memoirs without fear of retribution, that is providing Jamie leaves something for them.
  The downside for the press gallery is now the loss of a valued deepthroat insider, where to now.
  Seriously though, Simon will be the sacrificial lamb as HdPA muses, certainly his career has been knocked sideways, especially if Jamie continues to roll out the thunderbolts. It may mean Jamie wins but in the brutal world of politics that may well be the price the Nats will pay to bring an end to the damaging revelations. It needs to be noted, that it was Ross who lifted the bedsheets, not Leopard Skins. That tape with Bridges, where he discussed natural justice, “not 4 women Jamie, it’d be 15”.

The 4 women came fwd because Ross said what he did (that he’d never harassed anyone and that he’d only ever treated womem [Ahem..his wife] with utmost respect. They’d been talking to media for a year; and others for longer.

Ross is not the victm here.

    I don’t know about iMP stephie, but I couldn’t disagree more with Garner. He showed his true colours this week in two interviews.
    
    On Monday he confronted Simon Bridges with a number of allegations. He bullied and hectored Bridges, who remained calm but frustrated that Garner would not let him finish a single answer.
    
    The next morning he interviewed the PM, and the contrast could not have been more extreme. Garner was polite, asked “soft” questions, engaged in banter with the PM, and didn’t interrupt at all. The roaring lion of the previous day had been replaced by a newborn lamb.

  Quite so John. It disgusts me that some people here are trying to portray Ross as some sort of paragon of virtue, and the women he harrassed as the aggressors.
  
  Ross’ pattern of behaviour has been cunning and manipulative. He has essentially stalked women, lavished them with compliments etc to win their trust, and once that has been accomplished, he has used them for his own purposes, be they sexual, political or just his need to be in control.
  
  Many years ago I did a Stopping Violence course, to which I self-referred, because I was worried about my tendency to get angry over insignificant things. There I learned about the Power and Control Wheel, and how that affects the dynamics of a relationship. It was a very valuable learning experience, and has helped me cope ever since.
  
  It’s clear that Ross has used the power of his position as an MP to attempt to control people with whom he had both intimate and employment relationships. I can only imagine the put-downs he will have used, and the psychological damage he will have inflicted. He alone is responsible for his present predicament.

I heard on the radio news that 800 restaurants and pubs in Auckland are having to agree to have their outside areas smoke-free if they want to renew their outdoor dining licenses.

Smoking outside hundreds of cafes, restaurants and bars is being snubbed out in Auckland.

Auckland Council is making more than 800 restaurants, cafes and bars with outdoor dining smokefree as part of new licensing rules.

  On the one hand, they want to ban smoking in outdoor areas – they say it’s for the good health and well-being of the public at large. They say, we don’t want to encourage this behavior.
  
  And on the other hand you have the Greens pushing to legalize, well, smoking – of cannabis. And instead of protecting the health of the concert-going public this summer against harmfully dangerous drugs by doing all they can to ban them, they are encouraging their use by promoting drug testing labs at summer concerts so people can take them safely??? It is hypocritical to encourage and promote one bad behavior while trying to ban another.

We have the politicians we deserve. Decades of apathy and a certain amount of inward focus (each of us focused on our family, job, business and less focused on community) has lead to a point where no one of those idiots from any party deserves respect.

The education system has ruined us.
Not the socialism and Marxist agenda’s, just the simple dumbing down of people, my generation (mid forty) and below have no ability to think critically and for themselves, the boomers are fuck all better.

Click bait journalism is the canary in the mine, when actual reporting died our democracy began to follow.

Identity politics will actually be what saves us, because as the pendulum swings to the point (and I think it is there) the average kiwi might just wake from there slumber and revolt, causing the pendulum to swing back to a more rational point of view.

That, or we need a world war….

And it’s probably the reason why Labour have been so quiet. We need a Royal Commission into foreign “donations” including the use of locally registered front organizations. There is plenty of peer reviewed research such as Prof Brady’s paper “Magic Weapons” to indicate we have a serious problem here that is eroding our democracy and diminishing New Zealand’s international standing. The Five Eyes arrangement, so important for our security, is now jokingly referred to as “Four Eyes and a Wink” because of concerns material shared with New Zealand may be ending up in Beijing. Of course isolating New Zealand from its friends would be a major win for Beijing and take us further into their orbit.

It does not just mean “liberals are gullible fools,” it means that there are people who have no voice inside their head narrating their lives – what we’ve been calling an “inner voice” or “internal monologue.” They are actual soulless fleshbags who only respond to the environment and are totally incapable of thought…….

I have personally met people who were clearly not very intelligent who you can share ideas with and they will think about them and roll them around in their heads – clearly using an inner voice to process the ideas within themselves. Maybe the processing is slow, but it is happening.

I have also met people who clearly had high intelligence, could reference intellectual concepts and who had demonstrated competence in whichever field, but who broke down in an emotional rage if I presented an idea that is against the NPC programming.

I see on Stuff that there is an emotive article about rapes at the Otago and Victoria uni hostels. I assume that the outrage is well-founded and that there is genuine and wrenching episodes happening. I went to University in the 1970s. In those days the hostels were strictly segregated and if a male was found in a females’ hostel it meant expulsion. I am sure that, were that policy re-introduced the instances of sexual assaults may well reduce. In my day there were those, both male and female who rose to the challenge of entering hostels which were the reserves of the other gender but there were no occasions where a floor in a hostel was a mixture of 12 males and 4 females and open to alcohol consumption etc.. Climbing a fire-escape to meet up with a sex partner was not unheard of and added to the thrills. I once spent a week secreted in a Nurses’ Home with my girlfriend of the time. It was great, particularly given it was mid-winter but the place had central heating. My friend brought me food and stood watch while I sneaked into the showers etc.. Had I been found there she’d have been down the road. Oh to be young again!

  I think none of us had much regard for the Hostel wardens. At Massey in the 70s most of the female hostels were across the highway, off the main campus grounds where the males were housed.
  2 of my High-school classmates had paired up in the 7th form but had decided to go to separate Unis…it wasn’t long before they were wanting to get together..
  So the female would come up from Wellington in the weekend and camp out in my (shared) room and spend the day over at one of the male hostels with her partner. She had to sneak back into Monroe house after 10pm hoping that the warden wasn’t doing a late weekend prowl, and then get up before 6:30am to be first in the showers.
  
  One day a senior political newspaper reporter might like to tell the tale of his parents’ escapades.

How much of a problem does Speaker Mallard now have in a “rogue” member
• who has compromised Parliamentary procedures (leaks and recordings),
• threatened serious self-harm through self-confessed mental ill-health,
• admitted moral indiscretions and is accused of inappropriate sexual and bullying behaviour, and
• now claims his function to be an opposition to the party he was elected to represent, by “vowing to stay in Parliament and dish the dirt from under the political bed-sheets”?

Given Ross’s declared intention and because defamation and other laws will likely confine Ross’s accusations and proposed revelations to be only made under the protection of Parliament, it would seem Mallard, as Speaker and in charge of that venue, will be the person who controls the tone and relevance of what Ross attempts to put forward.

With all this crap going down with Bridges, JLR etc, maybe time to change our political system.

One I am really beginning to like is the sortition system.

Sortition is the use of random selection to populate assemblies or fill political positions. An assembly that uses sortition would be composed of people just like you and me: it would be a representative random sample of people, making decisions in an informed, fair and deliberative setting.

I listened to a podcast about it the other day (hacking the law tedtalk), and it sounds really intriguing once you get past the ‘you must be crazy’ factor.

  I agree that democracy would benefit from change. I’d like to see a system that isn’t based on 17th geo-constrained century paradigm, specifically one that:
  
  1. Does away with electorate and list seats
  
  2. Has parties choose and publish a list of biographies for 2n candidates, where n is the number of seats in parliament.
  
  3. Give me, a registered voter, online access to all these biographies, allowing me to favourite candidates for my votes, compare background/experience etc. In other words, just like I do with choosing food, household purchases, travel, experiences, charities, and everything else in life.
  
  4. On election day, allows me to vote for up to 5 people – not constrained by geography or party.
  
  5. The election results would be a ranked list of our most preferred leaders.
  
  6. The party with the most preferred candidates would form the government.

    But at the ballot box you would be confronted with a list of 1,000 choices!
    Say 100 seats, 10 parties so 2n = 200×10 parties = 1,000!
    Similar to some of the ballot papers in Afghanisatan this election.

    The Police commit no one. A doctor has to give an opinion and the Medical authorities act to require compulsory examination. The Police assist with enforcement if needed. The initial period is for 5 days but the review team may make orders and the Court may review these being renewed at a later date.
