Did Mandela and the ANC actually prolong apartheid?

Having recently gone through some of the timelines and history, I must conclude that yes, Mandela actually chose to keep apartheid going for approximately two years longer than it should have.

“Peak apartheid” was reached somewhere in the early 1970s, depending on region etc. By the late 1970s the erosion of apartheid had begun. The Bantutans (separate “countries” carved off for different tribes) had been formed and were nominally independent. That was a last ditch effort to make apartheid work.

In the early1980s apartheid was getting very porous. Non-whites were living in whites-only ares in many cities. Non-whites were working in many professional positions where you would previously only have seen whites. The deconstruction of apartheid had begun and the problem had changed from preserving apartheid to how to bring about an orderly transition. In 1983 the tri-cameral parliament was created as a stepping stone, giving Coloured and Indian people the vote (but not Blacks).

Meanwhile, Mandela was getting older. Mandela was clearly a symbolic figure and was important to the transition process. His health was in question and it was clear there would be problems if he was to die in prison. In 1982 he was moved off Robben Island to Pollsmoor prison where negotiations were started with him. In 1988 he was moved to a low security prison in the winelands where he had his own house and completed his law degree etc.

For many years he was given the option to disavow violence and be released But no, he wanted to keep violence on the table. He was also given opportunities to “escape” but chose not to take them.

So why keep it all going like a scrum-half keeping the ball in the scrum?

As apartheid was being dismantled, the ANC was cranking up their operations to bring more arms and ammunition into South Africa. There was clearly no military need for these, since the apartheid they were supposedly fighting was already winding down. Operation Vula, the biggest of these, brought in almost as much equipment as the 20 previous years.

Indeed, if they had put down their weapons and gone for peaceful negotiations apartheid would have likely been done and dusted with the first fully democratic elections held in 1990 rather than 1994. However, ANC would not have been in as strong a position since there were other powerful groups too.

IMHO, the purpose for Mandela’s stalling tactics was to give the ANC more time bring in more weapons for their real power struggle – not with the whites, but with other black people. They wanted to be the dominant force before the end of apartheid. Those weapons were very seldom used to fight the government, but were often used to fight other blacks.

There is no other rational reason for poaring weapons into a situation which is on the path to peace.

This had many terrible outcomes, including:
1) The massive violence, necklacing, etc that killed tens of thousands of black people.
2) An extension of apartheid by a few years.
3) Leaving a terrible legacy which is still haunting South Africa today.

Thank you, for at last confirming what has been for me a long-held hypothesis, that things were delayed for the purposes of ‘utu’ (Revenge’) by the ANC against those who would not acknowledge its ‘superiority’. Contrary to what some in the West would like to believe, the Mandala legacy has not been all sweetness and light!

  We have no way of knowing that really. Or, it might have taken until 1996 or 2000.
  For those struggling against apartheid at the time, cracks in the system would, I imagine, seem a sign of success for what they were doing – a signal to keep up or increase their efforts rather than they should stop. That would, I think, be the normal response unless you were getting very specific government messages about a major impending change.
  With hindsight, you may be right (I genuinely don’t know), but I’m not sure that it would seem that clear at the time.

    Sure we never fully know how things could have played out and there were certainly many people involved in Operation Vula who thought they were fighting apartheid rather than help establish ANC’s power base.
    
    I would agree with you if the ANC attacks were predominantly directed at the white regime, but the people who were feeling the brunt of the ANC attacks (and the pointy end of the weaponry being brought in by the ANC) were primarily other blacks.
    
    That does not really support the idea that the weapons were being brought in to fight apartheid.
    
    This black-on-black unrest also fanned “swart gevaar” (the fear of blacks by whites) which reduced the willingness of many whites to make concessions. That also delayed negotiations.

    Just to add one more point to that…
    
    In almost every transition to democracy in Africa there has been a huge black-on-black power war (or in many cases even more than one): Kenya (Mau mau vs the others), Uganda (Idi Amin etc), Congo, Angola (three-way: one Nationalist and two different commie teams), Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Sudan, …
    
    Of course the ANC would have looked at history and wanted to be sufficiently tooled up for the post-apartheid conflict. IMHO: that was the real purpose of Operation Vula – not actually fighting the white regime.
    
    That South Africa did not have the post-transition civil war of the extent that was experienced elsewhere perhaps has some good reasons, but that’s not for today.

    It won’t be any different to other commie nationalisation efforts, except that modern agriculture is far more dependent on banks than it was in the old days.
    
    While banks can’t really fix what is damaged, they can tighten up their lending to prevent losing even more.
    
    Even if land appropriation does not go ahead, the uncertainty is going to kill investment. Who would buy a farm? Invest in a new central pivot/machinery? What bank would lend anyway?
    
    Maintenance will slide. Productivity will go down. People will starve.

  Agree, but one must also consider the larger Geopolitical landscape. The ANC were communist aligned. SA had Nukes. The Cape Shipping route for oil was still considered strategically vital to western interests. The USA relied on South African satellite tracking stations. Although officially denied, there was co-operation between NATO and the South African government. And then the Cold War sort of ended… and a staunchly prowest regime was not as vital anylonger to western interests. As for the Nukes, 6 were sent to the USA, and 3 were sent to England. Those three “Got Lost” and probably landed up in Pakistan or North Korea. (Google “Khan and the South African nuclear connection”..)

  Selling for about $640,000 from memory. Most banks are required by the LVRs to look for 20% equity by any purchaser. That means approx. $128000 to get a loan of about $512,000 …… may be interest only for max of 4 years at about 4.99% …. and then a wait for inflation to increase the value and lift then off the floor. But the loan will still be a massive anchor even for a two income family. Of course there will be various ways of putting the deposit together. But inevitably the anchor will remain. And whart if the dire economic predictions made by Peters and Ardern turn out to be true? What will the floating or fixed term interest rates be ??? Now that is “top of my head stuff,” not even an envelope. But it seems symptomatic of the absurd Auckland house market and the media Ardern-Twyford hyped “solution”. Oh dear..

        That’s true. A one percentage point rise in interest rates from 5.79% to 6.79% is equivalent to a 17.3% increase (6.79 / 5.79 = 1.173).
        
        If interest rates grow from 2% to 4%, then that is a doubling of rates.

  I have sympathy for the woman and her family. I think the better solution is for the government to loan the costs needed to her family rather than either making a gift to them of the costs or declining any assistance. The family could readily begin repayment of the costs on their successful return to NZ.

      Well played Mr Bridges. Yes, we can all say that Ms Hartley should have had more comprehensive travel insurance, but how many of us actually read the fine print of the policies we buy online.
      
      Issues of insurance apart, Bridges has facilitated the woman’s return to New Zealand thanks to some anonymous benefactors. It was a hoot to read the Newshub Twitter feed earlier this morning at all the bitter, twisted lefties lambasting him for politicising this woman’s plight.
      
      What tosh! Politicising the situation would have been putting on his concern face, saying the right things, but doing nothing. Instead Bridges has been the conduit between willing donors and a distressed family, and all we can hope now is that Ms Hartley makes a full recovery in a New Zealand hospital.

  She had travel insurance, but the insurer declined to pay out. I am extremely concerned with the way the product is sold. Flight Centre agent for example will ask you a series of health questions from her screen and enter the answers. You could accidentally give wrong or incomplete answers and hence end up with a useless policy. They get away with it since the insurance industry successfully resisted being covered by usual consumer law provisions.
  I wonder what the full circumstances surrounding this woman’s travel insurance were.

    If you buy insurance then you should read the policy first and if unsure with any clause contact the Insurer with your query.

This is how those sons of Satan will push the final taboo….

‘Scientific papers’ and domain ‘experts’ will tentatively emerge suggesting paedophilia might be ‘more complex’ than had heretofore been believed.

We’ll learn of ‘research’ indicating that some amorous adult/child relationships can be ‘nurturing’ for both parties. Appeals for ‘understanding’ will follow, reinforced with a new lexicon of euphemisms such as inter-generational love and minor-attracted persons etc. New (and mysteriously well-funded) organisations such as Parents And Friends of Minor-Attracted Persons will emerge.

They’ll reassure us that their friend or son is perfectly normal in all other ways, wouldn’t hurt a fly but is leading a lonely and marginalised life because of, yes, paedophobia. Society hates him just because he wants to express his love in his own way. You’ll hear the word ‘love’ deployed endlessly, just as it was with the homos.

Openness to discussing paedophilia will be promoted as sophisticated, progressive. And tolerant. Love should never be illegal, especially for the lonely isolated and vulnerable…..those seeking a loving partnership.

  The trouble is once you dispense with the Christian morals that underpinned our Western civilisation you are left with very little moral guidance as to what is right or wrong? So if homosexuality is now okay, what else is now okay?

If I heard Pike River Recovery boss Dave Gawn right this morning, the massive effort to get back into the mine is only into the drift, the long incline up to the mine proper. This, apparently, is to recover ant forensic evidence.
Gawn says is it ”more likely” bodies are beyond a rockfall further up the drift. Getting into that area – the area where the bodies are likely to be – has not really been planned, at least at this stage.
The public perception, I think, is that this is a body recovery exercise.
It appears not, unless I misheard.

      And has anyone actually taken heed of the real environmental impact of the different types of bags ? The “single use” bags are more environmentally friendly by quite some margin, as well as more hygienic.
      
      What is it with all this fuck-witted virtue signalling that actually leads to worse environmental outcomes but is somehow dressed up as virtue ? Is it some sort of exercise in how far you can warp a societies sense of propriety and common sense so in the future bigger and more damaging changes can be accepted ? That is, used in the same way that propaganda in communist societies is not so much to get people to believe in preposterous claims, but to make them complicit in so may little lies so they lose their sense of honesty and thus make it easier to implement the corrupt and exploitative society that is the end aim of those who control the country ?

  Earlier this year the supermarket chains hear people talk about single use plastic bags – something about the environment at al.
  
  So, both chains announce come the new year “no more single use plastic bags.”
  
  Cinders comes back from maternity leave, and during yet another PR relaunch of the CoL during one her post cabinet news conferences she announces
  
  “The government will begin a conversation looking at the total banning of single use plastic bags.”
  
  Within a week, both major supermarket groups announce that they will stop supplying shoppers with single use plastic bags on 29/08/18.
  
  Instead, shoppers will buy slightly heavier duty plastic bags at $0.15 a bag.
  
  Call me cynical, but this was a move by the supermarkets (encouraged by the witless Cindy) to enhance their bottom lines.
  
  Nothing to do with the environment.
  
  As Mrs HK has found, now when you go into the supermarket, you HAVE TO HAVE a bag with you, else the supermarket will helpfully extract $0.15 per bag from your picket.

      Besides, if you live North of the Bridge, the biggest bunch of hypocrites have to be Auckland Council. If you do not have a rubbish wheelie bin, through the said supermarkets and DIY stores, you are obliged to buy a rubbish sack. These rubbish sacks have a one week life for the household rubbish, ate then left at the kerbside, are collected by the rubbish contractors, to end up in – landfill. These sacks that cost between $2.25 and $2.50 are the ultimate single use plastic bags.

Today Duncan is being somewhat disingenuous Duncan. He writes a pretty sparse piece ostensibly highly critical of the government. But his real attitude is expressed early. First that business concerns are ‘whines and endless wish lists’ and second Labour just needs to “remind everyone in business of the real economic stats that show things are largely tracking OK”. In other words business confidence is disingenuous, and delinked from fundamentals.

No. That’s wrong. The confidence tracks fundamentals. The fundamentals are bad. Things are not largely tracking okay because tracking includes forward projections. Businesses can’t live day by day. Expressing concerns about entire industries being arbitrarily excised and chaotic secret working groups all building like a wave to eventually crash down isn’t ‘whining and wish lists’.

The problem isn’t Curran and Whatiri. It’s the Prime Minister and the other Prime Ministers, Winston and Helen. Who knows what is going to happen next?

Duncan needs to apologise to Steven Joyce for getting it wrong on the hole, and not dismiss business as ‘whines ans wish lists’. But he can blame the economists for misleading him on the hole.

  Recently had the pleasure of visiting Peter Jackson’s WWI Centennial display in the old Wellington museum before it is due to close in December, as Massey university want their building back. Hubby and I recommend a paid tour of this treasure before it is demolished.
  
  The WWI memorabilia and some of the amazing lifelike accompanying Weta Workshop displays will disappear into dusty storage. Sadly much of the fabulous and realistic infrastructure, the French cobbled streets and villages, etc will disappear during the demolition, so as to return the building in readiness for its handover to Massey.
  
  The old museum is situated above the Wellington Cenotaph and ‘the grave of the unknown soldier’. The historic, and majestic building should be owned by the people of NZ or unfortunately, we will lose this wonderful and historical display. It will be so very unfortunate for NZ to lose this fabulous display of history.

    Some of you might recall that the old museum was closed, passed to the Tenths as part of a treaty settlement, and then leased to Massey. The First World War display was only ever propsed as a fice year centennial project. Massey has proposed extending the lease, but wants a massive lump of cash to reonvate the building. The Ministry for Culture and Heritage has said no; so Peter Jackson will need to find another storage site, as the taxpayers and ratepayers can’t fund all of his projects. Great as the museum show has been, the price to keep it there was extoirtionate – probably on the basis that Massey thought the government would roll over.

So, the country needs another 300 junior doctors to fill the gap after the last strike gave them less hours because of some sort of safety concern. And it’s only going to cost us $35 million.

It follows a warning from a new rebel junior doctors’ union last week that the rosters, introduced from February 2017 under a new employment deal between district health boards and doctors’ union the Resident Doctors’ Association, are wrecking surgical training and potentially unsafe for patients.

The new rosters, followed bitter pay talks, including two strikes, in 2016 and 2017 between the Resident Doctors’ Association and DHBs. The deal reached as a result, in Schedule 10 of the multi-employer collective agreement (MECA), ended the ability for junior doctors to be rostered on for 12 consecutive days or up to seven consecutive nights, replacing it with a maximum of 10 consecutive days and four consecutive nights.

The new union, Specialty Trainees of New Zealand, or SToNZ, told RNZ last week the change has seriously limited their ability to train, because surgical training opportunities occur during the week, when they are not permitted to work if they have worked a weekend shift.

SToNZ chair Heath Lash also estimated the rosters had led to vacancies of between 200 and 300 junior doctors, also known as Resident Medical Officers, or RMOs.

There’s been a report done on the issue, and guess what it says on the very last page in the summary?

These changes are arising as an unintended consequence of an industrial relations negotiation rather than as a planned, professionally led process aimed at determining the best future roles of clinicians in our hospital services.

Its a password manager.

I have one long ass password (a sentence no one would ever guess), once logged in, it stores all your passwords and creates new ones for you as needed.

eg say i needed a new password for kiwiblog. I pick 21 characters long. it spits out something like this – Hr13@uN!w9o1GD6C$Wx3x

Try guessing that fucker!

the beauty is you never have to remember. It auto fills everything, including apps on your phone.

In that, he seems to typify the most pusilanimous of the republicans – calling Trump out on (some of) his egregious and offensive nonsense, but not quite prepared to do anything about it. In case you missed it, there is a new film about Neil Armstrong landing on the Moon about to be released. The film makers, however, have decided not to include a scene of the American flag being planted on the Moon – that would be too pro-American or something.

Canadian Ryan Gosling who plays Armstrong in the film said, “So I don’t think that Neil viewed himself as an American hero. From my interviews with his family and people that knew him, it was quite the opposite. And we wanted the film to reflect Neil.” Reaction on twitter was swift –

  Chuck Yeager had Armstrong pegged as a bit of a twat as a young aviator. From memory Armstrong unnecessarily landed a big plane on a damp playa and got it bogged/stuck until it dried sufficiently to be dug out and recovered.

    Loved the story about the Air Force commander who checked inventory of aircraft by having them paraded past him and checked the serial numbers. Yeager had the serial numbers of Aircraft that had been shot down painted on. Must have messed things up for years afterwards.

    To be honest, Gosling’s statement is disingenuous and misleading anyway. It isn’t about Armstrong seeing himself as a hero. It is about Armstrong and company’s pride in America; their love of country and patriotism. If you think that didn’t play a significant part in how they thought of the space race then you’re blind. The tweets by Yeager and Aldrin prove it.
    
    The Left don’t like the idea of America being great. Witness the statement by Democrat New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo two weeks ago that “America was never that great”. But America has been successful. And their thinking is that if one country has been more successful than another then there must have been some unfairness or inequality involved. Well, tough bikkies. International criminals, often in China, are making artificial “honey” and it’s showing up in Australia. A test there of 28 sample imported honeys has shown 12 were not pure honey.

Asian honey, banned from Europe, has long been causing problems in the United States. The EU banned honey from India after finding samples had been contaminated by lead and banned animal medicines. The authorities found some of the honey was entirely artificial.

America has encountered big problems with “honey laundering”. This is honey shipped from China to trusted traditional suppliers to the US, such as Mexico, and sent to America as being from that country.

Crooks typically bulk up natural honey with cheap ingredients such as rice syrup and beet syrup and other substances that aren’t detected by official honey tests.

Meanwhile, in NZ’s pure-honey industry, two Chinese companies are trying to buy New Zealand maker Manuka Health for about $300 million. With adulteration problems in their home industry, Chinese consumers are keen for NZ and other foreign honeys.

If the Chinese get into the NZ industry, this adds to competition for NZ exporters. They already face competition from the “daigou” trade: NZ resident Chinese buying our honey in supermarkets and sending it to China.

    Inandout / rangitoto: Sadly, paramedic abuse has been known to happen in NZ, but not necessarily from the expecte,d quarters. Let ne explain. Many years ago I was assisting a paramedic to revive an ederly local metho who had fallen over and was bleedng profusely from a head wound sustained after hitting the ashphalt. This at 0200 on an Auckland summer morning. I had found him and from what little he said, gathered he had been beaten up. (He hadn’t). I called both St Johns and the local Police. St. Johns arrived first although only with one staff member ( they were short staffed), and soon a very capable young PI paramedic was going about his tasks. The patient was semi-conscious and in a metythlated-spirits induced state. Blood everywhere. So far, so good. Enter Plod! A red, unmarked HQ Holden drove up and six men in light grey suits got out. The first one in the front passenger seat, comes bounding out and walks over to us, and starts demanding, ‘Ok, we’re the Poice, What’s going on here, who are you etc etc’. Really cocky, over the top, boorush almost, but hey, he was THE MAN!, HOWEVER while doing all this he also takes out a REVOLVER from inside his hacket and, bold as brass, and fully of authority, walks up to the paramedic down on his knees alongside his patient, and points it close to the head of the Paramedic, then does the same to me!!!!! What the hell?…. He carried on waving the pistol around and evidently thought he was being soooooo cool. His mates just stood nearby and also seemed to think that what he was doing was a great joke. The paramedic just looked up, and got on with his job, I was ticked off, and very, very scared, since this was the sort of nightmare that happened in the US , not in little old NZ, and although I did give fleeting thought to shoving him away, he had mates and, cops being cops, it would be all thieves together, so no chance. One against six seemed unreasonable odds. I was also on duty, so it woukd probably not have looked too good for my record to be accused of fighting the Police on Company time. The cop and his mates eventually got bored, decided an unconscious vagrant wasn’t much fun and after taking the necessay details, they all went back to the car, and drove off in a cloud of dust, stones and loud noises from the vehicle’s overstressed suspension. No doubt they had had a great time. The paramedic also finished, the victim (by this time conscious again), was persuaded to climb into the ambulance, and after it drove off, silence returned to my workplace. It had been an interesting 45 or so minutes. And my point? That although the ‘Usual suspects’ are the cause of incidents such as you have detailed, sometimes they can equally be caused by those whom society like to believe are their guardians , in this instance our supposedly ‘upright’ police force. And if anyone wonders, there was at the time no such thing as the Police Complaints Authority, so the cop I’ve mentioned was free to do as he pleased with no consequences. I never saw the paramedic or police again, but did see the victim a few days later. He had absolutely no recollection of the incident; such is the effect of methylated spirits on the brain.

What is going on with the Pike River mine shenanigans?

The head of the “agency” set up to run it is quoted on Radio NZ today as saying there is no plan to re-enter the mine. The plan is only to explore the 2.3 km entry tunnel. So far, people have been only 300 metres into it.

The agency chief warns that no bodies may be found in the entry tunnel, and says the exploration is for “forensic examinations”.

The report ends with: ” … it is possible the re-entry could cost more than the $23 million originally budgeted.”

Did I just dream this. Airforce one has left for Nauru with Peters and media.

You ask where is her Highness.. well you see the squirrel has not had her shots owing to her parents having this thing about vaccines. That prevents her going to the island.

Secondly as the Bub is on the breast Ardern is unable to leave her for more than 36 hours. For some reason not enough milk is being expressed.

But wait.. there’s more… we have an expensive aircraft just sitting up on Nauru so why don’t we just make a special flight back to NZ pick up Ardern and fly her back to the island. She can do her thing and then a few hours later be flown back here in style. The jet can then return to the island to later bring the others back.

Not a problem. Let’s do this.

Who cares that the Deputy PM is up there and Aussie PM is not going.

  We don’t have to like the PM personally but she does have a young child and I think we should extend tolerance so she can do her basic duties. Her being at the Forum is reasonable. Other heads of state may feel offended if she wasn’t present. Nauru is central, family are there too.
  
  MMP is giving us some peculiar situations to deal with. If mothers are acceptable in Parliament we have to accept some other compromises.

  As much as I can’t stand the peoples princess I have to disagree with you on this one KS.
  As a major force in the Pacific it is important that our PM attend this Forum. If we had a PM in a wheelchair there would be extra cost, but would we complain and kick up a fuss about it?
  We have a PM who is a new mother – this is going to incur extra costs – there is nothing we can do about that now.
  
  What I disagree with is that she is not going for the whole Forum. As PM she should be there the whole time. The baby can either go with her (vaccine argument is a re herring – its not like they would be staying in a grass hut) or stay home with soy-boy.
  
  I reckon the real reason she is not going for the whole Forum is that she (or her handlers) know that she will be completely out of her depth.
  
  She is only comfortable talking to primary school-kids.
  
  Who cares what the Aussies are doing – their political system is a shambles anyway.

Liu Qiangdong, the Chinese internet billionaire also known as Richard Liu, has been involved in an incident in Minnesota at which sexual assault is alleged to have occurred. The police haven’t yet decided whether to bring charges.

Liu was named recently as the host of a party in Sydney at which a sexual assault allegedly occurred. Liu wasn’t accused of any wrongdoing or charged with an offence from this incident, but he unsuccessfully tried to have his name suppressed from reports about the party.

Liu founded JD.com, one of China’s leading e-commerce sites. He graduated with a sociology degree from the People’s University of China, which has links with China’s political elite.

JD.com in a statement has said Liu was “falsely accused” in the Minnesota incident.

        According to their website between 50 & 60% of their work is government funded. I guess that they would have charitable status to bludge the balance.
        
        Like many of these organisations (eg the Salvation Army, Greenpeace, the Drug Foundation) few begrudge them a few bob to help carry out the work they do.
        
        What boils my piss is when they use tax free money & even money extorted via taxes to lobby Government.
        
        Lobbying is no more charitable than churches using their charitable status to ram their fairytale shit down everyone’s throats.

        Perhaps yet in the beginning, at least, they did provide a way out for women & kids trapped in some really dis-functional relationships. Still it didn’t take long for the bull dykes & man haters to take over.
        
        Nearly thirty years ago Mrs Nasska ended up having to sort out one of our daughter’s friends after the loser she was living with started laying into her. The Women’s refuge helped but according to the cook, the anti-male attitude shown was palpable.

        What I used to find at Women’s Refuge is there were some wonderful lovely women there, but they never seemed to last long…
        I once spoke with a nice but very assertive (even aggressive at times) coordinator who wanted to help families stay together.
        She had just come back from a conference and remarked on how downright scary some of the women there were.
        It would be interesting to see what they are really like these days, but how would you find out?

        Whether you want to believe it or not, a lot of people (not just males) are bullies by nature, and become virtual little Hitlers behind closed doors when their power is not challenged.

  It seems the age old Jewish- hatred, violence, murder and persecution of the goy is becoming even more extreme in recent times.
  
  They are now openly rounding up those they consider of inferior race and placing them in camps for disposal. Openly gunning down unarmed kids, burning churches and only recently were forced to abandon the Christian Tax.
  
  The Jews have always undermined the goy, but something has changed to allow them to show their contempt for humanity more openly. Measures need to be taken. There needs to be a ban on Jewish immigration until we can figure out what’s going on. We need to build a wall around Israel – nothing in or out.
