”Aotearoa New Zealand’ is being increasingly used to label our country, by parties, unions, organisations and companies, as well as in general use. To an extent this is probably by popular use, but is there a stealth campaign behind it as well?

I like Aotearoa as a name, and don’t have any empathy with ‘New Zealand’ – we are not new, and we have no obvious connection to Zealand, an island in Denmark.

But I think we should have an open debate about the name we want to use officially for our country, and make a democratic decision.

I think this should be done separately to and without the complications and delays of other decisions like flag, anthem, constitution and republic.

    There should be absolutely no question.
    This ,our country that was built by our ancestors, not the rabble of tribes that fought each other until there was some law and order, is New Zealand .
    To try and change history and enter in to another debate like the flag , is not going to help us one iota.
    
    New Zealand.Be proud of it and those that have benefited from what was once a great nation should be proud of it.

      Friday 4.00 o’clock presser – ‘we need to have a conversation about this. I have set up a fully transparent committee to investigate and we will act on their recommendations. Should the committee fail to recognise the remit and come up with something other than they have been directed to find, we will have a posidive ‘captains call’ to finalise the process of confirming Aotearoa as the capital of New Zealand’

      Although that I agree that the Maori language was ‘vigorously’ discouraged in schools, my understanding is that it was at the direction of Apirana Ngata, as he wanted his people to learn English?
      
      What I can not understand is why that meant that Maori was not spoken at home, religions and languages have been suppressed in many countries but they usually go underground and survive, but this was not blanket suppression, and it was not to homogenize Maori.

        In the 1930’s the Elders had decided that their language was not adequate for the future. I know of that issue elsewhere in the Pacific too. English opened the gates to education and development.
        
        NZ is unusual with our Pacific non-homogenous population so the former native language did not develop into a modern working one like Samoa or Tonga. Samoa compromised by teaching English as well to further their people.
        
        Maori had only gotten to the point that it had to be English or an embedded transliterated equivalent to deal with modern actualities and concepts. The Elders decided It was easier to leave the two languages alone: Te Reo in its forms could still hold the treasury of genealogy and the formal rites of the Marae with English providing the modern world facility. Tereo would stay on the Marae as the people moved into the cities.

      Another difficulty in calling this country Aotearoa is that it looks too much like Australia.
      
      It’s taken the international community long enough to locate New Zealand on a map of the world. Giving our country a name that looks similar to that of our giant western neighbour is only going to confuse the situation even more.

        Right Jade Warrior though being a proud Kiwi living off shore to stretch the pension to it’s max locals only get told where I come from. Often followed by a responding question of “do you know where that is?”About 10% have some idea but do know about our cows and milk while the rest take a stab at it. They are also surprised to be told the the NZ Government gave the local dairy industry $4.5 million dollars to help lift whole milk up from the 20% they were producing. Also plenty of herd management and advise to help get the most out of their herd. Read some time back over a Macca’s breakfast in a local paper which was great to garner a little local knowledge.

    Funny kowtow Commie Cindy again seeking refuge in the usual way when the push starts be felt from bad decisions. Addressing yet another group of students she said : “that she regrets not being able to speak New Zealand’s indigenous tongue.” Priceless.
    The indigenous claim is false for a start and it is a native dialect that now has a jingle name tag that even the natives are happy to see it die. Ask Mr Henara why he thinks it should NOT be compulsory. He has skin in the game.

  New Zealand, was the name give to our country by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. He named the country after the Dutch province of Zeeland, not the Danish island.
  
  As for the Maori name for New Zealand, those stories have a great deal in common with the the myths of Maui, ie they are just myths and made up.

      RF, yes I realised when I was a kid they were porkies. Nobody could explain how tribal could have a common set of myths when it wasn’t until Cook in 1770 had circumnavigated NZ and prepared the first known charts of the islands. With that you realise they were made up stories. The best bit is questioning the legend that is Kupe and the migration from the north Pacific in canoes against the winds, tides and currents of the Pacific. Given they couldn’t get an equivalent canoe out to sea in 1990.

  I totally agree with Pete George! We should definitely get rid of New Zealand and get a new name, something along the lines of “the People’s Socialist Republic of Aotearoa”.
  
  We will then need a president and of course there can be no other choice than Helen Clark as President of the new People’s Socialist Republic of Aotearoa. Indeed such will be the enthusiasm for the move I would imagine that she would be named president for life.
  
  Then I think we should get rid of the Treaty of Waitangi settlements and basically tote up the balance sheet and give it all to Maori interests. Then the Maori can run the show while we white people sit on the sidelines contemplating our past and how racist we are.
  
  I think with all of those moves we would be able to satisfy Pete George and his desire for change.

    You’re wrong. These moves alone would not be sufficient to satisfy the Pete Georges of the world. We would need a system of confiscating ‘white’ owned farms – so that they can then be fought over by rival tribes like they were in the past.

    Would a referendum lead to a name change? I think that at this point in time most probably not, but “sink without a trace”? I wouldn’t be so confident about that. Why? Like it or not, rightly or wrongly, some NZers, the younger in particular, are more receptive to such things than KB’s demographic (like most blogs of its type, KB attracts largely like-minded people who can reinforce each other views). And, unlike the flag issue, there are only two contenders.
    I’m not advocating anything – just an observation.

      SGA, if you are talking demographics, a name change for New Zealand would more likely be to something like 新西兰.
      
      That is the Chinese name for New Zealand. It’s pronounced something like “Shin Sheeeland”, so it’s obviously a Sinified version of the sound of our present name “New Zealand”.
      
      I don’t read Chinese, but a Chinese person told me once it meant something like Beautiful Jade Land. I don’t know whether that’s accurate, but if it is, it beats Long White Cloud.

    But Aotearoa is the Northern Maori word for land, Southern Maori had an equivalent word that was different. It is not likely to be the real word for NZ because many traveled Maori knew that it wasn’t ONE island as their green stone came from
    the south island. If it were the Maori word for NZ it would be have a suffix plural Aotearoaroa. More Neo-Marxist disrespect the white guys history.

        err… I genuinely can’t follow you? Fake names and explainable names? So, sorry, I’m not sure what I’ve cleared up for you? If you mean names can be pretty arbitrary (even “New Zealand”), yes, I agree with you.
        If I’m honest, most of my attachment to “New Zealand” is my personal history of using the name and identifying with it rather than it is more “real” or “explainable” in some absolute sense. Apparently George Grey used the word Aotearoa back in the 1840s, so it has been around a while?

        More generally, I’m not sure of the history or reasons for name changes – Ceylon, Siam, Burma and East Pakistan, spring to mind immediately. I think various Pacific Islands had been called “Suchandsuch Islands” at some point? New York was New Amsterdam at one point, wasn’t it?

        Australia, comes from Latin, as you will know.
        
        Canada is French-Canadianised Mohawk, but the United States is pure English. Perhaps the white American politician they call Pocahontas will seek a new Indian name for her country.

        From memory, it was expedient, I think. The nations encompassed a variety of different local languages and the colonial spread of English throughout the more educated adminstrative people made it an obvious choice as a common admininstrative language.
        Same sort of thing has happened in Europe, I’ve read. You may have a company with bases in Sweden, Germany, and Spain, say – English is the lingua franca. Easier to find people in each country with that as a second language (Similarly, I think French was the common tongue of diplomats generations ago).

        We’ve even had an Australian Federal senator doing the equivalent of American politics’ Pocahontas, and claiming she’s descended from the Tasmanian aborigines – which present-day Aborgines seem to deny.

    Maori had no concept of a “country” and NZ was never the country called Aotearoa.
    Just on practicality and commonsense alone – how many billion references are there globally in books, maps etc etc that then would become redundant.
    I have not heard a sensible and logical reason for there to be a name change either.

  Aotearoa was one of the names for the North Island of NZ (along with Te Ika a Maui).
  
  It started being popularised as a name for the entire country by Pakeha writers in the early 20th Century.
  
  Then Aotearoa New Zealand began to be bandied about in the 1980s-1990s.

      Our universities have set up degrees to Ph. D. level in Maori language, Maori oral history, and kapa haka. Compulsory Maori in schools will set up jobs for these graduates. Their degrees won’t be useful for anything else.

The Government is continuing to tackle the housing crisis with a transformational programme to build around 10,000 new homes for families in Mt Roskill that will be linked up to Auckland’s communities through the planned light rail line, Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford has announced.

“This redevelopment will include more than 2,400 modest, affordable KiwiBuild homes for first home buyers, around 3,000 market homes, and more than 3,000 new state homes.
That’s 8,400 homes – not 10,000

But –
“Building in Roskill South has already started. Under stage one, 80 new state homes will be built, with the first ready to move into next year.
OK: 80 new state homes

“Stage two will begin mid-2019 and will see 90 worn out state homes replaced with around 300 new homes, including around 95 KiwiBuild homes, around 60 state houses and market homes.
so minus 90, 10 down on stage one, plus 300, so really 290

“The Roskill South part of the redevelopment will be finished in the next six years, with 302 new state homes and 578 affordable market homes being built.
That’s stage two’s 290 + 302 + 578 = 1170
So where the hell is 7,230 homes missing from the 8,400 above,
or worse still: 8,830 missing from the 10,000 in the release’s opening sentence?

But then the legend on an accompanying map says …
Mt Roskill Development Project
The potential to deliver 10,000+ warm, dry and healthy new homes for Housing New Zealand and private home owners by replacing more than 2,000 existing HNZ homes in Mt Roskill.

So, either I have made vast mistakes in reading and comprehending this, or it is mostly meaningless drivel, which does not inspire the business sector with confidence, nor anyone else.

And this is within one press release, let alone trying to relate it to dozens of other Twyford releases and statements. On housing; then the same Minister is messing with roading and infrastructure, Shane Jones with trees, Ardern and Robertson redefining poverty, and Little and Davis confusing justice and corrections, and so on, ad nauseam.

And then, beyond this lack of transparency, honesty or integrity from this Winston Peter’s selected Government, there is always the crucial unanswered question – “With their four year, six years (above), and ten year proposals, is there any assurance or the slightest indication that an incoming National administration will carry on what Labour has projected into the future?”

  With Twyfords announcement was a picture of the tram on the street with another disappearing into the distance.
  
  I am of an age to remember trams in Wellington, Island bay in particular. (we were given a penny to take the tram to school when it was raining, just the one as it was assumed that the rain would have stopped by the time it came time to come home, We walked to school in the rain and spent the penny; we liked rainy days!)
  
  A tram travels up the road and stops to let off and collect passengers. The passengers walk between the tram and the kerb so the cars behind cannot pass the tram. The tram moves off to the next stop and repeats the passenger changing again all the way to the destination.
  
  The cars behind stop and start every time the tram stops; the queue of cars does not get any less, their movement and progress is impacted, impeded and dictated by the tram.
  
  The motorists will go down alternative roads to reach their destination; what will this do to the traffic of roads surrounding the tram routes?
  
  Can anyone tell me how these trams are going to improve the flow of traffic around Auckland?

Can anyone tell me why so many of academics have so much say in our media about politics. What annoys me is that the media are supposed to be neutral in their opinions which sometimes is hard to believe but the amount of Proffessors or others in our Universities are most times dam right biased which in my opinion is a slight on our Political system.

    Whilst I do not doubt her mastery of the female game she does prove that the standard of female tennis is appallingly low. Let’s be honest, Williams is obese, she’s not “a little bit overweight’, nor is she ‘curvy’ she is obese. The fact that she still dominates the female game proves the poor quality of the competition.     Russell was at Massey Agricultural College so not a real university.
    In recent times she has not been a lecturer at Auckland University.
    She did lecture in Australian Universities and had Jan the Ban(Thomas) as her boss as Massey Ag although the overlap would have been short.
    
    She carpet bagged her way into New Lynn, Auckland after the apology for a man left it pretty vacant.
    She stood for the Labour lot in Rangitikei in 2014.
    
    PS. I wonder if the Beige Badger, Pete George, does not like the name New Lynn.
    Perhaps it could be changed.

      Massey and Lincoln agricultural universities were important parts of the growth of our agriculture-based export industries. They had an international reputation in agriculture and bio sciences.
      
      It’s only in recent decades that Massey has fallen to become another of the social “science” centres.

I have noticed the supermarkets are doing a roaring trade in jute and calico bags.

A local community group has been appealing for donations of these bags so the poor can now carry their lamb flaps home in style. I donated a pile.

So the boot of my car now has 8 jute bags. I also have a couple of thousand plastic bin liners / laundry bags / dog poo bags.

Here’s what Mt Roskil MP Michael Wood had to say last year when NATIONAL announced plans for a significant revamp of housing in his electorate:

Up to 700 Auckland state houses will be replaced with about 2000 new homes, Mt Roskill MP Michael Wood says.

The Labour MP said a major housing redevelopment was being planned for Mt Roskill and the community was being kept in the dark about it.

The proposed redevelopment was in the area directly south of Mt Roskill cone between Dominion Rd and May Rd, he said.

In February Prime Minister Bill English said there was “plenty of scope” for medium-density developments on Housing NZ (HNZ) land in areas like Mt Roskill.

The developer would be the Hobsonville Land Company (HLC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Housing New Zealand, which was also responsible for the Hobsonville Point development in west Auckland, Wood said.

Once again, it seems like Labour has taken up on an idea that has already been investigated, and claimed it as its own work. But it’s provided a small diversion from all the problems of last week.

Unfortunately, that diversion is likely to be short-lived, as Parliament resumes tomorrow and the PM is going to face questioning over her statements on Friday regarding Clare Curran. I note Curran has deleted her Twitter account, but the internet never forgets, and I suspect Curran’s g-mail account will still come back to haunt the government.

For my part, I will focus on Spanish and working through the wonderful novels of Gabriel García Márquez. Understanding a foreign language is a beautiful thing. Don’t waste your brain cells on one that serves no purpose.

    It’s quite interesting that Maori language classes, at least in Christchurch, are much cheaper than courses in foreign languages such as Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian, etc.
    
    For example, on Christchurch courses booked through Risingholme, a Maori course of eight weeks for 16 total class hours costs $70. The equivalent course in German (same hours) costs $119.
    
    That tilts enrolment numbers.

        My young grandson came home from school spouting a poem or some such in maori. I asked him what it meant and he hadn’t a clue. What on earth is the point of learning maori parrot fashion with absolutely no understanding of it. Actually, what on earth is the point of learning maori?

Not long after the Labour paedophile camp earlier in the year, Andrew Kirton found a pretty plumb job at AirNZ. I was surprised he was able to pick up a job with headlines showing he was awful at managing issues. I wondered if Senior officials in government played a part in organising the role for him.

Fast forward to last month, and Jacinda announced the new head of the Business Advisory Council is none other than C Luxton, the current CEO of AirNZ. Could the two events be related?

He helped swallow a “problem” for Socialist-Cindy and in return, he has picked up what will be a pretty well paid “non-job”.

Or am I overthinking this?

Hat tip, One Law For All..

“One of the tribes that have put in a claim to the foreshore and seabed is Ngati Mahuta at the Kawhia harbour in the southern Waikato. To give any rights to this tribe of thugs – even something as minor as a Protected Customary Right under s. 51 and s. 57 of the notorious Marine and Coastal Area Act – would likely lead to the public being excluded completely from the beaches in that area. Ngati Mahuta have already taken the law into their own hands and from time to time shoot at surfers and fishermen who surf and fish off the coast there.

On 21 August, 2018, it was reported in the New Zealand Herald that on 16 August, 2018, a shot was fired at a 14 year old boy who was surfing off Albatross Point, outside the entrance to the Kawhia harbour. He was surfing there with his father and a friend when a bullet hit the sea only a few yards from him. The gun was fired by two locals on the shore who also screamed abuse at them.

In the words of surfer Danny Kereopa from nearby Raglan, “outsiders are allowed to surf there only by invitation [from the tribe]”. Please note: this is meant to be a public beach and not a private surfing beach for tribal members only.

In a previous incident a fisherman was shot at in the same area. (Stuff News, 21 August, 2018). Other surfers and boaties there have experienced the same treatment. According to one Waikato fisherman, “There have been heaps of boats shot at out there. It’s been going on for ten years” and fishermen “get run off the beach”. (NZ Herald, 21 August, 2018)
Cars and trailers have had their tyres slashed, windscreen wipers have been wrenched off, car windows have been smashed, and occupants have been yelled at and intimidated in an atmosphere of ever escalating violence. To give any rights under the Marine and Coastal Area Act to these thugs would only increase their wrongful sense of ownership and would likely increase the violence to outsiders.

To get some idea of the arrogance and ignorance of this tribe one only has to read what Connie Hepi, described as the local matriarch (Godmother?) of the tribe, had to say about this shooting at a schoolboy who was riding the waves off a public beach. She said that she “would not condemn her whanau for protecting their resources. And they [ Ngati Mahuta] own the sea too.” (Stuff News, 28 August, 2018). So, besides condoning violence and thuggery this woman is also a liar as the beach and the waves are not “their resources” but are for the use and enjoyment of all New Zealanders – locals, visitors and even overseas tourists. “We claim the foreshore right around and are only protecting it. The foreshore belongs to us,” she screamed. (Stuff News, 28 August, 2018)

This attitude of ownership by excluding the public from what were once publicly owned beaches and waves is spreading like cancer and is likely to become the norm if these greedy people are given any rights of any kind over the foreshore and seabed. Take, for example, the beach at Whiritoa, south of Whangamata on the eastern side of the Coromandel peninsula, where local Maori have put strong netting right down the beach and into the sea to stop people walking along the beach. They too have the same wrongheaded and arrogant attitude as Nagti Mahuta – “We own the beaches to the exclusion of the public”.

And it’s no use the Government bleating that tribes have not YET been awarded such rights because in these backblocks places far from any police station any thuggish tribe can more or less have their own way.

For the Government to cede ANY RIGHTS AT ALL under the Marine and Coastal Area Act – even rights less than full Customary Marine Title – would be the beginning of the end of public access to the beaches of New Zealand – something that New Zealanders have enjoyed from 1840 to 2013 when the National Government, under the malign influence of that great enemy of the New Zealand people, Christopher Finlayson, took the beaches out of public ownership so that favoured tribes like Ngati Mahuta can seize control of them and, through the wahi tapu provisions of the Act (s. 26 (2), (3), s. 78 (1) and s. 79 (1) (b) or by straight out thuggery in out-of-the-way places, exclude the public from these areas, thus making them private beaches and waves for the exclusive use of their own race-based group – as was the case with “whites only” beaches in South Africa during apartheid.

Michael Joseph Savage, Peter Fraser, and Walter Nash would turn in their graves if they even thought that any so-called Labour government would ever agree to such an elitist and retrograde step as allowing ANY tribe to acquire either Customary Marine Title or a Protected Customary Right over any part of these once public resources.

The consequences of the National Governments opening of this particular pandora’s box will be the inevitable death of some innocent person or persons. And I’m not even sure that will be enough to reverse this nonsense!”

RNZ is making a big deal of the PM’s visit to Wellington High School where she congratulated the school for making it compulsory for all Year 9 pupils to learn Te Reo.

My Girls attended Wellington High School 18-25 years ago and Maori was compulsory for them back then (perhaps it was for only 1 term for the youngest, but the eldest took it for 1 year).

Neither achieved any degree of fluency in te reo, and I suspect I know as much/little Maori as both of them combined, although I’ve never taken lessons in the language.

        The Historic Reserve that commemorates this landing is now located behind a filthy big bark-stripping/log holding pen.
        
        2. I spent 3 years working in Queen Charlotte Sound… based in Endeavour Inlet, but very familiar with Cook’s & Furneaux’s activities in the Ship Cove-Resolution Bay areas. i.e. I read the relevant passages in Beaglehole.
        
        3. As a botanist, I am familiar with the activities of Banks, Solander, The Forsters, Parkinson, etc.
        
        4. As I wrote the overview entry on Astronomy in NZ for Te Ara – The online encyclopedia of NZ, I am familiar with all of Cook’s astronomical work in NZ (again, I read all the relevant literature).
        
        5. You may not be aware of the activities that are taking place here in Gisborne for next year’s 250th anniversary of Cook’s landing, but I am.

  That is partly why I believe te reo is in its death throes. There are insufficient teachers and the language has never been adopted as the principal language of the entire country.
  
  Other Pacific neighbours are much more homogenous so they have taken to using English as well as a second language so they can partake in the modern world. In NZ we already have English and there is little use for an enhanced Maori. Some cultural parts are reserved so are not in the public domain and cannot be taught to outsiders. What remains is basic.
  
  When Maori moved into the cities from their Marae the writing came on the wall.

I see the Greens are pushing compulsory learning of Te Reo.
A bit like their electric cars —where is all the electricity coming from ? In this case where are all the Te Reo teachers coming from?
Support for Maori language has been massive ( in financial terms) since the 1970s. If those who are interested in learning have not not made the effort with all that support over such a long time then compulsion will not help.

  There will be heaps of Maori language teachers. What else are graduates of wananga – taxpayer funded Maori quasi-universities – going to do?
  
  There are also increasing Maori language, Maori history and kapa haka courses at our traditional universities. The State funding institution seems to be pressing the traditional universities to increase such courses further.
  
  Perhaps the drive for Maori education is, first, to provide jobs for otherwise useless qualifications; and, second, to get people in a position to PC brainwash kids in schools.

Bloody hell. Just had reason to use the Christchurch City Council planners for a consent. Planner was great but the council charged them out at $384,000 a year – that’s right, $185 an hour.

The planner might have seen 1/4 of that if lucky.

Just about 90% of comments on here and on Stuff do not want Maori language at all.
Yes the Greens, and Stuff and other people say it is needed.
The question is not where are the teachers coming from.
But Do we want to learn Maori.
The answer is no.

And as others have said the teachers may come from low achieving maori students who can pass Maori so easily as it is only Intermediate school level.

I work with quite a few Maori people and today nto one of them greeted my in Maori it was all Hello or Hi or Gooday.
I don’t think that there are any Maori words in common useage.
Place names sure. (we don’t have any choice)
Haka – only when the All blacks play.
But how many European New Zealanders use whanau, kai or any other simple basic word to each other on as daily basis.?
I would say None or hardly any.

      That some people are dependent on an understandable weather forecast.
      
      Now, I’m old & experienced enough NOT to use the TV forecast as the be all & end all if I’m heading outdoors for a few hours, but quite a few folks do make decisions based on the TV and need information that is clear and accurate.
      
      Tonight’s performance would have been confusing for folks still learning English and for visitors to NZ/Aotearoa.

Tauranga’s Deadly highway.

A person is dead after a car and truck collided on SH2 north of Tauranga this afternoon.

The crash happened between Pahoia Rd and Apata Station Rd about 4.40pm.

A police spokeswoman said one person died as a result of the collision.

    Because people make mistakes and mistakes on that road are deadly. I have lived here for 44 years initially on that road and it has never been different. It carries a huge volume of traffic and no amount of patching is going to fix what is now a major highway.
    
    The death roll speaks for itself.
    
    Much has been spent on the Kaimai road and that is a little better than it was. Today the cops were out up there like flies around stinking corpse. Last week two were killed and two were hospitalized by the appalling road out to Matamata.
    
    We have been robbed of roading funds forever because this area is National so Labour and now NZ first don’t think we should make our roads safe and fit for purpose. Now if this was the Hawkes Bay, well big wide roads forever.

A 10% increase in population since road toll bottomed out at about 300/year (2013 a low outlier) means about 10% more cars on same roads, which means about 20% more cars passing each other head-on. Coincidentally road deaths have risen about 20% in the same time period…

  Tauranga to Katikati is a shocker & the bit between Katikati & the Athenree Gorge isn’t too shithot either.
  
  But if you want to experience poorly designed & poorly maintained roads go North. Puhoi to the top of the Brynderwyn is enough to make your hair stand on end. Towai to Moerewa is no better & the tracks in & out of Kawakawa are reminiscent of country roads back when cockies put cream cans out at the gate.
  
  There’s no money to fix these highways of death…..instead it’s poured into cycle lanes used by wankers for about four months of the year.

Yes I am pretty certain but I don’t think there has been one fatality on the new road from Te Maunga to Te Puke since they built that 4 lane separated express lane.
Its also a pleasure to drive on!
That is what National were going to build until the COL got in and decreed that cycle ways were the way to go.
