Treasury are now telling the CoL they have to be careful in their July report. But still the ignorant SLG ignores such warnings. After all the CoL is transforming the economy.

    Yes, just heard the positive one on radio saying the CoL is committed to working with business, whatever that means, and that she is ”pushing back” on the perception that things aren’t too rosy and tax take may be down. She also said she wouldn’t back down on increasing minimum wage as, apparently, when people earn more they spent more, and she said on proposed labour reforms – god, save us – that a few extra tea breaks would not make any difference.
    And here was I thinking that we were moving back to the industrial relations of the 80s.

        It was labour who crashed the oil and gas exploration industry and in so doing would have sowed the seeds of doubt in the minds of anyone in the business (and arguably any ) community.

    Name calling in the comments really lowers the regard in which Kiwiblog could be held. When I tell people I read kiwiblog the return is very often “how do you handle the cesspool of comments”. So that’s the reputation you name callers give kiwiblog. Not a source of great centre-right information, a cesspool. You damage the cause by stooping so low. “silly little girl”? How much is this nationwide conversation going to cost?

  It is only about 2 years ago that the lefties were in agony over the threat of the TPP which was never a threat but a supreme advantage to this country. The catch-cries included that it was all about John Key sucking up to his evil banker mates and to “big business.” Now that this lot changed the name of the TPP to something utterly fatuous it is “we’re so keen on free-trade we’ll have a conversation about it!” That is the depth of this lot’s understandings and intentions relative to free-trade.     David Parker, on Red Radio, did a major back flip on TPP. When it was pointed out he attended protests about TPP under the previous Government but is now praising it he stated. “I only attended one protest and that was to put forward Labours five points needed so that they could approve this treaty”. David what about thev20+ times you spoke in Parliment saying TPP was dead, a waste of time and Labour would scrap it”

        This is the fallacy of currency devaluation, a fall in currency doesn’t automatically mean more exports or exporters because locals then have to negotiate more orders and more foreign sellers. Then in the potentially 18 month period of waiting for payment, foreign input costs have to be met in real time. Anyhow local producers have to refine their product domestically before they have something competitive for export, a weak undynamic local economy puts a stop to this. What’s the bet in 2-4 years time we’ll have a dynamism problem again?.

        Harkman at 9.20 is right that a fall in currency doesn’t automatically mean more exports.
        
        However, manipulating currency down worked wonders for Germany and Japan as they recovered from World War 2, and it’s been working wonders for China, and it seems to be pressuring the yuan down at the moment.
        
        Some see the euro as a device to keep currency low for German exporters. If Germany were still on the Deutsche mark, its currency would probably be through the roof.
        
        Even Singapore, which manages its currency, does miles better than NZ with our floating currency. This little Asian republic, to which not so long ago we were giving development aid, is now the world’s seventh richest nation, as measured by GDP per capita, while NZ is 48th richest. There are other factors, of course, but the way currency Singapore manages its currency is an important one.
        
        With our floating currency, the theory is that the NZ dollar automatically adjusts to trade balances and capital flows. We’ve had a deficit in balance of payments for nearly half a century. The implication is that the NZ dollar has been and is overvalued.

      It is daunting to realise that the Prime Minister does not know the difference.

        Fonterra.
        Udderly hopeless.
        They went further downhill under Spierings.
        They are not innovative.
        They are a huuuuge lag follower.
        After nearly 2 decades of existence they recently started …drum roll… mozzarella cheese.
        
        They mainly put milk powder in brown paper bags.
        It is other entities -downstream of Fonterra – that add value. Nestle. Independent cheese makers. Independent Ice cream makers like Emerald Foods that was sold offshore in 2015.
        Independent milk formula makers.
        This is where the profits are.
        When independents are successful Fonterra buys them and innovation stops or slows considerably. eg Kapiti.
        
        Fonterra are so removed from the farm down by the Americas cup village area many staff would have only seen cows in pictures.
        The HQ should have been in Hamilton but the less than friendly merger meant that the poor compromise was made to locate it in Auckland. This was driven by Norgate’s Kiwi Dairy based in Taranaki.
        
        Fonterra has been a massive failure and when Australia looked at the model they said – if you can’t compete at home you can’t compete on the world stage.
        The top echelon is stacked with foreign clowns who have been in the country less than 5 years.
        They have brought in some terrible business practices. Scum level behaviour.
        They changed payments terms on suppliers and lied about it. Farmers were suffering from the milk price crash and suppliers got screwed. No one in HQ took a pay cut let alone a haircut. Non-employees did.
        -A2 is kicking their butt in growth and innovation such that Fonterra is now selling the product as an expensive cost-plus model.
        
        – But it ranks 18th out of the top 20 processors for revenue per kg of milk, according to IFCN, a leading global dairy analyst. Fonterra’s revenue was only 60c US per kg of milk in 2016, 40 percent below the average for the top 20, and only one-quarter of the revenue per kg of Danone, the world leader. (Oram)
        [Ah yes, Danone to whom Fonterra have to pay $183 million after the botulism scare. Money that comes from farmers pockets not the salarymen on Auckland’s waterfront. ]
        
        – Between 2011 and 2017, Fonterra’s revenue fell by 3.2 per cent while its payment to New Zealand farmers declined by 7.5 per cent.
        Meanwhile, the number of employees has risen 27.4 per cent, from 16,800 to 21,400, and staff remuneration by 26.9 per cent. In dollar terms, this resulted in a $764 million decline in annual payments to NZ farmers between 2011 and 2017, while Fonterra’s total staff remuneration increased by $417m in the same period.

        A harsh observer might suggest that there are forces inside Fonterra that are trying to crash the co-op if you track activity since 2014. Mmmmm.
        Beingmate, Botulism, missed out buying A2, screwing suppliers, lying etc etc.
        And still more staff are added and with increasing salaries to the detriment of the true stakeholders.
        A strong parallel to Auckland Council.
        
        Gravel Road if you have some proof of innovation at brown bag Fonterra please supply it;

I see in Stuff this morning DOC has been throwing its weight around again, but this time they killed two pet Keas doing it. The arrogance of this department is beyond belief. They have the attitude that they own all native species. The push to farm weka for example, continues to run into a DOC brick wall, yet if farmed there would be weka everywhere.

    I was speaking with a DOC policy guy who talked about DOC getting rid of the Tah (introduced mountain goats) in the Southern Alps. I asked if that was a good idea considering they were great sport for high paying hunting tourists? He said they weren’t native so have to go. I queried what the difference was with the introduced trout in our waterways. Apparently, that is different!

      Fish torturers get way too much say in things, they cost us billions a year in lost agricultural exports and massively higher electricity consumption (to pump water from 100’s of m down) due to their steadfast resistance to any and all river water based irrigation schemes (or proposals to create dams for water harvesting).

  DoC really needs to front up on this one and explain why the hell these 2 elderly, disabled kea were to be removed from the care of competent people.
  
  DoC has a history of shifting animals from place to place and making a big song and dance when they achieve a successful transfer. I think NZers would be very worried if we had the actual numbers of failed transfers. Even more disturbing, if we were to learn that sometimes such data are not recorded.

    I have a long held view on the survival of endangered species, in that, if left to private hands and a commercial commodity made of the species, private breeders will pull out all stops to ensure not only the survival, but huge growth in numbers.
    The free and open market could drive survival and growth.
    The hard part is to get over the mindset of DOC being the only party allowed to dictate how native species are bred and treated.

    You have a smidgen of Maori genes and you’re in.
    
    Ngai Tahu, the richest tribe, has a high component of European genes. The leader until recently was blue-eyed.
    
    Maori and whites have been intermarrying in the south of the south since before the Treaty of Waitangi, and thus at present some southerners are eligible for tribal membership with as little as 1/36th Maori ancestry (that is one great great great grandparent).
    
    Within in a century nearly everyone in the South Island will be Ngai Tahu, and with as little as 1/144th Ngai Tahu ancestry.

  This recent brouhaha regarding Joseph Parker’s visit to a Whanganui school and attendance being restricted to boys of Maori and Pasifika descent has got me thinking.
  
  The school has said that it wants to have more opportunities for Maori and Pasifika boys to engage positively, as they are the most at risk group. Possibly they are, but simply identifying a group and labelling them as deprived does that group, and the individuals within that group, a huge disservice. It tells them straight away that as a member of this group, we automatically expect you to be a failure, and we are going to work really hard to foster that collective identity. That way, when you eventually fail, as is inevitable, you can actually pin that responsibility on WHAT you are, as opposed to WHO you are.
  
  Meanwhile, if you are a child who is not of Maori or Pasifika heritage, and you fail, well, that’s completely your own fault, no matter how deprived your background. I mean, if you fail, and you’re not of Maori or Pasifica heritage, well, then you must have no excuse, because you had the advantage of your race. Deal with it.
  
  The problem with this approach is that it refuses to engage with children as individuals. Imagine if you are a 9 year old Pasifika male, who loves nature, who is fascinated by biology. You have been gifted with an enquiring mind. You want to see how nature works. You have a scientific mind. You want to develop along those lines, to be a scientist, a doctor, an oceanographer, and that’s your dream. Suddenly you are taken to an exclusive event for all your Maori and Pasifika classmates, and you get to meet Joseph Parker. Now that’s not to say that Parker is not a dedicated and inspirational role model, but he’s not the role model for that 9 year old child. That 9 year old child needs to meet the best role models for him as an individual, not him as a Pacific Islander!
  
  Meanwhile what about the 9 year old Pakeha who loves his sport, a keen rugby player who want’s to go all the way. He want’s to meet sporting heroes. He doesn’t care about what heritage his sporting heroes have. He just knows that Parker is one of the best in his profession. He doesn’t care if Stephen Adams is of Tongan heritage, all he sees is sports heroes. Yet according to the staff of that school, his experiences must be aligned to his race.
  
  Yeah, treat children according to their heritage, not according to their hopes, dreams and aspirations!
  
  So, who are the racists here?

As I am considering heading to the idyllic island paradise of the Maldives on holiday I thought I’d check out some facts about it. Seems it is a Muslim country in which all citizens must be Muslims, only Muslims can vote and the President must be a Sunni Muslim. The Maldives hit the international headlines in 2013 when a 15 year old girl was sentenced to 100 lashes and 8 months house arrest for premarital sex. Interesting.

Thought I’d also see if the UN might have something to say about these obvious breaches of religious and human rights. The only reference I could find to UN involvement was a UN sponsored art competition on the topic of ‘Islam- Religion of Peace and Tolerance’.

Irony maybe.

Strategy for Maori language revitalisation up to 2040 has been released. Consultation is open until the end of September. Brief survey (couple of minutes) is at the below link but longer submissions can also be made.

Looks like conclusions already reached, based on the questions. Like the Constitutional Conversation? The one that started with a hiss and a roar and faded quietly way.

But there will be some very vocal folk pushing for (guess what) more money for the bros so expect to see some at least of the strategy implemented and of course funded.

  Agreed. If this were a genuine survey, it would have asked for demographic details in order to weight responses accurately. And, as usual with people pushing a vision, plenty of aspirational goals but nothing explicit on how they will be achieved, e.g, compulsory Māori, at what cost, or any evidence that the goals are realistically achievable.
  
  The first or second question asked if I agreed that Māori language was a key feature of NZ national identity, which leads me to ask KBers for your thoughts.
  
  1) What would you describe as the key features of the national NZ identity?
  2) What criteria, consistently applied, did you use to determine your answers to question 1?
  3) To what extent would you prescribe descriptive features of a national identity for each individual?

Years in the making, the new routes are now being reviewed after just 3 weeks. Seems like some changes have already been indicated but they will take months to set in place.

  If the dairy farmers want to sell milk overseas then they will first have to buy trading shares from people who are not using them.
  
  It’s basically the emissions quota scheme but extended to people trading.
  
  Once the kinks have been ironed out, the idea will be rolled out more widely. For example under the “Plumbing for all” scheme, everyone will get a quota of installing one tap and one metre of pipe. Plumbers wanting to install more than one tap a year will have to buy plumbing rights from everyone who isn’t doing any plumbing. Same idea for “Baking for all”.
  
  Only unionised trades will be exempt.
  
  If you really want to fuck something up, then make it into a government programme.

Unfortunately we have a situation in NZ politics at the moment where the PM doesn’t have to actually do anything but turn up and front the cameras and the MSM will gush over her ‘how does she do it’, ‘a new mother and still able to run the country’….then have some patsy ‘mother’ explain how they could never juggle motherhood and a job so important and she must be wonder woman or super woman! Basically she can actually set up working groups till the cows come home and pass off the hard decisions of Govt. and she will still be idolised by her supporters and MSM …..it’s not going to stop anytime soon KB’rs, and we can do nothing but just watch and shake our heads in disbelief because if we disagree or, heaven forbid, we point out her mistakes we are then misogynistic and petty. Think about how the opposition must feel?!…National need a woman as leader so they can attack the PM’s policies woman to woman.

Got my 2018/19 rates bill yesterday. Increased by $205. All of it fixed charges $55 to fix polluted beaches in the Auckland Harbour & $150 to fix Rodney traffic. This is on top of the regional fuel tax Goofy is stealing from us.

This increase represents more than a 10% increase in our rates bill. Not only has my salary not gone up by more than 10% on the past year, but what is more annoying is not a single cent of that extra money will be spent for the benefit of residents in that part of Rodney where we live.

On top of this Woods (Goofy’s Finance planner) is thinking about an additional charge for the future. This will be to pay for upgrading Auckland’s electricity network. Why? This is so the lights don’t go out with the train system, the tram system and when all Auckland’s buses become electric (1300 buses).
When will this stop?

    In Tauranga our Regional Council Transport subsidy rates went from $62 a year to $137.
    Why?
    The buses drive around all day just about empty.
    That’s nearly $3 a week I am paying and it does not help traffic congestion one bit!

  What is double galling was getting the EC “update” newsletter in the mailbox: a huge colour poster format thing which must cost an arm and a leg to set up and print.
  
  But who cares, it’s only ratepayers’ money!
  
  Councils should wind in the crap they do:
  * No more sponsoring of crappy virtue signaling schemes like bike hire schemes which nobody uses. If they made sense, and people wanted them, they would survive without subsidies.
  * Why do Chch, Auckland and others provide parallel council housing? We already have HNZ. Duplicating these agencies makes no sense.
  * Why subsidise cultural stuff, be that ballet, orchestras, hip-hop or fisting competitions?

  All of the mailers had in addition to the bills various items of council propaganda disguised as information leaflets which must have cost and arm and a leg to put together and mail out.
  Everyone of the leaflets went into the bin.
  A complete waste of ratepayers money.

    It gets worse alex Masterley at a national level if you are on NZ Super. The seniors site has been reworked several time as the division slips so much further away from useful meaning contact. The last was to set up My MSD now several steps on from the original direct contact structure known 7 years ago with Real Me added into the mix.
    Pretty normal public service MO as they avoid doing their jobs being so busy making changes. The most recent change has been the appearance of a “Newsletter” which is nothing more than an extended platform for the COL. This suspicion came with the first edition but completely confirmed with the latest edition. It features that Martin creature who has a raft of stories from an extensive tour of the regions even reaching down the South Island. It is nothing more than a devious method of retaining as well as chasing the senior voters many of whom only know of the silly little girl as a result of mega Media party exposure. As well as the baby naturally to keep their attention. IMO this is blatant politicking on the taxpayers dime while also telling us they are very worried about their future fortunes. Not to forget the silly little girl saying she “is here for a good time and not a long time.”

… Attendees probably left last night with more questions than when they arrived as Ministers, who in Opposition had seemed sympathetic to environmental issues were left qualifying and modifying their stance on major issues.

This was starkly evident in an exchange between Urban Development Minister, Phil Twyford, and the EDS (Environmental Defence Society) CEO, Gary Taylor over urban sprawl.

Twyford had set out an impassioned description of the impact of high house prices in Auckland and advocated the linking together of transport and other infrastructure and new housing developments.

But he also advocated the scrapping or urban-rural limits.

“We believe that we have to manage growth on the fringes of the city,” he said.

“If we do not allow new land to come into the supply we will never ever fix the problem of absurdly expensive urban land.

“With good investment in infrastructure and transport, with more planning, not less to create the future urban environment that we want, setting aside areas of special value and open spaces, acquiring land for transport and other infrastructure, if we then allow the city to grow we will bring down urban land prices and it is absolutely critical that we do,” he said.

Twyford had proposed this when he was in Opposition but, even so, any suggestion that more rural land was going to be absorbed for housing was going to be controversial at an environmental conference.

And Taylor was quick to respond.

“Everything makes sense except I worry about why you need to do away with rural-urban boundaries altogether,” said Taylor.

He said that giving free reign to developers seemed inconsistent with Twyford’s overall objective of having a compact city.

Twyford replied that it was a question of values.

“This is for us, for Labour, for our coalition government, this is fundamentally a social justice issue.

“Our objective is not to build a Copenhagen of the South Pacific.

“We could build a beautiful city with a whole lot of the policies we have talked about.

“We could build a Vancouver of the South Pacific; beautiful but utterly unaffordable.

“I’m interested in us fixing this totally dysfunctional urban land economy.

“If we don’t deal with affordability we will have completely wasted the opportunity that has been given to our generation.”

Woman’s Refuge admits they have clients that report thier partners have never been violent to them. To protect them, to protect the mother child relationship, Women’s Refuge admits they help these women create protection orders.

How is that possible? What is the claim of violence they need protecting from? What is the justification of severely restricting the rights of the male? Why should the $10,000 cost of defending a protection order be imposed on these males?

How are they not conspiring to pervert and obstruct justice. Are they making false statements to get the protection order approved. They must make such a claim but admitted the male is not violent.

It’s secret, shush, don’t tell anybody. Innocent men don’t react well to corruption. Men don’t react well to people corruptly stealing thier children. Men don’t react well to being told they can’t see thier kids when they are innocent good men.

The male will make a mistake. The corrupt act will send him a little crazy. He may try to call his kids. He may send them a birthday present. He might hang out at school, just to get a glimpse of them. He might sent them a letter. He might go home to get tools from his garage. He might try to talk to the ex.

He will be imprisoned for breaking the order. He will be seen as non compliant. The original order will be seen as justified.

His life will be ruined.

  If Woman’s Refuge receives funding from the government, I hope that the funding is not based on measures such as the number of women the Refuge “helps” or the number of protection orders that they generate.
  If so, then there need to be policies in place to make sure that the Refuge does not encourage “bums on seats” to get the funding it needs to keep its staff in the lifestyle that they are accustomed to.

      I wouldn’t call multiple murders per year of women by their husbands “virtually never happens.” And it’s a straightforward matter of risk management: if a risk doesn’t have a high probability of occurring but would have disastrous effects if it did occur, you don’t shrug your shoulders and say “Probably won’t happen,” you take steps to mitigate the risk.

Collins unrepentant over fake news link

The dangers to politicians of being active in social media were highlighted again today when Judith Collins used an online ‘news’ article to demand a response from Jacinda Ardern.

This is known to be a conspiracy web site, and this was pointed out to Collins along with the real legal situation in France.

Senior National MP Judith Collins is standing by a tweet linking to a an article that made false claims about France’sage of consent laws.

France had already made sex with any children younger than 15 an offence, but it did not automatically classify all such sex as rape – neither does New Zealand.
The new law makes it far easier for prosecutors to do so by introducing a new offence of “abuse of vulnerability”. Critics have argued that the new law does not go far enough, but not that the law goes backward.

Collins responded to those on Twitter who asked why she was tweeting out fake news by tweeting to reputable news sources covering the same topic, but in a deeply different way.

She told Stuff she didn’t necessarily “agree” with every article she tweeted but wanted to draw attention to the issue.

“I’m just concerned about the story about France itself,” Collins said.
Collins said she didn’t buy into “conspiracies” about liberals pushing paedophilia worldwide, despite sharing the article which suggested liberals were doing just that in its first paragraph.

Currently, Commerce Commission and Electricity Authority effectively determine how much capital expenditure Vector (and Transpower with respect to Vector’s grid exits) can make. In doing so they effectively decide what level of resiliance the Vector network should have.
So the sections of Auckland Council concerned with area wide resilience seem to be taking a look as well especially following the widespread impact on the Vector network following recent bad weather. I do not see it as imposing a ‘tax’ to pay for upgrade work, it is more a question of finding a balance between appropriate resilience and any extra customers should pay.
If Vector is not allowed an appropriate return on capital investments it and its stakeholders will decline to undertake capital investment, or take a short term view when making investment decisions (ie achieving short term objectives at minimum cost but the aggregate cost would be greater in the long term than if an appropriate programme was adopted).
As far as placing reticulation underground is concerned – who was better equipped for such decision making – the old elected power boards and municipal electricity departments, or faceless bureaucrats.

  1. It will cost AT $44m for Vector to upgrade the network to enable the charging of 1300 buses;
  2. Auckland’s electricity network is NOT sufficiently resilient to support both the proposed tram lines and Auckland’s rail network. Hence AT/NZTAAuckland Council have been in conversation with Vector/Transpower.
  
  To pay for the upgrade Woods proposed another fixed charge on rates.

    In which case something badly smells. Vector should not be expecting capital contributions to upgrade its network to meet such demands. As it is there was general sloppiness in the way capital contributions were treated in the past. Effectively Vector and other utilities got away as treating these capital contributions as their property when corporatetised/ privatised whereas they should have been treated as being held in trust in favour of those who paid them.
    If AT needs to or considers it appropriate to make capital contributions to Vector, then Vector should issue shares to AT which AT can choose to retain or sell off. If Vector is worried about ‘stranded investment’ (providing facilities which subsequently become redundant or under-utilised) I would have no problem with AT guaranteeing a return on investment underwritten by the ability of Vector via a commissioner being able to levy rates if need be (the emphasis being on ‘if need be’). Indeed all the Power Boards in NZ initially set themselves up by borrowing money guaranteed by the ability to levy rates. There was only one case where rates were actually levied – in Southland, and the first Labour Government nationalised the Power Board (with consent) so rates could stop being levied. The guarantee could only be set up if a ratepayers’ poll agreed to it but the advantages of electricity were such that ratepayers’ agreements were forthcoming.

The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) issued a manual that stresses the importance of “diversity and inclusion practice” for staff and trainees in consideration of a variety of “sexual orientations.”

“There may be occasions where staff are unsure about LGBTI issues or are worried about offending members by saying something inappropriate,” the guide states. “Staff are encouraged to respectfully ask questions to clarify these issues, and are welcome to contact any of the support services identified in this guide.”

A broad range of definitions are offered for terms like “genderqueer,” “pansexual,” and “intersex,” as well as a detailed graphic explaining the supposed differences between gender identity, sexual orientation, biological sex, and gender expression for males, females, and everything in-between.

“Unacceptable behavior” by non-compliant personnel should “be dealt with immediately to ensure that ADFA maintains an inclusive learning and working environment,” the guide states.

“All ADFA personnel need to appreciate that the deliberate use of non-inclusive language, exclusion and bullying due to gender diversity are some of the behaviors which can affect LGBTI members.”

Staffers are instructed how to handle a colleague “coming out,” and also to be aware that mental health issues afflict “LGB+” people at a higher rate than “other sectors of the population.”

“It is my intent to ensure that all ADFA staff are provided with the knowledge and skills required to manage, train and support an increasingly diverse workforce,” explains Brigadier Cheryl Pearce in the Command Intent section of the handbook. “This guide will provide a valuable resource with general information that serves to enable ADFA staff so they are better informed when making decisions regarding the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or intersex (LGBTI) community.”

There was a rumour pushed by Labour on 23rd July that they were 17 points ahead of National, From Herald:
“Labour’s internal polling has Labour three points ahead of National. A fairly big baby bump considering where they have been. But it’s their support parties’ result that is the more startling. Both the Greens and NZ First are at seven per cent each. This gives the Coalition plus Greens a seventeen point lead over the opposition”

So we know that was a (surprise!) massive fucking lie as Colmar Brunton has 45N, 42L. 5-6 for NZF and Greens. a 10 pt difference from Labour claim. But what is interesting is timing: it was inserted into news just ahead of polling July 28 to August 1 for Colmar Brunton (that Labour would know schedule for). Effectively trying to push the real poll their way by pretending they were more popular than they really are. Something to be mindful of next time they try it on.

      Meanwhile the economic drums are beating and the COLL have ear muffs on. Their vision and incompetency are inadequate to sustain their office. They are floundering about for advisors, rejecting those certified for the job, offering and telling aspirants what the COLL expects to hear.
      
      The Colmar Brunton showed National with 45% at this stage of the election cycle–that is outstanding. Only a small proportion of voters need to be lost by the COLL. Women, in particular, have proved to be astute in sensing when a govt cannot manage the nations housekeeping. The deficiencies are already being spoken about and votes being withdrawn for next time.

Typhoon 13 (the 13th this season) is lashing eastern Tokyo at the moment. The Japanese Meteorological Agency gives typhoons numbers in ascending order each season.
The Americans give typhoons (even in the Far East) names.
Years ago I remember listening to reports on Japanese TV about “Typhoon No. 6” devastating Okinawa, and at the same time, hearing about “Typhoon George” on Armed Forces Radio battering the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa.
Imagine the job of a translator having to translate a Japanese typhoon report in English for a US audience. You would have to do your research to find out the American name for the Japanese number of the beast.

Don Brash has been banned from speaking at Massey University. You had all better get use to this, the far left in this country see deplatforming speakers and threats of violence as a legitimate tactic and will use it to squash dissent so their multicultural project can continue unhindered.

And in breaking news Don Brash has been banned from speaking at Massey University by the Vice Chancellor after threats of violence were received. So a senior NZ politician is no longer able to speak at a New Zealand university? The thugs of the Left have clearly been emboldened by Ardern’s blessing and the total absence of any Police follow-up to their threats of violence. This country is seriously fucked.

      In my naivety I considered Massey to be simply a publicly-funded University, an institution to educate young-adult students in subjects and disciplines that will support their future professional and occupational lives.
      
      My simplistic thoughts are obviously more old-fashioned (and maybe more anti-social?) than even I appreciated.

  The University considered providing additional security for the event, but decided the risk of harm to students, staff and members of the public was too great…
  
  That would be bad enough just on the face of it, ie what happens to academic freedom if anyone can get an event cancelled just by making a few veiled threats?
  
  However, the VC’s words (quoted by others on the thread so I won’t duplicate them) make it clear the actual reason for cancelling it is that the VC doesn’t like Brash’s opinions. I can understand that she doesn’t let the loathesome racist’s jovial-old-duffer routine fool her, but a university leader of all people should understand what the fuck the word “principle” means.

One certainly wouldn’t be in favour of forcing people to undergo such treatment, but why prevent them if they want to? It really doesn’t matter whether the parents are ‘selfish and uncaring’ or not. The effect on children is the same. That parents, overall, want to do the best for their children is not in dispute. What is in dispute is society very deliberately encouraging parents to do what is not ‘best’ for their children, and manipulating them to that end, in all manner of ways and for all manner of reasons, starting with economics. And yes, fathers are as important as mothers although probably in different ways at different times.

DHC never suggested anyone should believe ‘her’. She quoted the results of a massive amount of research and practical experience, small and large, which has occurred universally around the globe. As she pointed out, “There is a reason that communal child rearing on the kibbutz was discontinued.” As it happens, both Israel and Russia committed themselves to communal/professional child care/rearing to release parents for other tasks. Both discontinued it as a horribly failed process which damaged children and parents and caused massive, expensive emotional and social problems for generations. Of course, none of that applies to ‘us’ – we’re special.

“If you are a mum or a dad, chances are you can tell some heart-warming stories about some magnificent educators who formed special bonds with your young one and made daycare a lovely place to be. If you’re my daughter, you ask to see your early childcare teachers over the weekend!”

What a simplistic and nonsensical statement. Children will try to bond with whatever they have available because they need to. There isn’t a choice. That someone could think it’s great that a child might bond to a childcare teacher more than or equally to a parent, to the extent that they want to see them on the weekend – and more importantly, can’t – is not a good thing. All it means is that the child is struggling to find a permanent, meaningful, ‘parent’ to bond with and/or cannot distinguish who that is supposed to be – mostly no-one.

This is the typical unbelievably ‘romantic’ notion of modern society – it’s all about ‘luuuuv’, however temporary. ‘Luuuuv’ conquers all – except this sort of sham, shallow ‘luuuuv’ doesn’t. And no, it doesn’t matter how ‘sincere’ and ‘dedicated’ teachers may be. They’re teachers, not parents. When push comes to shove, they work for a certain number of hours and then it’s over. They make no permanent commitments to a child – can’t if they want to. They can be, and often are, removed from a child at the drop of a hat, never to be seen again.

I tell you what – no adult would choose to live that way, and those that do try to live that way rarely (if ever) have successful relationships. What they learn is how to have failed relationships or none at all. Any relationship is more than the sum of its parts, particularly as relates to constancy, commitment, and continuity. There may be some areas in which outsiders can serve a need of an individual from without but there is a point at which there is no purpose being in a ‘relationship’. Children don’t get to make that choice. They just have to live with it – apparently justified by the emotional or economic motives of their parents and/or society.

If that’s the deciding factor, I suggest that our divorce laws be changed to determination based on the ultimate emotional/economic motives or personal intentions of the ‘offending’ partner rather than on the dissatisfaction of the one who feels their needs are not being met, or rather are being better met elsewhere, perhaps at work.

        Backbenchers and Senior Teachers both earned about $18k in 1979, 2.25x average wage of $8k. now median wage from paid work is $50k, which multiplied by 2.25 would be $125k. Backbenchers start at $164k, with all sorts of supplements, huge superannuation and other lollies. At least 30-40% boost relative to hoi polloi.

    I’m just seething after receiving my rates bill which has increased by more than 8%, after several months of Goff goofs (banning Molyneux and Southern, coughing up $1 million to build a statue at Bastion Point, half his councillors expressing no-confidence, which is following on from him refusing to allow them to read a report that WE paid almost a million dollars for, to start with).
    
    I’m lucky … probably like most people here it won’t make a lot of difference to me personally. But those people who are on fixed incomes, paying higher rates, and paying more for petrol, may not be so fortunate.

    Voters in the Manawatu region voted against Maori wards. Hobsons Choice was active in the campaign. According to Thomas this was hate speech. It went against Massey University’s view of the role of the Treaty. It is therefore a prohibited view, that should not be heard on a university.
    
    I did wonder during the furore over Southern and Molyneaux as to whether speech bans would then be extended Don Brash. It didn’t take long to find out.
    
    To my mind Thomas has utterly failed in her duties as a VC. If she can ban Don Brash, and also brand the majority of the voters in her region of the Manawatu as purveyors of hate speech, she has no comprehension of the idea of a university being a place of free speech.
    
    Masseys University’s view of the role of the Treaty is not the only permissible view, though apparently not so in Thomas’s world view.
    
    While I may not agree with Don Brash on settlements, preferential university admissions, etc, Don has every right to espouse a perfectly reasonable view that the Treaty should be primarily interpreted as treating everyone equally, as as opposed to allowing special treatment to reverse inequality.

        Factors that make these deaths suspicious is the lack of remorse exhibited by the DOC spokesperson following the news and in the criticism of the keepers of the Kea.

Having been to Lombok many times in the last 30 years and having stayed on the Gilis, I wonder why tourists didn’t camp out for a few extra days and then they could help the locals clean up after what looks to be significant damage. A lot of the islanders have very little and tourism will no doubt drop off. Would have been nice to see people helping rather than fleeing.

        Compulsion would kill Te Reo within 5 years. They don’t have the teachers for it. In one college I know the English Teacher has the job.
