This is how you actually save a lot of lives, and improve the lot of millions. Sure a few soldiers might get shot but that’s their job.

While Trump’s at it, he might get the armed forces to drop in on a few other shit holes in Central America and deal with the source of much trouble that is U.S.-bound.

If you’re getting wasps in your house, go eradicate the wasps’ nest. Then ordinary people can be safe and get food to eat

The answer to overwhelming third world mass immigration is re-colonisation.

  I have also been wondering if post colonial governance has failed in many countries and perhaps a stable world needs stable countries to take over the governance of the shit holes. There is talk of future potential migration of a 100 million people so no action could have dire consequences.

  A classic example – the Dominican Republic. Civil war in 1965 was quashed by US military action when socialists had been in power since the 1930’s, and since 1966 democratic Governance makes this country the jewel of the Caribbean.
  
  More proof? DR is the eastern 60% of one island – the other 40% is … Haiti. Haiti is of course an example of how not to run a country, and fairly described by even the optimistic as one of the world’s s..tholes. Even Venezuela is a success compared to Haiti.
  
  So where would you rather live? A country with a progressive successful economy and the highest tourism rate in the Caribbean – albeit governed by a ‘nasty’ democratic elected leader who was helped into power by a military invasion from an interventionist USA, or Haiti? Air NZ, who market the national airline by promoting NZ’s ethos as clean, green and natural have upset the farmers of NZ. Our farmers produce delicious, natural beef and lamb so were horrified to hear that on a recent Air NZ flight from Auckland to LA the passengers were served synthetic meat. A bad corporate decision from our national airline. Farmers are angry and threatening to boycott AirNZ.

I can attest the real beef cheek served on AirNZ is sublime, wonderful, gorgeous, and cannot be topped in taste and texture.

  At least the farmers are cleaning up their act by improving the waterways etc. You cannot say the same about cities.

    I live in Auckland and near a beautiful beach. I’m not an avid swimmer or beachgoer (although I’ve got a body like a Baywatch lifeguard)…. but on my admittedly infrequent trips I have never seen all this foam, plastic and pollution that people keep on about. I think the media and the ecofucks are imagining it, frankly.

      It is the e’coli levels in the water I’m guessing DM. Flushing out all those old pipes that should have been replaced before all the new crowds moved into Auckland. Replacing essential underground infrastructure just isn’t as sexy as new above ground for a virtue signalling mayor promoting himself.

        I think there are two issues not related to the stormwater pipes themselves.
        1. It is what goes into the pipes that is the problem, urban run-off’s are not pure clean water. There could be sewage cross-leaks but this is probably insignificant. There has been suggestions that stormwater is ‘treated’ to remove solids and serious contaminants (eg oils) and this is done in some cases (eg oil interceptor tanks in stormwater exits from electrical substations) but is by no means universal. The cost of full sewage type treatment for all stormwater would be prohibitive.
        2. Significant quantities of untreated sewage getting into waterways. This happens when there are overflows, pumps fail or when facilities are being maintained. It is made worse when stormwater is discharged into sewers because of improper cross connections etc. Resource consents are generally obtained for this. Councils face prosecutions for discharges unless they show they have taken all reasonable precautions. Complete prevention of contamination is impossible and near complete convention would be prohibitively expensive.
        It is ironic that a privatised three waters utility like Thames Water in UK would only be too happy to have a big capital spend-up to minimise issues and grow the business but are restrained by regulatory authorities.

        Yes… but most strains of e.coli aren’t actually harmful (only some give you a stomach ache) and anyway, why would you want to swallow seawater? If you went for a walk in the bush you wouldn’t expect to eat the soil would you?
        
        I think the people who harp on about our ‘tewwibly polluted beaches’ should go to India or bloody Nigeria and have a look.
        
        Another thing…. has ANYBODY ever seen a plastic bag on a New Zealand beach? Or floating in the water? Or a fucking DRINKING STRAW?
        
        These do-gooder ecofucks are idiots and it’s time somebody flew a drone over, say, Takapuna or Mission Bay beach to show how beautiful and clean it is.

        Perhaps peterwn that the most significant cause of so many floaters reaching the beaches is that storm water or waste water is connected to the sewage pipes instead of the drainage pipes. Local bodies are constantly checking for illegal connections with a simple smoke test that can reveal this is the case. What goes underground stays underground unless it is tested and the sewer line is often easier to locate than the storm water. Now they are regulating for homeowners to add storage of waste water to provide a buffer for heavy rainfall levels to limit the escaping darkies. Yet another holding pattern to avoid doing what they should be getting on with to fix infrastructure. The gummit will fix it.

    Or perhaps O avoiding flights that are prefixed NZ might lead to a far more satisfying travel experience. Thankfully with premium airlines offering direct Christchurch flight it is easy to even avoid their domestic service where on the very last one the hostess was bigger than the walkway down the centre of the aircraft. Love that diversity but had to laugh as the pilot made so many adjustments every time she traversed up or down the isle. Can only speculate what the pilot would call that correction?

Where are the howls of outrage about a 20year old sexually violating CHILDREN?
Where are the howls of outrage at a political party supplying alcohol to minors and not supervising an event where alcohol and minors were present?
But we do have howls of outrage where GROWN UPS get drunk and do stupid things (sexually harass) their juniors (still adults).
Where this is bad and not to be accepted:
1. Nobody was charged with a crime
2. Nobody is suggesting that they should be.
3. All participants were adults.
4. The harassed,were incapable of saying NO or not taking part, not showing up in the first place?
5. I refuse to believe, this being “widely known”, that these ADULTS didn’t know that harassment was possible if they went to this event
These people are lawyers or senior law students, they are intelligent people, well educated people, but claiming they knew nothing?

  Why any outrage? Maybe the defence will be that he aspired to be a senior partner in a law firm, a movie mogul or the United States President and was doing the groundwork which seemingly are part of those roles.
  
  To the argument of age, the contention could be that the age and power balance was far more even in his circumstances that those in the position he is aiming for.

  How did Bazley get apppointed to conduct the inquiry reported in the media? The allegations or suggestions of misconduct belong to the Police to review. The Magna Carta prevents the Crown from interfering in justice. It can no longer appoint private assassins or conduct inquisitions. This COL must resign before the people take to he streets to eject them.
  
  The report is extremely commercially damaging and is an affront to natural justice. The law firm should sue the govt accordingly. The nature of the inquiry is much more significant than its contents.

      Most of their forbears came from Bangladesh (when it was part of India) and they were part of a movement to move out of Bangladesh into non-Muslim lands to spread the Islamic way of life. Lately, they thought they could get away ‘activism’ (agitation) and ‘militancy’ (terrorism)…. but sadly for them (and happily for Myanmar) the Myanmar authorities weren’t going to be pushed around by a bunch of ragheads. I’m a big fan of Air New Zealand and I’m horrified to hear that they would serve synthetic meat. Our tourism product should be a showcase for our premium products and that includes our meat and veg. There’s no place for synthetic crap aboard Air NZ aircraft.

The irony is rich in this one, especially given the appearance in court yesterday of the alleged Labour summer camp offender on four charges of indecent assault.

Whilst no one believes that Andrew Kirton’s departure from the Labour Party last week is unrelated to the summer camp allegations, Jacinda Ardern initially rejected calls for him to resign. Labour Party president Nigel Haworth is not going anywhere – yet – although that may change when the “independent” report is completed.

So what’s the difference between Russell McVeagh and the New Zealand Labour Party? Helen Clark’s judgment has failed her on this one, leaving her wide open to allegations of hypocrisy.

Its estimated these pods would save the lives of 1M babies but Clark is bitching about having the concert because of the noise. On flight NZ90 yesterday, the yogurt was Japanese (it came in a Japanese-sized pot, with Japanese lettering), so I assume that the cheapest beef in Japan would have been sourced by the in-flight catering company, so the beef was probably from the US or Australia.

    Funny you should mention wagyu. It can be very expensive.
    I checked out meat prices at the Tokyu department store near Gotanda Station in Tokyo a couple of days ago. Some meat prices are on a par with those in Auckland; others are more expensive.
    Chicken is $NZ15 a kg (cheaper than in Auckland). Eggs are cheaper. Pork is slightly cheaper.
    NZ lamb (boneless) is around $32/kg. (Sold in small, 180-gram packs.)
    Australian and US beef dominate the low-end of the beef market, with domestically produced non-wagyu beef marketed at a premium. Of course, Japanese-grown wagyu is in a class of its own. I don’t even want to go into the eye-watering prices they were charging. (Of course, this is too expensive for ordinary Japanese families to purchase. Thank goodness for American and Ozzie beef.)
    Zespri kiwifruit are selling well, at $1.84 each. They are about the only example of a NZ enterprise actually owning and controlling their own brand.
    For some crazy reason, celery is hideously expensive and is sold by the individually wrapped stalk, at around $2 each. Go figure. Celery is not commonly used in Japanese home cooking.

        Japan is my favourite country of the many I’ve visited. The people are clean, polite, well organised AND they don’t allow hordes of illegal immigrants or muslims in. They have successfully maintained their culture and have not become a carbon copy of the rest of the world. We could learn a lot from the Japanese.

        I can recommend doing your own research into a holiday in Japan well before you go. Among the excellent sources of information are YouTube.
        Accommodation at a business hotel in Tokyo is around $70 per person per night.
        You can save lots of money by grabbing sandwiches, yogurt or Danish pastry at a convenience store (like Lawsons, FamilyMart or Seven-Eleven). I only spent about $15 for breakfast for 3 people last week (sandwiches, coffee, doughnut, yogurt, onigiri).
        Trains are cheaper than in Auckland, at around $3 to travel half a dozen stations along the local line.
        The food is inexpensive and delicious (if you eat like a local).
        There is so much to see and do, so you really need to do your research in advance.
        Also, the best way to travel between Tokyo Station and Narita Airport is by the highway bus. It only takes 70 minutes and costs only $13 (a fraction of the cost of the trains (the Narita Express train is much more expensive than the bus).
        I am sorely tempted to wait for an Air New Zealand special deal on a return flight to Tokyo, book a week at https://www.mystays.com/en-us/hotel-mystays-gotanda-tokyo/ (the place where I stayed) and just check out Tokyo. You could have a great time for a couple of grand!

  A few years ago, when pay was not the same, the Ladies winner, Hana Novotna, was bemoaning that she didn’t get paid the same as the Gentlemens winner.
  
  The irony was that she also won the doubles and mixed doubles, so actually received more money than the male singles champion. So was able to do this because her games were far less strenuous being only best of 3, and no top male, playing best of 5, can possibly play doubles etc and be competitive.

        It’s too late. The whole Arab world has out of control breeding, population increases of 5-15x since WWII. That (plus the inherently higher violence levels of polygamous cultures where many young men are denied sex) is the ‘root’ cause of all their violence and warfare, and they are all going to slide into terminal in-fighting as population continues to rise uncontrollably and oil money tapers off. Soon they won’t be able to sustain the intensive agricultural technology needed to feed themselves.

We had the in-laws for dinner last night, and the ol’man was telling us, “…that now he has more time on his hands, he watches a bit of *Question Time* on Sky86”.

But he was saying the thing that really pisses him off, is the *Sign Language Interpreter* that takes up a fair portion of the top of the TV screen, which actually hides a lot of whats happening in the Chamber.

The question he asked was, “How many deaf-mute people would watch Question Time anyway, that warrants everybody else having to put up with that constant and meaningless distraction?”

Probably he raises a very good point. As my missus pointed out, she watches the highly rated *Heartbreak Island*, and they don’t bother catering to the deaf.

  Having the *Sign Language Interpreter* is also a feature of some of the news programs on Japanese NHK Education channel.
  It is a universal feature of State broadcasters, I think, regardless of the country.
  My sister-in-law in Akita Prefecture in Japan is a sign language interpreter who works for the local government. I thought that sign language was universal, like the synthetic language of Esperanto, but she told me that this is not the case. English signing is different to Japanese signing.

Now we are aware that they are totally and blind about the figures they get provided with but this figure must have come from his neither regions. Especially after Stats NZ revisited both theirs and Nationals child poverty number after they made a booboo with then the first time. Even if we make an allowance and let Labour claim the original estimate it is only 35,000 compared to the 50,000 the National tax cuts would have improved life for.

  What people tend to forget is that Trump’s basic energy policy has been until very recently, the very worst possible for Russian interests. If Trump really wanted to support Putin he would pull a “Hillary” and reverse course on Fracking and oild production. Over 90% of Russia’s foreign exchange earnings and big chunk of their GDP comes from Oil & Gas. The extra US production resulting from Trump policies that differ from what Clinton was proposing has put a bigger hold on Russian ambitions by way of reduced income than almost anything else that the US could have done.

Anyway he had Graham Richardson (Richo) and Mark Latham on and they were berating the fact that you can’t say “poof” anymore in Australia and that Labor had gone too far. Apparently Bill Shorten (a total plonker) had a really bad week, but on the 2 party head to head Labor still led the government 51-49 however Shorten is about 16 points behind on on preferred PM, so maybe we need not panick too much about Simon’s numbers.

Now that SBS has come to the rescue of the Aussie soccer fans who were left with zero FIFA world cup coverage due to the total technical fuckup by Optus I’m left thinking about the possible nightmare of a similar disaster with Spark’s coverage of the Rugby World Cup next year. Sky has its critics and rightly so but no one does sports better than them and rugby has its own NZ commentary team.

What guarantees has the Government sought from Spark and what contingency plans will be put in place if Spark fails to deliver? That Claire Curran is Minister of Broadcasting fills me with foreboding.

    It wasn’t the Government’s fault in Australia but the public outrage and potential political fallout meant that Turnbull had to intervene and demand that the broadcasts be taken over by SBS. It cost Optus $8 mill just to get SBS to take it on at short notice, massive amounts of revenue and very red corporate faces.
    
    If Spark were to fuck it up here the Government would have to intervene particularly given Peters’ stance on free to air access for major sports events.

I was always under the impression that ex PM’s who have been hammered at election time sailed off into the sunset once they had got over their embarrassing loss. The usual order of things was that they stayed out of the limelight and kept their opinions to themselves.
So, why is it that the media in this country keep going to the she beast Klark for her opinion?. This is the person who led the most corrupt government in the nations history yet it seems that she is in the news every bloody day of the week.

Klark needs to be reminded by the media and National that she lost, she was hammered, she was destroyed ten glorious years ago thus making her opinion invalid. Furthermore, Klark is not some sort of national treasure, she is a beaten politician (unlike Sir John Key who went on his own terms) and needs to stop meddling in this nations politics. If she wants to be the leader of the Labour party again she should stand as a candidate, until then she should shut the fuck up and enjoy her life living off the tax payer.

Stage one, school principals have in the last week shown they need to be re-educated first so they can get behind the reforms.   I enjoyed my visit to London and Birmingham last week. The Birmingham CBD reminded me of Melborne.
  The canals of Birmingham are worth checking out. It was a strange sensation to see the year “1821” stamped onto a cast-iron bridge spanning one of the canals. In 1821 Japan was still in the Edo Period and isolated from the world. Back in New Zealand, Hongi Hika and Team Nga Puhi were using their muskets to maximum effect.

  Maybe slightlyrighty but it seems this SEAL was called back from retirement so it may have been he was out of the fitness loop and had sagging skill set. That would be one of the toughest challenges even for the highest skilled team members to cope with made even more nerve racking being the wet season. The arrival of heavy rain could well spell the end as they feverishly search for other access points which we might expect they would know after so many years. Lets hope thing don’t get worse for these young people who are still seen smiling through worried eyes.

I’m worried where I’ll end up living when my parents are gone because i have high-functioning autism and even with a job I could not afford to buy a house or an apartment to live and evening renting would be difficult between paying the rent,buying groceries and paying for car rego/WOF/fuel/servicing and paying for repairs if something breaks out of the blue.

  Have you thought about forming a high-functioning autism team (of 3-4 people) and renting out a house?

  @IB it might also be different depending on which DHB catchment you are in as they are not all equal or equally conversant with care requirements. Be assured your needs are not unique and you are far from being alone. Now or in the future.
  In fact you might also consider the prospect of making approaches or somebody on you behalf for a place in a community home. These were the replacement for the care institutions that were closed some years ago. They are occupied by a range of residents from total 24/7 care to some who are almost zero care but can not survive without minimal support. Resident numbers too are varied and being high functioning you could be fairly matched to a suitable dwelling. It has nothing to do with charity as the residents all contribute equally to the cost of their needs from their benefits.
  As Johnboy says you have wisely trapped into a large pool of cleaver caring people who would willingly guide you to achieve the best you can have.

Paying for power to keep warm over winter can be challenging for some households. That’s why the New Zealand Government has introduced the Winter Energy Payment for people who receive New Zealand Superannuation and for most beneficiaries.

If you qualify you don’t need to apply for the payment as you’ll be contacted directly by Work and Income. If you have any questions or would like more information, please direct your enquiries to Work and Income.

How much is it?
The Winter Energy payment is $20.46 per week if you live on your own or $31.82 a week if you have a partner or children.

The situation with the Thai boys is heart breaking. After a brief reading of the situation I was not optimistic. Getting them out by diving is incredibly risky and unlikely to end well. A point driven home by the death of a Navy Seal Diver today.

The pressure on the rescue teams is intense. As well as concern for the boys, they risk being blamed for not removing them, and for any deaths if they do.

The water will rise and someone has to make a call. I’m glad it is not me.

  I think its likely the SEAL guy died of an embolism from multiple resurfacing. He was ferrying tanks between chambers and probably was pushing the limits. Its a shit thing to happen but nothing to do with the diving conditions.
  
  The kids would have a 400 meter swim in very low visibility and in a very narrow space, only wide enough for one person at a time.
  The kids are not big or strong. Scuba gear is heavy.
  
  I would be leaving them there till they can walk out.
  
  *I have done probably 1000 hrs on tinned air and dont like caves.

    The kids won’t be wearing scuba tanks but breathing off their leading diver’s tank.
    There are 1000 people assisting in the cave and there is some belief that oxygen levels are being depleted by all those helpers breathing and expelling carbon monoxide. Another hazard is the water they would be swimming through is full of sewage as the kids had to go in the water while they waited to be found. All in all it is not looking good with heavy rain due any time now.
