I always used to think that we could achieve gender equality when we were able to elect to public office women who were as incompetent as some of the men already there !

Real-time facial recognition technology is almost here. I would have two comments on this.

First, attempting to prevent facial recognition being introduced is futile, King Canute trying to hold back the tide. The potential benefits are too great, there are two many countries and agencies that want it, and too many companies working on it. We need to instead be focusing on how it is used and preventing abuse.

That leads to my second point – a large portion of the potential ethical issues with facial recognition are not from the technology itself but from people assuming it to be infallible. It isn’t. The technology is far from perfect, and law enforcement agencies need to realize this. A facial recognition match alone must not be treated as proof of guilt. It should be an indicative tool only, required to be backed up by either humans viewing the images or more traditional forms of evidence. A person should not be able to be charged (or even given a fine) on facial recognition evidence alone.

Thankfully this issue could well solve itself. Once facial recognition starts to be tested in court, defense lawyers will have an easy time demonstrating the high false positive rate. In a best case scenario judges will acknowledge the limits of the technology, and after a few criminal cases get thrown out and a few civil fines get dismissed, authorities will be forced to start using facial recognition in an appropriate manner.

    Yeah! We get Wee-Bix here! I remember shelf stocking the local New World when I was a teenager and there was a mountain of Weetbix! And sure enough it’s our kids favourite breakfast. That and Marmite or Vegemite on toast.
    Our fav trick to play on Americans is to get them to try Marmite. The nose wrinkles and the eyes open wide:

    Yeah. He’s really smart. Was picked as gifted and talented in NZ but you have to sit a test here which is administered universally at 2nd Grade. If you drop on one of the categories which my son did as he has an unusual intelligence profile, you don’t get the GATE ticket. You just get harassed. Had to run interference for him in 5th Grade. He got told he needed to get on better with other kids and participate in groups. He looked at me and said, ” Mom. If they were all as intelligent as me I would get on with them”!
    Smart as a whip and not a touch of arrogance about him. Top of the board on CS GO.
    Okay that’s my geek-self leaking out. Haven’t had a decent first person shooter game since HALO. Have to live vicariously through my son. Hoping his skills will translate to the field.

    Yup, concussion is a bastard. It changed one of my sons’ lives for the worse. He had to pull out of uni for a year and took over 3 years to come right (well 90% of the way there).
    
    And that happened playing a non-contact sport, while wearing a helmet.

      Thanks Dime and that sucks cmm. Good luck to your son. I hhave faith that shit always works out for the best after I survived a massive intracerebral hemorrhage. Fully paralysed and had to learn to walk again. And take a shit without assistance initially. Never believe your luck runs out.
      And that sentiment didn’t come from the stroke. It came from the day a tornado demoed or did a shit-ton of damage on every house on a street in Taranaki except for my rental property and the same day I got a consent extension by Wellington City Council, the fuckers.

        Yup, I don’t mean to put a damper on your son’s aspirations – just to go into it all with his eyes open.
        
        I believe they have banned the worst issues in gridiron like using your head as a battering ram, which will help.
        
        My son’s injury was a fluke. Very few people get concussion from field hockey (probably one a year or so in the whole of NZ). His was a very bad case – knocked out cold for 3 minutes – probably only one case that bad in NZ once every 5 years or so.
        
        At the end of the day shit happens whatever you do. I’m currently in a moonboot with a broken leg after falling down the stairs at home.
        
        You might as well get on with life, coz life’s going to happen even if you stay indoors!

No respect on TV3 for Lucy Lawless about her tweet stating that she wouldn’t be offended if she saw a kiwi burning the NZ National flag. She said she would think that person was upset and the flag is only a piece of rag, so nobody gets hurt.
Burning our flag, a symbol of NZ shows no respect for our country, for those who fought under it, and for every kiwi who loves NZ. Burning our flag is an insult.

Lawless is a Greens voter so nothing else needs to be added. Idiot.

    The case is Hopkinson v Police. The court used the Bill of Rights to basically overturn the law passed by Parliament and said that burning the flag as part of a protest is not ‘intent to dishonour it’. What sort of conduct would count as intent to dishonour the flag is left unresolved, but probably nothing would.

  I agree, he has steadied the ship. The Government was a shambles before he came in. It will be interesting to see if things go backwards. I think they will as Peters has managed to keep the focus away from Labour MPs. Once Jacinda is back she will be unwilling to take the heat and we will hear more from those MPs again.

    Via a Finance company in Mumbai. The reports that 83 out of 88 applicants checked had used the scam. The fear is there are more, & there are “students” here without the means to support themselves & could be potential victims of exploitation.
    
    Well done, not. Both National & Labour have dirty hands on this as the student visa policy pre dates the Key government & neither the Clark or Key govt were prepared to do anything. Supposedly, because of the benefit to the NZ economy.
    
    Equally, NZ is not the only country to be weak when it comes to the student/visa/immigration scams. I saw the same in the UK when one of my clients was an International Private Education company. They regularly had students who had the visas, arrived in the UK, enrolled (as they were required to do) & were never to be seen again.

    Plenty of foreigners from NZ, UK, US etc have used fraudulent documentation to obtain long term visas of one sort or other to live in Thailand.
    People are only aware of cases such as these Bangladeshis because it effects NZ.
    If I personally know people who have rorted the system in other countries I’m sure the practice is widespread.
    I don’t think we have any right to adopt a ‘holier than thou’ attitude.

Trying to think why Peter Goodfellow (Nats President) took a swipe at Winston’s smoking and drinking habits the other day. As much as I detest Winston, highlighting these habits and speculating on his health is below belt stuff. Anyway in his circumstances a bit of whiskey seems to do him good (similar to Guinness easing constipation and otherwise being good for you).
I can only think of one thing – Peter Goodfellow wants to try and put out of reach any thought that National would do a deal with Winston. Hence Winston would be doubly unhappy with this, both with the comment itself and that the comment effectively helps depower him with respect to Labour.
Nicolas Machiavelli would be proud.

  They wouldn’t sign up with Peters because they didn’t like him. They chose their own Party’s “feelings” over what might have been in the Nation’s best interests in the medium to long term election cycle.
  They circled the wagons against Peters and said they couldn’t possibly work with him because of his unreasonable demands which Labour gave him anyway to get the governance power.
  Would NZ as a whole be any worse off now if National had got down from its high horse and done a deal with Peters?
  And no, I am not a NZF supporter at all and would never support them at the ballot box.

      Maybe so. I wouldn’t know about that, but the Nats most certainly would have formed a coalition with NZF given the chance.
      
      As I recall Jim Bolger said Winston was a joy to work with, before he sided with Ardern. Now Smith is effectively saying he was an arsehole.
      
      Winston should only be a bit player in NZ politics, but he certainly causes plenty of fear & loathing because the high & mighty can’t pin him down.
      
      Be interesting to see the NZF polling after the Nats tried to skewer him.

      We need boat hopping provisions too. Peters went full anti-capitalism in his COL selection speech. Who would have voted NZF if that speech had been made earlier?
      
      Now we have a Parliament where the leader of the Labour Party, Jacinda, holds their appointment under union voting rights. Where also, MP’s can be swapped out by their parties and the people have no say.
      
      Where is the peoples control? We seem to have been left with only the Gov. General or the Army to intervene against a rogue government. We have no legal redress.

    That was arguably why we have CoL now:
    3-4% of NZF’s 7% election night voters thought that Winston would go National, since he chose labour NZF vote has collapsed to about 3%.
    
    If Nats had said no Winston pre election, then Winston would likely not have got over 5% and Nats would have scored a couple more points as well and could then have governed with Act or alone.

Is TESLA headed for ‘JUNK’ status?

CNBC report that Tesla’s share price has fallen considerably in the last few months. Of more concern however is that the bond market is now trading one of its subordinated bonds at a whopping 24% discount – that’s $76 per $100 !! Once lenders become concerned and start to lose confidence, particularly if cash-flow is tight and the company needs to raise additional equity, if that can’t be done, then either the business fails or is sold off at a substantial discount in a trade sale.

  Tesla is fine for this year and probably next year. It’s 2020 with all the other car companies bringing cheap/good electric vehicles to market that will sink them.

    There could be a turning point. Even if you had $1B tied up and at risk, would you commit a further $100M if you were not at least reasonably confident that the $100M would in fact solve the situation ? There’s the old good money after bad scenario, and it comes down to a matter of confidence.
    
    Perhaps Tesla’s problem is exacerbated by the fact that they’ve made a lot of capital requests and yet still have serious issues. And it is a major problem that the base Model 3 is in standard form unprofitable – the more they build at that spec the more they lose money.

    Look anyone who has invested in Tesla on the assumption that everyone will drive a Tesla because electric vehicles are the future and Tesla makes electric vehicles and VW and Ford don’t really and on the belief that VW is just stupid and if the market moves in that direction they wont adapt is just stupid.
    
    Tesla is not worth 2/3rds of VW, last year VW made 14bn usd in profit and shipped 7mn vehicles (tesla has done what 300K over its entire life), how much did Tesla make, no tesla made nothing, infact they have sent letters to their suppliers demanding a retroactive as far back as two years, cut in the price of their goods.
    
    Furthermore Tesla bills the model 3 a car which at its base price for an extremely stripped down model is 35K (entry luxury car price) as the car for the ‘common man’, unfortunately it gets worse, the car is so stripped down Elon Musk believes that by the time people put their options on it the average sales price ASP will be in the range of 50K usd.
    
    To put it all into perspective 100K entry level luxury car units (cars and suvs) are shipped each year in the states, meanwhile 17mn vehicles total are sold, this puts the entry level luxury car segment at .5% of the market. 0.5% of the market is not mass market. Its probably not even worth the 70bn market cap plus debt that Tesla has outstanding if you looked at the entire planet.
    
    Tesla is not a 70Bn dollar company, probably not even if they had 100% of that market segment world wide and made some money on each car.
    
    They need to make affordable mass market hybrids that touch the 25K base price of a prius if they want to ship volume. Its best to just accept that any money tied up in Tesla is already lost.

      Don’t disagree. Probably the closest analogue to Tesla at moment is Porsche, who sell about 250k cars a year, and profit about $15k per car (~3billion Euros/year profit), they are probably valued (though part of volkswagen group) at >20x profit which would be $60billion or more.
      
      Teardowns of Tesla cars currently suggest similar profit levels once they get through their production ramp up issues on model 3, but they will soon be undercut by cheaper mass production specialist car companies like toyota who only make about $1k profit per car (or make out like bandits on parts and service, cars might be a loss-leader).

        Yeah thats a more realistica analouge UN, I just did a 4 second check, turns out VW+Preference shares are about 160, using their last years profit its an earnings multiple of 11, so if they are making 15K per car and selling 250K then its more like 25bn.
        
        But it seems awfully high. I don’t think EVs are anywhere near having such sales volume and profitability anytime soon, especially on the lower end model 3s, sure load it with options and I can see there being that much profit in it, but do that and the model 3 practically doubles in price. And sure production costs can come down, I think that EVs will still be a premium (cost wise) option in 10 years time.
        
        So I think your best assumption would be to look at something like Porsche in the short-medium term, and then look at something like BMW in the longer term (as Ev tech comes down in price) because a BMW 2 Liter sedan costs about 2x a comparable Toyota Camry. But I actually suspect their comps are being done looking at someone like VW. And by the time you do this Telsa is not a 10bn dollar company…
        
        Your absoloutely right, by the time EVs are mass market if that ever happens mass market companies like Toyota and Hyundai and by that time dozens of chinese automakers will all come in and be willing to ship millions of cars at sub 1k profits. And makeup for it on floor mats and services and other things..

    DJ, any of these people can do just that, the Israelis will usually happily allow cargos through that they have freedom to inspect. This whole campaign is to push for uninspected “humanitarian” aid cargos. And that is purely so Hamas can smuggle weapons and related items in.

If Peters has something on him wind him up by repeating the statement or get a MP to do it under Parliamentry Priveledge just like Peters has done in the past. If it is a criminal act to do with himself he shouldn’t be in the top job for National and if it is about the Todd Barclay saga call his bluff because most voter are sick of Peters childish games.

  It’s not just the total number. Other factors are important.
  For example, is the NZ demographic profile a triangle with lots of young (healthy tax payers) or an inverted triangle with lots of elderly?
  Secondly, is the population distributed evenly or concentrated into Auckland?
  Thirdly, do the newcomers want to become like Kiwis or do they really want to set up enclaves of their old country here?
  The list goes on.
  The absolute number is not really the issue.

    The “writer in the print media” going on about the size of Simon Bridge’s feet is the idiot who has bored shitless Stuff newspaper readers for the last few weeks.
    
    He has been going on, and on, and fucking on, about how he’s taken a year off working for a newspaper so that he can study Maori full time.
    
    This guy asserted in his latest slab that Bridges took size 7 shoes and strongly implied that somehow we should think this is as significant.
    
    According to the web site below size 7 would be about average for a man 5ft 7in (170cm) in height. Another web source tells me the average height for an NZ male is 5ft 9½in (177cm).
    
    The Stuff bore was out to have a crack at Bridges, whom he seems to think should take a year off politics to learn Maori language. Both men are part-Maori.
    
    Do Maori have bigger feet than whites? If so, was the bore trying to suggest that by feet size he is more Maori than Simon Bridges?
    
    No wonder fewer and fewer people are subscribing to Stuff newspapers.

Red Radio this morning was so full of fake news one begins to worry the “reporters” all had a long weekend and the monkeys typed the news.
First a University idiot who did reseach to find out that people with more expenses houses make more extensive claims. That the temperature is 1% warmer and that storm are 16%, 17% aah 20% bigger and that “MORE MONEY IS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH”
That an idiot from the Unite Union has been arrested in Israel for being on board a fishing boat trying to get to Gazza. Seems NZ is the only country running this story. Could not find this story anywhere (BBC etc) evan the Israel haters. After a long search I found an press release from the IDF which said a fishing boat was stopped trying to break the blockade, was taken to an Israeli port and the “Nominal” amount of medical aid was shipped to Gazza.

Ray, Whaleoil and exposing an expose

The controversial blogger Whaleoil is taking up the cause of LifePod developer Sir Ray Avery – sending Newsroom an email accusing this site of an unethical hit-job on the former New Zealander of the Year through our extensive inquiry into his products, fundraising and record.

The blogger, Cameron Slater, has evidently been fed information on Avery’s email dealings with Newsroom over the past month – not from us – and the blogger promises “articles” which will show Newsroom has “decided to listen to claims of various low-rent ratbags that cast aspersions on a New Zealander of the Year and a person with an exemplary record of public service”.

The two-page email names a variety of people Slater thinks talked to Newsroom, including some unknown to us, and proceeds to make claims about their personal lives and accuse them of an assortment of behaviours which, even if true, would have had no bearing on the reports on Avery.

Slater seems excited to have been given a photograph of Avery with the former Prime Minister Helen Clark, a critic of Avery’s proposed fundraising concert at Eden Park which has since been cancelled. He claims she told a radio host she had never met Avery but his smoking gun photo is “photographic evidence that she has indeed met the man”.

Thank God we have renewal energy. Otherwise we would be in the same state as Oz. Highest power prices in the world. Wind farms falling over in high winds or not working in low/no winds. Exporting high grade coal to China and India who are building highly efficient low emission power plants whilst Oz knocks theirs down and refuses to build new ones. Wont do Nuke energy.
If we didnt have the rivers and damns we would be in the same or worse position.
This is the only thing I am grateful for as no power means no jobs no heating no cooking et al.
And that where Oz is very fast heading.
They and we should can Paris. The high emitters are going to keep on emitting whilst NZ who contribute 0.0002% of emission twists itself into knots trying to reduce to 0.0001% and wrecks the economy and peoples lives in the process.

Cabin temp control in hot or cold weather can use up to 3kW continuously regardless of speed, and can heavily impact range in city driving. And in really cold places batteries have to be kept warm or they lose huge amount of capacity.
        
        A decade ago EVs often had propane tanks for cabin heating, and some people are still doing this.

      All appliances manufacturers, washing machines, fridges, dishwashers, have made significant advances in reducing energy use.
      
      Many lights are now vastly more efficient LEDs.
      Heat pumps are 3-4 times more energy efficient than convection.
      
      Obviously thier opposition isn’t working. However it would be wrong to put one next door to an protected bird colony wouldn’t it. Just because they object doesn’t mean there wrong. More objections come from fruit cakes that don’t like them clutching to enviromental impacts as reasons. You mean the fake greenies.

    Meanwhile in reality Natural Gas CCS is actually far cleaner, because even if these eco-nutters aren’t lieing about the emissions of their ‘clean green’ forms of power outright they are definitely lieing by ommision.
    
    They don’t talk about the fact that solar produces most of its power mid-day, yet most power usage is during the morning and evening or that wind power is not always constant, in the Uk for instance during winter where most power is used their is realitively little wind. And where there is wind it is produced constantly.
    
    Meanwhile gas/coal produces only as much as is needed at the specific times of demand to meet demand, so if we moved to Solar/Wind we would need to build signficantly more capacity and we would need battery backups.
    
    The end result would be power which costs several fold more, it would mean all our industry and jobs going overseas, our economy collapsing, and it would put more Co2 in the air from the extra capacity built and the battery backups (as power produced mid day is largely wasted)..

      A generator cost the same in a wind turbine as it does in any other system. Coal etc requires continuos use of fossil fuels just to get it to the power plant and significant fossil fuel used to make infastructure.
      Renewables need no continuous pollution and waste energy just to operate let alone produce electricity.
      
      PV systems are linked directly to daytime operating commercial enterprise. As it is cheaper in these arrangements than grid supply these companies become more competitive, not less.
      
      As I linked earlier today, wind is the cheapest version of electricity generation. Yes it has offsetting costs and this is about 0.276 cents kW/h. A fraction of the $0.29 you get charged.
      
      Your arguments about CO2 costs for wind are completely absurd. As CO2 costs money that is transphered to the final product cost, your assertion that PV uses more CO2 is patently absurd as they, like wind are out competing, without subsidies, electricity produced with fossil fuels.
      
      The plight of those that refuse change, that deny progress, that oppose knowledge, is the plight you describe. The plight of a backward society.

        Sure put the PV on business roofs, currently the break even for a tesla solar roof is 2.5x that of Gas/nuclear power sold in some of the cheaper US states and in china. And that is PV without distribution costs. You lot seem to forget that every cent of cost for distribution in the power displaced by PV still needs to be paid for. And Kwh of peak production by gas/coal/nuclear for the evening/mornings (peak usage) still needs to be paid for.
        
        And all the ‘co2’ used to generate and sustain those methods are still used. But that is besides the point, PV produces more Co2 per KWh than the cleanest Natural Gas CCS…. So the anciliary issues only apply to wind which supposedly is ‘cleaner’ ignoring the ancilliary facts..
        
        Anyway its not my assertion, I cant assert facts, I can only observe them. look at the 2011 IPCC claims for Natural Gas CCS. These people are paid to produce climate change propaganda, so they should be a reliable source for those that believe in the propaganda.

        I said generator. The component attached to the, turbines, or reciprocating engine or steam turbine, or Stirling engine (reciprocating heat engines). It’s the bit that creates the electricity from momentum.
        
        You take the best gas CCS figure vs the worst PV figure and cliam victory. The best PV figure (it’s rapidly improving) vs the worst gas CCS figure and you loose badly.
        
        Gas CCS is restrained by the Carnot cycle. It is physically limited in efficiency.
        
        You make the claim of 60% efficiency for gas to electricity. Fine it’s multi staged etc. You also claim it’s 100% efficient directly as heat. Fine if you can capture 100% of the escaping gas temp.
        
        So if you use that 60% efficiency in a heat pump at 4 times effiency = 240% efficient. If you use gas directly for heating a home it’s the wrong way to use it.
        Why are you saying PV uses more CO2, that’s just doesn’t make sense. EG electricity made by wind, drives EV bulldozers, gets raw materials, puts on EV train. Processed in factory using PV on roof and wind mills. Final product finished. 0.000 grams of CO2. Driven to site on EV vehicle. Installed. Provides power for daytime operating Buisiness.
        
        That’s to the extreme. But where’s the CO2? Presently thier is some but any CO2 used in making PV will be contained in its price. It inherently must be small. You can’t say it’s more because the cost is the same or less than gas systems that produce enormous quantities of CO2.
        
        Buy the way how do you reconcile sun following concentrators using reciprocating (Stirling) engines? No CO2 right. No germanium, no silicon purification.
        
        Fossils fuels still have a role to play. Stop panicking at the thought of modern tech outperforming and creating a more modern electric network and supporting modern society. If your worried, sell your gas and oil company shares now before they get left behind.

    DigNAP Solar is higher per KWh for Co2 (which isn’t pollution its plant food) than Natural Gas CCS, and solar produces only during the mid-day when people are at work using little power.
    
    So you need either battery backup or concentrated solar power storage system. Now costs rise substantially. Clean gas is as low as 4cents kwh to the door in USA.

        No modern CCS Gas is 65, read the 2011 IPCC claims, they are paid to create climate alarmist propaganda. They then revised it up in 2014 50%… These guys play it fast and loose with the facts and objective reality. They were caught twice, hundreds of thousands of emails where they were faking all their ‘science’.
        
        Anyway PV is between 60-180 at its worse for household/utility scales before battery and gas/coal backups are taken into account. Meaning the best gas is better than the worst PV. The difference is not so big as people claim.
        
        And this is from the IPCC itself, straight out of the devils mouth. If the devil is saying CCS Gas is virtually as ‘clean’ as PV (by their absurd metrics which don’t include ancillary effects) then that is an absoloute worse case scenario. Its probably better. They are probably exagerating how ‘dirty’ CCS Gas is and lieing about how ‘clean’ PV is..

      Yes you should be skeptical of ‘experts’ the ‘experts’ at the IPCC have been caught falsifying data, they are no more than activists and activism is just a euphenism for extremism.
      
      No this whole ‘green power’ thing is pretty ridiculous, PV is dirtier than CCS Gas, and wind power requires more CO2 emmisions when backups are considered.
      
      Raw gas for heating is also very efficent, modern power plants are only about 50-60% efficent. Burning gas for heat is 100% efficent and has no transmission loss. Try to explain to an econutter that a gas heater in winter outputs less Co2 than a PV panel… Not going to get you anywhere.

  There has been almost no work on demand-side loads (or nobody wants to pay for it) or who pays for spinning reserve.
  Batteries for mains scale power is ludicrously expensive. Paybacks are 40 to 50 years for a battery that last for 10 years tops.
  A Tesla battery ($8000 -$10,000) holds $1-70 of retail priced electricity.

      Uhm you realise that power prices are as low as 4 cents a kwh in USA and China. The break even price for a Tesla Solar Roof cladding PV systems is 10 cents.
      
      And that solar roof option doesnt take into account distribution costs. Solar actually produces more C02 per kwh than the lower estimates of Natural Gas CCS. And Gas CCS is only going to come down as technology improves.

        Yeah CCS is ~60 and ‘dirty’ PV is higer, average pv is about the same. Anyway NZ comercial power per KWh is about 7cents, US cents. And if we just look at per kwh charges (which is deceptive) then most providers are charging ~17nzd cents kwh.
        
        The real killer in NZ is the retail margins, the state owned distribution charges, and the privately owned, ex state local distribution monopolies. There are two providers now which are online only, low cost providers that charge their retail customers cost + %markup. Its a very cost effective way to buy electricity and drasticly decreases cost.
        
        The big driver of cost in NZ is government, I suspect that wholesale prices would be much lower with less regulatory barriers to market entry, and distribution costs lower with less regulation, and if it were treated like a public monopoly.
        
        In the states electricity is a tad below our pricing for commercial on average, so we actually have pretty ‘competitive’ pricing. In AUS people are paying .41AUD per KWh, they are actually one of the highest in the oecd. Suffice to say in china companies don’t pay as much for electricity as NZ.. Or as the US…
        
        They pay about 4cents a kwh.

  I have never met anyone who is anti renewables. I have met many who are anti-subsidies for renewables.
  
  PV is now competitive without subsidy in some locales (not northern Europe or USA), and wind in some locations is also competitive without subsidy. But mostly they both still need a lot of subsidies to compete with cheaper forms of generation.
  
  Given how small NZ, and our irrelevance to global learning-curves the sensible economic choice is to wait another 5-15 years until other countries have bought costs down sufficiently for us to install non-subsidised PV in NZ, or develop cheaper ways of getting PV on houses (with new cheap $150/kWh batteries it could undercut retail electricity prices)

    I am anti-renewable, the term is BS. Its made up BS UN, the same sort of BS as calling hydrocarbons fossil fuel, i.e. dinosaur bones.
    
    What they call ‘renewable’ is no more than a tertiary byproduct of the solar systems largest nuclear reactor, which produces heat and light, and the light radiates out to our planet and creates heat which generates weather patterns, the wind and the the solar power… Then there is tidal, that is a tertiary byproduct of the moons gravitational effects on the earth as it orbits around our planet.
    
    Then we go on to fossil fuels, well turns out there were dinosaurs (sarcasm) on the saturns moon ‘titan’ where it rains Hydorcarbons (the real name for ‘fossil fuels’). No ‘oil’ is produced abiogenicly deep in the earths crust from its base components under enormous preassure and heat and circulates through the crust.
    
    PV doesn’t even output less co2 per kwh compared to CCS Gas (even ignoring storage costs), and Widpower outputs more Co2 when storage and additional output, distribution losses etc..etc.. are taken into account.
    
    The left and its eco-nutters are just anti-science mate. There entire world view is wrong, their just a bunch of deluded hippies.

        Well that seems a bit low, I know that in some cases PV can come close to the Total Lifecycle Cost TLC of Gas but it is all highly subjective and starts breaking down outside of niche cases where the environment, demand for energy and supply of PV is all at the right level.
        
        Undoubtedly PV has a place in the future of electric production, but the costs to displace Hydorcarbons would be too much. That article you mentioned cited hypothetical costs of some 2.7cents or thereabouts a kw/h, that is a huge increase over the wholesale production costs of the best Gas/Coal that is available.
        
        And yeah same with wind, that place in mexico is one of some arbitrary and to us indeterminate number of goldilocks zones, just like PV where everything lines up perfectly.
        
        In many other places like the UK for instance the air is often still in winter when they want to use lots of electricity, so windpower is not suitable, in Wellington its likely too windy, when it’s ‘too windy’ the wind turbines actually shut down to prevent them overloading and being destroyed.
        
        But the thing about gas/coal is you can build them almost anywhere, most people live within 100-200km of the coast, and its quiet easy to ship in deliveries of many thousands of tonnes of coal/gas. And even further in land as the states prove its quiet economical to ship coal via rail.
        
        So whether its shipping in coal/gas, local production, or trasmissioning the power from somewhere more convenient to produce there is almost no where that coal/gas doesn’t make sense. There is however unfortunately many places that PV doesnt.
        
        PV is pretty much the ultimate form of ideal electricity, because its completely decentralized, you can buy it in tiny increments, everyone could theoretically be independent, and it would be litterally the coolest thing ever if it could work like that. Unfortunately the cost gets in the way.

        I think the future for renewables is bright, but not at high latitudes. We won’t be using fossil fuels for power much in 200 years, will be some blend of PV, wind and fission or fusion power. I don’t think there is any urgency in rushing the change, and it is good that we have options and that PV is getting to be so price competitive.

        Babies are simple if you know the secrets. Just like crate training dogs. I’m not ‘opining’, but I am speaking from experience. Once the baby gets back to birth weight then they are well capable of sleeping through the night.
        If you are feeding from the titty then you pump in the morning and give them the morning milk last thing at night and it will knock them out like a sailor on rum. If you’re feeding on formula then start them on solids earlier and they will be flat out like a flounder by 8pm at night. You don’t even have to make a conscious decision. #3 was helping himself to fish and chips at eleven weeks at Island Bay. Boat had well and truly sailed by then. There was no more feeding him on that supermarket shite. Within a week he was gobbing back a cheeseburger.

If the allegations in this article are true, it’s a devastating blow to Charter Schools and to Simon Bridges.

I’m a supporter of the Charter Schools concept. But any school teaching Creationism in a science class needs to be shut down and any teacher presenting it in a science class needs to lose their practising licence.

If Bridges’ sister is indeed doing this, it’s reasonable to ask if Simon shares her views. If he does that is a massive blow to the National party and his leadership.

I am going to be fascinated on what is sure to be a backroom Parliamentary stoush after Big Gerry accused Peters of being drunk in the House this afternoon. Even Trev was taken aback but interestingly he didn’t make Gerry withdraw and apologise. Peters had been outstandingly insulting to Simon Bridges.

Trev also supported Nick Smith and told Labour MPs that he was disappointed in their lack of transparency.

    I’ll add it is customary for a retiring speaker to receive a knighthood. National even did so for Margaret Wilson despite her deeply partisan approach.
    
    Rather than take the principled stand as you suggest, I expect National will recommend Trevor Mallard for a knighthood when next in office.
    
    In my opinion this is absolutely inappropriate. In fact I’d go so far as to say unconscionable.

        The Russians didn’t get much choice about going to war, you will recall, K-Realityczech.
        
        They had this peace deal with Hitler, but Adolf launched the biggest invasion in history with Operation Barbarossa. Four million German and other Axis troops hit the Soviet Union at once, at the same time all but wiping out the Soviet Air Force – on the ground.
        
        It says much for the guts and toughness of the Russian people that they were able to come back from this, the greatest of all king hits.

      This work of Solzhenitsyn looks flaky, and seems to have been only partly translated into English.
      
      Some of the best anti-Soviet writers have become flaky towards the end of their lives. For example, Alexander Zinoviev, a fine satirist (and logician) who blasted the Soviet bureaucracy and was exiled, at the end of his life championed the Soviet Union, calling its collapse a catastrophe.

In the United States, the two groups that most ardently support Israel are Jews and evangelical and fundamentalist Christians. Jewish support is easy to explain, but why should certain Christians, most of them politically quite conservative, be so devoted to Israel? There is a second puzzle: despite their support for a Jewish state, evangelical and fundamentalist Christians are disliked by many Jews.

    Yes and many Jews are atheists. Jews are a bit stuck up and full of themselves, but the garden variety Jew is okay. The real problem ones are the religious nuts and the zionists. A bit like other religions I guess.

  I think, Lance, that he has an Arab in his family tree. ❗Kea-Realityczech❗ has given hints of this in posts, and has specifically said it wasn’t a Lebanese.
  
  So perhaps Syrian is a good bet, or maybe Palestinian.
  
  His paranoia about Jews and Israel is thus sad: he’s probably a distant cousin.
