“The chairman of Te Rūnanga Ā Iwi o Ngāpuhi, and co-leader of Tūhoronuku, Rāniera Tau wants $1.5bil to settle the Ngāpuhi Treaty claim.

This comes as the embroiled iwi leader defends allegations of mismanagement of tribal assets.

Despite the claims he says he will not step down from his position.

For the first time, the co-chair of Tūhoronuku, and chair of Te Rūnanga Ā Iwi o Ngāpuhi Rāniera Tau has given the sum he is wanting to settle the Ngāpuhi Treaty settlement.

“I’ll say that it’s worth up to at least $1.5bil in value” Tau says exclusively to Te Kāea’s Northland regional correspondent, Raniera Harrison.

Tau, who was convicted in 2016 after being found with five dead kererū by Department of Conservation staff at Invercargill Airport, says he is focused on setting up a new post settlement entity to receive the Ngāpuhi Treaty settlement.

“We’ll set up a group and present them to the people to see whether or not they support them. At the end, the old adage remains, that Ngāpuhi will speak for itself.”

Leadership from both Tūhoronuku, including Hōne Sadler and Te Kotahitanga o Ngā Hapū co-chairs Pita Tipene and Rudy Taylor will meet formally for the sixth time with Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little in Wellington on Saturday to discuss the settlement.

Tau says there are a few outstanding issues on the table.

“Whether we find solutions for what we are after at this meeting or not, we will be calling a Ngāpuhi-wide meeting to discuss how we want to move forward.”

The topic has long been discussed and widely accepted as being the biggest Treaty settlement to date.

Tau says it is very close to happening.

“That $1.5 billion? That’s only the beginning for Ngāpuhi.”

An estimated 50 protestors took to the streets of Kaikohe yesterday demanading greater transparency in Te Rūnanga Ā Iwi o Ngāpuhi tribal leadership structure.

“They’re under the assumption that they can get me to stand down? Get it right!” says Tau.

He adds that he will be in a better position after the sixth meeting with Little on Saturday to make further comment.”

  Is all this treaty claim money leading to favorable outcomes for iwi members?
  Has the iwi prepared a list of measurable targets that the claim money will be put towards? (Such as increasing the percentage of insulated homes, painting and repairing housing, reducing the incidence of smoking, etc.)
  Will the monies be held by an independent non-iwi trust to ensure accountability?
  The list goes on…
  
  Giving away free money (to improve “feelz”) without expecting any accountability will only encourage further demands for more money.
  
  Money should be used as a tool; not as a drug.

    As an aside, and concerning the ultimate fate of whatever monies might be received: Anecdotal evidence would indicate that the prevailing wisdom amongst Maori leadership (as received from ‘Financial Advisors’) is that whatever money might be forthcoming should be invested ‘For the greater good of the tribe’, since if it was distributed amongst members, inevitably some would immediately spend it all and become, once again, dependent on the state (notice, NOT tribe) for their necessities.
    
    Better to have the money earning and increasing the tribal assets…
    
    What is not so far mentioned is ‘At what point does said accumulated money be disbursed, by whom and to whom?’
    
    No-one seems prepared to tackle THAT particular issue and meanwhile the ‘Train rolls on.
    
    It’s an interesting example of both having one’s cake and being able to simultaneously eat it.

  Ngapuhi can’t expect more than Ngai Tahu or Tainui. Around $500 million in current terms. Sonny Tau must know this, so a claim for $1.5 billion is ludicrous.
  
  It is the sort of figure one would claim if you don’t want to settle. Plus like all othe claims the settlement has to be full and final. Not easy to achieve with Ngapuhi in its current state.
  
  Can Little do a deal in the next two years? It will be a challenge.
  
  Ngapuhi may have to wait till 2030 when a new generation of leaders actually ready to settle take charge. In fact maybe even 2040 on the 200th anniversary of the Treaty!

    Unfortunately it seems that whether the government is labour or national they both are quite comfortable for treaty claims to carry on in perpetuity. Like when will this ever be over? When will Maori interests say yes we have had enough apologies and we have been paid enough money and now we are settled?
    
    Given Ngapuhi claiming $1.5 billion I would say never. Because if they get anything like that figure other tribes will be back in for top ups.
    
    The government should close the book on claims. They should then settle the claims quickly and expeditiously and then the country can finally move on.

    Well I’d love to think you were right Mr Mapp. But most sane commentators would’ve discounted the possibility that the CoL would unilaterally decide to execute NZ’s oil industry on a whim and without even a skerrit of official advice or consultation.
    
    We’re seeing unprecedented levels of pork barrelling going on to keep the NZ First vote on the reservation – we all know that once you given in to any form of extortion, it only gets worse and worse.
    
    So I fear your moderate and progressive view on this issue may be coming from the wrong plane of existence to be relevant.

“The taniwha is awaiting another feed, this time regarding a proposed bypass on State Highway 3 from Awakino Gorge to Mount Messenger in Northern Taranaki.

To ensure trouble-free progress on the project, the New Zealand Land Transport Association has offered Ngati Tama a 120ha farm plus other cultural redress. That tribe is also asking that iwi be employed on this road job.

One other major land owner there is getting virtually nothing, according to a source in the area. There is pressure for equal compensation irrespective of skin colour.

Regional “relationships” director Parekawhia McLean should be reminded that if LTSA wants to give a farm to affected iwi they should be prepared to give a farm to the other affected landowners and asked, if not, why not?

McLean has been with the Transport Agency since September 2016 after five years as the chief executive officer of Waikato–Tainui/Te Whakakitenga o Waikato.”

  I was watching a program on Japan last night. They had a tea growing area that had amongst it a whole network of small turbines. So not only do the farmers earn money from tea at around $50 a kilo dried but they earn money from the windmills too.

  I don’t know enough of Australian history to comment on that, but I do know something about South African history.
  
  Before the whites ran South Africa, the country was a cesspit of civil war. Sure, European countries had civil wars and the Boer war in South Africa was a civil war, but the pre-colonial black population made it into an artform.
  
  The Mfecane was the last of these periods of genocide and that killed about half the population.
  
  Pol Pot got a similar result, but the Bantu managed to do it without any mechanised transport, guns and over a larger area.
  
  Just as the Roman Empire enforced Pax Romana , the Brits enforced Pax Britannica. That resulted in relative peace since then.
  
  Colonisation was the best thing that happened to Africa.

      Like some other countries in Africa, the Zimbabweans seem to be slowly realising that farms don’t grow food by themselves but need careful management by skilled farmers.
      
      Zim seems to be giving back some land to whites to start farming again. I’d be hesitant to try though because, most likely, there will be another swing to communism and lad grabbing in ten years or so.
      
      Unfortunately for South Africa, things will have to get worse and hit bottom before they get better…. if it ever does get better. Nowhere else in Africa has really got better, so why should SA?

  In ‘uncivilized’ or pre-state cultures (like hunter gathers or primitive agricultural) where the land is relatively fecund (people not continually struggling to scrape together enough food to eat to survive winter etc) death rates from warfare and homicide often run at about 0.5-2% per year. In colonised countries it would generally be <0.05% per year. In western world it approaches .001% per year.
  
  Colonialism was generally awesome for the standard of living of the colonised. Excepting Belgians. They were complete monsters.

  I was once working on some cameras at Mt Eden Prison. Sone prisoners had won the right to partly opening windows (idiotic court ruling). As a result everytime we needed to access the exterior of a wing it had to be emptied because the prisoners will throw all kind of shit on anyone below the windows.

If Jacinda is a “Political Superstar”, what is Key? A Political God?

Jacinda – gets gifted a list seat cause she can’t win one on her own. Then gets gifted one of the safest Labour seats in the country. After standing down from Deputy Leader cause of panic attacks, she gets the leadership 2 months out from the election. Just long enough so its all honeymoon.

She has the most devoted, bias media I think I’ve ever seen in this country just jerking itself off whenever she utters a garbage slogan.

She goes into debates where Hosking has been de-knackered by the media party so he never actually pulls her up on anything.

Come election night, she loses.

Then spends the next weeks saying “yes Winston, whatever you want. you want to be PM? sure, you have the mandate of the people! with your 5.2% or whatever it was”.

Then this Political Superstar gets into office and just rules over fuck up after fuck up as our dollar plunges, business confidence plummets, national strikes start etc etc

Now how the fuck is that a political superstar?????

Who only looks at the top line when assessing performance?

eg Dimes business jumps 30% in turnover for the year! Dime must be a Business Superstar!!! oh wait, it turns out he drastically overpaid for another small business that increased his turnover while dropping all profitability and making his company take a huge hit in customer confidence.

but that one number is up! SUPERSTAR!

  I read various international news media and hard not to notice the same liberal issues being played out in several countries. I don’t think it is a coincidence and getting Jacinda into power in NZ is seen as a powerful international marker for the Liberals. It would be interesting to know the power base behind these people. Legalise pot, euthanasia, open up borders, LGBT, abortion reform, ban Lauren Southern etc. The curious one for me is that we have an NZ Government strongly advocating for open borders in the US, UK and Australia but not exactly keen on the concept here.

  National went from ~46% August 1st to 44.5% election night. Almost no change.
  
  Reality is that Ardern took about 1-2% off National during her media-pumped honeymoon. But gained massively from Greens stupidity. She’s no rockstar. It was always about Winston’s fondness for baubles, nothing else significant occurred at the election.

Government and council have agreed that denser inner city housing is vital to making a success of the earthquake rebuild. Yet despite inking a deal with Fletcher to build nearly 1000 homes back in 2015, the first 20 properties won’t be finished until late this year.

The buyers just don’t seem to be there for them. And so the East Frame development has been uphill all the way.

However, take the road half an hour out of town to Lincoln and the story is the opposite. This once sleepy village has exploded with subdivisions. Its residential footprint is now 10 times what it was 20 years ago.

Man changes gender on ID to get cheaper car insurance.

A 23-year-old driver has legally changed his gender so he could significantly reduce his car insurance premium.

The Canadian man, who is identified as David, was fed up with paying extraordinary prices so decided to alter the gender on his birth certificate and driver’s license.

He told CBC News he’s saved more than $1,100 to date since making the change.

“I’m a man, 100 per cent. Legally, I’m a woman,” David said.

“I did it for cheaper car insurance. I didn’t feel like getting screwed over anymore.

“It was pretty simple. I just basically asked for it and told (the doctor) that I identify as a woman, or I’d like to identify as a woman, and he wrote me the letter I wanted.”

He sent the letter off to the government registration department and within three weeks he received a new birth certificate indicating his gender as female.

With all the required documentation, David then changed his driver’s license, allowing him to take out the cheaper insurance policy as a woman.

Strangely, the trans community isn’t happy about this!

David’s gender stunt has caused an uproar in the transgender community in Canada, with many believing his actions are hurting those who struggle with identity issues.

David says he didn’t mean any disrespect to the trans community, he just wanted a better rate on insurance.

But his excuse doesn’t fly with trans woman Marini Panas, who believes the damage is already done.

Whether he says, ‘I didn’t mean to do harm to the trans community,’ is irrelevant because the impact is very real to a community that is already quite vulnerable,” she said.

“And he lied, so that really speaks to this person’s integrity. I certainly would question this person’s motives. It ends up being a big stunt.”

I think his motives are quite plain – cheaper insurance!

Anyway, isn’t it about FEELZ nowadays? Maybe he FEELZ that he drives just as safely as any woman … therefore he is as good as a woman … therefore he IS a woman!

Makes perfect sense to me.

If enough people follow this man in putting in a gender not backed up by genetics, then hopefully insurance companies will classify transgender men as men regardless of what they claim, rather than penalising all women for a minority of people that want genetics to be ignored.

In May she wanted to join a women’s gym as she doesn’t feel safe in a gym with male clients. The gym said, unsurprisingly, that’s not good enough. Actually they didn’t put it like that; what they said was that all transgendered persons must have a medically-recognised sexual reassignment surgery prior to using the gym.
    
    And here’s the bit that does my head in – Penelopy is quoted as saying “How can a gym just be solely women, and what grounds do they accept women on?”
    
    Umm … didn’t you just say that you wanted to join a WOMAN’S GYM as you don’t feel safe in a gym with male clients? And now you say, how can a gym be exclusive to women only?
    
    Sorry, I back the gym on this one. Presumably they want to provide an environment where women feel comfortable, and for some women that means working out without men around to leer. I get that. If the gym allows someone to join in who is physically a man but says “Oh, but really I’m a woman” then I suspect their membership of ACTUAL women would plummet.

Made a fatal error and heard talkback radio this morning for 10 mins. Heather DPA was berating National for the painful death many suffer due to outdated cannabis laws.
Apparently the Labour bill is terrible and Nats are responsible for not fixing it.
I thought Labour was in govt but apparently National are still responsible for the quality of legislation being passed.
Oh, and Winston has been a stellar pm. Multiple strikes, removing health targets, declining confidence, etc all swept under carpet now and its all ok.
I wonder if Barry and Heather are on some form of retainer.

  I particularly liked her showing her progressive credentials on the cannabis issue by saying that she didn’t think it right that people should be imprisoned for cannabis possession. Of course, they aren’t. I defy her to find anyone in prison for possession alone (as distinct from a short lag imposed along with a longer one for other offending.
  The proviso to s7(2) Misuse of Drugs Act says, and has since about 1980:
  “where any person is convicted of an offence against subsection (1) relating only to a Class C controlled drug and is liable to a penalty under paragraph (b), the Judge or District Court Judge shall not impose a custodial sentence (being a sentence under which a person is liable to be detained in a prison within the meaning of the Corrections Act 2004) unless, by reason of the offender’s previous convictions or of any exceptional circumstances relating to the offence or the offender, the Judge or District Court Judge is of the opinion that such a sentence should be imposed.”
  So her current opinion is what Parliament’s was about the time she was born. Wow!!. That’s progressive!
