    Les Miserables is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I couldn’t see how a two hour flick could possibly do it justice so, even though I bought the DVD it sits on the shelf unwatched.

On TVNZ’s ‘One News’ Friday 13th the bulletin led with Simon Dallow introducing Trump visiting the UK (quoting) ‘Where he’s making headlines for all the wrong reasons’

Editorially, the TVNZ newsroom is partisan. Why say that? Why not say he’s making headlines for all the right reasons?

Standard practice as the kiwis get brainwashed into Trump = Evil.

Trump’s comments in the UK remind me of this great scene from the classic movie ‘Remains of the Day’ starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Christopher Reeve, where Reeve’s character (a US Congressman who visits the UK shortly before WW2) describes the British as ‘amateurs’

  Everything Trump has said on his UK visit is perfectly reasonable:
  1. “soft” Brexit will make it hard for the UK to negotiate free trade deals with the US (and anyone else for that matter)
  2. The UK government is in turmoil
  3. Mass immigration is undermining British culture.
  4. London is run by a moron who facilitates crime and terrorism and is no longer the city it once was.
  
  The Brits need to hear it.

  If there is no God, then no man is in a position to force his opinion of morality upon another. One man’s subjective view of morality is equal to another man’s equally subjective view of morality. Thus, there is no reason to believe in any morality just because another man tells you that it is good.
  
  It would take an authority that was above having only a subjective view of morality to legislate that morality. God’s view of morality is objective, not subjective.

      I would argue its not morality but love that is more powwrful proof for the existence of God. Love is not natural, in fact it goes against the concepts of survival of the fittest etc in nature. Only humans show true love ( and I am not talking about sexual attraction or feeling in “Love”), ie putting someone else’s wellbeing above your own even to the point of dying for this. One could then argue that absolute love is a definition of God.

      But the fact that most people believe that there is a right and wrong, a “real morality” as C.S Lewis liked to say, points to there being a real morality maker.
      
      Other people wrote to me saying ‘Isn’t what you call the Moral Law just a social convention, something that is put into us by education?’ I think there is a misunderstanding here. The people who ask that question are usually taking it for granted that if we have learned a thing from parents and teachers, then that thing must be merely a human invention. But, of course, that is not so. We all learned the multiplication table at school. A child who grew up alone on a desert island would not know it. But surely it does not follow that the multiplication table is simply a human convention, something human beings made up for themselves and might have made different if they had liked? I fully agree that we learn the Rule of Decent Behaviour from parents and teachers, and friends and books, as we learn everything else. But some of the things we learn are mere conventions which might have been different – we learn to keep to the left of the road, but it might just as well have been the rule to keep to the right – and others of them, like mathematics, are real truths. The questions is to which class the Law of Human Nature belongs.
      
      There are two reasons for saying it belongs to the same class as mathematics. The first is, as I said in the first chapter, that though there are differences between the moral ideas of one time or country and those of another, the differences are not really very great – not nearly so great as most people imagine – and you can recognize the same lay running through them all: whereas mere conventions, like the rule of the road of the kinds or clothes people wear, may differ to any extent. The other reason is this. When you think about these differences between the morality of one people and another, do you think that the morality of one people is ever better or worse than that of another? Have any of the changes been improvements? If not, then of course there could never be any moral progress. Progress means not just changing, but changing for the better. If no set of moral ideas were truer or better than any other, there would be no sense in preferring civilized morality to savage morality, or Christian morality to Nazi morality. In fact, of course, we all do believe that some moralities are better than others. We do believe that some of the people who tried to change the moral ideas of their own age were what we would call Reformers of Pioneers – people who understood morality better than their neighbors did. Very well then. The moment you say that one set of moral ideas can be better than another, you are, in fact, measuring them both by a standard, saying that one of them conforms to that standard more nearly than the other. But the standard that measures two things is something different from either. You are, in fact, comparing them both with some Real Morality, admitting that there is such a thing as a real Right, independent of what people think, and that some people’s ideas get nearer to that real Right than others. Or put it this way. If your moral ideas can be truer, and those of the Nazis less true, there must be something – some Real Morality – for them to be true about. The reason why your idea of New York can be truer or less true than mine is that New York is a real place, existing quite apart from what either of us thinks. If when each of us said ‘New York’ each means merely ‘The town I am imagining in my own head’, how could one of us have truer ideas than the other? There would be no question of truth or falsehood at all. In the same way, if the Rule of Decent Behaviour meant simply ‘whatever each nation happens to approve’, there would be no sense in saying that any one nation had even been more correct in its approval than any other; no sense in saying that the world would ever grow morally better or morally worse.
      
      I conclude then, that though the difference between people’s ideas of Decent Behaviour often make you suspect that there is no real natural Law of Behaviour at all, yet the things we are bound to think about these differences really prove just the opposite.

        Maybe, maybe not, at least in the sense of gods as morality makers. Those who believe in a natural moral law (not me) do so without gods. Lewis’s argument is weak: his claim of a ‘real morality’ is undermined by his own last paragraph and the weak New York analogy.
        
        Anyone who wants to argue that gods are the source of morality needs to show:
        1) a god exists;
        2) The moral commands or character attributed to that god are actually god’s rather than human fabrications;
        3) God’s commands are are good.
        
        Good luck with all that.
        
        If humans are fallen, defective beings, how do they know God and his/her commands are perfect?
        
        Meanwhile, I am out of here for several hours, in the words of Voltaire, to tend my garden.

    Morality is a system of rules for social interaction between individually limited humans (with pressures of fertility control and exceedingly long child raising process) arrived at through evolutionary processes to allow them to out-compete alternative systems. Essentially game theory in action. Chimps develop similar rules. No God except as a post-hoc rationalisation

  Good link, back about 13/14 years ago I did postgraduate study in business, mostly in Finance and Economics. The interesting thing was the only females in those classes (and there was only a few) were foreign, mainly Chinese with one Papua New Guinean (or Fijian) woman on a NZ (Hulun Cluck) scholarship. The rest were males (mostly Chinese). And the Chinese girls all wanted to go into real estate. However (local) females could be found in Marketing and some Business management classes. At this time the woman in management movement was starting to gain traction but I thought to myself at the time, “How on earth can females expect good jobs if none of them do accounting, economics, finance or the business math classes.” Having a 50/50 split is dangerous, the pool for starters isn’t 50/50 and most are unlikely to be properly trained. And I for one actually want females to succeed in business. We need more capitalist women.

  T N,unfortunately most of what Repco sell is shit, I’m in this business as a user of auto parts and if you want quality you must buy from the cars manufacturer and the parts must be wrapped or boxed with the manufacturers trade marks..

    Let’s say your wife is 16.. then you are in a legal relationship with her defined under NZs Marriage Act. You can give her pressies and have sex with her.
    You can’t hire her out to work as a prostitute until she’s 18.
    
    This chap wasn’t married to the 16 year old.
    He fell foul of the Prostitution Reform Act.
    
    Under the Prostitution Reform Act, “no person may enter into a contract or other arrangement under which a person under 18 years of age is to provide commercial sexual services to or for that person or another person”.

There are comments wanting increased immigration for economic growth.
Population increase, increases demand on land use and resources, water, electricity, food, schooling, hospitals,justice, etc etc.
Population growth props up the housing market and building industry.
Population growth supports retail, services growth.
Etc, etc.

So population growth has enormous vested interest generally.

But one group is not, on far to many occasions a consential, or willing, or even aware they are participants in that population growth.

Around 22400 men each year have a baby that they never consented to having. Some will happily accept thier fate but many do not.

What is the costs to society of this issue.
Helen Clark (a feminist) banned discusion or publication of information on the raw data but it can be assumed that at least 1/4 of male suicides are heavily influenced by this issue.
Around 2000 men leave NZ each year never to return due to the lifelong effects of Child Support being forced on them. This causes an annual GDP loss of around $2 billion. Plus CS is proven to stagnate, limit, or cause many to drop out of the workforce. It’s an failed socially distructive idea.

A significant proportion of DV is caused by relationships forced on the male by conception that they never consented to. This also causes murders of women and children. Results include law inforcement costs, social services costs, prison costs, child developement failures, drug dependancy.
Easy access to the DPB as a career choice for women and Lesbians. It’s easy for women to get a random male to have sex. It’s easy to lie about being on the pill. It’s easy with stupefying (drugs, alcohol) to get males to have sex without using condoms, using I’m the pill lie, or I’ll take the morning after pill lie. This career choice costs us billions and billions more in the Statisticaly underperforming children they raise.

There is a easy solution to significantly lower those negative and costly outcomes of non consential conception. Give the victim the ability to protect themselves.
Those that benifit from population growth, and the side effects benefactors of non consential pregnancies, and ironically Feminists hate the idea of males having control over thier bodies and the ability of females to treat men as slaves.

But it is going to happen. A solution healthier, safer, and more effective, exists.

Sadly even though the solution will be soon available our Feminist Government will steadfastly ban this product.

It’s been an odd week. For the second time in seven days, I find myself agreeing with Idiot/Savant at No Right Turn:

The Minister for Open Government, yet again

Clare Curran attended a secret meeting with Google and refused to take notes about it:

At least two Cabinet ministers attended a dinner at an exclusive club hosted by Google’s top lawyer under secretive “Chatham House” rules, but made no notes of what was discussed.

National open government spokesman Nick Smith blasted their attendance, accusing Labour of hypocrisy.

Google’s chief counsel, Kent Walker, hosted the dinner at the capital’s swanky Wellington Club for invited guests who included Justice Minister Andrew Little, Open Government Minister Clare Curran and top public servants and lawyers.

Walker’s visit came at a time when the world’s fifth largest company faces the possibility of additional regulation in the areas of tax, privacy and competition policy.

Little said in a letter sent in response to an Official Information Act request that he didn’t generate any notes or memos from the event. A spokeswoman for Curran said she hadn’t either.

In which case, they should have generated them in response to the request. The Ministers attended in an official capacity, so any information that resulted is official information. And that includes information in Ministers’ heads. Their failure or refusal to take notes does not protect them from requests, only from poorly-worded ones (though arguably, that would violate the duty of assistance). As for the “Chatham House rule”, the government can not contract out of the OIA. It may be able to withhold information provided to them under such an express obligation of confidence, if the interest in receiving such information in future is not outweighed by the public interest. But they cannot withhold information they provided to others simply by declaring it “confidential”. The problem is that refusal to record gives deniability, so even if Smith successfully appeals this atrocity to the Ombudsman, Curran will be able to smile and say she remembers nothing – while providing Google with whatever secret backhanders it wants.

And that’s why refusal to keep records is bad: because it enables the government to lie to us, and it enables them to behave corruptly. Ministers who deliberately do so (and Curran is a serial offender) need to be held to account.

  I think there should be an immediate amendment to the Cabinet Manual: all ministers must take notes at any function which they attend.
  This is simply sensible for anyone. Myself, I always take notes when dining out, to ensure I have an accurate record of what was said should any legal proceedings ensue,

    If they are attending functions as a Minister, they have an obligation to provide information if requested. “I didn’t take notes”, “I can’t remember” and “But it was Chatham House rules” are NOT valid excuses, if you’re going to be the most open and transparent government ever.       But your are correct about my ‘official capacity’. I should have said that “I always take notes when dining out in my official capacity, to ensure I have an accurate record of what was said should any legal proceedings ensue”. Some of my colleagues raise their eyebrows at our functions, but I always tell them it is better to be safe than sorry, even if it means no one will talk to me at lunch or dinner anymore.

      The ironic thing is they are looking at drilling a new ventilation shaft into Pike River Mine. If the extra ventilation shaft/s had bee included originally instead of being vetoed by the Greens it may have avoided the inevitable build-up of methane and deadly explosion.

  I doubt they will get past the rock fall. I can’t see what the fuss is about walking to the rockfall. Moving through a rockfall of undetermined size will be expensive and dangerous, although doable. Once past that they will have to deal with the methane. Now that’s when things get interesting, although the existence of the mine means it can be done. I don’t believe anyone has a clue as to how much that will cost. If I was in charge I would be going in from the top to make it open cast and financially viable once again.

I have said all along, it was very sad, but the bodies should stay there and a nice memorial built.
But the people that designed and operated the mine should be prosecuted.

I am all for a much bigger population.
Providing they are all spread out over NZ and they are good, well educated, English speaking people, who want to stay and make a commitment to NZ.
Not wave after wave of third world pizza makers, and service station attendants.

A bigger population will make everything in NZ more viable and vibrant.

Prices, entertainment, business, roading etc etc.

  Statistically it’s possible…..maybe even probable. Ten years ago I would have applauded but now I’m not so sure that they still deserve the crap we traditionally showered on them. Two points:
  
  1) The garbage are serving finite sentences & are going to be released sooner or later. Parole at least allows some supervision initially.
  
  2) Since Graeme Burton murdered Karl Kuchenbecker in 2007 while on parole for a previous killing the Parole Board have got their shit together. Shane Jones $1billion dollar regional slush fund (for this year) is being spent mostly in Northland. With Winnie and Shane both coming from the far North is anyone surprised that Northland gets the biggest chunk of the $1b with 40% going to Northland projects, while the whole of the South Island is to receive only 1%! Taranaki to receive 14% and the rest I presume is still to be handed out. Shane assures us it is all kosher. Time will prove if he is right I guess.

  I’m not much of fan of Peters, Jones or their slush funds but it wouldn’t be hard to justify some Government spending in the Far North. The infrastructure is rooted & the housing situation would find equivalence in Bangladesh!
  
  I’m not certain that the injection of money without accountability is advisable but their 40% vs 1% for the South Island is understandable.

      Whatever happens it won’t be an instant fix Waikatogirl. There are a few point to consider:
      
      1) The area has few resources. The soil is poor & alternates between steep erodible hill country & flats better described as swamp.
      
      2) The Maori are fractured along tribal lines. From what I was reading in the Advocate a few weeks ago there are funds sitting awaiting allocation from the sale of cutting rights on Western pine plantations decades ago. There are three hapu involved & they still can’t decide who will represent them! Hence nothing happens which seems to be the default in the Far North.
      
      3) The roads & bridges are fucked.
      
      4) Since Maori affairs loans were shitcanned there’s been almost no new housing built yet the population increases.
      
      5) Meth.
      
      Shane & Winston don’t possess the wisdom of Solomon but that is what is required to pull the area out of the mess.

According to the British media it seems Donald Trump has insulted the Queen by not bowing properly or walking in the wrong place or something. Ridiculous. He is the US president. Have the Brits forgotten that the Americans won the war of independence. That means he isn’t obliged to play by their silly royal rules. Even ordinary Americans don’t bow or show obeisance to royalty. I’d expect him to be polite to the nice old lady, but if the British tried to tell him where to walk, how to stand, and how deep to bow I am not at all surprised that he ignored them.
