Avoiding meat and dairy is ‘single biggest way’ to reduce your impact on Earth
Biggest analysis to date reveals huge footprint of livestock – it provides just 18% of calories but takes up 83% of farmland

Avoiding meat and dairy products is the single biggest way to reduce your environmental impact on the planet, according to the scientists behind the most comprehensive analysis to date of the damage farming does to the planet.

The new research shows that without meat and dairy consumption, global farmland use could be reduced by more than 75% – an area equivalent to the US, China, European Union and Australia combined – and still feed the world. Loss of wild areas to agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of wildlife.

The new analysis shows that while meat and dairy provide just 18% of calories and 37% of protein, it uses the vast majority – 83% – of farmland and produces 60% of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions. Other recent research shows 86% of all land mammals are now livestock or humans. The scientists also found that even the very lowest impact meat and dairy products still cause much more environmental harm than the least sustainable vegetable and cereal growing.

The study, published in the journal Science*, created a huge dataset based on almost 40,000 farms in 119 countries and covering 40 food products that represent 90% of all that is eaten. It assessed the full impact of these foods, from farm to fork, on land use, climate change emissions, freshwater use and water pollution (eutrophication) and air pollution (acidification).

“A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use,” said Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, who led the research. “It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions.   Does that mean that the other 17% of farmland produces 40% of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions. That doesn’t seem very ‘green’ to me.

To make major decisions about our economic and energy future without going to Cabinet and without seeking advice from officials is deplorable. It really is an act of folly.

They didn’t even ask officials if this move would reduce greenhouse gas emissions! (it is far from self-evident that it will – in fact they’ll probably increase).

I have been studying this decision in Greg detail, and the more I look, it becomes clear just how serious the implications are. Sovereign risk for investors is now very high, especially after the similar unilateral and arbitrary decision to end mining on conservation land in the Speech from the Throne.

Many sectors are very concerned about what this “Government” will do next, and you really see that coming through in the poor results of the business confidence polls.

As a citizen, I am appalled and actually quite saddened. THIS IS NO WAY TO GOVERN.

    Yes, and I see buried in the Stuff story is information that is likely the government – sorry, collection of losers – will face legal action.
    Hardly surprising.
    Removing the right of an exploration company by decree – a company that may well have spend millions in the hope of gaining many more millions – is tantamount to the govt knocking on your door and saying you no longer have a right to live there.
    It is dictatorial, and the govt may yet pay a high price for its high-handed approach, and all with industry consultation or going through a Cabinet process.

      The different tack is an attempt ligitamise this group with dragging in Jim Bolger ahead of what might be some very acrimonious resistance to this roll back. With this and so many other contentious issues they heve created they must be very worried by the resistance being signalled by falling internal polls.     The Opposition can walk out of Parliament in protest triggering the interest of the Governor General. Apart from protest we are powerless. These situations have been resolved elsewhere by military intervention.
    MMP has gotten away on us. We have a govt empowered by unelected list members. At least MMP should be reviewed to prevent list members being qualified for cabinet and voting on confidence and supply.

  Was it always part of the Secret 33-38 page Coalition Agreement, or indeed some hastily cobbled together weasely backroom deal to keep the Greens onside …. the likes of hypocrites NZ First (and the Greens) always rally against? I think some sunlight needs to be applied here.

  I agree the whole issue and the way it was handled is appalling.
  However Woods is correct in that the initial decision was just to not have a block offer for the offshore areas this year.
  BUT they said it was a ban on all future off shore drilling which is something different in my non legal mind. They also said future onshore block offerings was up for review.
  I know that a group is working on going for a judicial review. It will all come down to what is in the Crown Minerals Act at the time of the decision and how that matches what they said (as opposed to what they actually did). I hope they get hammered in Court.

      Cabinet decisions cannot be reviewed in Court.
      The Govt decides. The Court interprets. The Ministers Act and that can be reviewed by a Court as to compliance with the enabling statute.
      This can be wet bus ticket country.
      That’s why the military tend to get involved at that stage when no one else has the power to deal with a rogue government.

        Apparently under the CM Act the Minister is obliged to promote development of the resource. Obviously Woods has not done that, but what are the consequences ? I do not know the answer to that.

Even as evidentiary proof of NO consultation, evaluation or the semblance of any factual reliable advise. Sure it is not retrospective but the extreme damage to sovereign risk, business confidence and the future energy security is a measurement they will avoid talking about. There was a bleeding heart story on TV3 News the other night about how most of the equipment in public playgrounds in South Auckland is in various states of disrepair whereas on the North Shore it’s in pretty good shape. But Auckland Council is committing more money to said equipment in the affluent North Shore than they are to the ‘needy’ kids in South Auckland.
Why didn’t the so-called ‘reporter’ ask the question why would the Council keep shoveling ratepayers’ money into areas where the equipment keeps getting wrecked and vandalised?

Every election we hear stories of poverty but last night for dinner we had a tray of 12 drumsticks $3.17 (from paknsave), 3 thighs $3.97 (fresh choice) a bag of pasta $1.40 (and it wasn’t budget) and sauce $1.80.         We currently have a household of 3 adults and 2 pre teens and regular visits from mokopuna in the weekend. We eat well. Plenty of fruit and veg in the house and baking most weekends. Average spenditure is $150 to $180 a week, depending on cleaning and hygiene products. But we have been known to trim that down to $100 on a tough week and an unexpected bill.
        
        Plenty of mince, sausages and chicken. Roast chicken carcasses are turned into soup by a slow cooker. Poverty of choices, is what I see too often.

    But Harkman the way prices are going that $10 will get you maybe I fish and half a scoop when fuel is $3.00 a litre. There are even greater savings if you opt for a skin on breast to slice into nice fillets and crumbed for Chicken McNabel and served with a good quality rice. Save the skins and cut up before deep frying for checharon making another crunchy snack for those frequent popcorn moments from the COL. People here often say “they are poor but they are happy” then knock up a feast from nothing at all. Have to fess up to getting lazy in the kitchen since her indoors can cook up a storm. Her and a guest dined on a local dish while I had our home made fish and chips with what can be a rarity imported 1000 Island Dressing. Rounded of with a double serve of strawberry pie that came back from Manila with her and lashings of whipped cream.

    One of our own local parks, Mountford…great kids playground. Clean, no graffiti, big open space. Close to the rugby, league, soccer, cricket and softball fields. Even had a special are for kids with disabilities. Toilet facilities right there. And plenty of parking close by.
    
    However!
    
    They pulled it down just over 6 months ago. Replaced with something closer to the main road, under a lot of trees. Limited parking, only close to one field. No toilets close by. Way to go Goff! Looking out for your communities!

e.g. if you have $100, then you adjust your spending so that you don’t spend more than the $100.
Apparently, if you are Labour, a budget is about going, how much do I want I spend… Now how do I get the money.

  So there is a Westminster tradition of the PM getting a knighthood or a baronet when retiring (hence Bill English). As Dick Quax pointed out earlier in the year, had he won in 1976 he would of likely received a knighthood. They also tend to give them ex All Blacks who hang around in Administration for years picking up a pay check. But yesterday’s list was dreadful, none we more deserving than Ferguson & McDonald, Buck, Bond & Murray, DC, Danyon Loader, Mahe or the ginger that was on Team NZ last year and won a rowing gold in London.

I’m a two tick Blue but after Simon Bridges interview on Red Radio this morning I cannot see National getting 50%+ votes at the next election with him in charge.       When Standards NZ set policy on use, testing companies were among assorted ~~parasites~~ interested parties who got themselves a seat at the table.
      
      The standard was developed by a committee of 21 experts across relevant industries in the public and private sector. These included sampling and testing operators, decontamination contractors, property investment and property management interests, the insurance sector, local authorities, public health authorities, and laboratories.         I’ve worked for the Ministry of Health. They will generally go very much on the side of caution. If they think there is the slightest risk in you eating this, breathing that, drinking this etc., they will give that advice. They don’t want to be responsible if years later someone develops an illness because of even low exposure to something.
        
        Science develops and sometimes it turns out to not have been the right advice, but at the time it was on the side of caution.
        
        Nobody, except maybe crappy testing firms who do dud lab work is to ‘blame’ here. And of course the people actually smoking P in state houses!

      The Ministry of Health issued guidelines relating to homes that had been used as meth labs, and specified that they should be cleaned to such a high standard that, afterwards, you shouldn’t be able to detect more than 0.5μg of meth.
      
      The question of whether it was HNZ who mistook that to mean that any level of meth in a house above 0.5μg meant it was unsafe and drug testing companies just enriched themselves off that initial stupidity, or whether it was the drug testing companies giving “professional” advice based on a misreading of the MoH guidelines that led HNZ to fuck their tenants big-time, is a matter of debate. However, it’s the drug testing companies’ job to understand the guidelines and those guidelines very clearly do not say what drug testing companies claimed they said. For my money, that’s a scam and I hope the shits who’ve been running it go bust.

        Whether methamphetamine contamination in a dwelling is via use or manufacture the exposure risk is the same.
        
        Like the best weaselry, it’s a true statement, carefully crafted to conceal two other truths:
        1. The exposure risk is the same, but the amount you could be exposed to won’t be.
        2. The health risk from meth exposure is the same in both cases: non-existent. The risk from a meth lab is in the toxic chemicals used in the production process, not from the finished product.

  Sorry, but this response is going to be long, but these type of misinformation pieces from people who suggest they are are from the medical profession & then spout garbage in our lazy media make my blood boil.
  
  Just a guess, but based on family experience, I’ll bet that good doctor who provided that research piece works for a pharmaceutical company. My family has extensive experience of vitamin & mineral deficiencies as my wife suffers from both iron & Vitamin D deficiciencied & she is very much a European fair skinned whitey. Because of her physiology, my wife can’t get enough Vitamin D from sunlight, tablets or supplements, she has to get it from infusion or patches she wears. In fact, it is almost impossible to overdose on Vitamin D from normal sources, to OD you would need to be getting large doses from infusions at non recommended time intervals.
  
  Much of what was written there was half truths. For another perspective on the subject people should read Ian Wishart’s book on the Vitamin D Conspiracy (published in 2011/12).
  
  Basically, most people in NZ have levels at just below normal, this situation was exacerbated by the skin cancer fraternity (supported by the pharmaceutical cosmetics industry) over kiwis & skin cancer. Vitamin D levels dropped significantly from the early 1980s.
  
  In the Stuff, piece the doctor is playing fast and loose with the science. Research has shown that a lack of vitamin D results in:
  Weakness of both bones & teeth;
  Physiological weaknesses in bones & muscles;
  Tiredness, fatigue & lack of energy;
  Depression;
  Mental impairment & judgment
  
  The reason for these types of articles can usually be traced to “big Pharma”, who do not want people getting inexpensive vitamin D supplements from the aisle of the supermarket or doctor, but want the doctors to be issuing prescriptions for expensive pharmaceuticals for pain relief and anti depressants.

      …and Maggie, my wife’s circumstances are such that we live with her Vitamin D deficiency as a normal part of life. It was also an ailment my mother in law suffered with most of her life.
      To overcome the problem my wife has to rely on patches we bring in from the US. She has seen a specialist in this country & he recommended the same treatment as the UK NHS (infusion at regular periods). Oral supplements are a waste.

Good day for religious freedom with the Supreme Court saying that a Christian Baker could refuse to bake a gay wedding cake that violated his religious beliefs. A victory for common sense and fairness and a blow against the imposition of compulsory gayness across the land.

  If the baker had baked a cake for these people he would not have suddenly become gay.
  Similarly I have been to many Buddhist services with my wife and partaken to a limited extent in the goings on, but I still emerge at the end of it all a non believer.

      In America Msnbc commentator Joy Reid has had to abase herself for past tweets that were seen as anti homosexual. In NZ Israel Folau has been abused everyday for standing up for the Bible’s view on homosexuality.
      
      These examples show that to speak up against homosexuality will lead to constant abuse, social ostracism, court action and the destruction of your business in some cases.
      
      That’s why we need to move against the gaystapo and realise once again that homosexuality is wrong and incompatible with a decent society. If homosexuals want to do their thing in private that’s one thing. But for everyone else to be forced to approve of their actions, that’s another thing entirely.

  As a former valuer for IRD of shares etc. –forget it. The scope for argument about value is enormous. The only beneficiaries will be lawyers and accountants.
  
  Taxes have to be equitable, certain, simple and collectable. It’s hard to argue with a QV. The value of shares in a private company has scope for great uncertainty. Is this to be an annual appraisal?
  
  Avoid CGT like the plague. The bright line test is reasonable in relation to real property as everyone argues they “did not intend to make a profit” and that needs to be countered. A tax rebated over the last 3 of the 5 years from purchase would fairly capture most situations. The longer the property being held the less to pay.

        I’ve heard it said that Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands are often in the same marketing region as New Zealand for vehicles, and motor microprocessors then are tailored to cope with lower, or more variable, fuel standards in PNG and the Islands.
        
        You used to be able to buy for some vehicles microprocessors that would squeeze a little more performance out of an engine by being designed for Australian-NZ fuel quality.

The “et tu, Brutē” trick is one of the oldest moves in the political playbook but few people are as willing to play it as former National Party leader and Prime Minister Jim Bolger.

Bolger was on Tuesday announced as the head of a team of 10 people from the unions, business and work groups charged with bringing Labour’s policy to set “fair pay” agreements to life.

It is a major shakeup of industrial relations and a policy National strongly opposes and has set as one of its key battlegrounds.

In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Caesar infamously says “et tu Brutē?” when he finds Brutus had betrayed him.

This is Bolger’s third strike in terms of cuckolding National.

His first was signing up as CEO of NZ Post and KiwiBank under the former Labour Government.

His second was signing up as chair of KiwiRail following Labour’s buy-back of it. It was Bolger who had privatised KiwiRail’s predecessor New Zealand Rail in the first place.

Yesterday he stood there again, shameless, on the stage of the Beehive theatrette alongside Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway.

He didn’t even flinch when Lees-Galloway used the word “collaborate” to describe Bolger’s involvement.

  I agree Viking2. Bolger has confirmed that he’s now a Labourite.
  It will be interesting to see what he’s got to offer this time. The reason why middle-class wages have been ‘hollowed-out’ is that WFF has removed the obligation that the employers had to keep salaries up to speed. The taxpayers are subsidising the employers.
  Any real long-term fix to this problem is going to include a removal of WFF and a reduction in company tax so the employers have an incentive to pay real wages.
  Let’s see if ‘the great helmsman’ is up to the job.

      Bolger wound up by a pipsqueak like Laws? That’s just a wishful fantasy on your part, and you know it. What is certain, however, is that on Feb. 22, 2012, Michael Laws was wound up by this writer, i.e., moi. The poor fellow got so incoherently angry that he nearly melted down into a pool of bile and stupidity….

Ultra-feminists are getting sniffy about male-associated names for women’s genitalia: including hymen (after a Greek male god), the G spot, Fallopian tubes (those two after male scientists), and vagina (because it’s from the Latin word for sword sheath – a male’s weapon of war).

Some of the concern comes from Swedish feminists who want to stir their English-language counterparts into action.
