    My Left-Leaning Mum can’t stand them- “They’ve been around for donkey’s years and they’ve never been funny”
    Even my Grandmother thinks they are “dreadful women”.

        It takes all kinds.
        
        There are three sounds that I really can’t stand – will turn the volume off while the TV takes it seconds to change channels. In order of priority:
        
        The Topp Twins, Te Karere, Infomercials
        
        I could say I don’t find them funny but then I haven’t watched them for any longer than forced to. Their ‘music’ is like someone scratching their nails down a blackboard.
        
        They have no visual or auditory appeal whatsoever to me and I, like Inandout, always assumed they’re everywhere simply because they’re ‘rainbow’. As I’m not, and am really not into ‘identities’ for the sake of it, that appeal is futile.

        They are amongst the very very very few so called comedians and entertainers in New Zealand that are worthy of the titles.

    The problem with these honours is that they are closed door/back room dealings for partisan purposes. There should only be one granted per year and two thirds of the public at least should be comfortable with it. As for these other honours, like nzer of the year, they sucks as well.

      A bit of googling shows that everyone can nominate people for the Queen’s Birthday and New Year awards.
      The decisions are made by the Cabinet Appointments & Honours Comm – chaired by the Prime Minister. [who are also permitted to make their own nominations]
      While the members of all other Govt Committees are listed, they are not for this Committee.
      [Perhaps my email to the Honours Comm might produce a result!]
      With us having an avowed Republican PM, I wonder she is attempting to denigrate these ROYAL Honours by manipulating the results this time with some outlandish awards.

      By the Clutha affair, the Leftist stirrer, Doggone7, is referring to the media lynching of the young, inexperienced MP for Clutha, Todd Barclay, over his handling of relations with staff he inherited from Bill English, the former electorate MP.
      
      Barclay was to say the least, inept, but he did not deserve to be virtually hounded out of the country for this scale of offence.
      
      There is a stark difference between what happened to Barclay and to those involved in the recording from an empty table of the conversation between John Key and John Banks in 2011, with copies of the tape handed to the media.
      
      A media professional forgot to leave a tape recorder running on a table? Mmmm.
      
      However, what of the staff Barclay so poorly managed, and whom he fell out with, leading to his nemesis? Did they end up supporting NZ First? One at least appears to have been seen at an NZ First meeting.

        The initial comments on here weren’t about the poor handling of staff by Barclay but the cover-up and dishonesty of the (now) new Knight.
        
        And now you want to get a hanging rope out to deal to some staff member from there who went to a NZ First meeting? If going to a political meeting of some drongo MP or party when you supported someone else were a hanging offence my quiet attendance at many meetings would have seen me well gone by now.

  It beggars belief that this government would award an Honour for someone who represents a profession which is anything but honourable.
  
  I admire Catherine Healy for the work she has done with those on the outers of society, but I simply cannot accept that this government considers her work worthy of the same honour and title awarded to the likes of Sir Edmund Hillary

    Healy has worked for the betterment of Kiwi women for a long time in an industry which is never going away and once was the preserve of those gangs you so vehemently abhor. Her work, along with others, has deprived the gangs of much of that income whist helping to educate and protect women from some vile men.
    
    Pity we don’t do the same with drugs.

      And what do you think of Hillary’s philanthropic work for the Sherpa People of Nepal? His work for the government as High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh?
      
      I’m happy to give credit where it is due, but for work in a field that I would not want my offspring to work, a Damehood is not appropriate in my opinion.
      
      If that makes me a bit of a prude, then so be it. I have a great deal of respect for Healy and her work in helping vulnerable women, and keeping them safe in a industry that is normally an option of last resort, but I am concerned about the signal that might be sent by this gesture.

    Slightly, I quite agree -especially with your last sentence. A QSM/QSO would have sufficed, surely.
    Nominated someone for royal honour once. Sixty years service to community, sometimes involving threat to his own safety and that was only worth a QSO.
    What will Healy get if she sticks to the cause for sixty years? Sainthood?
    It isn’t the acknowledgement that sticks in my craw, it’s the politicisation that gets things all out of proportion.

I did not know that Kiwibank is starting to wage war on cheques until a $1 cheque clearance fee appeared on my account (I have to bank several cheques a year), and then found that new books of cheques and deposit slips will be 30c each (per page, bit book). Wonder if other banks are ramping up a war on cheques and paper deposit slips (fortunately you do not need deposit slips if you have an EFTPOS card).

  From 1 May they also will not automatically reissue your cheque book , you’ll have to order one for $25 !
  
  Also $2 for posting out paper statements and charges for counter services, even to deposit money!
  
  All this and they still have account fees.
  
  They’re not waging war on cheques , they’re waging war on their own customers.

These dominate the Kiwibank/Post Shop customer queues as they followed on from the POSB school banking system to the “new” bank.   Funny thing. Here, you can’t get on without a cheque book and bugger me if it’s one of the things I still notice about America. It’s a “check book”! And the missing “U” furrows my brow every time.
  Overnight transfer? No way Jose but you can’t get through a week without writing fifty or so in the old-fashioned way.
  There would be an uproar if you were charged for checks here.
  Surprising that the banks rort customers more in New Zealand given that America is always on the take.
  I blame the Aussie influence and the propensity to dip in the pocket of Little Bro.

  Kiwibank is a gigantic uneconomic screw up, a few years ago I switched my main in and out from kiwibank to ANZ because they gave me a pay wave no cost account. My Kiwibank account which I had for years and years (the account number shows I was an original because I lived right next to a post office at the time) drifted under $4k but I’d stopped using it, and it kept going down. The bastards changed the account from what I originally set up to one that takes out $10 a week if below $5k or something. This went on for over a year before I noticed and stopped it. It was $620 in fees, f’n pricks.

    Kiwibank has been pushing paywave debit cards (at no cost to customer I think). It is indeed no cost in many cases – supermarkets, petrol stations, etc., However as far as I know airlines, rental car companies, hotels, etc slam on a hefty fee for debit card transactions to cover bank merchant fees even though the merchant bank gets paid pretty well immediately.

      But Paywave only takes a Debit from your Credit Card Account which I never use.
      Was in an expensive restaurant the other day and before I could say no the owner Paywaved. I protested that I want to pay with my EFTPOS account which I use all the time. He said effectively tough and tried to con me for a tip.
      Bye !
      I told him that with a credit card account he will not get paid for up to six weeks and a charge around four percent is deducted. He did not care.
      This expensive restaurant (Mt Maung) was packed.

        stephieboy, based on my experience of continuous payments of rent arrears issued, not a couple of $ hundreds, usually thousands. Of finding suitable emergency housing for people to stay to say, nahhhh. I won’t a motel. From finding a social housing home to hear nahhhh, too far from my family. To last resorts of placing them into motels, and having them evicted for parties, damage, threatening behaviour and intimidation.

Surely all these well intentioned schemes just inflate the price of housing? Like National’s laughable first home buyer subsidy, effectively adding $50,000 or more to the price of all entry level housing. If you give someone an extra 5% towards their deposit then they can borrow an extra $50,000 at a 10% deposit rate. So they can bid $50,000 more for a house.

All these bright, well intentioned bods are all from the same intelligentsia caste that created the house price problem in the first place, not to mention the leaky home fiasco. When will they actually identify the real causes of the house price bubble and stop believing in comfortable platitudes?

OK – I am not as young a feral as I once was. Was chopping/splitting a trailer of wood the old fashioned way with an axe and seem to have pulled a muscle or two. My back and ab obliques are in utter agony. Barely slept last night as every time I moved the muscles spasmed. How the fuck do you rest abd muscles to give them a chance to settle down?

      Best to rent the engine-powered logsplitter. Fairly cheap to rent and depending on the logs you can get it done in a day.
      
      Ps, when doing it the manual way is probably best to use a maul to split wood the old fashioned way, not an axe. (I think Mitre10 just calls them a log splitter). I think the head is heavier and makes it easier.
      
      I have to admit, I’d probably be very much in pain if I tried to split wood these days…lol

      @WF try the relaxation method which already on hand. Lay down an a firm but comfortable surface. Relax you entire body and place hands at waist level. Let the muscles all relax from head to toe, chin down and mouth comfortably open. Then “find” the painful muscle group by simply flexing each until you find the one that hurts the most. Easiest done after relaxing as each group can be found one at a time and you will be surprised that they are easy to find.
      Then the process is simple to tense just that muscle until the pain is felt and hold 5 seconds. Release and rest 5 seconds then repeat the process noting that with each tension it is going a little further.
      Be patient and continue for as long as gains are made or move on to another pained area. Between each set drink lots of water which is the only additive needed.
      After the completing the first series it will be easier to find a comfortable position for your body to rest. Next session lift to 10 sec hold and release with the understanding that it keeps getting better with every squeeze.
      In fact the muscle has become a pump for the dead matter that causes the inflammation and is being pumped away by the controlled flexing plus the hydration of the water. While the average pain killer like paracetamol will help it is short term and can mask the pain. The simple process suggested will ensure your body recovers more completely. The key is getting the body to relax completely then target the pained areas one set at a time. So time to lie down.

  @Wangras Feral sorry to hear you are so out of shape but if such discomfort is the result of a bit of wood splitting it is your technique that is the problem more that you body. However there is a very effective method of relaxation that is taught by most hospital physiotherapists and possibly private practitioners. Very effective for what ails you as well as helping those with problems getting to sleep. Better than any medication as the mind helps to mend the body in the simplest of ways.

Was getting veges from a roadside seller and they were packed in a plastic bag. I naturally asked when they would stop using the bags and she said they won’t because the bags they are now using decompose within 2 years. They cost an extra cent each. I wondered why the supermarkets don’t use these bags that break down, or is the slightly dearer cost the reason? I seem to remember New World tried this years ago and the bags would break up into small pieces if left for a time. I don’t trust supermarkets acting in the customer’s favour.

      It’s not exactly rocket science, which is why it worries me that so many right-wingers seem to have a hard time grasping it. Consent in the sexual context is about whether the other participant(s) want to do that stuff or not.
      
      Which means, when it comes to adults, it’s nobody else’s business what sexual activity two people get up to as long as they’re both willing participants. Which in turn means it’s fairly obvious that homosexuality or whatever other “perverted” sex people want to engage in and come up with a letter for are all fine, as long as it involves consenting adults.
      
      However, consent represents a huge hurdle for anyone trying add “P for pedophilia” to that list, because society knows damn well it can’t trust adults to fairly negotiate sexual consent with children. For that reason, the only explanation for people trying to claim pedophilia will be treated the same as homosexuality is that those people have no idea what consent is.         I have to confess, you seem to be implying that the only way to find out if a child consents to sexual activity with a child is for the adult to test boundaries and determine if the child ‘likes it’.
        
        I find that extremely worrisome and anxiety inducing.
        
        Grooming is real. It is easy to make a young person feel like they ‘like’ something or identify with something that is really bad for them.
        
        The status quo is surely preferable, where the ‘probing’ of particular children’s consent is simply curtailed and prohibited by strict age thresholds. It would simply be nightmarish for my children to be having their sexual psychologies probed and massaged in order to develop and determine their sexual receptivity. That should be an organic coming of age experience. Not catalysed by adults seeking their own gratification.
        
        The revolutionary mindset always seeks to ‘benchmark’ normative standards against it’s own outlier values. I just question whether or not homosexual sexual relations which are so vastly different in aspect to heterosexual should be adopted as the benchmark for normative standards. You know.
        
        I respect that you may have had much more animated sexual predilections at a younger age then most children. But the affects of bench-marking society to your needs are catastrophic.

      Isn’t the only way to determine a child’s consent to having sex with an adult to effectively engage in gradations of testing? So you just probe the sexual receptivity until the kid makes it apparent?
      
      To me that seems like the only possible way you could determine consent from a child given the vagaries and subtleties of sexual relations.
      
      How does that not constitute grooming?
      
      In many of these cases in Sweden/Norway/Finland/Germany I’ve been reading very young girls are effectively being imputed with consent simply because they ‘asked’ for the sex with much older Muslim men after a period of congenial relations over time.
      
      How is it not grooming?
      
      I simply want to be able to think that my sons and my daughter won’t have their sexual natures elicited as opposed to naturally developed.

      There is no question the children are consenting. Many of these teachers are attractive. But just because they’re attractive surely it’s wrong for them to respond to solicitations from children?

        I’d advise them not to, ever, under any circumstances. There’s an excellent reason we have a minimum age of consent: adults can’t be trusted to negotiate sexual consent with children. It’s true that some men find children sexually attractive and at least some children would be interested in participating, but allowing those men to act on that sexual attraction would expose all children to high risk of sexual predation, so we don’t and won’t allow it.
        
        Re your comments on grooming, yes that’s exactly why we have an age of consent and won’t be scrapping it. We seem to have a hell of a lot of men who think that manipulating someone into sexual activity they’ll later profoundly regret is “consensual sex,” and they cause enough misery among adults, without being let loose on children as well.

Today I walked along Coronation Rd in downtown Mangere Bridge and noticed that someone had attacked the notice board displaying the timetables at the bustop. A year or two ago someone had smashed the sides of the bustop up the road.
Why do people want to do shit like that?
Where is people’s sense of civic responsibility?

Around the corner is a motorway on ramp with two lanes controlled by lights during peak hours plus an uncontrolled T2 lane.
Most people follow the rules, but quite a few single occupancy cars don’t wait and use the wrong lane.
Where is their sense of civic responsibility?

The latter example is fairly minor in the big scheme of things and the chances of getting caught are infinitesimal, but to me it’s disappointing to see people not taking pride in their society either way.
