    Thanks WG. Not only did I want to start the day and GD with something that made me smile, I wanted to share with a bunch of people who Ive come to love over the last few years.
    
    After the mother of my children died, Id made the decision to stay single – Id seen too many friends stray into the meat market and get chewed up. I didnt want that for me, and I didnt want my kids confused by what was happening. I had my kids, my friends, my work, my toys and places I loved. What more could I possibly need?
    
    Turns out sometimes the universe decides you did need something else, and sends you a gentle, caring, loving, smart and gorgeous reason to make the smile even bigger.
    
    Before she died, knowing she was going to, my wife said to me that she knew she hadnt been the best wife, and that she hoped I would find someone who would be.
    
    The Blond accompanied me to her resting place last week. I cannot be more blessed.

    I did ask if she planned on making an honest man of me…and she got down on bended knee. Which being a 6 footer was quite the sight. At which point we both giggled like the sick making touchy feely couple we are. 12 months weve been together, and we still both melt in each others arms.

        Not at all calendar girl. My wife does weddings because she loves them, and doesn’t charge a fee.
        
        Many of the couples she marries give her a small thank you gift, but her primary concern is that cost is not a barrier for the couple getting wed.

        My daughter, 13, was bereft after her Mum died. I spent a lot of time with her, we went to counselling, we worked through a lot of stuff together. Our relationship now is what the yoof call ‘tight’.
        
        And she adores the blond, and the blond has been so incredible with her. And my beautiful girl gets a strong, smart, girly role model – who also happens to be an awesome mountain bike rider.
        
        Best I dash, shes coming round for dinner, we leave for a holiday in a couple of weeks, planning to do over a nice bottle of Bollinger. Have a great week everyone!! 😀

  Reason being that Ms Ardern is seen as special, famous and a global phenomenon for caring and sharing.
  Ordinary women can’t hope to compete with that, but many admire Ms Ardern for her success and are willing to accept and justify privilege that goes with that success.
  Speaking of which, family members here yesterday asked each other what Ms Ardern did during her terms in opposition.
  After a bit of head scratching, one said she lost the Auckland Central election twice. Another said she was on one of those “young gun” morning TV promotional panels.
  But an international socialist leader and all around wonder woman?

How is it that a woman who is supposedly ‘anti’ capitalism and belongs to a party that very vocally and repeatedly indicates that it abhores ‘Rich pricks’, proceeds to exhibit all the characteristics usually associated with those two ‘ideologies’?         It was a surprise that Ms Ardern chose to have her baby in a public hospital. Yes, her socialist conscience would have struggled with the political imagery of her ‘going private’. But everyone knows that she is now a person of significant means, and could well afford to meet the highest private fees charged in Auckland. (Any private hospital would probably waive the fees anyway, in exchange for modest publicity.)
        
        If it is true that her presence (plus entourage) at Auckland City Hospital required the requisition of multiple secure rooms over a number of days for a single birth, why should taxpayers be expected pay for that scale of accommodation? And why should other expectant women be required to adapt to alternative birthing arrangements?

They have had nine months to plan this, if she can’t be safe in her own house with 30 odd bodyguards where will she be safe. Twelve hours in Labour and Three days in hospital is a C Section for all money. I have no issue with this, what irks me is the ballshit about the truth. If the Spin Doctors thought that they could not drag out more sympathy from this situation, and more $$ for Clarke from the womens rags, they are not worth having. On Mike Hosking’s breakfast show Tuesday he interviewed PM Winston Peters.

Among topics discussed were falling business confidence, the $, gloomy forecasts etc.

In spite of proclaiming that if the economy stalls don’t blame him, Peters rebutted the stock market is in the best shape ever and the books are very good so stop worrying.

My question Winston – if this is so – is

Why would you touch anything – anything at all – on what you are saying is a tight ship steaming forward in a robust manner? Why would you be in a Coalition whose sole aim is to change literally everything?

Look, please can we all stop repeating the idea that Jacinda’s only PM because Winston ‘selected’ her?

Winston’s demands on National during negotiations were clearly absurd, unworkable, dangerous. They told him to sling his hook, knowing the result would be chaos. Which it is.

Winston ‘selected’ Jacinda like I ‘selected’ the sausage roll in the pie warmer this morning.

It was the only item in there.

So NZ First win again and all Sir Patrick Hogan gets is slapped with a wet bus ticket for his illegal full page advise to Racing owners to support Winston Fìrst. Now we have a 40 million dollar cost for tax breaks to the Racing Industry for buyers that want to breed instead of the 4 million dollars that Winston wants the NZ voter to believe. When you have Leaders continually being involved in dodgy dealings which includes the Owen Glenn donation and the Vela Helecopters saga and now this and he still is allowed to rule the roost how can we say NZ Politics is not corrupt and be confident that it is not.

With the constant MSM stories about people being ‘locked out’ of the housing market and hearing from a family member that they can’t afford to buy a house after having the opportunity to save for 25 years – I was delighted to find out during the week that one of my guys at work was buying his first house.
He purchased a modest 4 bedroom in a suburb a stones throw from the train station that gets you to the Wgtn CBD in under 30 mins for low $400k’s. He and his wife have been in KiwiSaver from the start so had $80k to use from that. In addition they get $5k each from the government for their first house so another $10k there. They got a good broker that got them a few grand from the bank with the mortgage and a great interest rate.
This made me feel really good for my mate and his family.
It also made me feel even more annoyed with MSM stories and with my family member that is ‘locked out’ of the housing market. This slightly younger family member has had at least 20 years to save and will only look in areas that they like (unaffordable). They Happen to be lefty voters that support greater refugee intake etc. however they wouldn’t even consider looking at an open home in Taita, Naenae, Kelso, Upper Hutt, Wainuiomata because it’s not good enough for them.
My mate just proved that nobody should get ‘locked out’ of the housing market even on a modest income if you are prepared to work hard and make sacrifices (plus you get government help!) and look in areas that your budget can afford. If you can’t do that then I don’t want to hear your whining.

  It’s called getting on the property ladder. You buy what you can afford anywhere and slowly build up your equity. With the slow but steady rise in property prices, the increase in inflation, then you cannot help but win.

    Unfortunately some people have the budgeting mentality to whinge about the cost of something being $30 and then walk into the pokies room and blow $50 (or more)

  I still think first home buyers have the wrong attitude even with Kiwisaver and Govt gifts. Did they ever think about getting a second and third job, going hard out for 4 years, saving everything possible? Nope, have to have social time at the pub and parties. I did all this and now do not own a property (a Trust owns it freehold) I also have 3 vehicles, 2 boats and a caravan.

  I actually agree with Andy on this one. ‘Indecent assault’ is a ‘broad spectrum’ crime with 7 years jail maximum and covers everything from bottom pinching to serious acts just short of rape. Surely Parliament never intended someone would actually be sentenced to 7 years jail for pinching a bottom. Andy was merely pointing this out rather than trivialising the crime as such and Julie rightly concurred. Manslaughter is the other ‘strike’ crime that is ‘broad spectrum’. Perhaps these crimes should each be split in two for less serious and more serious situations with the less serious versions having lesser maximum penalties and not listed as ‘strike’ crimes.

        I was thinking of the R v Campbell case where, while the female corrections officer reported the incident, she indicated in her victim statement that she did not want the prisoner to be sentenced to 7 years without parole for it (third strike), and the judge invoked ‘manifestly unjust’ to allow the possibility of parole.
        There was also the R v Harrison case where the offender faced Life without parole as a second strike for murder following a first strike for pinching a policewoman’s bottom and the judge invoked ‘manifestly unjust’ to impose a finite sentence instead.
        I am not sure whether commenters are perhaps thinking of some other case.
        On the basis that Andy was questioning whether the full force of the ‘three strikes’ law should apply to ‘low end’ indecent assault, I consider that he has a valid point here. I consider at some appropriate time the the law be amended to the ‘three strikes’ does not apply to low end indecent assault and manslaughter rather than relying on the ‘manifestly unjust’ provision.
        I appreciate that he is using this as leverage to condemn the ‘three strikes’ law and have no issue with him being criticised for that aspect.
        It is conceivable that the courts’ use of the ‘manifestly unjust’ provision may have saved the day for the ‘three strikes’ law as Winston could have well have supported its repeal if the consequences of it were perceived to be excessively harsh.

I heard on the radio today that the govt reckons there is too much competition between schools and that their shouldn’t be “winners and losers” because it’s not good for children.

The head of the taskforce overseeing the review, Bali Haque, said many schools did well out of the reforms, but some did not.

“The system is succeeding for many, but it’s failing for too many and that needs to be dealt to, we cannot afford to allow so many of our students to fall out of the system,” he said.

“We have winners and losers and if we’re talking about education and we’re talking about children and we’re talking about young people’s lives, then I think having a system that sort of generates winners and losers is no longer acceptable, not sustainable. It’s not good for us as a country and its spells problems for us down the track.”

    It’s easy teaching in a well-resourced school with polite middle / upper-class kids if you have competent colleagues.

  But F it is yet another illustration of how these people involved in a review are so far disconnected with the children. The competitive spirit has always been very strong in children but sadly education administrators and officials still fail to see or understand it.
  In fact it is that strong young competitive spirit that is the major driving force for the gaming industry which is huge. Sadly the state education system has strayed too far from the fundamentals with their curriculum which is the biggest cause of failures exceeding successes. Thereby creating the first level of haves and have not’s. The winners only get that way with substantial parental support, encouragement and involvement. The looser start down the have not path because of the absence of that support thus something like a Bali Haque comes along with an alternative. Make them all losers. It is attitudes like this that spell problems for us down the track.

      In case you have not heard, the way a government is formed is so that it combines the parties that together command the support of 50% of the votes cast in the election.
      While you might well be correct that some voters did not expect their chosen parties to form coalitions, it still provides a wider base of support than a first-past-the-post system.
      It has always struck me as strange that those who bewail the deficiencies of MMP never seem to acknowledge the deficiencies of FPP (remember the governments elected despite receiving fewer votes overall?) or, indeed, that there can be no such thing as a perfect electoral system.

      Heard of one medium sized Auckland Law firm Partners having a disagreement with their HR on how many interns should they take this summer and what sex they should be.
      They usually take up to six but are reluctant to take any this year as they are afraid of being targeted by applications.
      Will advise when a decision has been made but the Partners are under extreme pressure not exercise their wish. They do have two women Partners too.

Currently swanning around on an Alaskan Cruise and last night we stopped in Victoria, British Columbia.
Everything was going fantastic till we stopped at a pedestrian crossing and I happened to glance at the lamp post on my right.
Stuck on it was a poster with the ugly mug of Helen Clark saying that she will be in town tonight to promote the new documentary “My Year With Helen” which was premiering in town that evening.

Last week, when the missus got home from Mass, she swore she’d never take the bloody kids again! She reckons Mister10 & Miss8 were just sooo naughty, with their constant bickering and fighting. Anyway, she relented this morning, got them up early and took them along with her….one more chance!

She’s just got back, and said they couldn’t have better, sat there quiet as mice. The wife reckons when Mister10 opened the message I sent to his iPad and showed his sister, they both nearly shit themselves.

This seems about the worst possible month to be suggesting that anybody should try to emulate anything going on in America. The place seems to be going mad in ways no longer funny to laugh at from very far away.

So it’s a bit of a shame that the best lessons on infrastructure financing and affordable housing come from a few places in the United States that have really figured things out. If the exact same lessons had come from Canada, or the UK, or Estonia, Infrastructure New Zealand would have an easier time marketing its latest report.

If New Zealand is going to crack the problems of unaffordable housing, government here is going to have to look seriously at how the better parts of America finance infrastructure. Within the same country, you can find major urban areas like San Francisco that are as unaffordable as Auckland, others like Atlanta, or Houston, where housing remains very affordable – and plenty in-between.

In April, an Infrastructure New Zealand delegation visited Portland, Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Francisco. Their report, “Enabling City Growth: Lessons from the USA”, was released last week. … read more via hyperlink above …

A friend of mine is about to have her second child. Not especially newsworthy, unlike some recent births…..or is it?

You see, my friend has had to battle cancer, TWICE! Chemo, radiation, double mastectomy, multiple surgeries, hospital stays, and holding down a full time job. She always wanted more than just one child, and now this miracle. She and her husband are two of the best people, and deserve every blessing. They even bought a house in Auckland last year.

A much better story than some the media are peddling at the moment.

Some things never change and human behaviour is one of them. I suppose one that has, and is ‘progressively’ sliding backwards, is levels of maturity in the ‘adult’ generation.

HdPA is bemoaning NZ not following overseas trends fast enough. Clearly, she learned to use the argument “But I want to do it!. Everyone else is doing it!” with her parents when growing up and they listened. Responsible parents responded, “If everyone else was jumping of a cliff, would you do it?” The idea, of course, is to use your intelligence and rational mind to make good decisions in your own/society’s best interests.

By no stretch of the imagination would I call NZ ‘conservative’ – not even approaching it. But then, I wouldn’t call it ‘rational’ either – more caught by the ridiculous and fraudulent ‘globalist liberal’, ‘individual rights’, and PC ‘identity’ movements causing havoc all over the world; and here. All that has achieved is the highest rates of child abuse and youth suicide in the developed world. I wouldn’t mind betting we’re up there with STI rates and rates of drug/alcohol problems would be interesting as well.

She does end her immature rant with, “Kiwis have always been brave enough to call out BS, then fall on the right side of history. It’d be a pity if those days are over.”

Hopefully, they’re not. Perhaps that’s why she senses a movement away from what’s causing the problems – anarchic, alienating, and self-destructive individualism; the destruction of true democracy of the people, by the people, and for the people in favour of total power to ‘representative’ individuals/minorities who tell the supposedly ‘tyrannous’ majority how they should and will live. A society in which people are heavily invested in ways to blank their minds to get away from the reality.

Speaking of all which, we’ve had many governments in my lifetime, some of which I’ve love, some hated, and some really didn’t care much. This is the first time we’ve had one which might be technically legal but I don’t recognise. It wasn’t ‘elected’, or even preferred. It was the choice of Winston Peters. As was Ardern. And the best you can say about any vote for her or Labour is that it was mostly down to a lot of irrational, emotive, PR spun, lies and manipulation with remarkable similarity to the workings of the ‘Pied Piper’, aided and abetted by the MSM.

Similarly, Ardern’s ‘motherhood’ is more political PR spin. I can’t express how much I despise her ‘modelling’ of what is appropriate for women/mothers. Giving birth is a major physical event, a major rite of passage, and a major life change which deserves due attention and participation by all members of the family involved.

Ardern may want to receive her ‘box’ of government papers. The vast majority of women can’t and/or don’t want to work while giving birth and for some time after, and definitely should not be expected to. In fact, I can’t imagine that responsible appropriate professionals would be recommending such a course of action for the general populace as being in the best interests of mother, baby, or family.

I think all babies are miracles and I hope this one is healthy and happy. But there’s no way I support Ardern and/or her ‘frog prince’ in how they’re processing it all publicly and for political purposes. It’s nauseating and I suspect something they will come to regret in the future.

In the meantime, I hope all women stand up for themselves and their right to have this time for themselves, babies, families without having to work and/or rush back to work, and to enjoy the rights and take responsibility for raising their children rather than abandoning them to intermediaries or child care centres. Perhaps more like the Duchess of Cambridge who clearly has a better appreciation of what the role encompasses and values her children as her first priority.

  I feel sorry for the kid. Her identity will be characterised by strife between her actual lineage, and the one her parents have adorned her with. She will spend her whole life aspiring to be ‘more Maori’ and will over compensate in all manner of identity dimensions as a result. She will always have an idealized view of the concept ‘Maori’ and will never value or treasure her actual genetic identity. All so her parents can virtue signal. It’s like having gay parents. The kid from conception is simply an appendage of their gay identity, and the child can never leave it, for to break with that identity when the personal is so highly and unrelentingly political would be to repudiate the parental relationship. So again the constant conflict and dissonance between reality and politically correct non reality.

In addition to spiralling city debt, Christchurch is in a knot about how to improve its water quality. The cost of bringing it up to standard seems to have jumped 40-fold from original estimates.

This while the city’s debt levels spiral, and the question arises again of selling at least minority stakes in some of the council’s assets.

At the controls on water is the city’s designated “chief strategist,” Helen Beaumont, a B.Sc from Massey who worked as a scientist with the old DSIR, with a focus on water chemistry and “environmental impact assessment.”

No-one’s happy with the water: health people with its quality and citizens long spoilt by having unchlorinated water, with the chlorine levels.

The Christchurch Press yesterday said the council is planning to earmark $25 million or so on improving the water, and is looking at a mixture of ultra violet and ozone treatment which could cost as much as $90 million. The Christchurch Star says costs have already jumped from $800,000 to improve the wellheads, to $35m to fix 49 pump stations around the city.

Is the council is thinking, ‘Well, if we’re spending the best part of $100 million on a replacement central library, what’s another $100 million on water?”

Perhaps it’s time to put some intelligent local engineers on cost leashes and set them to work.

The city’s over-all deteriorating financial strength reflects the decline in the character of NZ citizens. If the earthquakes had occurred a century ago, perhaps even just half a century ago, Christchurch citizens would have talked of planting its new wastelands in radiata pine, with an eye on the harvest. Now it’s talk of native trees, cycle ways, artificial lakes and sports facilities.

This whole overreaction to water and possible contamination etc has all been exaggerated by the hysterical response to the Havelock Nth water episode.
There is NOTHING wrong with water from many of the major water takes in NZ.
I listened to an interview with the former Hastings Mayor (now MP) who admitted that the HDC underestimated the possiblity of contamination from poor headworks.
The staff at HDC refused to react to warnings given by the HB Regional Council staff that they needed to maintain certain well heads.They did not like being told what to do and look what happened.
The millions being spent in Hastings now was totally unnecessary as the water is still pristine but the reaction has been one of panic.
This panic has spread throughout the country and ratepayers are copping it bigtime ( or bigly)

Have we had anything in Kiwiblog about a Maori activist complaining to the United Nations about NZ 250th anniversary celebrations of Captain Cook’s explorations? The celebrations are being run by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

The Christchurch Press says Tina Ngata, whom it says teaches indigenous rights at “university level” (that suggests a wananga), made the complaint on the ground that New Zealand’s “ discovery narrative”, through the Tuia Encounters 250 events”underpinned the denial of indigenous rights”.

She said New Zealand had failed to condemn the actions of Cook, which Ngata says include “theft, abduction, genocide and imperial expansion.”

Ngata raised money to attend the UN’s 17th Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues, in New York, through a Givealittle fundraiser, which raised $1618 of its $2700 goal.

Fears of offending Maori seem to have skewed the anniversary celebrations. Former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley says the celebration will focus on “our shared society.”

It looks as though celebrations of the James Cook, one of the greatest navigators and explorers the world has known, will be diluted so they don’t offend Maori activists and their weasley pakeha friends.

Ngata, from Ruatoria, is also known for her campaign against plastic pollution.

Although he is probably the greatest mariner and explorer, even you should be able to understand that the significance to our country of 1769 is the first contact between European and Maori (Tasmania doesn’t really count).

  Someone knowledgeable about military aviation might explain why NZ couldn’t complement its long-range maritime patrol planes with something cheaper for patrolling closer to our shoreline.
  
  Perhaps that or some sort of screen of drones.
  
  If smaller aircraft were feasible for NZ, would something on the scale of the NATO push-turbo-prop Piaggio P180 multipatrol aircraft version be economic and a suitable complement for the bigger planes?

I was reading WO and someone had hopped of a cruise liner in Brish Columbia from memory and there was a flyer stuck on a lampost was Helen Clarks ugly mush adverising her movie One Year With Helen ( which is already in the bargin bin at the Warehouse).
My questain is.
Who pays for all her tripping around the place. She’s promoting her business. I presume she’s paying tax in it.
So she should be on her own dime. Not the taxpayer.

Picked up my dear wife from a baby shower this afternoon. I just had to ask if the love child was mentioned…

I had expected adoration and love expressed by the group that were a “mixed bag”.

So wrong…. To a person all had just had a guts fill of the media hype. Several had suggested that it’s not Arderns fault but that was quietly shouted down as most believe she is milking it to gain some sort of political advantage. There was disgust that she would stage manage the happy event.

Although there were no obvious Green supporters there many expressed admiration for the way JAG was conducting herself in contrast to Ardern.

Surprise surprise….

    “Stage managed” may not be the correct term. There are probably other words to describe an event where someone arranges & controls everything carefully in order to achieve the result they want.
    
    “Production” comes to mind. So do “choreography” & “political squirrel creation”.

        She uses “precise words and phrases” which are designed to mean anything she says they mean later down the track RF. Everything is carefully phrased PR speak & gobbledegook. Eg “Well I think… I believe…. It’s my opinion that”.
        
        When you analyse any of her press statements or answers to questions they are as free from useful information as a frog from feathers.

This was an attempt by me to jog folk here into checking what they wrote before posting …
Nothing to do with their education but rather their fingers not hitting the correct keys in the right order.
Something that I suffer from with age but do my best to correct before posting.

“Relations ‘still broken’ despite decades of appeasement
Crown-Maori relations are in need of repair, according to Kelvin Davis, who is the Minister of the new Crown-Maori Relations portfolio.

This is despite decades of appeasement, more than $3-billion being paid in Treaty settlements, and numerous other special deals.

Davis appears to take the 1800 people who attended 16 hui on the issue as justification for a new body to facilitate a partnership between “the Crown and Maori” to administer “7000 post-Treaty settlement commitments made by the Crown that nobody has been monitoring”.

Davis ignored a letter and subsequent full-page adverts placed by Hobson’s Pledge that objected to a Crown-Maori portfolio.

We argued that such a portfolio entrenches the notion that the Crown and Maori somehow exist as separate groups in partnership with each other when it is constitutionally impossible for the Crown to partner with a sector of its citizens.

Our letter also objected to the matter being discussed at marae meetings because such venues are private property and off limits to all New Zealanders who may be concerned with the issue.

A Stuff report revealed that a note had been sent out ahead of every meeting saying media weren’t able to attend the bulk of the hui. Therefore, matters discussed remained secret.

Most surprising is the confirmation that there are 7000 post-Treaty settlement commitments made by the Crown, as well as the assertion by Davis that if these were acknowledged, Maori will start to feel like “fully-contributing members of society”.

If Davis succeeds in persuading Cabinet to set up a new government bureau to administer the 7000 post-Treaty settlement commitments made by the Crown, we can be sure that the notion that the Crown and Maori somehow exist as separate groups in partnership with each other will be fully entrenched in government processes, as we argued against.

A constitutional impossibility will be turned into a reality.”

  Most farmers own shotguns Nostra. My guess would be that the councils would be replacing their drone fleet on a monthly basis. The ack-ack displays in the skies over the Waikato would resemble those of Dresden in 1944.
  
  I did actually look at buying a drone for stock management but shelved the idea when we decided to sell the property. The idea of checking that everything on the hill paddocks was okay from the comfort of my lounge appealed. 🙂

The Government housing push in Auckland is going to be big – 23,600 houses over 10 years, 46.6 per cent of them State homes. All on present State land.

All they need now is 30,000 Asian carpenters, who will get residence and bring in their families and mean net Auckland housing available will fall 6000.

Funny Jack5 they seem so much like the US TV standard of NSCT that was never the same colour twice as we not this statement: “We have consistently said that modelling has suggested that the changes we intend to make are estimated to reduce net migration by 20,000-30,000 a year, but we have never said that was a target.” Not a target now? Not what they were barking about before the elections. They are increasingly becoming more dependent on elevated migrant numbers stopping the economy from floundering. Almost as funny as sweet cheeks saying the reason for slumping business confidence is a matter of “perception” even the worst yet to come as they wind back labour relations.

Apparently violent crime involving gang members is decreasing nationally.(Down 10%)

As part of its brief, the Gang Intelligence Centre has spent four years gathering this new information.
Another part of the Centre’s brief is crime prevention, but so far it has offered no reason for why gang-related violent crime has dropped so significantly.
So what is the significance of this being released now? Is it to condition people into a false sence of safety for the pending catch and release plan? Or is it another example of the benefits of having the 3 strikes law doing it’s job detering serious recidavist offenders?
Must be a tough trough on the Gang Intelegence Centre if after 4 years of gathering information they showed minimal intellegence by ignoring the success of 3S.
